Winter Anime Catalogue 2012

Welcome to METANORN’s Winter Anime Catalogue of 2012!

Time to snowball into the new season~

Another year almost ending and another Winter line up. There are times that I think, where the hell time flies when you are having fun?! Season wise, I never get snowfall so I haven’t really enjoyed this weather but still it’s my favourite and a few weeks of reprieve after living in perpetual summer is all my tired body needs! From previous seasons, it’s evident that Winter’s not really great for a barrage of ‘good shows’ but there are always some titles that stand out like Nisemonogatari, Natsume Yuujinchou and Another. For me, this is the season to reduce my plan-to-watch list with some much needed marathoning. This is our early Christmas present to our readers or you can say ‘In-Time’. Hope you enjoy your holidays with some animu love~ :3
Winter: the season where sluts still find ways to reveal as much skin as possible. In Canada, the rest of the ladies here have it down to a fine art. BUT, we are not here to discuss the weather, we are here to read a super long list about anime! Take your time and don’t read it all at once, alright? It’s a hefty amount of words and you wouldn’t want to miss anything. After all, there are only a few series that look really good, so keep an eye open.
Be wary future visitors to Southern California: it’s not warm! Well, at least where I’m located at, where it’s been a constant 50-60 degrees every day. At least I have a good excuse to grab some yummy peppermint mocha, hurrhurr. Anyway, my sweeeeeeeeeet five week vacation is starting (praise college vacation times!) and I can’t wait to get back into the anime groove with some new, hopeful Winter titles. Yet, I’m still getting that sinking feeling that I’ll be as unimpressed with this year’s Winter season as I was with last year’s. If I am, well, at least I have my Bakuman S2…!
Whoa! Where the hell did my fall season go!? It sure ended fast! Guess it’s time to break out the hot chocolate and warm blankets and curl up to some brand new anime. This list looks a bit smaller to me usually we have so many shows to look through, but I have found a few hidden “gems” in this winter season. I noticed we finally got some more giant robot anime with this season like Aquarion EVOL and Rinne no Lagrange. And of course the series I am already drooling over Mouretsu Pirates, I can not wait to see what that show offers for me and it premiers on my birthday? Wonderful news! I hope you enjoy our amazing winter previews.
I have good memories of the winter season; listening to late night radio, roasting marshmallows over scented candles, watching my cat try to figure out what snow is…Yeah, good times. IF ONLY I COULD SAY THE SAME ABOUT THE ANIME SEASON. With the exception of maybe last year when we had little beauties like Wandering Son and Supernatural, winter is pants for anime. It just is. The shows all sound the same. My guess is that the writers are all too busy having fun in the sun during Spring and Summer when they are supposed to be writing the winter season that by the time they drag their drunken carcasses into the studio all they know how to right about is the beer-goggled instances of when they struck out with girls, or were so high on drugs they suddenly thought “Hey, this doesn’t need logic! It’s pretty!”…Prove me wrong, winter season! Prove me wrong!
Winter, I hate you because it’s just so damn cold and all I want to do is hibernate like a bear. BUT! I do like the holidays that you bring… somewhat. I’m so poor though, WHY!?! And I end up working lots! Plus, too much good food and you know what that means? DIET after the holidays! Man, I already wish it was summer… So yeah! Anime. Looking forward to a few this winter. Mainly I want to see the New Prince of Tennis and the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs. So exciting~! Unfortunately, I doubt that I’ll be covering any shows solo this season (not surprising huh?) but I’ll probably revive the Nesshizzel Tag Team with aniki. Other than that, I’ll be working on behind the scenes stuff as usual and my digest posts. So look forward to that~
It’s winter, meaning daily use of the crew socks, turning the thermostat up and watching some god awful anime. Everything this season either looks like garbage or is overrated and will highly likely fail to meet expectations. I’m kidding… I’m not that negative a guy. Nisemonogatari should be a-ok, Another is a really interesting property for P.A. Works to adapt, and Aquarion Evol kind of came out of nowhere as a surprise sequel; I guess those OVA’s did good a few years ago. So get some cocoa (preferably in one of those mugs that has a battery-operated spinny wheel in it), flip thru the preview pages, and look for the Roy Mustang avatar as I express my opines on those series.
Ah, winter. I have a love hate relationship with it. Love the snow, hate the cold. …Oh, right the anime. You know, despite everyone saying that summer and winter anime generally aren’t as good, I disagree. I ALWAYS find something I like in every season of anime. Plus, if I don’t like anything, I can always spend winter marathoning Rurouni Kenshin (like I’ve been planning to for 6 months now…).
WINTER! MY SECOND FAVORITE SEASON! This is the season where I get to curl up in a ball and not do ANYTHING. Well, for the most part. Until school starts up again. BUT STILL. It’s glorious. It’s all cold outside and you get to bust out your winter gear and it’s so great! The cherry on top of this delightfully cold sundae (Hah. See what I did there?) is that there’s a whole new season of anime! WOOH! Though I haven’t seen many shows that have interested me, I’m hoping, like Hime, that I’ll be proven wrong. So let’s see what’s poppin’!
Jeez it’s winter already? Why is the sun still shining so effin hot? *fist at sun* I’m so sad because I’ve never tasted snow in my seventeen years of life, and probably won’t in the future because I always ended up stuck in tropical countries. Oh well, at least I got my air conditioner. And some anime I know I will like this season. Not all, but maybe some.

Oh man, I’m so glad we are finally done with this. With it on brewing for one and a half month, we sure took out time setting dibs and finding information. Though like every season preview, we had a ball and hope you get an in-depth look at what to watch and skip via Metanorn’s 2012 Winter Anime Catalogue!

Definitely watching Black Rock Shooter! I really enjoyed the OVA. Though I seem to be one of the few who did…

Mouretsu Pirates? Yeah, I’ll watch! I love pirates~

    Will watch Senhime Zesshou Symphgear.

Will definitely watch Rinne no Lagrange.

WHOOO!!!!!! HIGH SCHOOL BOYS!!! I love high school boys! So, Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou is on my plan-to-watch list.

I’ll give Kill Me Baby a shot. It looks like it might be funny.

I’m definitely going to watch Ano Natsu de Matteru. Slice-of-life and romance are probably my favorite anime genres. I loved Toradora and Ano Hana, and I’ve heard wonderful things about Honey & Clover.

MSADNF834brb u!!!!!!!!!! Yeah~ Nisemonogatari!!!!! I love, love, loved Bakemonogatari, so I’m soooo watching this.

Another is probably the anime that I have been looking forward to the most for this season. I love me some horror and mystery. And I love P.A. Works’ animation.

Ah, bishies~ Inu x Boku SS seems interesting enough. Will watch.

TORADORA!!! I loved Toradora so much~ It was so sweet! Even though I like Minorin more than Taiga.

Yeah~ More Steins;Gate! I finally managed to make time to marathon the series and I loved it!

I’m kind of scared to watch Gyo, but I’ll do it anyway. I’ve heard that Junji Ito’s stuff is really… something.

Well, looks like a bunch of interesting stuff this season! Great post guys!

    • Kyokai says:

Thank you! And your list looks pretty awesome as well. The horror seems to be the surprise of this season. ^^

  2. Hime says:

One day I’m going to find something nice to say about the winter season. One day.

  3. Moni Chan says:

This winter season is looking interesting. Not as awesome as fall but that’s to be expected every year

  4. skylion says:

Thanks for this excellent review. I just got back into anime after a few years break. So this is the first time I’ve had access to such a good source. Look forward to trading views with all of you. Especially Fosh. Love ya.

  5. Gantoris says:

Wow! nice round up btw. I dun believe Milky Holmes is getting a season 2 -.-”
And yeah, i like the [Click here for full version]. It really helps alot. HEAPS lot thx.

  6. pp says:

what.. Natsume again? wow that anime never end does it ?

  7. akagami says:

Hmm, so many new shows, so many to sample! I averaged around 50% last season (of the 19 shows I sampled, only watching/watching 10).

I think my biggest disappointments last season were Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!! (the first episode was pretty fun, but then it descended into excessive fanservice) and Guilty Crown (what the heck happened?!?). My sleeper hit was Mashiro Iro Symphony (I went in expecting an average harem show and got something really enjoyable). Hopefully this season will be better!

    I think I’ve narrowed the list to 14 (+1):
Moretsu Uchuu Kaizoku (because pirates > ninjas ^^)
Brave10 (not really expecting much, after the last batch of disappointing Sengoku-era shows, candidate for an early drop)
Aquarion Evol (the first was pretty fun to watch, so I’m just gonna continue the walk)
Zero no Tsukaima F (not sure why I’m watching this. The second and third seasons were ><. But heck, I've done 3 seasons, what's another one? Maybe it'll be like Shana and return to what got me interested at the beginning)
Senhime Zesshou Symphogear (not sure what to make of this, but the premise is different enough that'll I try it – candidate for an early drop)
Rinne no Lagrange (why are they sitting on a dinner plate? Oh, that's a mecha you say? I'm going to watch it to find out if that hamburger tasted good… and maybe it'll be entertaining as well)
Amagami SS Plus (Amagami was love. More Amagami is love.)
Papa no Iu Koto o Kikinasai (premise sounds decent. But ecchi with lolis? Hopefully it won't go that route or it'll get dropped faster than you can blink)
Kill Me Baby (hopefully it'll be funny and not go the route of Nichijou, which I didn't enjoy at all – candidate for an early drop)
Ano Natsu de Matteru (looking forward to this. You had me at Romance.)
Nisemonogatari (Bakemonogatari was win. The sequel? Instant admission with a red carpet)
High School DxD (no idea what this is about, but the character designs look decent. Though from your preview all I got was boobs. So hoping it doesn't turn out that way – candidate for an early drop)
Inu x Boku SS (I can't say what's interesting me. But I'm interested. Catchy name, cute character designs, I'm sold (for at least one or two episodes))
Gokujyo- (not enough information to base an opinion on, so I'll probably watch the first episode to get a feel for it – candidate for an early drop).
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed HD Remaster (because Gundam Seed was the only Gundam I enjoyed. And I want to watch it an x-nth time)

    • SPIRAL says:

      You DROPPED Nichijou…?

      That’s like……

…crap, can’t think of clever response. But that’s okay.
      MERRY CHRISTMAS 😀

      • akagami says:

I watched the first two episodes, and I didn’t find it funny. And the loli professor and wind-up robot girl were just too weird for me. I’ve liked most of the other 4-koma adaptions however… this one just didn’t click.

      • Kyokai says:

akagami, finally I’m not alone in this world for dropping Nichijou! xD

  8. anaaga says:

NOBODY CAN STOP ME FROM ALL OF THOSE YAOI BAITS

  9. Mina says:

Why the hell was I counting their roles if you already did that? XD No… I didn’t know.. and if I see one of my favorites in their I celebrate inside as if it was my own role xD
it’s a hobby of mine to count who has how many roles
I’m looking forward to the next season, with Natsume I’m hyped up! oh and I want to watch that football anime… and nisemonogatari, and don’t ask what else I will watch… damn if the I could just control time…

    • Ness says:

      I know>< If only there was more time.. hahah. I still need to watch Natsume. I am looking forward to that futubol anime too but I might end up checking out the manga... if I have free time. I'm unsure about Nisemonogatari, I still need to finish Bakemonogatari.. uwah, I'm so behind >_>;

    • Kyokai says:

Lol! So, next time when our preview gets published, skip to the round up to save time. :3

Definitely looking forward to Natsume and Nismonogatari (Ness, you gotta watch both! =P)

  10. SPIRAL says:

Gah, it never fails to impress me how other sites do their seasonal previews with a mass photoshop spree while we just get on Skype and do a Podcast.

I have mixed feelings for this season, although I myself probably going to blog Amagami SS+ and Area no Kishi.

I have that strange feeling that Another might flop. More so than Angel Beats.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeaaahhh! I gotta listen to the CSW podcast soon! Can’t wait to hear it xDD

Ah ya I am looking forward to more Amagami SS <3

I hope not, Another looks like a fun series, but never know it could flop.

  11. Snowley says:

    Must watch:
    > 4th season of Natsume
    > Nisenmonogatari (hope Arararagi and Senjougahara will get a lot of screentime!)
    > Brave 10 (beacuse looks kinda like Basara)
    > Another (good horror is good)
    >Ai no kusabi (HUR HUR HUR)
    > Continuing on Mirai Nikki

So many anime to watch when I’ll have midterm exams, why Japan, oh why.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yes! You can never have to much Natsume.

Brave 10, Another and Nisenmonogatari! All look like fun, hopefully you can enjoy some anime.

  12. I’ve been pretty out of it all lately!
BUUT…right now I am literally staring at the screen at this Winter Preview with admiration. The graphics are amazing! Great job as always!
For the coming Winter season I’m mainly looking forward to Another (P.A. Works + interesting premise), Nisemonogatari (SUPERCELL X CLARIS AND AHHHHHHHH), Inu x Boku SS and maybe Kill Me Baby (unusually intriguing). And the Steins;gate movie, of course – I can’t believe I almost forgot about it! Thanks for reminding me! It would be really awesome if it was an epilogue, especially because it’s coming out after Valentines day – I just could get enough of Kurisu x Okarin as well as the sci-fi intrigue.
But before all of that, I must also finish Bakemonogatari!

    • Kyokai says:

Why, thank you! Ness did an amazing job as usual on the graphics this time around as well.

Your choices are all interesting but you definitely need to catch up on Bakemonogatari. ^^

  14. Bob from Accounting says:

*Is one of the people who liked the slice of life bits of Black Rock Shooter* In fact, I genuinely don’t see how it would work without them. And it might be the fact that I’m English, but eight episodes seems fine to me as long as they find the time to give us some vague explanation for WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON.

The main other series I’m interested in is Another, even more so now that Karakuri’s promises of slice of life sliding into gory horror has set the Higurashi-loving part of me into overdrive. Could Another be the worthy successor to my precious Higurashi that Umineko failed to be (NOTE: I’m only talking about the animes here. I know nothing about the original VNs)?

Other than that, nothing’s really grabbing my attention from the previews, so I’ll guess I’ll listen to word of mouth and try some stuff as it comes.

    • Kyokai says:

Some explanation would be really help and I can only hope it doesn’t start out like Guilty Crown. >.>

Another should be interesting with PA Works helming it. Have you checked out Bakemonogatari? You should because it’s follow up is promising as well.

But yeah, there’s always first impressions to look forward to finally make up your mind.

  15. Justin says:

I will be so sad if Daily Lives of High School Boys disappoints. Good thing is, I don’t expect it to!

Also, this guide you guys worked on…so awesome!

    • Kyokai says:

It won’t I can bet. How can you go wrong with 13 minutes’ length? You should check out it’s pre-airs on youtube.

And thank you for the compliment. ^^

  16. Alynn says:

FFFF THERE IS ACTUALLY A LOT FOR ME TO WATCH. Though I better go and catch up on the other series that I need to finish.

    Soooo many comments! >..<
    (I love reading the comments)

    Awesome job guys.

  19. jGLZA says:

Rinne no Lagrange for me – coz its Mecha!

  20. Snippett says:

I just watched Lagrange and it looks promising. I’m not really a mecha fan but this anime has a different fun vibe.

Another anime from this list that I think I’m going to try out is Mouretsu Pirates–another girl power show.

    • Kyokai says:

It’s definitely interesting and what d’ya know, Fosh would be covering both the shows. ^^
