Kantai Collection: KanColle 09 – 12 [END]

Kantai Collection (9)

The Fleet girls need some repairs~

Hello and welcome back to Kantai Collection on Metanorn, but sadly we have reached the end of my favorite series of the winter season! I know I will miss this one even though I think I might be alone in that since most anime fans seemed to avoid this series…

————————————

Leveling Up?!

Kantai Collection (2)

I thought Yuudachi was going to explode! Poi!

Episodes nine and ten brought up a very interesting twist to Kantai Collection with their “upgrade system” which is basically a copy of the evolution system found in every Pokemon game because once the girls reach a certain point in their training they begin to glow? Then again the only time we saw this actually happen with Yuudachi who turned into totally different girl! Just kidding she did grow taller, her hair style changed and she got some new weapons in the process of her upgrade; however Fubuki was confused that she wasn’t the first to get an upgrade because she never really saw Yuudachi training and just assumed that she wasn’t working hard! That is until episode ten which gave Fubuki her upgrade after running and almost getting killed which really upset Mutsuki a lot since she just got over the loss of another friend. That scene was nice and really touching and all, but honestly I have to say that Mutsuki is by far one of the worst characters in the series because she does CRY all the time! I get it you are the token cute character with an super overflow of emotions who just has to feel for each and every girl. I wonder who spent more time crying their eyes out? Mutsuki or Madoka? Anyway! I laughed really hard when Fubuki’s upgrade ended up being only her weapons? Wow nice job.

The Final Battle?!

Kantai Collection (6)

The moe Abyssal girl?

Kantai Collection (7)

DAT KICK YO!!!

Episodes eleven and twelve pick up after the main base is blown up by the Abyssal Fleet and for some reason that makes the commander go missing? I guess that was a way to make the Fleet girls work without him? Anyway the core plot of these final two episodes was to place Fubuki in charge of leading her team to attack MI which I was told is kind of their retelling of the battle of Midway and it ties into Akagi’s nightmare! In the real world four Japanese aircraft carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu, all part of the six-carrier force that had attacked Pearl Harbor six months earlier and a heavy cruiser were sunk and I was reading that the Yamato was meant to be at Midway, but her battleship group wasn’t able to get close enough to the battle in time even though in the anime Yamato was there leading the charge with several other battleships. History fans will probably be mad about all of that, but I don’t really have any problems with them flipping history around to fit the anime because after all the Fleet Girls are technically fighting monster battleships which are totally made up for plot reasons. So how was that final battle for you? Was it awesome or boring? I thought it was really great even though it was kind of random how Taihou appeared out of nowhere and all of the other girls magically popped up after finding some instant repairs. I am sure i’m not alone feeling disappointed that Shimakaze didn’t get to participate in the battle and what was that whole creepy voice Fubuki heard saying “give it back.” I wonder what that means? Give the seas back or give back their souls? Whatever that voice wants it can’t be good and what about Kisaragi’s hair pin floating back to the surface? I still have a feeling that she will come back as an Abyssal fleet girl just to freak Mutsuki out and make her cry some more.

Extra Moe Battleships

See you next time Orca-kun <3

Kantai Collection (10)

Kongo had the best lines.

End thoughts

So what did you think of these four episodes and the series as a whole? Did you have fun watching every week or was it more of a chore to watch weekly? I mean for starters yeah it was tough to break into because most watchers found it to be completely dumb and off the wall, but my defense to those comments about it being way to off the wall will always be anime in general is weird especially military themed anime with cute girls doing stuff like Strike Witches, Girls und Panzer, Upotte and I will even throw in that short five minute episode series Military! Besides the strangeness of Kantai Collection I think the best episodes are probably the non combat episodes with the girls doing slice of life things like the LOLi battleship Curry episode and the other with Fubuki befriending Yamato, but at the same time I also enjoyed the combat episodes even though most watchers will simply complain about the CG being awful! Yeah I can’t defend that because I can somewhat agree; however CG is never really THAT great in any anime! Overall I had a blast with this series and yes I already know there is another season coming out so it looks like we have more story to explore in the future! Also damn I loved listening to the OP every week! Before I wrap up I wonder if any of those fan created ships will appear like U-51, ro-500, Tenryuu, prinz eugen, Murakumo and possibly Amatsukaze? Of course I really have no idea how many are real fleet girls or just fan created because I don’t play the game so if you know how to tell the difference let me know in the comments section.

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! Other than that type of show, I love a good comedy or action series :D

How the hell does that upgrade work? Yuudachi went from loli to sexy in a matter of minutes(hours?) Or maybe we shouldn’t bother given that their baths can heal wounds and they ride on water and shoot cannons in the first place.

As a whole, it was somewhat enjoyable but it was lacking in a lot of things. Mostly it’s the direction it’s heading. Is it about cute ship girls doing cute ship things? A war drama and action? It wanted to do both but it couldn’t focus on either and just failed. It’s confusing even itself as to what type of show it wants to deliver.

There’s also the fact that it seems to be more geared towards fans of the game and didn’t make it easy for those not playing the game to get in to it. And even then I hear that some fans of the game aren’t pleased with what happened. The game doesn’t have a concrete plot I know, but they could have done better and constructed one. The various spinoff manga and novels have some plot in them from what I’ve heard. Instead they tried to place different aspects of the game to please the fans and somewhat failed with it.
And don’t get me started on the Admiral who is just a silhouette and a literal plot device. He might as well not exist at all. Sure, this is more of the girls than the Admiral but they could have given him a more solid form rather than just a shadow nodding off camera.

The positive things that I could point out is probably the voice acting. The seiyuus handling multiple roles like Ayane Sakura and Nao Touyama were excellent. Each voice they do are distinct from one another. The difference of the voice between Takao and Kongou by Touyama and Naka and Nagato by Sakura speaks a lot of their talent.

I’ll watch the sequel as well so I hope they would give it a more defined plot. I might try to play the game as well but the procedure is pretty tedious. And it’s in moonrunes as well. There might be a guide available but that seems to be a pain to read. We’ll see.

Hahaha good question! I was looking at it more like an achievement system with certain girls hitting that “level” of training or DBZ in terms of strength? Then again we hardly saw the others training as much as Fubuki so I really have no clue how it works…

Hmmmm I kind of think the balance of “cute” and “War” was handled nicely in Kantai, but then again I have the same issue you have with this series as I have with like Cross Ange which I feel is unbalanced between comical and OMG WTF.

I suppose that is one way to look at it and I haven’t touched the games, but since I was a HUGE fan of all the artwork and character designs I was ready for Kantai Collection and sort of knew what I was getting into aka moe girls doing military stuffs and for the most part it was that and to my surprise they had a lot of serious stuff and great music as well.

I know right? The actors were fantastic! I was blown away when I learned that one actress was playing like five or more characters!

      True we can only hope~

If you’re going to recreate the Battle of Midway the Japanese don’t necessarily have to lose, but they should lose a couple carriers and one or two other ships.

For me this was a so-so show for most of its run, but this last bit pushed it over the line. I won’t be watching the sequel.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

The series is geared towards the Kancolle fans. Unless you are a serious Kancolle person, you’ll not find anything useful out of it. It just becomes another harem show for the non-Kancolle.

    • BlackBriar says:

Um, I don’t think trying to be historically accurate to the utmost degree is the point or what is meant to be accomplished. It’s already loose enough that the ship names are donned by girls instead of actual ships.

    • Foshizzel says:

True I feel you on that if they wanted to have more shock factor for the finale episode of the first season some girls should have been taken out, but I guess they wanted a happier ending.

  3. Di Gi Kazune says:

    Abyssal moe LOLi~~~

I still prefer Aoki Hagane Kongo.

    • skylion says:

Yep, this show needs it’s LOLi subs..

    • Foshizzel says:

Possibly! I don’t see why not for those fan created or official characters to appear in the second season.

    • BlackBriar says:

I still prefer Aoki Hagane Kongo.

I can easily go with KanColle’s version of Kongo. Arpeggio of Blue Steel’s version took some warming up to.

  4. Highway says:

I liked the show well enough. It wasn’t completely geared towards players, as I didn’t have too much trouble keeping up. The main problems I had were that there were so many characters that they tried to make relevant at the end, who just weren’t throughout the whole rest of the show. How many times did they ever say Takao and Agato’s names in the entire run of the show? Did they ever? But they showed them every episode for a cut. The other problem was that the show just missed the line it was trying to ride with the togetherness slice of life and the exciting battles. The battles always ended up being not that good, neither tactically nor strategically nor action-wise. Show Fubuki’s decision to come to Akagi, not just her showing up. There just wasn’t enough depth there.

I also find it inexplicable that they brought every other ship they had to the final battle, but not Shimakaze. I don’t play the game, nor am I a huge fan of the characters, but from what I can tell, Shimakaze is the single most popular character from the game. And the anime leaves her out of the big finale? Seems like a huge misstep. I can kinda understand leaving Mutsuki out, because you have to have someone to come back to (and that was her role). But just a seemingly poor directorial decision about Shimakaze, especially after she had one episode where they talked her up.

Not a bad show, but another one that could seemingly have easily been better.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

      Season 2’s subtitle: Shimakaze’s no-pan Strikes Back.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah too many characters I can agree with that, but just like something like Cinderella girls they did a good job showing everyone and giving them dedicated episodes and I think that was the goal of season one so that season two can be more story focused maybe?

LOL Yepp I don’t know why they left out Shimakaze since she is the most popular character! Ah well at least Kongou was in the final episode so that made me happy~

    • akagami says:

Agreed, as someone who doesn’t know much about the game or characters (beside the fact that it exists), I really watching the series. Once you got over the water skating part, it ended up being pretty fun!

Some light slice-of-life mixed with action. I would have liked to see more on each of the girls, but given the 1 cour that wouldn’t have been possible.

Looking forward to a second season! Heard there is a movie coming, wonder if that’s a recap or a continuation.

  5. skylion says:

Well, this was a tie-in, a promotion for the browser game; fanservice in the highest degree. But it look like they forgot that a good story sells itself.

The character count was too damn high! They could have started with a core group of characters, and made them memorable in their own arcs, which they kind of did but hey spent to much time with fruitless cameo’s by other characters and groups.

Also, by the end of it, I could only strongly identify the Carriers. Battleships, light cruisers, etc. Who and what were they? What function did they serve? Should I care? Do I need to? If I had those many questions left unanswered by the finale….

    • Foshizzel says:

Possibly! I am curious about the game, but if I really want a battleship game ill just play World of Battleships for my ship to ship combat needs.

I didn’t mind the massive cast of characters even though yes they could have done without a few of the teams, but I guess they had a tough time picking the girls they wanted in the first season…

I guess we can only hope season two answers those questions.

  6. BlackBriar says:

Average level storytelling, shaky directional choices and a fairly likable cast makes KanColle an overall so-so series in consensus. Hits between not bad but not all that great either. An acceptable outlet for killing some excess time on hand. By preference, I’d take the remodeled Yuudachi over her previous self. Would’ve liked to see how Fubuki would look in an altered appearance.

Not that there would be any hype to it, I don’t object to the idea of having a sequel come along. Though it remains unclear how said sequel will be approached.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Though it remains unclear how said sequel will be approached.

      Thanatonium would be involved? 😛

    • Foshizzel says:

It took a while to get going but I had a lot of fun watching all the characters! I will agree that it was so-so in terms of story since it was a bit all over the place, but I have faith season two will be less of LOL WACKY and more story unless they decide to introduce a whole new base of Fleet girls to expand the voice cast.

  7. Namaewoinai says:

Ya know i thought that carrier girl (Akagi) will go
    BOOM, BYE BYE!

but then it was like…HMPH, They Lucky to be Alive…but oh well! and hmmm, These Girls now fighting with bare hands and kicks now, but as an emergency maneuvering that is…but again fair enough and…

so there will be a 2nd season huh…? I wish for the likes of, Ushio, Tenryuu, Amatsukaze and…Bismarck and Prinz Eugen would shown up for the next season…they may not have a plan to show these but…We’re Waiting!
