Remember when Bones made anime? Those were the days… Wait, what? They’re alive again! And they’re making two shows this season (Noragami and Space Dandy), plus two more in the works (Captain Earth and Hitsugi no Chaika)?! This is amazing! Anyway, Noragami is your “basic” girl meets boy story. Except the guy here is a god. And he’s supposed to help the girl with her problems, which she undoubtedly has no shortage of since she’s apparently being bullied. However, our boy has a spin of his own with him being a deity and in process of collecting money for his shrine. This will be interesting.
I see Hiroshi Kamiya and Yuki Kaji as main characters. I’m sold. …Maaya Uchida is in this too? I don’t remember hearing her in anything since Hajime in Gatchaman Crowds (though she was apparently in Outbreak Company last season, I just never watched it), so this should be good. It seems that the director, Kotaro Tamura hasn’t actually directed an entire anime by himself yet (this would be his first one), but apparently he did episode 9 of Baccano. …I don’t remember a single bad episode of Baccano, so hopefully this bodes well for Noragami as a series. And if not, hey, there’s Kamiyan. Really, that’s all anyone should ever need in life.

From the creators behind Cowboy Bepop Bones bring us their next crazy space adventure with Space Dandy and just based off the few trailers that I have seen I can tell that this series will probably be the biggest hit of the winter season, but what is the real plot going to be like besides a dude flying around in space? I have a feeling it will probably have more laughs than an actual plot or will it be just like Cowboy Bebop and give us a mix of everything? Also at the same time a lot of new fans will discover this series because it is also premiering on Toonami for the english dub audience so I will have to try both of them as they air! Other than that I am ready for this!
Let’s start with this concept, BISHIES IN SPACE. Hey, I can dream, right? Jokes aside, it’s all about our main protagonist, Dandy in space! And I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who got JP flashback from Redline. But even if our hero sports a very fluffy pompadour, he’s handsome and being voiced by Junichi SUAVE Suwabe (Archer in Fate/stay night, Jinguji in UtaPri and Aoimine in Kuroko no Basuke). His mission in life is to discover new species of aliens for rewards. You can call him a space bounty hunter, hunting different alien species and selling them in a very competitive market for monehhs. His companions in this ever changing foray is a rundown robot named QT and an alien named Meow, who predictably resembles a cat. Now your imagination would be the limit for his adventures.
This is brought to us by Bones and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, the same dude who gave us Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Sakamichi no Apollon and like some of his prominent works, Yoko Kanno is composing the ending theme to be sung by Etsuko Yakushimaru, who became popular with her Arakawa Under the Bridge, Tatami Galaxy and Penguindrum Singles. The other theme is not so bad either. Oh man, so addictive. This is one of the most hyped anime of this season and there is nothing dubious for us to think it won’t be good. Let’s enjoy the ride, shall we?

Hot on the heels of Galilei Donna is yet another anime about famous historical figures somehow making a comeback in the modern era. I hope I discover the cure to cancer so someone will make an anime about me in the future. Anyways, Nobunagun simultaneously fuses the ever-popular Nobunaga/Sengoku era plot point with figures such as Ghandi, Galileo and Newton being used to power magical weapons. I can’t imagine what kinds of powers these weapons will have, but it’s got to be good. The main character, of course, has a gun infused with the spirit of Nobunaga – which she uses to save her friend.
It seems like a very playful, tongue-in-cheek anime that will go all out. It could either be great for fun and giggles or so painfully stupid that the first episode will be enough to make your eyes roll out of your head in derision. The fact that the relatively green studio Bridge (founded in 2007 without many main shows under their belt other than things like Devil Survivor 2) is combined with a director who has worked on a disparate mix of shows make it hard to predict which of the two it’s going to be. I’m hoping for something as absurd as Phi Brain, with a little more action compared to puzzles.

Starring Asami Seto and Ai Kayano, and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, the director of my favorite anime Girls und Panzer, this manga sourced show is one that doesn’t seem to be getting a lot of hype, but might be a fun watch.

Takeshi is a seemingly normal high school boy who has a fake couple relationship with his childhood friend Kurumi. But one day he meets a girl named Mui collapsed on the ground, who apologizes to him because she’s a magician, and she’s now turned him into a magician too. From a seemingly well-received, but generally under the radar, manga, it seems sure that Mui’s appearance will force changes in his relationship with Kurumi, and draw him into a world of fighting, both with magic and weapons.
Madhouse has been one of the studios, which I’ve followed recently and except for their Marvel titles, most of their work turns out to be good to exceptional (Tatami Galaxy, Chihayafuru, Aoi Bungaku, etc,). The premise of the story gives a feel of fate/stay night (the VN, anime doesn’t exist!), and even the characters designs are a bit similar with Saber and Gilgamesh already there. So, if this is an inspiration or not, I hope it turns out to be a good addition this season. As well, the cast is very varied and has popular cast as Miyano Mamoru (Light in Death Note, Fushimi in K, Tokiya in Uta Pri), Nao Toyama (rising female seiyuu recently voiced roles in Oreshura, SNAFU, Eureka Seven AO, etc.), for main roles while Asami Seto, Jun Fukuyama, Suzumura Kenichi, Nakai Kazuya and Okamoto Nobuhiko. With magic in the mix, I would be looking forward to all these seiyuu play their characters perfectly.

By the time Buddy Complex airs we will have said our final goodbyes to Valvrave as we wait to see what Sunrise does next but if you are reading any of the Winter charts you already know about this series, right? If not let me fill you in I guess they have decided to do something that all the cool kids of today seem to enjoy! By creating a combination of SAO because the main character enters “another world” to fight other Gundams err giant robots to save the universe!? Yeah that does not sound amazing at all, but Sunrise isn’t really known for having the most mind blowing plots for anime. Also who knew that Kana Hanazawa, Marina Inoue, Rina Satou and Tomokazu Sugita were voicing characters in this mecha series? That means Mr. Sugita is in both of the winter mecha anime? Awesome! While I am not super excited for this series I will probably watch it and who knows maybe I can look past the stupid name and enjoy it? I mean I thought Majestic Prince sounded horrible but I came to love it while it aired.

Do you like…card games??? Okay, as much as I want to laugh and toss this in the kiddie bin with some of the other series, I have to admit I’m a sucker for card games. I was captivated by Yu-Gi-Oh! for years – and I don’t just mean when I was a kid, either. Z/X Ignition will most likely be somewhere along the same veins – a card game anime with supernatural elements to make the stakes way higher than your corner store tournament. I like my card games with creatures from parallel worlds fighting each other to the death. I can’t think of a better way to solve an inter-dimensional war than with card games. Basically, this show will end up being as dumb as a pile of bricks and as logical as a Salvador Dali painting. But hey…there are card games!

FK YA MECHA! I am kinda hyped for this because first off its mecha and everyone knows I love watching robots smack the hell out of each other and have you looked at the amazing voice cast? We have Mamoru Miyano, Tomokazu Sugita and Yoko Hikasa rounding up the more known actors but what also makes this series interesting is all the characters are based off various historical characters much like the main cast of PhiBrain like Oda Nobunaga, Alexander the Great, Leonardo Da Vinci, Jeanne kaguya D’arc, Magellan and Gaius Julius Caesar.
However, I guess they are people from different worlds so maybe the characters are just alternate versions? The available premise does talk about different planets and how Jeanne with Da Vinci meets Oda Nobunaga, supposedly the greatest fool of all. I have a feeling it will be a new spin around their historical story. Besides all of that I really want Nobunaga the Fool to be more of a Stardiver or Majestic Prince type of mecha series and less like Kakumeiki Valvrave in terms of plot and overall tone because I really want this to be a successful series.
At first, I was reluctant when I saw the name Jeanne Kaguya D’Arc. How in the world can she be a Western person with that kind of name? Putting the name aside, I was sold when I saw the trailer for this anime. I was awed with the Oriental mecha Nobunaga was riding. It’s a fresh concept that is rarely done. Actually, I’m awed with the story as well. I’m a fan of the whole combine-east-and-west concept thing, and I’m seeing it in this anime. With the combination of Kawamori Shoji (AKB0048, Escaflowne movie, Macross 7 & Frontier) and Satelight, I think this anime is worth the try..

The only thing I really know about Yasuomi Umetsu is he created a bunch of anime, but I really know him for Kite, Mezzo DSA and Mezzo Forte, which is technically a hentai OVA series. So yeah careful with that last one! Besides those three shows I know he has helped design and create other hit series like Galilei Donna from the previous season. However, we are here to talk about Wizards Barristers: Benmashi Cecil, which looks to be a hyper action series about a young girl named Cecil, who uses magic to take down criminals and she doubles as a lawyer in training? The setting is a 2018 Tokyo, where normal humans coexist with magic users. This is the reason a magic courtroom exists for lawsuits regarding them.
I wonder if there are any OBJECTION magic spells?! Judging off the trailers I was blown away by the action scenes! Also since the director is not shy about doing a spin off hentai series it kind of tells me that this series will probably have tons of fanservice shots filling the screen, which I can easily see plenty of people dropping this series early on, but who knows maybe I will be eating my words and there might not be any fanservice at all? Anyway I can’t wait to see what happens with this series.

I really don’t know what has me so interested in Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvezda or as me and Skylion have dubbed it as Evil Loli Overlord, which I think if very fitting because we really have no idea what this will even be about besides a little girl hellbent on world conquest? Wha- wait a minute, it sounds like Ika Musume should have recruited this team. Anyway on the voice acting side of things it will be great to hear Kana Hanazawa and Mariya Ise and wow I almost forgot that this was being animated by A-1 Pictures who always does excellent work along with character designs by Sasaki Kiego who worked on Ao no Exorcist, Guilty Crown, Fullmetal Alchemist, Sengoku Basara, TTGL and xxxHOLIC to name a few. So yeah I am just ready for something fun and interesting and I really hope Sekai Seifuku delivers something like that.

The story has gotten better and wilder now that the one responsible for the murder of Ryuko’s father has been revealed. One of the favorites is obviously Mako for her hyperactive antics. Never a dull moment.

Some corrections:
1. Since Yowamushi Pedal was also listed, Gundam Build Fighters and Hajime no Ippo Rising should be listed as well for Fall shows that will carry over for next season.
2. Gundam BF should be listed under Sunrise in the Round Up page and Ippo for Madhouse(listing HxH is probably pushing it).
And I counted…22 shows that I plan to watch. A step down from the 30 titles last Fall but more or less on par with how many I pick up every season. Coupled with the two-cour shows I’m carrying over(15) and, yeah, I am so dead. Watching anime is suffering. Why do I do this and what did I do to deserve this? щ(ﾟДﾟщ)
The ones I’m looking forward to are Nisekoi, Mahou Sensou, Space Dandy, Gin no Saji, Chuu2 Ren, Buddy Complex and Seitokai Yakuindomo*. So yeah, I’m gonna need a lot of luck to survive this.

Nope, been working for quite some time now. Not really a hard job and I manage to watch anime when I go home. I even sneak in reading a volume or two of an LN at work 😉
It’s still quite a lot of titles to watch though so balancing time is crucial. I’ll manage somehow. At least I hope so.
Yep, those are on my list to watch as well. I’m still undecided on the other Nobunaga anime though. One Nobunaga is probably enough for me.

No worries, I am reading the KnK LN at work too. xD Though, my work hours are longer and ugh. I am still doing this because well I love the community and Metanorn being my second home. :3
And yeah, I saw the preview and like a Type-Moon tard sniffed hard and said, this is so fanmade! I mean, they are basically Fate/Zero shots and voice-overs along with some FSN and UBW clips and the actual VN screenshot at the end. Nothing new so I’m wondering if they have actually started production work or this is a teaser for reveal for this being a reboot or HF adaptation.

Oh I know. Being a Type-Moon fan can really make ANYONE a patient fool because you have to wait for everything forever. Remember, Mahoyo was supposedly getting subs this year but oh well, another year gone for waiting. Though, at least for Mirai Fukuin, I can assure that with BD release, UTW would be all over each other to finish it but with the kind of competition that is going on these days, an/other sub group/s might pick it up.

Yeah but that’s scheduled for Spring 2014 so you’re still in for a wait. The second season for Prisma Illya has yet to be announced with a release date. But this might lead to criticism and I might be part of it. If Fate/Stay Night is getting a reboot then there shouldn’t be a reason for Tsukihime not to get the same treatment. I demand equality!!!

Good job on the preview team! My lack of participation comes mostly from my return to writing retirement and general lack of interest in shows this season. There’s older shows and movies I’d like to get to, and I have PS4 games to play, too!
Of the series premiering in Winter ’14, I’m only intending to look at 3 of them. Space Dandy because of the hype, Silver Spoon because I enjoyed the first 11 episodes lots and it has a very similar comfort level of enjoyment that Space Bros has brought me weekly, and Nisekoi because I’ve enjoyed the chunk of manga I’ve read so far and am curious of Shaft and Shinbo (though I thought Sasami-san was horrible).
Hoozuki no Reitetsu looks the best out of the shows I’m passing on, and while I saw and liked season 1 of Chuu2Koi, I feel I’ve seen plenty enough of that series and can’t gather any interest in a season 2.

You’ve compared Space Bros and Gin no Saji well because I kept up with both shows even when I was travelling, I like these two so much. And I hated Sasami-san too. I just couldn’t connect with the story at all, so not everything Shinbo produces (including Maria Holic), turns out gold.
Hozuki for now looks like a trap to me, something like that Cuticle Tantei Inaba, which I thought would be great but was just average. But as the dude looks like Snape and I like the art style, I hope it would be something around black comedy rather than downright weird comedy.

As usual, Winter doesn’t seem to be that impressive with the series it’s showcasing. In general, they seem pretty average but hopefully there’ll be some hidden gems to keep us busy until Spring. I try to have as much variety as I can so I try to watch as much as possible and so there would also be something to pass the time. Sometimes I don’t always manage to watch all that’s on my list and it would fall into backlog so I’m taking advantage of Fall’s end and the two cour anime break to catch up on some shows like Gingitsune and Kyousougiga.
As for the list, I forgot to add Double Circle, Neppu Kairiku Bushi Road, Strange+ and Pupa. So the total number of Winter animes is actually 23 instead of 19. Plus, I’m still following most of the ongoing Fall 2013 animes and there’s 9 of them making a grand total of 32. I’ll get through somehow but something tells me some are going to get dropped to lighten the load.

Well, come to think of it I didn’t have much expectations for this fall either(by fall standards though) but it had a few nice surprises.Heck, one in particular that I had mediocre expectations AT BEST for turned out to be my favorite show of the year.
I also ended up dropping a few as well though and I have no doubt I’ll do the same again. This is actually a really long list for me to have for the winter season as my watch-list for a rich season like fall & spring contains about 10-12 shows. I’ll be surprised if I’ll watch more than 1/3 of them beyond 3-4 episodes and I’ll probalby end up dropping a few after the 1st episode.
Regardless of what I’ll end up dropping though, I find the process of trying out the new shows when they make their premiere quite fun. It’s the time when almost anything can turn out to be good(I remember even having some hopes for this thing).So as much as some of us claim to keep their expectations in check(*raises hand*), it’s still the moment when we’re the most hopeful, IMHO.

As usual, I tend not to get too hyped up for shows that aren’t out yet. Personally, I think my methodology of not being too excited for them allows me to keep from putting expectations on them that they might not live up to. Or maybe it’s just that I’m more forgiving than most people about silly shows. 🙂
That said, I am most interested in Witch Craft Works and Nourin, although I’m kind of hoping Yukarin sings in the more grown up voice she has, not the cutesy one. The PV video isn’t bad, it’s kind of on the line.

That’s a wise strategy. Expectations are what sometimes ruin a show.
For example, I went to watch The girl who leapt through time expecting that it would be stronger than 5cm per second (cuz my lecturer told me it was, in her opinion) but it wasn’t. It wasn’t even close o-o in my opinion, at least.

Heh, both of those shows are ones that I’m not really keen to watch, given what I’ve heard of their story arcs. Voices from a Distant Star and Kowarekake no Orgel almost killed me, and after that I decided I was pretty much done with sad OVA’s.

See, with me and those shows, the main meaning is overwhelmed by “We had to have this tremendous sadness inflicted on everyone in the story” so it’s like a candle a half mile away, completely dwarfed by the unhappiness.

Both Garden of Words and A Girl Who Leapt Through Time are not particularly sad. They are very uplifting and end with a bit of hope rather 5cm, which ends at a very sad note.

I think it’s the exact opposite. On first glance, 5cm per second may have ended on a sad note, but when you look closer, you understand that the sad ending is actually a beautiful beginning.
Though this movie really is sad, that’s the beauty of it, if you ask me. It’s sad and nostalgic, but beautiful and powerful at the same time

Dude, I know where you are coming from. I’ve seen all Clannad so yeah. Key can be very sadistic and with JC adapting Little Busters, the anime just never piqued my interest. I might play the VN some time later but I am staying AWAY from Refrain for sure.

I’ve been pretty disappointed in Little Busters and Refrain. And if this is what Key brings, I’m not interested in their other stuff. Ersatz emotion, extreme manipulation, trying to pass off selfishness as ‘for your best interests’, needless ‘heroic sacrifices’.

IMHO, you have missed a lot of the points of the show not to mention you have some heavy negative bias to it. But w/e, I’m not the type who go all out when my opponent have no intention to change his views or listen to me.
Also, that a bad way to view things. Sure they may share some signature styles and in Jun Maeda works similar themes, but they are explored differently in each works. (Or so I’m told) In fact, peeps who played their 2nd latest work Rewrite have mentioned that its a pretty different entry frm their past works.

Hmmmmmmm…. for me, it’s more like I-just-don’t-have-enough-time-in-the-day rather than burning out. These days I’m lucky if I can squeeze in two shows a day.
