Animax Carnival Coverage

Get ready for the fun… and the crowd.

Basically I didn’t prepare myself for the event because the cosplay competition was on the first day and I couldn’t join since I’m not a Astro (Malaysia’s Commercial Direct-broadcast TV Service) customer. So, I thought the second day would have nothing much except for the games. Little did I know that there were still cosplayers lurking the surrounding of the event area during the second day. Yeah… I didn’t prepare a good camera during that time so I had to stay put with my 3MP mobile phone camera… For those who don’t know, Animax is an international TV channel that broadcasts anime in many countries. Check out the wiki for more info. This is the first time ever for Animax to have a carnival and the venue was an open area with a stage in a shopping complex called 1 Utama. It’s usually rare to have anime events here so it’s something the public don’t see much or maybe not at all (cosplayers especially). Now then, let the carnival begin~

I strolled into the place with much expectation

The admission is free, really. The one thing I’m amused is that Animax actually gave out lots of things for free to the public not just the entrance fee. The staff gave you an entrance band to wrap around your hand and a game card (no picture, sorry). The game card is a card with six circles on it for the games available. Details of which are:

1. Plinko

Plinko is game in which a player is given three metal balls, which needs to be put on one of the slots (picture right side) and let it roll down the board. You win when at least one of your balls end up in the winning slot (one of the slot at the end of the board). By winning, you get a smiley star chop at one of the circles on your card, two memo books and two postcards. By losing, you will get an ‘X’ chopped on the circle, one memo book and two postcards.

2. Toss the ring

This is the most difficult game among the six games (to me). A player has three rings and they need to hoop their ring onto the poles. When you successfully hoop into the poles with stars at the bottom, you get a smiley star chop and a memo book with a big paper bag. If one of your ring hoops the little doll, you get an extra notebook. Lose and you are given an ‘X’ and a memo book.

3. Tic-Tac-Toss

A player is given four bean bags to toss on the board to form a line like a normal tic-tac-toe. Winner gets a smiley star chopped and a memo book with paper bag. Loser gets an ‘X’ and a paper bag. Also, sorry for no pictures for the remaining games. 4. Hook and fish: A fishing game in which a player needs to catch a hooked ball within a time limit. Winner gets a smiley star chopped and ‘something’ (I forgot). Loser gets just an ‘X’. 5. Smash the cans: Player is given three balls to take down a tower of cans. Winner gets a smiley star chopped and ‘something’ (I don’t remember getting anything). 6. Mini golf: The name explains it. This is a bonus game, where everyone gets a smiley star chop whether you hit the golf ball into the hole or not. Those who holed-in get a pen as an extra. You are required to play all the games and get the chops. Participants with at least 4 smiley star chops can exchange for official anime merchandise. You need to roll a fortune wheel to determine what prize you get. There were three prizes: an Animax T-shirt, a pillow case with a pillow (Haruhi or 07-Ghost print) or a Last Exile: Fam of the Silver Wing tag clip. I got a pillow case… Though I wanted the T-shirt… Other than the carnival games, there were stage games and other activities as well. I won’t explain the stage games in detail as I only played one game.

Baby Beel coming to Animax Carnival all the way from Japan

Yes it’s FREE. You can eat as much as you like if the man allows

Many of you would have already realized how rich Animax is. They gave all that free merchandise like it was nothing, even candy floss. I was really surprised when I got free stuff even when I lost a carnival game.

Look at all the scribbles

There was a signature board put out for the public to scribble with marker pens lying around the bottom. The board was two sided, one side for the first day and the other for the second day.

Play all you want. It’s ALL FREE

Sony PS3 was one of the sponsors for this event and they had a booth for people to play titles like FFXIII-2, Tekken and Uncharted. There’s nothing much to tell about the carnival in itself as it was small and not like a full blown convention. Overall though, I still had fun playing the games for the sake of getting freebies. The real deal of happening was on Day 1 so I missed quite a lot on cosplayers. I still snapped some remaining cosplayers before heading home. Cosplay Snaps:

All the K-On! fans, please stand up!

Watch Animax and hope for a recorded feed. I might probably be appearing since I played a stage game. Check out the website for info of what I left out. I will continue to write more postson conventions and carnivals from Malaysia in the future if Boss-lady Kyokai would allows me. So expect more of me. Toori signing out~

  1. T.K. says:

Oh hey! That Baby Beel was at AFA last year if I recall. XD

Looks pretty fun but seems like it’s mostly a publicity event for the Animax channel. Pretty jelly of all the freebies though.

    • Toori-chan says:

That Baby Beel was so off. The actual one don’t even have a diaper on.

It is pretty much a publicity event for the channel as I can see Astro advertising for sign up as well.

I have a lot of freebies (memo books especially) to spare~

  2. Jrow says:

The wall drawings are really nice, especially BRS.

Seemed like a fun time. What would be next on the Malaysian convention circuit?

  3. BlackBriar says:

Nice coverage on the carnival, Toori-chan. Everytime I see convention posts like this, it makes me want to be there. If I were there, I’d be all over the PS3 section especially when you get to play for free. The wall of drawings was too great not to compliment.

    • Toori-chan says:

Thx BlackBriar. That’s why I’m here to cover all those things that you had missed~

The PS3 section was really packed with people waiting to play so I didn’t bothered to take my chances on FFXIII-2.

IKR? Those scribbles are awesome. Makes me feel proud being a Malaysian.

  4. Da5id says:

    *checks the date*

    FUCK.

  5. Overcooled says:

WOW, so many cons going on where you live. We only get one per year (as far as I know…) where I live. I recall you covering something a few months before as well.

This looks really fun and interactive. Most of the time you need a lot of money to do ANYTHING at a con – but here they have demos, carnival games, cotton candy, white boards…I like it! I WANT TO DO EVERYTHING!!!

I’m playing Hakuouki right now…seeing cosplay makes me rather pleased =w= Nice coverage, Toori!

    • Toori-chan says:

Thx OC. Anime is quite a big thing in Malaysia and the cosplay community is pretty big so we need more events to hold more cosplay competitions. I did cover Malaysia’s largest anicon “Comic Fiesta” few months back.

You wouldn’t have the time to do everything because the crowd just slows you down.

I’m glad you liked the cosplay.

  6. FirstImpulse says:

“All the K-on fans, stand up!”

    I really stood up… XD

  7. Gecko says:

Gosh, I wish I could sneak over to Malaysia to go to all of these cons. But alas, I have school.
Great coverage! Thanks for taking pictures and writing about it as always! 🙂

    • Toori-chan says:

When’s your school holidays? I might be able to mark you up for some later cons. I need to get myself a camera soon. Mobile phone camera is so not reliable.

  8. Miyu says:

Toori! YOU’RE BACK AGAIN WITH MOAR ANIME CONVENTIONS AGAIN! I missed you. xD

Woah I’ve never been to a con that’s so interactive! All those games and stuff look interesting *w* Also, that’s not fair >: I want free candyfloss too!! Nice coverage!

Btw, did you know that there’s going to be an AFA in Malaysia too this year? ^~^ The main event is still going to be in Singapore, but Malaysia’s going to be part of the fun too!~ ♥ THAT MEANS YOU WON’T BE COMING TO SINGAPORE ANYMORE (;_;) but at least you’ll enjoy it over there~

    • Toori-chan says:

Miyu! I missed you as well. XP

It’s a carnival, not an actual convention. Free candyfloss is awesome~

Seriously? That will be so awesome!!! I will never get a chance to go to AFA if they just do it in Singapore. Don’t worry, I decided to come to Singapore every CNY if college doesn’t pile up on me.

  9. tatsuya says:

hey look it me over there ^^

  10. Kyokai says:

I’m amazed at the free stuff. This looks more like an activation than a convention but definitely Animax guys did a good job of it.

Keep on covering ’em, Toori. I will never say no and keep on coming up with awesome cosplay one-liners. xD

    • Toori-chan says:

The next one will be a con called “C2AGE” on 18-20th May. I do hope I can make time for it since college is starting soon.

  11. Yippy says:

I was planning on going, but I ditched at the last minute. There wasn’t much that interested me after reading the ads. Still, I guess it’s a good chance for cosplayers to meet up and for anime/manga culture exposure.

Thanks for writing up this post on your spare time! =)

    • Toori-chan says:

Nothing much to see really. It’s just the games and freebies that is good about it.

      • Yippy says:

Ah well, can’t blame them-a good and memorable event takes a lot of resources and planning. Did you see Alodia there? I heard she was a guest.

        • Toori-chan says:

She was a guest judge for the cosplay competiton on Day 1 which was open for cosplayers and Astro subscribers only. I went on Day 2 where it was open for public.

  12. Skyrae says:

    @-@ I was there…

  13. Skyrae says:

Kinda xD the queue for each game was long so I didn’t bother lining up. I did enjoy seeing the cosplays though. Unfortunately I only went on day 2 so I didn’t get to see the cosplay contest on day 1 xD I hope I can go for C2AGE and AFA though but it’s my spm year D:

  14. Toori-chan says:

I went on Day 2 as well. There wasn’t so much good cosplayers compared to Day 1. I spent most of the time lining up for the games and took the pictures later on.

I hope I could join C2AGE and AFA Malaysia as well this year but since I started college I might not have the chance to go especially AFA Malaysia as it’s near my semester exam.

You can still go for C2AGE and AFA Malaysia. Just study harder for it later on. And also pray that Comic Fiesta doesn’t clash with SPM dates.
