First Impressions – Dragon Ball Chou

Goku is happy to be back!

Well Dragon Ball is finally back, but since this is the sub version I am not that hyped because I am so used to the dub version, at least this is somewhat new content for fans of the series.

Dragon ball is back!!

Damn it Goku stop destroying the earth.

I am quite happy to see Dragon Ball come back and like I said in my original write up for our top five summer shows Dragon Ball Z was one of many series that got me into anime, but will the nostalgia get the better of me? Probably! Then again I know this is brand new content or is it? I know Beerus appears in the episode which makes me a little annoyed because this looks to be a recap of battle of gods movie? I don’t understand why Toei feels the need to do that other than making more money? If anything the movies have proven there are die hard fans of the franchise so doing a new Dragon Ball series was going to happen one way or another.

This is why you don’t drink and drive.

Story wise this takes place right after the Majin Buu arc so Goku doesn’t have his brand new super Sayjin god form or second god form from The Resurrection of F movie, but after a short recap we learn that chi chi has ordered Goku to get a job since they need money and if he is able to keep the job she will let him go train with King Kai. If anything can motivate Goku to work it’s either training or food! Besides the silly comical bits Goku’s youngest son Goten is trying to get a wedding gift for his brother Gohan who is marrying Vadel aka Mr Satan’s daughter who is currently super famous because everyone thinks he saved the world from Majin Buu? Yeah the earthlings are so dumb, but in a funny turn of events he gives the prize money to Goku who was the real hero who saved the world from the threat of Buu! This of course makes chi chi very happy she happily lets Goku leave to go train.

End thoughts

This was a fun first episode that reminded me why I love Dragon Ball! Yeah this episode wasn’t anything AMAZING and it didn’t contain any kick ass action, but Dragon Ball has a similar vibe that Gintama does because it balances comical, drama and action; however my only complaint comes down to the sub vs dub because I grew up listening to Sean Schemmel as Goku instead of Masako Nozawa who is the original Goku! So why the issue? I just think her voice for Goku makes him sound like a dying cat especially when it comes down to the fighting! I know that ill get used to it eventually, but yeah what did you think about this episode? While I don’t plan or reviewing it every week I will definitely keep watching.

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! Other than that type of show, I love a good comedy or action series :D

What is the power of this show? IT’S OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!

Okay, got that out of my system. 😛

I haven’t seen this though I’d like to. The problem is I’m not a fan of the Japanese audio option when it comes to Dragon Ball in general because it sounds really off. Preference goes to the English dub since that’s what I grew up with.

Chou is confirmed 100 episodes long, that’s 2 years’ worth of time. So that’ll have to be the waiting time to see the series in English. Unless Funimation gets enough to start broadcast dubbing like they’ve been doing these past few seasons. Their seasonal anime lists just keep getting bigger.

I grew up listening to Sean Schemmel as Goku instead of Masako Nozawa who is the original Goku!

That’s part of my reasoning right there. It’s still surprising. Nozawa is pushing on 79 years old and is still going. Makes it sad Linda Young, the original voice of Frieza, isn’t reprising her role. Especially considering that new upcoming DBZ movie, Resurrection “F”.

I think this is one of the rare instances where I will concede that the English dub is better than the original Japanese audio. This was the first Dragon Ball show I’ve seen ever (in English or Japanese), and even the dead English voices would probably be a better fit, even if marginally. The voices just don’t match the characters.

I haven’t started, nor I am I going to start on a journey of over 9000 episodes of this. The thought of 3 episodes of powering up an attack is scary.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yep! No offence to Masako who I’am sure loves being able to play Goku for so long! Also Naruto and Luffy are also voiced by females in sub form and dub so it works for some shounen characters all but Ichigo who is done by Johnny Young Bosh.

Funimation will dub Dragon Ball Chou eventually! I wish they did a similar thing they did with Space Dandy and air a dub at the same time, but I guess that is a bit tough.

In the near future, I’m betting Gintama will mercilessly parody Dragonball Chou. Just like Hijikata’s quest for a cigarette and smoking place turned into searching for the Zuru-zuru Balls and fighting Frieza Brieza…

  4. zztop says:

Ironically, Toriyama Akira’s post-Dragonball mangas have failed to reach DB’s success, most only lasting 1 volume.

He’s admitted being burnt out on fighting manga, and his ex-editor believes Toriyama should’ve ended Dragonball after the Frieza arc: “…he could have went on to produce a 3rd hit series”.

    • BlackBriar says:

Yet Toriyama’s suddenly made two more movies when number 13: Wrath of the Dragon was supposed to be the last (Battle of Gods being number 14 and Resurrection “F” being number 15) and a whole new series nearly two decades later. Something must have re-inspired him and given new ideas.

    • Foshizzel says:

Wow ending it after Freeza? That would have been CRAZY since the end of that arc involves Goku “dying” since namek explodes!? I mean I know he lives, but that was only because it continued with the androids+Cell saga.
