First Impressions – Aquarion Logos

Time for some hawt gattai action.

GO AQUARION!! Those words always get me pumped for giant combining robots, but ya just like Skylion said the OVA was also included in this first episode pushing it to a fifty minute episode which explains why Anime News Network said this series would have twenty-six episodes! Anyway let’s get to the actual episode and a short recap of the OVA.

———————————-

The Gattai is back! It’s been quite some since we saw the likes of this franchise. We had an OVA that bridged the original series with EVOL. But now, it seems like we are entering a new world.

Are You Ready to Gattai!?

Everyone gets naked in the OVA.

When I heard there was a third season of this addictive and crazy mecha series I was so excited because loved the first two seasons of Aquarion! My love of this franchise isn’t just because of the giant robots, but the cast of characters keeps things interesting even though you could argue that each season is the same since they all deal with the idea of past lovers from thousands of years ago being reincarnated to meet again thanks to “destiny” which is true; however it’s always HOW those characters meet that make it all the more fun! So yeah romance is a thing in the Aquarion universe and the OVA reminds us about! So what was the OVA about? For starters it was a crossover that involved the main Aquarion teams from season one and season two coming together to fight and help Yunoha‘s ancestor get with Shin but for followers of EVOL we knew him as “Jin” and due to some rip in space time or were they alternate versions of Yunoha and Shin? Either way it was simply exploring the ideas of paralle worlds and alternate timelines. While that was great and full of feel good emotional stuffs I loved it for one simple reason THE DAMN MUSIC WAS AMAZING thanks to THIS SONG! ohhh man I have missed that so much, but the coolest moment as watching both Aquarion machines fight and it all ended with double infinity punches that wrapped around the earth?! Wow that was the best ending ever.

The alternate Yunoha was so cute!

Now for Aquarion Logos! This episode started off just like most new seasons of Aquarion, but this one kind of changed things by already having our core team of five mecha pilots without going into training themed episodes for every new pilot they recruit; however I fully expect there to be certain episodes dedicated to how each character joinedthe team and future training they need to achieve perfect Gattai. Another thing I loved was the main character Akira Kaibuki who I kept calling Haru from Free since they are voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki, but I thought his “I’m gonna be a hero” mentality fit nicely because he appears to be a very helpful person and quite skilled at getting out of cuffs? Not to mention sneak into the main base and steal one of the spare Aquarion units?! Who is this guy!? Besides that we met Kokone Kikogami who is shy and uses her phone to talk to people much like Celty of Durara, but I also thought was the main love interest for Akira? I was wrong because I think it is actually Maia Tsukigane who is quiet but I think she will be vocal in her actions. While those three were fun to see I think everyone is curious about Karan Uminagi which is the token LOLi of the series.

Pacific Rim style mecha combat?

So who is the big bad evil guy this time? I really don’t recall his name, but I know he is voiced by Jouji Nakata aka Kirei Kotomine from the Fate series and his way to attack the earth involved him removing or altering certain Kanji from the Japanese language? The first word he removed or messed with was twist? So the world started to get twisted meaning power poles, twisters, belts and seat belts choking people and so on just to cause some random chaos! That is a interesting concept at least for me, but I will agree with anyone who thinks that it sounds stupid, so yeah it looks like words will be a overall theme this time.

Lego My Logos

Soon she will appear~

Since the Aquarion franchise usually takes place in far flung space it’s hard to get a bead on the setting LOGOS occupies. It seems to be one of those 10 minutes into the future type deals.  Its familiar, but the differences are pretty marked; super technology and the like. But that hardly matters, as the franchise will always have some things in common that tie the parts together.

Old woman-“What’s a Fakku?”     Kokone-“uhh…nothing important grandma.”

This is, of course, giant robots fighting the good fight, and the pilots that have that special something to operate them. But in the Aquarion universe they have to have some strange, magical, and very powerful enemy to defy them at nearly every turn. In LOGOS that is basically a super wizard that has command of the over real world object, places, and concepts that Kanji characters represent. It’s pretty darn far fetched, but not any more or any less than anything Aquarion has thrown at us before.

Extra Aquarion

Gotta love those new flight suits.

aquarionLOGOS (7)

Kokone is kinda cute.

aquarionLOGOS (8)

This series will have some fun expressions.

Off to a good start on the fanservice department.

aquarionLOGOS (12)

These two should be fun together!

End thoughts

LOGOS and the OVA were amazing to watch for any Aquarion fan! I know I will miss the main cast of EVOL, but as far as LOGOs goes it set up the main villain nicely even though the word thing was interesting it still felt a bit dumb. I can’t wait to see Akira interact with the other characters and I also agree with Skylion that the first time that the new Aquarion formed was weak and was totally missing that EPIC WOW moment especially with the weak OST since AKINO is not involved for the opening! So what did you like about this and are you going to watch more? I guess just like Symphogear if you saw the first two you might as well watch the third season right?

Aquarion is always a welcome breath of fresh air into the mecha genre. It has over the top, weird ideas to tackle each and every week. LOGOS doesn’t seem to have much connective tissue to previous installments, but this first episode launched us into new territory, so I guess we’ll have to wait to see how it all plays out. I was expecting the usual ecchi feel to the gattai sequences, and was taken aback to see how far that was dialed out. But this crew looks like it’s going to be entertaining. We have the studious, the stoic, the brash, the dedicated, and the quiet. This was a fairly decent first episode, and a start to some interesting things. I won’t look at sushi or storm clouds quite the same way again…

Please impress me with your persuading skills. Having watched the doggy Apollon, Touma and his lover Gen, persuading me to watch #3 should be easy.

    😛

    • Foshizzel says:

Hmmmmm well the reception for this new Aquarion has been weak since it lacks the talent from both seasons, but the only persuading I can do is give it two more episodes to see if it can return to the old ways! As in goofy and crazy or is the LOLi enough? At least there is one and shes a pilot?

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

As in Fudou Gen/Zen. It does have Kotomine Kirei/Chihaya Souzou already so… As I would sometime say, LOLis(SHOutas) solve problems most of the time but not all of the time.

I agree and loved the Evol OVA, as Skylion said previously, it was awesome fanservice.

As for Logos, I’m undecided. I’m not really buying the whole “word” concept, but for a first episode, it wasn’t nonredeemable either. But really, the MC’s hair and character design is ugly. No two ways about it.

I think I’ll give this a couple of more episodes to see how it pans out.

And agree Fosh, no AKINO makes me sad.

    • skylion says:

Yeah, the Kanji stuff is waaaaaay out there. Not that any incarnation of Aquarion is so close to home, right? But this is a strange strange power. So much that it almost trips my BS meter. But then, whenever people say “Words have power!” I’m usually the one to “does a hammer laying on the ground have any power? Nope, you have to use it…for my dad, he can build a house, for me, I can crush my thumb….”.

      • akagami says:

Well, I can sort of stretch my mind to understand this premise of words coming to life. But the word “twist” causing untold manners of destruction? Sorry, that’s a bit too far-fetched for even me to accept (and I’m pretty accepting of a lot of ridiculous premises).

        • skylion says:

I found it very far fetched as well, but they make it work…I’m able to accept it as much as I am transforming and combining mech at any rate…
