Kekkai Sensen – 05

 SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY

spring15-samsPro tip: if you are going to see an outdoor movie in Central Park you NEED to bring folding chairs.  I don’t care if it hasn’t rained in a month and you scoped the spot out to make sure no ones dog left a a present for you.  DO NOT just sit down.  I don’t care if that means you have to carry 5 cumbersome folding chairs on the E train after you’ve been drinking for the past 5 hours hour and a half, don’t do it.

What I like about You

Real talk: why aren’t there more cyclops in anime?

Its time once again to be introduced to some wild and crazy characters!  This time is a double feature of Aligura (she’s a lover not a fighter) and the duo of Hummer and Brody (fighter, not a lover).  One party is a love stricken cyclops, the other is Venom from Spider-man a Bishonen with a mashed up demon for blood.  You’d think this was a match made in heaven.  But apparently this relationship fell apart with the mashing part.  And they looked so beautiful together too.

Kekkai Sensen2015-05-06-23h45m56s599

Best origin story ever!

I really enjoyed both (all three?) of these new characters.  Brody and Hummer have a nice relationship of symbiote blood and guts so to speak, while Aligura is kinda adorable in her craziness.  But ever since the Great Truck-a-Saurous Riots of 1986 (just trust me on this one) New York has had a bit of trouble with monster trucks.  So it falls to Libra to save the day, with every character getting another chance to look super cool with there special traits.  It is less of a fight scene, and more of a puzzle solving done by way of super powers.  Oh yeah, did I mention Leo got kidnapped again?  He did.

Kekkai Sensen2015-05-06-23h47m09s798

Seriously, this is NOT VENOM.  Why would you even ask?

Love Walked In

Lover boy here

After being kidnapped by a psycho stalker cyclops, Leo decides he needs to push his relationship with White to the next level.  I’d say that in the rankings of first date tactics, outdoor movies is a fairly reliable choice.  Often times you don’t have to worry about paying for tickets, and if it gets cold you have an excuse to cuddle up together.  Nice plan Leo.  I’d say these two are quite adorable together.  One has the eyes of some nameless Cthulhu esque deity, the other has a brother that may be plotting the destruction of humanity or something.  It’s a match made in heaven.  Spoil this show for me and I will annihilate your comments.

First Date…

I really don’t mind this guy

D’ahh.  Pay attention to the strategic flower shot

header-spring15-sam

As of right now, I really don’t know what this show could be planning for the long game.  I know there are vampires, people who fight vampires, people with secret plans that may or may not be vampires, and Leo.  Quite frankly, if I just got 12 episodes of these “meet cool people do cool things in demonic NYC” I’d still love this show to death.  So to leave off, I have to ask an important question.  Who wants to see anime Dannie DeVito?

A little tip: Venom is the black symbiote in the Spider-Man universe. The red one is his counterpart, Carnage.

    • skylion says:

…both of them got devolved to po-dunk’s anyway….

    • Samsura says:

It’s a size thing. Would you rather I compare him to Toxin?

      • BlackBriar says:

Hmm? I don’t follow on the size part. Please explain.

        • Samsura says:

Venom is a guy who gets really bulky when the creature sharing his body appears. Same with Brody and Hummer.

          • BlackBriar says:

Okay, I see. That’s true and I saw evidence of that in “The Spectacular Spider-Man”. Eddie Brock’s size doubled when he became Venom.

    • IreneSharda says:

So, I wasn’t the only one that immediately thought Carnage when I saw that thing. LOL

And Hunter even looks a little bit like Kasady. I was seriously looking at that thing when they first revealed it and was thinking that Marvel/Disney was about to sue somebody. 😛

  2. skylion says:

I dunno, White seems to have her own agenda, and Leo is the designated Fall/Fail Guy for everything, or nearly everything. So she may be leading him on…But if not, then it is very adorable.

Aligura is sooooo freaking Boss! Psychotic, unlicensed to drive a Monster-Monster truck (and you know she doesn’t have insurance on that thing, what company would under-right that risk!?), and a cyclopic cuddle-bunny. And she will Stand By Her Man. Plus Satomi Koorogi’s voice sounds like Crayon-shin went nuts!

So, I wonder if that miso from Hummer’s container will come back and haunt anyone?

Still. I love Chex Mix. But that really is all this show is going on about. After a spell, the Worcestershire taste gets to you and the only thing they offer you to wash it down is BLOOD! At least offer me the Sweet and Salty version!

    • JPNIgor says:

Even if it’s on her own agenda, it’s still adorable.

What risk? It’s a moster truck that wrecks stuff and doesn’t get wrecked. Unless Blood Hammer is in the picture. Anyway, in a messed up world like that, Aligura’s monster truck must be loved by the insurance companies.

    • Samsura says:

I’m getting a lot of mixed messages here. What on earth does chex mix have to do with Worcestershire sauce?

  3. Rathje says:

I’m sooo looking forward to Leo getting kidnapped by Aligura again and getting more love advice from her on his relationship with White.

Every good romance needs a good-natured zany sidekick giving sage advice, right?

    • skylion says:

Wait….NO! Her sage advice is that she likes ketchup more than miso! That’s horrible! Or…in Hellsalem, it could be the best thing evar!

    • BlackBriar says:

I’m sooo looking forward to Leo getting kidnapped by Aligura again and getting more love advice from her on his relationship with White.

If that happens again, he may not survive the counseling to meet up with White again to put the advice to the test.

      • JPNIgor says:

Leo has plot armor, no worries.

        • BlackBriar says:

The thing about plot armor when it comes to characters like him: Because they’re not allowed to die, they’re forced to endure excruciating amounts of pain for an untold number of times for who knows how long. Compared to that, dying would seem like an act of mercy. 😛

          • Rathje says:

Yeah, well… Leo’s concept of torture isn’t exactly Tokyo Ghoul level, you know…

            • Mystic says:

Considering what Aligura did to Dog and Brody, it could have gone to that level of torture but thankfully didn’t 8D

            • BlackBriar says:

There’s no guarantee it wouldn’t get that far.

  4. TheVoid says:

You can’t really spoil anything abut White or her brother because they were created specifically for the anime.

I do like how Femt and White’s bro are just hanging out eating while all this is going on.

  5. zztop says:

Dog is a demeaning name for a character, IMO. Unless it was supposed to be Doug.

    • BlackBriar says:

Nope. According to MAL, that is the way his name is spelled out: Dog Hummer. Who in their right mind would name their child that?

      • JPNIgor says:

You wouldn’t believe the names people used to put in people here where I live. Stuff like name of acids, inappropriate words, or weird stuff like “cheap aeronaut” or “Agricultural Sugar-beet Sand”. Yep. Thank god it’s been prohibited for a while now.

        • BlackBriar says:

Kanye West naming his child “North” comes to mind. Imagine when some stranger suddenly calls the child out by full name. The sheer embarrassment of knowing that is what you’re called. In essence, that’s a life-long curse. *facepalms*

  6. BlackBriar says:

Cyclops are such a rarity in anime that if one shows up, the sight of it can throw you off. That said, in spite of her cute appearance, I was a little creeped out finding out what kind of species Aligura was.

This is about the second or third time Leo nearly gets killed during Libra’s attempt to rescue him and deal with the enemy. The poor guy needs some kind of compensation for pain and suffering.

Leo and White are hitting it off nicely. Can’t wait to see what happens when her brother gets further involved in the developments.

  7. BlackBriar says:

Since Blood Blockade Battlefront (Kekkai Sensen) is part of the topic, here’s an ANN article that just came in: After 1 Month, Anime Fans Vote on Which Spring Shows They’re Still Watching

I didn’t realize Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works (4th place) and Seraph of the End (2nd place) were doing so well. They’re both within the Top 5 for the overall vote. Kekkai Sensen is lower than expected, though (8th place). For those who are watching it, SNAFU S2 is holding the crown. Rejoice!

    • JPNIgor says:

What surprised me was Shokugeki no Souma being so low. Maybe the plot advancing so slowly scared them away.

SNAFU on the otherside is flowing magnificently. No wonder it’s so high.

      • BlackBriar says:

I can’t speak for SNAFU since I’m not watching it after dropping the first season. If Shokugeki no Soma is looking slow in pacing, there’s a good reason behind it. The show is a 24 episode series. So time is being taken to spread out.

        • JPNIgor says:

Yeah, I know, and I don’t care for slow pacing at all, but there’s people who can’t take it, and ends up dropping it. Also, I can’t get enough of that ending.

          • BlackBriar says:

I don’t mind slow pacing. If the story appeals to me and looks promising, I’m willing to wait. Those who just up and drop it because they overanalyze and criticize every little detail and can’t handle slow pacing are simply impatient. Their choice and loss, if you ask me.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

In a preseason preview comment, someone said something succinct about Shokugei no Souma: Food Pr0n.

I thought they meant literally food pr0n. Not food + Pr0n.

    • El Goopo says:

What surprised me is that the women have such better taste than the men. But I guess they’re “males” (read: boys) so it’s not that surprising. If they find Fate so much more entertaining than the other shows on their list, they MUST be kids.

      • BlackBriar says:

I’d be very careful how I phrase that if I were you. There are more than a handful of people around here who find Fate more entertaining than others shows. Including the one who runs this site.

        • JPNIgor says:

At least UBW, I can say with certainty that is one of the most entertaining stuff this season, and that’s coming from someone who couldn’t stand to watch Deen’s FSN because of the messy start. Only the animation quality and the unlimited budget they seem to be working here is enough to make me stay.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Too late. The Nasupatrol has spotted and flagged this subthread! Shiki Kyokai should be here soon!

Au contraire, to enjoy Fate/Stay Maid(whatever) you actually have to go through the Tomes of Nasu.

To quote: “Some mongrels dare to look up? They shall soon know their place!” *cue golden portals opening*

  8. IreneSharda says:

A great episode though not my favorite. Brody and Hummer were a cool combination and it was interesting that they had him/them locked up in order to protect them from the lover girl from Hell! LOL

Aligura takes “yandere” to an entirely new level. She was truly creeping me the heck out when she went about what she did to the two of them. I’m glad that they only did a tiny flashback and the ketchup metaphor because if they had shown the whole thing I would be getting “Shiki” flashbacks. 🙁

However, I am glad that this spurred Leo to take some steps forward with White, though she seems to have had an emotional reaction to watching “Twins”. Is it because she might possible have a twin who’s behavior has been weighing on her emotionally?

We do see her similar companion the King of Despair having dinner and observing Leo from a distance. He seems pretty interested in him.

Oh ho! So Toshio experimenting on his risen wife for information with all kinds of heinous means did leave a scar on you. I thought so…

    • skylion says:

Koogori’s performance matched with the visuals were so effective. Easily the best part of the episode.

  9. Rathje says:

By the way… [too lazy to look it up alert]

Is the voice actress for Aligura the same as Tetra on Log Horizon?

    • BlackBriar says:

No, they don’t share the same seiyuu. Aligura is voiced by Satomi Koorogi. Aside from Fairy Tail’s Frosch, she doesn’t have any anime roles I personally recognize.

      • JPNIgor says:

Wow, she did very well for someone who’s hardly made any major roles up until now. I only recognize her role as the main couple’s daughter in Clannad: After Story and the Togepi seiyuu hahaha

        • Di Gi Kazune says:

          *Snarf*

        • BlackBriar says:

She really doesn’t have any other roles I know of. Plus, I’ve never seen Clannad.

          • IreneSharda says:

From some of the sites I’ve read, Koorogi is actually a pretty legendary seiyuu, but she’s mostly been in a lot of older classic stuff that much of today’s anime fans know nothing about or don’t remember. When I looked at her credits, I can see why. Gundam Turn-A, Gundam Victory, Planetes, FMA (2003), Scrapped Princess? A lot of older but classic material.

            • BlackBriar says:

That makes sense since I didn’t start watching anime online until a few months before I began commenting on Metanorn. So those anime titles absolutely don’t ring any bells. And the FMA I saw was FMA: Brotherhood. Backtracking, my first comment was on November 1st, 2010. That was quite a while ago.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

        Snarf.

  10. skylion says:

OH, BTW, I’ve been meaning to ask. Are the staff paying any attention to detail with the NYC backgrounds?

    • IreneSharda says:

It’s hard to tell since this world is after it’s been merged with the alternate world. However, from the parts that I have seen in comparison to the two times I’ve been to NYC, they are pretty faithful. The subway looks similar,Penn Station too, and they are mixing a bunch of brands together to avoid copyrights, but I like how they’ve portrayed this future NYC.
