Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders S2: 06-09

This is actually really embarrassing that I have to compile 4 episodes (a month’s worth!) into one post. I was swamped with grad school interviews, work, and a vacation that kept me away from the computer for over a week. Sorry that real life got in the way of cartoons!

She’ll suffocate you, and you will die a happy man

I love how some of the “fights” this season aren’t actual physical brawls, but just a series of mind games. The Oingo and Boingo episode was much the same. The two brothers tried to use their Stands to assassinate the Joestar group, but they were so hapless that they barely even got to throw a punch. However, Mariah is competent enough to actually mess with our lovely heroes (instead of the other way around).

She deftly tricks Joseph and Avdol into touching a socket and then waits for them to kill themselves by getting crushed/impaled/whatever by metal objects. It’s an incredibly embarrassing way to kill someone. First of all, the fact you could have avoided it all by not touching a goddamned power outlet is maddening. Secondly, I don’t think “death by escalator” is anything you could read about in a eulogy without snickering. Thirdly, Mariah just lounges about and watches her victims flail around juuuust out of reach. It’s the perfect recipe for an entertaining showdown.

To be honest, most of this fight is just Joseph and Avdol making fools of themselves. It’s 90% comedic relief and that sort of thing oddly seems to be working really well for JoJo this season. I’m digging it. Watching Avdol accidentally mime an entire gay porno in front of a crowd of curious children was pure gold. I used to feel pretty meh about his character, but he really redeemed himself after his “revival.” Remember when Avdol was just that super serious guy who hardly ever said anything other than narration? Yeah, well now he’s the guy who dove face first into Joseph’s crotch while having a meltdown. I never thought I’d want an episode focused on Avdol but here we are…

The fight ends in a single moment of car sandwiching, nicely showing us that Mariah is actually super weak when you find a way to touch her. Her abilities are nicely balanced so that her magnetism is a really potent ability, but it has just enough limitations to make it possible to kill her. I think pretty much every Awful Thing that could happen due to attracting metal objects happened to the poor guys. They really milked her power for what it was worth, but it never got stale. Mariah was a cool Stand user and I’m going to miss having someone easy on the eyes instead of guys like the monstrosity we had in the next battle…

“Hey Polnareff, have you seen Polnareff around?”

Are they even trying to make this show about Jotaro anymore? Seriously, in all the 4 episodes I missed, he hasn’t played an important role in any of them. I barely even remember he’s supposed to be here. Isn’t it kind of sad that the main character is constantly outshone by his DAD? Garo kind of does the same, choosing to focus on the cool dad instead of his whiny, angst-ridden son. Maybe this is a new movement? Maybe we’ll soon be free of the teenage MC and every show – harem, action, comedy, you name it – will feature dads. Moe oyaji is the new hip thing!

Anyways, this time it’s Polnareff who eclipses Jotaro instead of his dad. Because yes, the whole cast takes turns stealing the spotlight from Jotaro. I don’t mind because Polnareff is great and his ridiculous reactions are perfect for a silly set-up like this. Jotaro is the most boring baby ever because he’s such a prude. That’s why Jotaro only chimes in at the end – because it would be incredibly boring to watch a poker-faced toddler deal with the situation rationally. Plus, he’s so strong that the episode would have ended immediately. It’s much better having when you have a guy who’s already like a kid go through a wild adventure to try and use his puny Stand to beat an adult.

Once again, we have a really bonkers Stand ability matched with an equally bonkers Stand user. Combine the two and…you’re in for a wild ride. I didn’t even know what to feel during this battle. I felt both creeped out and amused when watching Polnareff enjoy his bath time. I was cringe-laughing. However, it did play out nicely in the end with Polnareff being a real man and parting ways from the love of his life. Poor guy just can’t get a break!

I had so much trouble choosing screencaps because everything was just so ridiculous. From the pedo faces to Polnareff doing everything naked to the chibi Chariot trying his best to win. It was a bit hard to watch at times because of how gosh darned creepy it was, but I can’t deny that it was entertaining when it needed to be. It could have been whittled down to just one episode potentially, but that’s just my anxiousness to get to Dio talking. They’re so close! We can’t stop now!

I was wondering why your presence around here began to wane. Well, the reason behind it is more than understandable and you’re back now. I guess this means we’ll be seeing you helm the next Yuri Kuma post? You’re kind of overdue for broadcasting yuri induced folly and weirdness. 😉

Not in the slightest, as I’m a bigger fan of that JoJo than this current one. Now, if only he was still portrayed by Sugita, it would be perfect.

I’m trying to suss out the thematic approach to this whole affair, as these events have been more akin to a curb-stomp than previous battles. Is Dio trying to make them overconfident?

I’m actually a fan of all these older dudes outshining the kids. It’s a nice change of pace and Joseph has a much more interesting personality than Jotaro.

These guys are weak, but high in number. I guess Dio’s hoping to win by whittling them down slowly?

First off, Joseph is his GRANDPA, not Jotaro’s father, who we never even meet. Also, I want to warn everyone that the next stand is the manliest man in all of anime. He makes Raoh look like Vanilla Ice (I mean the Jojo Vanilla ice, just Google it)

    • Overcooled says:

Ahhhhh that’s a big mistake on my part, sorry. Jotaro just looks so old…

I’m so happy there’s a JoJo character named Vanilla Ice

      • bobob101 says:

Understandable, but don’t forget, he IS always wearing his High School Uniform, hair merging hat, chains and all.

The lewd episode was one of the funniest to date.

    OK…Lets See now

Joseph and Avdol are “Fagging” Around and that old lady show up and…Whoa…i mean man, i feel a little sorry to her…

and as for Polnareff…Well, He get lucky for -ahem- getting a lady, thanks for being a kid (due to the effects of sethan stand), so that Silver Knight need a “waifu” huh…sad to tell this but his fate will be sealed when…well, i can’t tell for now.

    • Overcooled says:

So much happened…I couldn’t even begin to recap it all.

Noooo Polnareff better get a happy ending!!!
