First Impression – Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders S2

50% flamboyant poses, 50% actual fighting

I’m ORAcooled, and today we’ll be talking about some JOJO! If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already seen the past seasons so this isn’t so much of a first impression as it is a “continuing impression.” Part 1 of Stardust Crusaders was just getting to Dio, so part 2 should be all about the big guy! …Mostly! …We’re still not there yet!…Give it some time.

I’m more afraid of the creepyass dog than the water Stand, actually

Has JoJo gone to the dogs? I’ve seen tons of people post pictures of Iggy on anitwitter, but I assumed he was nothing but another villain of the week. As stated in the episode itself, it’s not that weird for a Stand User to be an animal since we already dealt with an Orangutan. But it’s definitely weird to have a dog (who can’t even speak) as a permanent addition to the team. I’m not so sure I like him yet because it’s hard to care much about such an ugly dog with an even uglier personality. I could do without a slobbering, farting little gremlin with eyes that could give me nightmares for days on end. I don’t even know if I can call this abomination a dog.

But hey, at least this show has guts! I like that JoJo is never afraid to be as kooky as possible by creating a large variety of characters and special Stand abilities. Having a blind villain use sound to localize their opponent, for example, is an interesting way to turn someone’s weakness into a strength. It’s not as crazy as some of the Stands we’ve seen before, but it’s not boring at least. Likewise, it’s a good, simple base concept so they can  throw in a dog and show us what he can do. Unfortunately, they decided to make him the most vulgar thing possible so there’s no chance of him being the cute mascot of the group. Maybe if he wasn’t such a jerk to my favourite JoJo character I’d be more forgiving.

Anyways, for better or for worse, we’re stuck with him. He may be gross, but there’s no doubt that his Stand will be incredibly useful. When else would you ask for the help of a sand-element Stand user aside from in the middle of a desert? Furthermore, his canine senses are better than everyone in the group (minus maybe Jotaro’s vision). He’s being played off as a slacker for now, but I have no doubt that he’s going to be the one to kill The Fool and earn everyone’s respect. Immediately after he’s going to rip out Polnareff’s hair though. I can see it already.

Final Thoughts

We’re off to a decent start! While it looks like the baddy-of-the-week thing won’t be ending anytime soon (why are there 9 more bad guys? Oh God why???), at least we’re slightly closer to Dio. I also quite enjoyed seeing everyone get wrecked by a blob of water. It’s funny when a bunch of burly, grown-ass men are screaming and clinging to the top of a car for their dear lives instead of fighting. I just hope this second season doesn’t repeat the same mistakes as the fist half of Stardust Crusaders.

I loved the Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency because things were always changing things and it was hard to know what to expect. I also loved the constant rivalry against some crazy powerful villains as an overarching storyline. My interest has admittedly dropped off a bit for Stardust Crusaders because it’s so stretched out. The villain-of-the-week formula isn’t all that exciting either because we all know it’s just going to end with Jotaro punching another dude into oblivion no matter what their power is. In fact, I just don’t like Jotaro that much. I’m actually much more fond of Polnareff and Kakyoin…and it feels like they’ve had way more development than JoJo (who is supposed to be the main character).

So Stardust Crusaders is a bit of an odd beast in the whole animated JoJo franchise. That being said, I still enjoyed it and I look forward to see what crazy powers come next. Plus, this is the season where we’ll finally see Dio! I’ve always loved the idea of Dio as a constant thorn in JoJo’s side no matter how many times he dies. I’m looking forward to when they finally, finally get to fight each other. FINALLY.

Stardust crusaders (and every other JoJo after it) is basically what happens if the characters in a horror movie could fight back. Imagine if when dealing with chucky you had the chance to take him on with a katana. And of course, the fabulous bizarreness that no one other than the immortal Hirohiko Araki can produce.

    • Overcooled says:

That’s true! It’s like a horror movie but way more fabulous.

Let me rephrase: JoJo is what happens when you put Fabio in a cheesy horror movie, give him the ghost of Bruce Lee, and say go get em.

Yeah, I’m still a bit ticked that they are going Chop the Next Bad Guy in the Face Next Week approach as well. Franchise if feeling a touch stale.

But as long as HP is getting his face and hair chewed off, things can’t be all bad….

I feel like a bunch of these fights could be completely excluded from the anime and I wouldn’t even notice. Ah well, I guess they’re keen on adapting everything – even if it is a bit repetitious.

Polnareff can never catch a break D:

Sounds good to me. Gotta love the healing power of buff men punching the hell out of monsters.

Ahhhh that’s going to take so long to get to Dio. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY?

I will say this. The upcoming fights against the Nine Egyptian Gods are some of the best with all of them pretty much being a step up from any prior to Egypt.

    Iggy will also surprise you.
