Fall Anime Catalogue 2014

Welcome to METANORN’s Fall Anime Catalogue of 2014!

Last updated on 27th September: for latest PV and seiyuu info.

The FATEFUL Fall is here. You know what I did there? Yep. And bring in some cold soon because damn it’s a sauna here! Living in South Asia pretty much means that equator keeps shining on your faces all the time. Anyways, besides shitty weather, Summer was not so bad. I passed onto the 20+ watch list again and damn, Haikyuu!! is ending this week and HunterxHunter too… Oh well, good thing is that interesting anime will always be there and on my top list without anyone’s doubt is FSN: UBW. I have been waiting so long for a proper adaptation so ufotable, go crazy. There’s also Psycho-Pass, Terra Formars, Parasyte, Mushishi and Log Horizon to keep me happy. As well, some promising series like Shigatsu wa kimi no uso, Yowapedal, Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis and Wolf Girl & Black Prince so let’s hope for a happening end of the year!
SCREW YOU SUMMER! I hate you and your hot weather, but at least the anime was good because it brought the end of Captain Earth finally and the halfway point of Aldnoah.Zero. So as we say goodbye to all the summer anime, sadly we have to move on to the fall; however I am very excited for it because not only do I have one Gundam series coming out I get two!? Whoa that is a huge surprise for me! Normally us Gundam fans are lucky to get just one new Gundam series a year! Besides Gundam I also plan on taking a look at Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo! Yeah that looks uh different…beside the giant robots I am happy to see a lot of returning anime with Log Horizon, Chiaka, WIXOSS, Psycho-Pass and Yowamushi Pedal! That and of course tons of new anime that I am looking forward too like Nanatsu no Taizai, Kiseijuu, Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso and finally Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru just to name a few! Then again I always attempt to watch at least the first episode of every new series.
The fall anime season means two things: we’re getting a lot of great new anime, and we’re switching over from complaining about the heat to complaining about the cold. But really, you’re here to read about the former rather than the latter. And while I found the summer to be full of great shows, the fall season is nothing to sneeze at. I’m pretty hyped about more Mushishi and Psycho-Pass, and I think some non-sequels may end up winning me over as well. I hope you find at least one show you like while going through our guide, because we’ve got it all!
So another 3 months have passed, meaning we get to look forward to a whole new set of shows. Summer 2014 was certainly an interesting season, with some truly exceptional shows, including a hugely improved sequel in Space Dandy S2 and a refreshingly off-the-wall take on a familiar premise in Sabagebu. But it also had its share of disappointments that started out with promise but quickly fell into trainwreck category, in Terror in Resonance and Aldnoah.Zero. Here’s hoping we’ll get more of the former kind and less of the latter. As always, it’s impossible to tell beforehand what will be worth watching, but a few old franchises should prove at least interesting. There’s Ufotable’s wholly unnecessary Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works remake and the not only unnecessary but unwelcome sequel to Psycho-Pass. We’ll see if they can win over this skeptic. But I think the show of the season will be another existing franchise, Sword Art Online S2, which has continued its godawful showing from the end of season 1 to the 1st half of season 2. As long as it continues its spectacular descent – and I see no reason it won’t – it should be the show that most consistently provides entertainment week to week.
Fall already? I swear, we just started summer… But hey, there seem to be a lot of sequels to some pretty great shows, so that’s exciting (Mushishi and Log Horizon being examples of that). Plus there seems to be a decent amount of shoujo shows (er, at least 2 + that ONA), a few shounen, the usual harem ones, and a surprising amount of angst-ridden anime (assuming Psycho-Pass and WIXOSS continue like their first seasons), so really, there’s something for everyone.
The lull of summer season is finally over. It’s time for another jam-packed fall! This year’s is most notable for two things. There’s the return of F/SN, headed by the reputable Ufotable. You can bet we’ll be covering that one. And there’s also the long-awaited continuation of Log Horizon, which will be going head-to-head with SAO directly this time around. So hold on to your panties, and let the flame wars begin!
To me, the End of Summer means that it’s finally getting back to good weather! And it also means that we’ve got new anime series coming up, which is usually a good thing. As usual, I’m not anticipating much from the series in the new season, but there are a couple that doing this preview has gotten me interested in.  Hopefully they’ll be as good as they seem, and all the ones that don’t seem as good will be better!
I’m not alone in wishing the crappy, hot summer weather goodbye (though to be fair mine was rather mild). Nor am I alone in the anticipation of Fall anime goodies. Over the years I’ve always allowed myself to expect the unexpected, and discover something new that only this medium is capable of; quirky ideas like Twintails, Inou-battle, and adorable Slice o’ Rom or Com in Sora no Method. With that in mind, we do have some very hot returning properties to look forward to in WIXOSS, Chaika, and Log Horizon, and a massive amount of expectation for the Fate/Stay Night venture. I’ll be seeing you here and thereabout, thanks for dropping in and commenting.

I hope you enjoy our comprehensive listing of Fall anime 2014, meticulously organized under categories for your viewing pleasure. Kudos to Ness, who helped with the post graphics and draft transfer, while Fosh, Suma, Kara and the  Team Meta members for information gathering and comments. Our previews take weeks to accumulate as we not only tackle the TV series but Shorts/ONA/OVA/SP/Movies as well. So, happy reading and without any further ado:

*crawls out from under the rock*

Been pretty busy, so my backlog has grown pretty large >.<
I was doing well holding it at a constant level, and then life events (TM) happened. Oh wells, now I just need to marathon more ^_^

And then I found out that the new season is upon us! Oh mah gawd, I need a slow time device (or one of those time capsules in DBZ).

As for this season (fangirl squee). 27 shows at last count, and even if I drop the on-the-fence ones, that's still 20+. So much to do, yet so little time. And DA2 is coming out soon!!!

    The force is strong category
    ——————————–

Denki-gai no Honya-san – The premise reminds me of Working! and ServantxService, both shows I enjoyed very much. Don’t you wish you worked with colorful people like this?

Amagi Brilliant Park – I’m not sure what this is but- IS THAT FUMOFUU!?!?!?!!!! MUST WATCH!

Log Horizon 2 – OMG YES OMG YES OMG YES. I had forgotten S2 was coming. #TeamAkatsuki

Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete – School setting with romance? With some supernatural? Sign me up!

Selector Spread WIXOSS – Batteru! Batteru! A fun first season, so I’ll be along for ride 2.

Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works – I strongly enjoyed the original FSN (which introduced me to the Fate universe), so it goes without saying that I’ll be watching this. The recent Fate series were done very well, so I’m looking forward to this.

Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo – Sunrise and mecha~ Mecha and Sunrise~ You just can’t go wrong with this combo as a mecha fan. Nosiree.

Hitsugi no Chaika: Avenging Battle – S1 was good, S2 should be good as well. It’d be a disservice to S1 if I didn’t watch S2. That’s how these things work.

PSYCHO-PASS 2 – If you haven’t watched S1, please go watch it now. Although I don’t know if it’s a series I would re-watch, so I haven’t seen the re-run. But S2 should be good and fun futuristic cop action.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso Musical drama! Yay! I’ve discovered classical music and symphonies recently, and it is really a wonderful thing.

Mushishi Zoku Shou 2nd Season – Along with Aria, one of those highly slow-paced yet-very-enjoyable anime series out there. If you haven’t seen this yet, you don’t know what you’re missing!

    Step right up here category
    ——————————–

Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken – I’m not sure about this one, while it sounds interesting it seems like it would be similar to Genshiken, which I could never get into. Actually I’m not sure if I have ever even see an episode, but the whole premise and art doesn’t seem appealing. Although I have heard that it is very funny. Hm hm.

Gundam Reconguista in G – As a Seed fan, I’m not sure how I feel about this old school art style. I never got into any Gundam earlier than Wing. But I’m definitely willing to give it another chance, after 00 (… no comment).

Madan no Ou to Vanadis – Something about fantasy settings always interests me. After Escaflowne, I don’t think I’ve ever skipped a medieval fantasy anime without first trying it out. Tomatsu Haruka!

World Trigger – Sci-fi action, usually worth a go for simple fun enjoyment, if nothing else. Though monsters appearing out of portals from alternate dimensions reminds me of ZX Ignition (which turned out to be very enjoyable, as unlikely as I had initially though going in).

Nanatsu no Taizai – I’m on the fence with this one. While I started out liking the manga at the beginning (a lighter version of Ubel Blatt), it’s starting to turn into typical shounen affair and I’m losing some of my interest here. So we’ll have to see how well adapted this is, I guess, and whether it can hold my attention.

Grisaia no Kajitsu – A school romance series? Normally this would be a shoe-in, but the art style isn’t really catching my eye and the staff behind it don’t really make this stand out. It’s based on a VN, so it could go either way. For some reason I can only thing of Shuffle as a VN turned anime, although I’m sure there are more since then. Just can’t think of any atm. Shuffle was enjoyable to watch at the time, though I don’t think I would watch it again now.

Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji – Shoujo romance, can’t hurt to see where this goes. I highly doubt it’ll fill the hole Ao Haru Ride will leave though.

Sora no Method – Reading the premise doesn’t make he highly excited, although the creator did make sola, which I enjoyed. Trial this is! (at least 1 or 2).

Shingeki no Bahamut GENESIS – This action packed fantasy sounds highly interesting, but… there’s CGI. Hopefully the CGI isn’t too distracting.

Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de – magic girl harem, without the magic costumes! The first thing I would do if I gained magical powers? So many things I would want to do…

Akatsuki no Yona – A princess on the run? Sounds good. I hope it turns out to be something as entertaining as Scrapped Princess.

Trinity Seven – Comedy, with fantasy elements and romance tossed in? Seriously almost every show this season is screaming watch me. So much magic in the air. I want to become a mage.

Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai – ehh, it doesn’t sound *that* appealing, but it’s comedy in a school setting and romance. Really, it’s like my krytonite. I can’t help it.

SHIROBAKO – While my experience with anime about making manga/anime has been poor, P.A. Works is involved. Worth a spin, at the very least.

Donten ni Warau – Not much to go on here, but it has bishounen brothers. It can’t hurt to see where this goes.

Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru – Cute girls doing cute things. I do so enjoy these slice-of-life shows.

Hey, long time, no comment! Welcome back!

Your backlog continues to grow? I can’t even begin to imagine how much you’re hurting from that. It can’t be good.

27 shows on your Fall season list. That’s pretty heavy. Good luck sorting out good from bad. Me? I count 21 for this season + 3 ongoing from Summer giving me a total of 24 series. That’s a bit less than what I usually find myself with. Though something is telling me a few are going to get dropped easily.

I’m totally with you on a few of your choices. Log Horizon 2, Selector Spread WIXOSS, Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works, Hitsugi no Chaika: Avenging Battle, PSYCHO-PASS 2 and Mushishi Zoku Shou 2nd Season. They can’t start soon enough.

Can you believe it’s going to be a year since the first season of Log Horizon began? It’s going to be 2 years since Psycho-Pass S1. Oh, how time flies!

      • akagami says:

I’m down to about 50GB left on my drive… I was managing to hold the line at 100GB for a while until about a month ago, and then all hell broke loose. I can see that easily getting decimated once the fall season starts, but thankfully I’ve been able to find time to start watching again ^_^.

I didn’t see any blood-sucking protagonists this upcoming season. Are you going into withdrawal?

I know, it seems so long on Log Horizon! I’m thinking I’m going to watch a few episodes to give me a refresher on where it ended off, I’m a bit fuzzy on the specifics.

        • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, that’s not hard to imagine going down if you’re downloading episodes of the animes you’re watching. That count will get reduced to half or more in no time. I have an external hard drive and it has a number of things on it but every season bites about 21+ GB of memory. I’m down to 487 GB right now.

I didn’t see any blood-sucking protagonists this upcoming season. Are you going into withdrawal?

*gasp!* Oh, don’t worry about me. Believe it or not, I’m holding out strong. Though it was excruciatingly painful. And what was once withdrawal has been replaced by anxiety because another vampire manga was green-lit for an adaptation. Its name is “Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End)”. Now I’m just begging for a release date.

          • akagami says:

So when the going gets tough, do you bite yourself? Wait, does that work? I always wondered if you could suck your own blood.

            • BlackBriar says:

While it’s making me laugh somewhat, I’m not sure by what you mean. 😉

I’ll look forward to seeing you there!

    • akagami says:

Hello there! I see you’ve joined the team, congrats! Wait what, BB did as well? Now that I look closely, you’re both Meta Team now ^_^

      • BlackBriar says:

No, no. That’s just a ranking because of the comment count. I’m not part of the team. Although it’s part of my intention but I need to sort out some personal matters first..

  3. skylion says:

New PV for Sora no Method!

    • Kyokai says:

See, posting the actual youtube link works better 😉

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Damnit! You made me waste post #1000 on this comment. 😛

Posting the actual link is so that all the LOLicons flock to it like bees to sweet honey? 😛

Congrats to irene on the same milestone!

        • Irenesharda says:

Yay! Congrats to us both. Though I can’t actually remember what my 1000th comment was. 😛

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

And getting it eaten by spammy too 😛

        • BlackBriar says:

By the way, welcome to the 1000 comment club! Here’s a complimentary club member cigar! 😀

          • Di Gi Kazune says:

            *puff*puff*

            Thanks Lord 7k… 😀

          • Irenesharda says:

            Yay!

            • BlackBriar says:

I wouldn’t forget about you and your milestone, either. Though a cigar isn’t suitable for a lady. Any suggestions for a prize? 😉

            • Irenesharda says:

Hmm, I’ll take a German chocolate cupcake with a sparkler on top! 😀

            • BlackBriar says:

Done! It will be on its way as soon as possible. Also, since you’re a regular on Metanorn, I think you’re overdue for a title. You should ask Kyokai about one. One that you’re proud to call yourself.

            • Kyokai says:

Actually, I’ll give a special title to Irene as she deserved it!

Let me know what you want in two words. :3

            • Irenesharda says:

              Hmmm, a title…

Well, I love literature and the common themes and motifs they give and how they flow through movies, television, and anime. They influence my quotes and my comment reviews. So, after some deliberation, I will go with: “Athenaeum Châtelaine”. I am the mistress and key holder of the sanctuary of knowledge. *Dun,dun, dun!* 😀

            • Irenesharda says:

Also, merci beaucoup, Mistress Kyokai. It’s been really cool here at Metanorn!

            • BlackBriar says:

Quite the unique title you picked there. Now I’m curious as to what kind of literature interests you the most.

            • Kyokai says:

And the deed is done. Enjoy the new title, Irene, and you are most welcome! :3

        • Kyokai says:

I warned before, Spamzill is active again. T.T

Trying to reign it in but yeah, bear with me on this one till 10th October for a permanent solution.

      • skylion says:

        …my way was more challenging…

      • JPNIgor says:

Wow, you guys kept talking so much about milestones that I just noticed that I’m in top 20 \o/ How come?

        • BlackBriar says:

Because you were unconsciously increasing your total the more you commented. Every single one is taken into account. Speaking of which, congratulations on making the top 20. You’ve made your own milestone! How does it feel?

  4. Kyokai says:

    World Trigger PV is out:

    • JPNIgor says:

The animation seems kind of weird when the characters talk and I wish they would keep the character design closer to the manga. Some characters looks really… er… round? It’s kind of weird.

      • Kyokai says:

Gives me the same vibe as what I saw in the Terraformars beginning few frames. I guess, it’s Toei Production so too early to say anything. Let’s see how it looks once it airs.

  5. Kyokai says:

    Garo, extended PV:

    • Irenesharda says:

Great animation and it still looks very good. I love a good fantasy epic.

However, is it wrong that while watching this, all I was thinking about was the guy’s poor horse? I mean, how much armor and mail does that thing need? How does it move? :/

      • Kyokai says:

The action is very well animated and from the old codgers who have seen the previous offerings, they are all about the action scenes. The CG is well done so let’s see how that goes. The armour you see is basically armour equip (something similar to onichan’s armour in Akame ga Kill or djinn equip from Magi). I guess, it doesn’t take the toll on the horse rather than the user but I guess, we’ll soon find out.

  6. Kyokai says:

Hey guys, as I know some of you watch this already so thought to put this here as it’s airing in Fall too! 😉

  7. Di Gi Kazune says:

    (I hope the embedding works…)

    “I am extra sexy~”

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Aaaaand it horribly fails… just according to keikaku XD

      • Kyokai says:

Fixed! No addition of codes required. Just paste the URL at the end of the comment rather than beginning and the video should render fine here.

PS: Shounen is already VERY yorokobe’d! :3

        • Di Gi Kazune says:

“Rejoice viewers! For I am just a simple ramen chef!”

Wait… Oops… That’s the wrong Nasuverse. I still cannot wait until they animate 3rei and the ramen chef appears.

        • Di Gi Kazune says:

Forgot: “I am also a very sexy neko-otoko and a very good cook~ Lolis also like me.”

  8. Kyokai says:

Fate/stay night: UBW’s first two episodes would be 1 hour long. Oh the joy and squeals of Type-Moon fandom!

    • BlackBriar says:

The anime hasn’t even started and already the fans are getting obscenely spoiled. It’s rare that any series gets an hour long opening. Fate/Zero had one as well.

      • Kyokai says:

You understand the size of fandom by such distinct character PVs and fan bait news. Fate/Zero had one episode, Fate/stay night: UBW will have two. TM fans are really lucky this year indeed.

        • BlackBriar says:

TM fans are really lucky this year indeed.

I’ll say. If Prisma Illya 2wei that aired this Summer is taken into account, and should the other half air Winter 2015 with Fate/Stay Night already confirmed as a two cour starting this Fall, Type-Moon fans will be getting a whole year of Fate related material. I’m still a fledgling but the die-hards are such lucky dogs.

          • Kyokai says:

Let’s not forget that the year began with Kara no Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin, so three releases in a year?! This has to be the biggest yet. :3

            • BlackBriar says:

Even better! An ANN ad showing the same video states Hiroshi Kamiya will be joining the cast as Shinji Matō. As if this anime wasn’t overhyped already.

            • Kyokai says:

Actually, they are not changing the VA cast from the VN at all and Hiroshi Kamiya did voice Shinji originally. These were his early days when he was not insanely famous and mostly voiced negative roles. This is definitely not a highlight of his career but TM-tards get a kick out of him voicing Sakura’s bro and a bad friend to Shiro.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Rejoice viewers! For the Holy Grail shall grant your wishes! >:D (in the smexy priestly voice)

Oh… Even if the world turns into hell?

        Next we need Fate/Apocrypha anime.

  9. Soliia says:

I’ve been a terrible anime fan this year. I pretty much got burnt out on it this spring, plus I haven’t had time anyway because a lot of real life things and changes happened. However, I’m going to try again this season.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso looks beautiful and it’s about music and romance, two things I love.

Sora no Method is visually pleasing, but mostly I’m watching it because of the writer for Kanon.

I’ve been playing Grisaia no Kajitsu. I haven’t gotten far yet, but I hear such good things about the VN. I’m definitely going to watch it.

I haven’t watched or played anything from the Fate series, but I’ve heard that this should be a good place to get into it.

Gugure! Kokkuri-san looks fucking adorable, so it’s totes getting a watch from me.

I also thought that the first season of Psycho-Pass wrapped up nicely. Still looking forward to this season though.

I’ve heard good things about World Trigger, so I’ll check it out.

I loooove my shoujo, so Akatsuki no Yona is a definite watch for me.

Aaaand I’m gonna check out Parasyte.

I really, really hope that my burnout is over and that I actually have time to watch things this season.

    • Kyokai says:

Good luck with catching up again! RL can be hard but we gotta get moving or the backlog comes and bites us in the ass!

You have a nice list going and hope you have fun watching them! We’ll be covering the first impressions of all, so if in doubt, keep dropping by. 🙂

  10. Di Gi Kazune says:

    And so as I pray…

    UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS!

And immediately Shiro dies in episode 1. 😀

In other news… shit really did happen in the 3 years after the end of Season 3… Korra is indeed a tragic Avatar. Lost her bending, lost her avatar, lost her life.

    • Kyokai says:

GAAAAARcher! I seriously hnng’d. Expect the coverage soon. 😉

Did she really lost her bending? I have a feeling that she is just being hard on herself but dunno. We’ll see.

  11. Di Gi Kazune says:

    Hmmm… Maybe I was unclear:
    Season 1 – Lost Bending
    Season 2 – Lost Avatar
    Season 3 – Lost Life.

While she got all back in the end, those are kinda hard things to take considering that she supposed to be the person that keeps balance. For someone who was so chipper and perky at the start of the series, she has been getting the short end of the stick…

Archer’s first task in the 5th Seihai Sensou: Unlimited Broom Works!

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Maybe I also don’t know how to reply properly. -__-

      • Kyokai says:

Hahaa, no worries. I guess, with this being the last season, Korra will come a full circle. They are talking about balance but it seems everything has gone out of whack in another way. Let’s see how the production tackles things.
