Aldnoah Zero 08 - Slaine in Hand

A Slaine in the hand… how much is it worth?

This week, Jrow & Skylion talk about Slaine getting tortured, everybody aboard the Deucalion getting familiar with Asseylum and Cruhteo’s admiration toward Slaine’s handling of finding the princess.

I’m on board with skylion. My guess is Slaine himself is the key to the Aldnoah drive, so he can be used to change the “ownership” of the entire system. That’s really the only reason I can think of as to why Saazbaum so desperately needs him alive.

    • skylion says:

I don’t know how true that is, but damn it does sound really cool. It’s not like the Martian Knights are %100 loyal to each other…stands to reason this pretenders would have on guy to jockey against the feudal lord.

    • JPNIgor says:

My guess would be that Slaine knows too much and he needs to be shut down. The reason he needs to be alive is to know where the princess is. Still, Slaine being the key to the Aldnoah Drive would be awesome, though unlikely, since it’s an ancient tecnology.

      • skylion says:

I could go along with that, “knows where the princess is” isn’t exactly true. He discovered her the two time by complete chance.

That informs my opinion, along with the mention of his father doing secret science stuff, say that Saaz-dude wants him as an in to wrest that tech away….

Whoaaa I really like that idea of Slain having the Aldnoah power! I could totally see that being a thing in this series much like Eren’s dad off AoT and who knows maybe Slain’s dad told him the secret behind where the power originally comes from, but I could see people complaining about that being super cheesy! I mean why else would Saazbaum want to keep Slain alive? Surely not because he likes him or is it to keep the truth on the Aldnoah power a secret from Mars and Earth? That works in my mind.

Good stuff this week! My only complaint story wise was HOW the hell did the Mars forces capture Slain after Inaho took him out last week? I guess we just have to assume they located his ship afterwards, but really it doesn’t matter how because it probably would have been a two second clip LOL

    • Highway says:

Yeah, that was totally incongruous: Last episode he was flying away, this episode he’s being tortured. At first I thought it was a flashback to when he crashed in the palace or whatever and Asseyleum ‘saved’ him and he was getting tortured because of that.

    • skylion says:

You can see that point were Saazbaum got nervous, when it went from just observation to action. He wanted the torture to end, and just have Slaine kept; perhaps with plans to move him later. But no, kid had to open his mouth.

    • Namika says:

Maybe he wants to keep Slaine alive so that he can find out where the princess is?

      • BlackBriar says:

That and wanting to know about what technology Slaine’s father created or has expertise on. That’d be killing two birds with one stone.

    • Irenesharda says:

I too think Slaine has the key to Aldnoah and doesn’t know it. Either from what his dad did, or from being unknowingly a member of the royal family.

As for how Mars forces located Slaine? Inaho simply took Slaine’s carrier out of submission causing him to crash and then left him. Martian forces had been following Slaine anyway or Saazbaum’s orders so it makes sense.

  3. BlackBriar says:

Yeesh, no matter what the era, people always seem to favor the primitive, unspeakable means of getting information out of their captives.

“Forgive me, Slaine”. Yeah, after all he’s put him through and now he’s gone as far as addressing him by first name. Calling that development “convenient” is an understatement. To set things on even ground, Cruhteo should receive all the blows landed on the poor boy.

Knowing that Urobuchi is leading the script, I wouldn’t get my hopes up of Cruhteo surviving. Still, the guy wasn’t much of a douche to warrant getting taken out, especially when there’s a possibility of usefulness now that the truth’s out. If he is in fact dead, then Earth just lost a valuable would-be ally in an instant. His loyalty to Asseylum stood firm and he acknowledged Slaine for his bravery and dedication. Kudos that he figured out all the boy’s intentions on his own right at that moment. I would’ve loved to see Cruhteo burn Saazbaum’s conniving ass for high treason.

Calm is just following his natural male instinct… at the cost of his pride and reputation. What does it take to turn a guy’s head? Just one hot girl.

    • skylion says:

…like Jrow said, and said well, no body, no death. But if he were to die in true Butcher style, it would further the plot and make Slaine cry bunches.

    • Irenesharda says:

I don’t know why, I shouldn’t, but I do find bishi torture scenes, kinda hot. I know that’s my inner fujoshi side talking, but I can’t help it! 😛

My bet is one Cruhteo being alive, there are just to many things left undone with that character, and they have mentioned his mech “Tharsis” twice and we have yet to see it. I can see him coming back as a rival for Saazbaum to fight. (Possibly with a mask? LOL)

You’re really scaring me there. *shivers* Didn’t peg for the sadistic type at all.

        • Irenesharda says:

Not really into the sadistic thing either. It’s only the really light cases (not too violent and no blood or anything). And it only applies to yaoi situations too, no hentai, and definitely no yuri. I am a mild fujoshi, not as bad as anaaga, but I do like it sometimes. 🙂

          • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, anaaga is in a whole different league. Clearly we’re opposites here. Yuri is fine by me. 😉

  4. Namika says:

for some reason, I’m not feeling this show that much. I really like it, but I can’t really feel it. It has no atmosphere :\ Other than that, I’m actively rooting for Slaine, and was terribly pissed at the end, after getting swiped up on the waves of hope. GOD, how can everything be so bad? So much shot doesn’t even happen in RL 😀 all at once, at least 😀

    • BlackBriar says:

This is Urobuchi we’re talking about. Always expect things to go from bad to worse when he’s lurking about. Slaine just has rotten luck. That’s all.

  5. JPNIgor says:

So… Awesome… I can’t believe Saazbaum really did that. Just when we thought we had some martian allies, he goes and BOOOOM. yep. Humans are fucked again.

But damn, seeing Slaine being tortured at the same time the princess enjoys the earth was something really sad to watch. I really wished that moment that they had some kind of special unexplainable connection. And to think Inaho was the one who caused such grief to Slaine… Bad boy, Inaho…

    • skylion says:

Ah, yes, but that real division in the Martian ranks is what we’ve been kinda waiting for…

      • JPNIgor says:

Is there really going to be a division? The only affected there is Count Cruhteo and his tripulation. If there is any possibility Count Cruhteo is alive, there might be some kind of division, but again, Saazbaum would probably manipulate the king.

    • BlackBriar says:

But damn, seeing Slaine being tortured at the same time the princess enjoys the earth was something really sad to watch.

That was a glorious show of contrast we were treated to.

    • Namika says:

Yeah, this show did it again. Remember the end of the first episode, where the kids wished for world peace on falling bombs? It’s just like that. Flat out sarcasm.

  7. zztop says:

Slaine’s quite a popular subject for Aldnoah fanart on Pixiv, followed by Inaho and the princess.

  8. Irenesharda says:

Oh wow, things sure did escalate between “then and now”.

First off, poor Slaine. Being Slaine sure is suffering. Gets taken down by Inaho, only to be captured and tortured, and nearly beat to death. And now to be captured by his mortal enemy! But, I’ll get to that later.

Let’s look at Asseylum, whose way of saying hello to people seems to be tossing them on their back. She has revealed herself and commanded the Aldnoah drive to activate, and interestingly enough, has charmed all the Terrans on board, even the angry Calm, who seems to flip on a dime and a pretty face? So much for revenge…

Speaking of vengeance, Rayet should really get off her high horse, especially as she is herself a Martian and is partially responsible for this mess. Stop biting off everybody else’s heads.

Anyway, Inaho and Asseylum talk. He tells her about the soldier he met. She thinks it might be Slaine, but isn’t sure. Instead, she playfully observes birds for the first time, all the while Slaine himself is getting the crap beaten out of him by Cruhteo, with Saazbaum looking on. At first, Slaine stays resolutely untalkative, but eventually he questions Cruhteo’s loyalty, eventually gives enough clues that Cruhteo is able to figure out the whole truth. Unfortunately, Saazbaum has figured out that Cruhteo knows the truth and decided to strike first, attacking Cruhteo’s castle and seemingly killing the blond count. He then captures the unconscious Slaine, before going back to his own castle in orbit. His red, black, and gold mech is awesome to look at, and can actually fly!

We also learn that the Martians do indeed know about the Deucalion and that it fell to earth 15 years ago. I’m guessing the humans placed the Aldnoah drive (those glowing orbs) from out of the mech, onto the ship, and of course, never could get it to run without someone who had the power to activate it.

This was a wild turn of events, and I have a feeling that we haven’t seen the last of Cruhteo. And what’s going to happen to Slaine now that he’s in Saazbaum’s hands? (Let me guess…something to do with suffering?)

(LOL, and yes, I’ve seen the next episode at this point. But this is only for this episode so…:D )
