Captain Earth – 02-04

The best girl finally makes her appearance!

Fosh & I are kind of back to our mini-talk roots with this series, talking mecha as we previously had with Eureka Seven AO, Robotics;Notes and Gargantia. Captain Earth has been one of my faves of the season, so should be fun to chat with Fosh and you all about! We talk the poster characters not named Daichi, SaltyDog and why tan girls are best girls.

————————————————

FK YA Captain Earth yooooooooo!! I love this series a lot and I know some will probably have issues with the pacing and info dumps happening every other episode but hey this is a twenty-six episode anime so we have to wait or do we really have to wait? Because after episode four we already know most of the plot about the aliens and why they want to invade earth.

Extra fun with Mecha

Yay! It’s the Akari show, staring Magical Girl Akari! Bellybutton METZOFORTE!

Wow, this is a clusterthing of politics and weird hormones. I can’t quite get a bead on the secret society business, so they better make the characters something worthwhile.

KillTGang? Kiltgang? If it’s the second, their mechs should be Mad Scotsmen with transforming bagpipes. The first? I guess they have power uniforms first cour, and go naked the second…

  2. Highway says:

If I have to keep seeing ‘Kiltgang’ I think I’m gonna hulk out. Especially when the show puts ‘Kil-T-Gang’ up on the damn screen.

The show’s alright. It feels a little too ripped off from other shows, like Star Driver and Robotics;Notes. Teppei and Hana need more personality, the space villains are pretty good, and the Salty Dog guy is such a cartoonish bad guy that it’s just laughable.

    • Wanderer says:

A comment from another blog about the name of the villainous pair:

“kiltgang” is a term to indicate a boy secretly going to meet a girl at night for example by entering her room from the window (and possibly having sex with her). In other words: they need to feed on the humans’ libido, and honestly, they know that humans want it too, deep down.

So just like how they’re using libido (sex-drive) to power their mechs, the name of the villains is yet another double-entendre.

      • BlackBriar says:

Oh, that’s something new… and kinky. Here I thought the method of powering mechs by memories in Valvrave was already out there. Complete memory loss by consumption ultimately leads to the pilot’s death. So what’s going to happen here if their libido as a source is extinguished?

        • skylion says:

Call the To-LOVE-Ru Harem! There is enough UST there to fuel fleets of giant robots across multiple franchises.

          • BlackBriar says:

With Momo involved, failure will not be an option.

        • Highway says:

At least it’s not as stupid as the other anime this season powering mechs with libido…

          • skylion says:

…I was trying to avoid that…

            • BlackBriar says:

Stupidity of that caliber isn’t going to go unnoticed.

          • BlackBriar says:

Kenzen Robo Daimidaler? Bleh!! I dropped that like a hot potato in a couple of minutes of the first episode. There’s that other anime with similar elements, Fuuun Ishin Dai Shougun. However, the lead must be a virgin to operate his mech. I’m waiting for it to be completed before saying anything concrete. My reason for this decision? The story was slow at the start but had some sexy looking women.

            • thorgriim says:

I was ready to droop Daimidaler after i seen the penings with front tails…

PLEASE HELP, Make fosh stop making me watch it!….

            • skylion says:

I can’t stop watching it. Curse you Daimidalar!

Akari caught the boomerang! Is this OTPing?

      • Highway says:

Hopefully she didn’t catch that, but picked it up. Catching a boomerang is a great way to get a broken hand… or other parts. 🙂

        • skylion says:

Magicall Girl Akari can catch anything…with bellybutton forte.

    • Jrow says:

Tan girls are best girls, and lolz at the comment under the Moco pic xD

In the future where there mecha and super advance AI, the Salty Dog (pfffttt) guy communicate with his superior by a paper cup phone XD Granted its a future paper cup but still.

If you ask me which Bones anime I prefer, I would choose Hitsugi no Chaika over Captain Earth since CE is kinda confusing and a bit hard to follow with all the stuff happenings and terms throwing around. Still a good entertainment though.

And apparently there a manga that sheds more info on the setting/terms such as the Kiltgang human form is actually designer baby and their true form is the mechas. There also a bit abt Hana but I think that a bit spoilery.

    • Jrow says:

I kinda feel the same as you about CE & Chaika. If forced to watch only one Bones show, I’d take Chaika. I mentioned Ao a number of times on the talk, and that show got too confusing for its own good; I hope CE doesn’t reach that extreme, but it wouldn’t be too surprising to me if it did. And while I credit Daichi as a good lead, I’m liking Toru more.

  5. BlackBriar says:

Hahaha, it feels odd hearing Fosh lead and being the one introducing Jrow in a podcast.

Akari is the Kona Furugoori of Captain Earth. Loved her the moment she got enough screen time to be explored. Super smart, unparalleled hacking skills, eccentric and upbeat. What’s missing is her having sayings like “What kind of eroge is that?” and “Duhuhu~”.

Correction: The hacking girl from Valvrave’s name is Akira Renbokouji. Akari/Akira. Frightening how different yet similar a name can be simply by switching a few letters.

What makes Captain Earth better as a Bones mecha series is that unlike Eureka Seven AO, which was alright in its own way, there’s no huge, overwhelming time travel plot where there’s trouble making heads or tails of anything. Pieces had to be put together but some are so out there they feel unrelated. For the lead characters, Daichi and Ao are alike in various ways.

The troubling part is the robot’s assembly time. As mentioned, it’s too dragged out. If I were one of the Kill-T Gang and realized that, I would’ve taken out the remaining assembly docks that haven’t been reached so the Earth Engine would be incomplete, take it out with ease make my descent to the planet unopposed. Daichi would maybe be able to breathe a little easier if the docks had outside defense systems dealing with the enemy while the prepping’s being done.

    • Highway says:

You’re missing the main reason for having that long robot assembly sequence: To waste time in the episode with stuff that’s already animated and, therefore, cheap.

      • BlackBriar says:

And it’ being done right in front of our faces. The studio’s pretty bold.

    • Jrow says:

Akira, ok. Also, the other Akari I was thinking of is from Chaika.

      • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, there’s her as well. In my opinion, Coffin Princess is unfairly getting a bad reputation mostly for Chaika’s skewered speech. I don’t find anything wrong with it as long as what she’s saying can be understood.

  6. BlackBriar says:

While there’s talk of mecha going on, there’s that last anime entry for the season: M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane. If anyone’s seen at least one of the two episodes s far, what are your thoughts on it?

    • Highway says:

There’s a FI post coming for it fairly soon, I think.

    • d-LaN says:

Intriguing themes/plot to me, but the animation/drawings looks a bit QUALITY and blurry. I also haven’t really warmed to majority of the characters except the pilot girl and maybe the creepy girl. Nice mecha designs though.
