Nobunaga the Fool – 02

Nobu the FOOL (5)

The fool is in da house

It seems like Nobunaga the fool is either hit or miss with a lot of fans out there but are you still watching or have you already given up all hope? I guess I will have to stick around for the third episode to see if the actual plot kicks in.

New character appearances

da fool

Even Jeanne has problems keeping track of all these characters.

Last week we were introduced to a lot of wacky characters and this time we finally meet more starting with a random loli named Nell, a Shouta named BianchiAlexander the great and Gaius Julius Caesar who are both considered Knights of the Round Table?! I know that is CRAZY! So yeah if that hurts your brain at all just sit back and think of Nobunaga the fool as an alternate dimension; however I think most of us just turn our brains off while watching right? The last new face we meet was Ichihime at the end and I guess she is just the princess aka Oda Nobunaga’s sister? So can anyone out there answer why the Da Vinci talked about the Lovers card to Jeanne as she watched Nobunaga talk to Ichihime? Is there some incest vibes going on or are they just really close siblings? Also what about Himiko what is her role in all of this? Is she just a fortune teller character or is she another possible love interest for Nobunaga? I swear there are a lot of possible ships found in this series but at the same time I don’t really care who gets with Nobunaga in the future because I feel this anime will fail hard in the romance department or do you think it has a chance to explore such things? With all these new characters appearing I guess we will meet Shingen Takeda next week? I don’t know much about him outside other Sengoku themed anime like Sengoku Basara, Sengoku Otome and Sengoku Collection, but one thing is certain he does have his own giant mecha and yes I know technically the “mechs” are just giant suits of armor.

The official website says other Round Table members include:
-Hannibal Barca (gender bent – the silver haired woman)
-Charlemagne (male – platinum blonde/silver haired, no mask)
-Caesare Borgia (orange hair with feather)
-Niccolo Machiavelli (gender bent – the blue-purple haired woman, not officially one of the Round Table, there as Caesare Borgia’s assistant)
    -Chandra Gupta (turban guy)
-Alexander the Great (big blonde guy)

Brutus, Caesar and Magellan you know already. Ichihime, Nell and Bianchi are fictional.

    • Foshizzel says:

Awesome list thanks for pointing them out and yeah I figured Ichihime, Nell and Bianchi are fake characters just created for the anime.

Jeanne should just use her Noble Phantasm to get rid of all the suffering. La Pucelle!

This has been a pretty slow mover for a Kawamori show; I had expected much more of his style of depth by now.

Yeah, we got even more historical mish-mash. It’s on a roll.

Machiavelli assisting a Borgia? Oh, I hope this is sneaky history, allowing M a stab at revenge. Funny that guy, he has a rep for The Prince, saying he must have been a pretty evil guy to write it. But most of his work before and after were like, “All Hail Republics, no more Tyrants”, leading some historians to think he wrote The Prince under duress.

    • Foshizzel says:

True compared to something like Aquarion this is slower in over the top-ness

      MORE CHARACTERS WOOOOOOOOOOO!!

      LOL

I’m definitely more (completely?) on the ‘miss’ side of this one. Lame parade of historical names, just throw another one in the fire! And then pronouncing Caesar as “kaiser”… ow. It’s not Wilhelm we’re talking about.

It’s not just that part that doesn’t work for me. “Zaaful” (yeah yeah, I know, but if he’s gonna keep saying it that way, that’s the name) is a stupid name for a mech. Jeanne is so far just scenery, and doesn’t seem to have any hope of getting better, and I really don’t like any of the characters, at all, in any way.

I have to agree on your first points, but I will probably end up sticking with it.

It needed to come out of the gate much much stronger. It hasn’t been that fun watching the stage hands maneuver the set pieces around, despite the wacky historical blender. And just showing the opposition sit around a table talking “stuff” is not what it should be about. These are “breather” episodes at the beginning.

      • zztop says:

The table talk, to me, set 2 important points:
1)The Western Star’s possible ecological problems (bad harvests due to ley lines)

2)A possible plan to colonise the Eastern Star due to above problems.

Add that with ep 1’s mention of the Western Empire controlling its dragon.

I am getting the impression you hate this series Highway.

  5. anaaga says:

I’m surprised that Himiko is someone who didn’t leave a mark in my history book.

I always cover my ears every time Nobunaga says “Zafuul” because that’s just embarrassing as hell

    • zztop says:

Himiko is a semi-legendary historical figure from Japan’s Yayoi period(300BC -300AD) as opposed to the very real Sengoku period Nobunaga and gang.

I’ll elaborate more when her character is properly introduced. 🙂

    • BlackBriar says:

I always cover my ears every time Nobunaga says “Zafuul” because that’s just embarrassing as hell

True. I’ve only heard three times and it already grates on my ears. For an impressive mech, you’d think it would be fitted with a better, more inspiring name.

      • anaaga says:

The pronunciation really bothers me. And disappoints me in a way. I expected the seiyu to practice in the pronunciation. One of the anime I’m blogging has a character from America, and it can be seen that the seiyu did practice for the English conversation. I expected the same from Nobunaga’s seiyu, but oh well

    • Foshizzel says:

Zafuuuuuuuuuuuul! I need to make that a ringtone.

  6. zztop says:

In tarot, The Lovers usually represent dual partnerships (mostly romantic),but it can also mean establishing personal beliefs and determining one’s values.

Jeanne and Nobunaga discussed their beliefs(her fate vs his determinism), not to mention the partnership between Nobu and his sister, and a (possible?) one between Nobu and Jeanne.

  7. HannoX says:

This show is really into historical name-dropping, isn’t it? But that’s not enough to make an interesting show. For one thing, you’ve got to do something with those characters and so far most of them are just mentioned.

I don’t know if I’ll continue this show past the third episode or not. I don’t like that so far Jeanne has just been eye candy. While she may have only rarely engaged personally in combat there can be do doubt that she was a charismatic leader who was able to inspire others. It’s high time to see her do something along those lines.

So far Nobunagun is the better Nobunaga show this season.

    • Foshizzel says:

Well I am just taking it as them introducing them for now until they are needed? That and were on just on the second episode so we can’t expect all these characters to launch an all out assault against Nobunaga…

Welcome to female characters living in an mecha-ish anime they are always sexualized for the males to stare at! Hell even when the main cast is all female like in Rinne no Lagrange or Muv Luv? Can you name a mecha anime where the girls are not wearing super tight flight suits? I guess Gundam comes to mind but still.

      I can agree there.

  8. BlackBriar says:

More historical names show up. Even Gaius Julius Caesar. Gotta wonder if Nero Caesar will eventually come along. This show is one big historical melting pot with mecha thrown in for extra measure.

For someone who shirks his clans customs to the point of being labeled, this Nobunaga sure has a big ego. The things he has in mind, he better hope his rear is able to cash the checks his mouth is haphazardly writing.

Yuki Kaji is at his best playing perverts. His character’s nickname suits him because, honestly, to me, the does look like a monkey. Let’s hope he doesn’t lose arm. And I’m glad Jeanne punched him out. He was going out of bounds. Also, it’s apparent he doesn’t meet people with blonde hair very often if he’s asking if her hair is a wig.

    • Highway says:

Well, there aren’t many kinpatsu bishoujo in Japan now. There probably weren’t any (or effectively none) prior to ships arriving from the west, and not very many by the time of the sengokujidai.

    • zztop says:

For someone who shirks his clans customs to the point of being labeled, this Nobunaga sure has a big ego.

I think the writers are just playing around with historical descriptions of Nobunaga’s behaviour. The real one was labeled ‘the Fool’ due to his eccentric(for the times) behaviour and disregard for traditional customs in his youth.

Hideyoshi’s character’s nickname suits him because, honestly, to me, he does look like a monkey.

The real Hideyoshi did have a monkey-like face per historical descriptions. So we get monkey Hideyoshi.

  9. AllenAndArth says:

Nobunaga is a character that just made me his fan… seriously, he’s too cool! by the way he should be with jeanne or is it Ranmaru now?
him just throwing Jeanne aside gave a “you’re in the way, get out” feeling
    and
the mecha battles still put the mecha like something alien in the ambient…in fact the mecha animation is putting then that way…Hideyoshi sure seems a monkey…in various aspects…
ichihime is pretty cute…not like jeanne, but close… could it be nobunaga’s going to have ichihime and get jeanne as a lover?! that would be awesome

    • Foshizzel says:

So in short you are saying Jeanne is the best character ever? Right? Good <3

      • AllenAndArth says:

no no…No female character can get close to THE Lacus Clyne… she is the best character ever right up there with Alucard from Hellsing and Chiffon Fairchild
        and
But Jeanne is going up!at least for now
