A bodyguard love story featuring Sonohara and Yura? I can ship it~

After the great premiere episode of Stella C3, I liked it so much that I just had to jump into Hoshi’s posts about the show. The first episode had great action, and lots of fun with Yura and Rento. So what happens when we get to see Sonora added?

Ah, another week and another episode of airsoft gun battles and pretty high school girls~ Anyway, it seems that after some playful battles among the club members, we’re finally going to see how these girls handle themselves with other teams. Will our kick-ass girls disappoint, or will they shine in battle as they always do? First, let’s see how the newly introduced leader of the C3 club, Sonohara, deals with the rookie Yura.~

Sono-chan’s Perfect Touch

I thought Sono-chan in episode 2 showed a perfect touch for how to deal with Yura. She realized early on that Yura was interested, but that bugging her about joining wouldn’t really be the right way to go. So she laid back and took a nap, and ended up on Yura’s side, while the rest of the group got impatient. And it worked out, getting Yura more interested in the survival games, and in bonding with this group of girls.

Episode 3 was more of some perfect handling by Sono-chan, although it meant dressing Yura down for giving up. Her attitude of “It’s a game, enjoy it to the last” was exactly what Yura wasn’t doing, and what caused her to freeze up and run away, with the final humiliation for the team of giving up. And her stern words drove that home. Why give up? The only reason is because you’re scared, and that’s been Yura’s problem the whole time. So will she get over it?

Serious Tournament Action

The more these episodes progress, the more we get to see interesting mock battles that include more strategy, as well as more awesome moves from the girls. Episode 2’s battle was definitely a fun one to watch, and it managed to show the strengths and weakness of each member when in battle. Episode 3, however, finally showed us an actual tournament! I’ve been waiting to see how the girls fair against other clubs in a serious competing environment, and they definitely didn’t disappoint as they managed to totally kick ass while maintaining the fun they have when battling. The tournament also finally showed the cliched strong, rival girl club wither their ridiculously skilled leader who’s too serious about the battles and is obviously a direct rival of Sonohara. I’m looking forward to more of their battles against the Meisai Girls’ club, mainly to see how these girls compare to the C3 girls in terms of strategy and such (I also want a serious Yura comeback where she kicks some serious butt!).

Overall Thoughts

I like how they’ve shown 3 different types of Survival games so far, with Rambo, VIP, and CTF. There really is a fun variety of game types that can be played, and it really helps to keep the fighting fresh, even if the action quality has fallen off a little bit (not that it’s fair to expect them to keep that first episode quality the whole time). But I also like how they’re slowly working some personality in, and I just love the art style of the girls, particularly Rento. My favorite moment of the series so far (and it might stay in that spot, it was that good) was the look of pure joy that Rento had when Yura said she’d join the club. Moments like that really drive this show (as well as moments like “Yuranosuke-kun desu ne!”).

This week’s episode definitely made up for the staleness of episode 2, which wasn’t much other than more of Yura’s uncertainty, another mock battle, and the introduction of the cool Sonohara. The tournament was what really made episode 3 enjoyable, and it also became a sort of game-changer to the plot, especially concerning Yura. Through her mistakes and lucky moves in the tournament, as well as Sonohara’s tough speech to her after her forfeit, Yura learned that she can certainly be just as skilled as the others with not only more practice, but with more confidence in herself to believe that she can do it. It’s a lesson that doesn’t only effect her team, but  herself as well; and it seems she has learned that lesson through her haircut and sudden assertiveness about her name at the end of episode 3. Speaking of the team, it’s nice to see that the members don’t get angry or hurt when they lose or are out-smarted in battle, especially when they go against each other at school. They really praise each other on their tactics, stick together, and have fun. The club is so fun and relaxed it has me wishing I could be in a club like this as well. Anyway, after Yura’s declaration to take the club more seriously, I’m wondering how better she’ll fair in new battles. We’ll just have to see next week~

well at now thing are shoot it all in give now c3-bu team got long way to go.

especially later on road yea round 2 with rin indeed give all take no prisoner mood yea rematch bound to happen.

    • BlackBriar says:

An ending like this warrants a rematch. The pride on both sides has been hurt because of Yura being selfish and a green horn in the game.

      • Highway says:

Yeah, that they fought Maho, er, I mean, Kirihime, er, I mean, Rin so early in the series definitely means there will be a rematch, probably in a tournament with higher stakes (I kind of hope it’s not the ‘high school national championships’ or something, tho).

I’m really liking Stella C3 the more I watch it. The girls may have their BL undertones in Free! but here, the guys can get their yuri vibes…. at least until next season where there will be a sports anime featuring female pro wrestlers.

The one grabbing a third of the attention of the overall anime is Karila who could be a relative to the Prince of Persia with the way she was running on the walls. If one had to list the girls on who’s their favorite, she’d definitely be part of the top three.

Honestly, I was disappointed when Yura ruined the excitement of the entire match by giving up. It left a sour taste in the mouth and what made it worse was that she only thought of herself instead of thinking how her actions would affect the morale and image of her team. At least she has enough decency to realize her mistake and is willing to make up for it. On a side note, I’m not really sold on her new hairstyle. It makes her look awkward.

    • Highway says:

I think both of those last things were exactly the point. Yura was unable to think through her actions, and made the wrong choice. It certainly goes back to ‘the way she was before’, which we haven’t really seen, but keeps getting referred to. Will her new resolve and her new hairstyle help her keep her promise to herself to change?

I also wonder just how far she is from Tomoko, from WataMote. She’s certainly not quite to that level, but what if she hadn’t fallen in with a group? Could she have pulled out of her shell on her own, despite really wanting to?

      • BlackBriar says:

Though she’s self conscious, I feel she’s miles ahead of Tomoko.

        • BlackBriar says:

And at least she isn’t insanely delusional.

          • Highway says:

Well, Yura’s at least some amount of delusional, even having Honoka snap her out of it this last episode. But while it’s a difference in degree, I don’t know if it’s a difference in kind (others whose opinions of WataMote I’ve seen will disagree with me on this, I’d imagine). What would have happened if Tomoko had encountered someone so intent on including her in an activity? It was certainly luck on the part of Yura that Rento dropped by her room, but even if that hadn’t happened, could Yura have withstood the Sono-chan onslaught?

Contrast to Tomoko, who is in a place where noone talks to her, she goes home by herself, spends her time alone. What if someone had tried to draw her out (we don’t see if that happened, but I infer that it didn’t, and certainly not with the tenacity of Rento, Karila, and Sonora). Yura was given the help and the tools she could use to break the chain, and still is having a hard time with it. “Could Tomoko deal with the same help?” is what I’m wondering.

            • skylion says:

I think she could. We are made to be social creatures, dependent on many levels to complete each other. And Tomoko has the right ideas in mind, just talk to someone, but the nerves overcome her delivery, and that just compounds the problems.

In many ways I just want to leap into the TV screen and just wait for her to say something to me, just to help her out a bit. I don’t really get that with Yura. I just want to jump in and START SHOOTING!

    • d-LaN says:

I am looking forward to the Akuma no Riddle anime tht airs who knows when. It smells yurific.

      • BlackBriar says:

So far, all it says on MAL is that it airs somewhere in 2014 and given the time the information has been out, I speculate that it starts in Winter.

  3. d-LaN says:

    Spammy! My comments!

Everytime ppl bought up tht Gainax is dead, I will be using this and Dantalion no Shoka as counterargument.

Karila, Rento (the hentai girl right?) and Sonohara is best 3 girls to me.

Gimme back the old Yura hair 🙁 Or get a better haircut.

    Liking the new ED animation.

    • Highway says:

Rento’s definitely my favorite so far, and I love the way Nishizaki Rima is playing her in her first anime role. Sono-chan is second for me, although she’s almost TOO perfect.

    • BlackBriar says:

I agree, I don’t like Yura’s new hairstyle either. In a way, it makes her look mentally weaker than she was before.

  4. lvlln says:

This show has definitely been my surprise hit of the season. It has gotten better and better each episode, with progressively cooler and more involved matches. The gunplay, while over the top, was still so much better than what I’m used to seeing.

Gotta love Sonohara telling Yura off like that. Yeah, you go down fighting to the bitter end, surrender is an insult to your teammates, and that was what the captain had to teach the rookie. And how well did Yura take it? As a big fan of short hair on girls, I loved her new look. Gotta love her dedication. Reminded me of the time when David Beckham shaved his head to repent for getting into a conflict with the coach or something.

  5. skylion says:

Easily one of my top five shows this season.

  6. Overcooled says:

Oh my goodness, this show is really proving to be entertaining. Not only does it have great action, but the character interactions are so well done. I like how the girls tried to shrug off Yura’s surrender (because girls tend to coddle each other with sweet lies) but Sonora was having none of that.

I wonder if the OP and ED will update to show Yura’s adorable new haircut…
