Rika-“Welcome back! It’s time to get ultra happy! Whoops wrong anime…”

Welcome back friends to another hilarious episode review for Haganai and I hope you are enjoying the second season as much as me, but I think the first episode failed to impress even the diehard fans much like myself! That said, hopefully the second episode gives us something to have fun with right Kara?

Yeah, I’m not really feeling the craziness that the first season brought. The new nun character wasn’t all that spectacular this episode either… Luckily, we had Rika back to her old self and Sena driving herself into a corner, so there’s something. Maybe Haganai just needs some time to warm up before we go back into what it used to be.

Crazy perverted science time

Rika-“You want to do what to me Kodaka-senpai? Oh my…”                  Kodaka-“Wait! I didn’t even say that!”

haganai (8)

Rika-“ALL HAIL THE POWER OF MAGICAL GIRL SCIENCE!”

Scientist themed anime characters seem to be a huge hit for me lately and most of the readers know that Rika is one of my favorites from Haganai because she has a huge love for giant robots, but she also has a very over the top personality that ALWAYS dives into the perverted side of things. This week we learn even more about the perverted scientist as she reveals that she doesn’t even need glasses? Wait what you mean THEY WERE FAKE the entire time? Also I can’t forget to mention that Rika with her hair down was really fantastic even though she looked a lot like Yozora from season one. Besides that bit of random fun, Rika managed to get everyone to watch a BL themed anime called Homo Game? Those parts were so damn hilarious because of Sena and Yozora’s reactions. Part of me was waiting for Yukimura to start hitting on Kodaka for a similar relationship; however since Rika introduced this new world to Yozora she is going to push her to watch more BL anime? I can only say good luck with that new science experiment.

A Possible Love…  Line? Triangle? Square?

Rika teaches us the importance of a good BL story...

MAN SERVICE

I don’t know if this is just me seeing what I want to see, but it really does look like they’re hinting at Kodaka possibly maybe having more romantic involvement this season. Not just with Sena and Yozora, but they even threw Rika in there this episode. I would have never imagined that if she dropped the megane and ponytail that she would have been Kodaka’s type. Maybe if she dropped the dirty jokes and became a little more… subtle, she’s be a serious contender. Maybe something tragic will happen later to further this, but I quite like Rika’s character the way she is, so hopefully nothing happens. As for Sena… well, things are going on as usual. I think she’s just a bit too caught up in her rivalry with Yozora to seriously go after Kodaka. She may have a bit of a crush, but I don’t think she’s going to do anything about it soon. Now Yozora definitely seems like him too, but her case is that she’s a weird mix of forceful and shy. She’ll stumble around asking Kodaka to compare test answers with him, but if she’s not doing that, she’s demanding that everyone else (or normally Sena) do as she says. I still like Sena and Kodaka better as a couple, but I do have to admit that Yozora does have a charm to her. …Yeah, I wonder how this will progress over the season.

Fun with MEAT

haganai (10)

No one gets between Sena and her love for Kobato!

haganai (11)

Sena’s ass is such a camera hog.

haganai (12)

Maria-“I swear to god I will bite your boob next time!”

haganai (9)

I think that explains why she hasn’t been around lately…

End thoughts

There was not a whole lot to talk about this time since the first half focused more on Rika showing off that random BL anime movie to everyone? We did get a chance to meet Maria’s older sister who is absolutely insane just like her younger sister, but everything got kind of serious when she started to talk about Maria’s life before she became the club advisor? That was nice even though I know the core of Haganai is the comedy bits. Then again I don’t really mind when Haganai switches gears and goes for serious chatter instead of slapstick humor, but of course there are hardly any serious things to talk about besides possible romance between Kodaka and Yozora, unless Sena suddenly gets serious about hooking up with Kodaka? I suppose anything is possible at this point. I should mention that whenever I hear Rika aka Misato Fukuen get all perverted talk on us I can’t help but think about her voicing Cure Happy/Miyuki on Smile Precure and that cracks me up every time! So what did you like about the second episode?

So is Haganai going to turn into a fight between BL and GL? I can’t say that there was that much substance to the episode, but it seems like Haganai is planning to continue on with random club activities for now. I have no problems with that. Having Rika force a BL movie of everyone was was pretty funny. On to the more serious side of the episode (other then what I talked about above) I don’t really have much to say on Maria’s older sister either really other than she’s pretty well endowed for her age (though which anime character isn’t?) and she just seems like another background character there with no real plot relevance. She provided us with a sad story about Maria’s past, but I could really care less about Maria’s character and have a hard time picturing her as the lonely child genius when she has no common sense. Oh well, I guess on the plus side, she’s not just a comic relief character now and has a bit of backstory to her. So yeah, overall it was a pretty good mix of comedy and a bit of backstory. The mix of genres didn’t really seem strange, so good for Haganai.

Heh, I think the show’s getting into the parts I really like: possible romances with Yozora or Sena, and Rika and Yukimura there to muddy the waters. I have to say that Sena definitely seems to be losing some ground based on these first two episodes. Yozora seems to have a new attitude or at least a limit that she’s instituted about how far to push Sena, who then goes over the limit on her own.

And I concur that Rika’s new hairstyle is great.

    • BlackBriar says:

Let’s not forget that Kodaka and Yozora have the “childhood friend” card on their side which is a cheat if you’re expect a fair contest so it would be natural to see Yozora begin to gain the upper hand. It just makes a bigger challenge for Sena and more entertainment for the viewers.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yuri time is always a great time! I like the idea of Rika and Yukimura getting together a lot because he looked interested in that BL stuff…watch out Kodaka. So far you are right Sena isn’t winning any points in the possible GF department…

I love that gif man it looks like Rika is dancing xD

    • Karakuri says:

I’m glad it’s not just me seeing romance because I want to see it. Yozora does seem to have a bit of self consciousness now about how she’s pushing Sena around. Last season was relentless, this season she’s doing so much better. Though of course, that probably comes from hanging around her ‘not-friends’ at the club and realizing social limits.

  2. BlackBriar says:

I prefer Rika’s new look over her old one. She looks so cuter and had enough impact on Kodaka to reveal that he’s a closet pervert under that neutral appearance.

Honestly, the first half was hard to watch. I’m not into BL at all so I tried all of my might to ignore those bits but was surprised how easily Yozora was swayed.

Sena continues her perversion. Just where did she find a game with a girl that looks like Kobato? The lines she had to read out loud. Imagine what she would say if there was an unrated version. And I understand her confused face when Yozora actually backed down and apologized to her.

The highlight of the second half was Maria’s sister Kate. Now there’s a nun character I can tolerate even if she is in a way a tomboy. She and Maria seem to have a fierce sibling rivalry and I’ve never a female character that actually farts. Moreover, one that farts and isn’t even embarressed. Should I be fascinated or disturbed?

    • Highway says:

BB, I’m guessing that was an unrated version, based on what it said. The censoring was for *our* benefit, not Sena’s. It’s a REALLY raunchy line.

I thought the BL movie was fun, although I kept cracking up at the “Homo Gay Bu” (oh, you Japanese and your propensity for shortening loan words) (and I’m probably gonna lose some modern non-discriminatory guy points for thinking that). If you cut all the BL parts out of a BL movie, you might get something manly and inspiring like that. 🙂

    • Foshizzel says:

Yes! I love Rika’s new look and I laughed when she said her glasses were fake! GOOD JOB RIKA <3

Yozora is a tough girl to figure out most of the time she is trolling Sena or picking on Maria? This season she is blushing more and saying sorry?! GIRL WHAT IS UP? Just kidding! I know she is going for the romance option with Kodaka eventually...

When Sena was about to say her line and the eyecatch popped up WOW! that scene was really hilarious xD

Maria's sister was quite interesting...yeah...that fart scene LOLOLOL WUT THE HELL? Is this Gintama? lmao

      • Karakuri says:

The glasses actually a device used to hold her moe level back. With them on, she’s only at 50% of her real power. Kukukuku….

        • BlackBriar says:

There should be no reason to hold this moe perverted goddess’ power back. I say she should keep that look for a couple of days.

        • Foshizzel says:

Non glasses Rika is so AWESOME and MOE <3

  3. glothelegend says:

God I’m missing out on some decent shows this season it looks like…

Loved the first season….still gotta finish Chiyahafuru but I don’t know if I want to watch a WHOOOLELEEE nother season of that show, despite that it’s good.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yep! There are a lot of awesome shows and lots of fails.

I will get to Chiyahafufu s2 SOON! I have 5 episodes of season one to finish xD

      • Highway says:

Hah, I’m ahead of you, but starting to think I’ll have Chihaya burnout before finishing (I finished ep 22 yesterday). I don’t know how much I’m going to want to jump into the current season.

        • BlackBriar says:

Hahaha, I didn’t know this was a race. I’ll be the spectator and watch the racers trample over each other like a proud sadist. Dear god, Overcooled has rubbed off on me. LOL

        • Karakuri says:

Judging from your burnout from marathoning the first season, maybe you should take the second season in doses…? I don’t know as much as Kyo about Chihaya improving herself as a character, but the newer girl is certainly improving herself in my eyes, fast.

          • Highway says:

Maybe I should take a break on it, too. I just counted up current series I’m watching: 21, including 5 shorts.

            • BlackBriar says:

Wow, I’ve counted 21 shows as well (15 from this season, 6 from last) except adding the shorts but there’s one I’m sure I’m going to drop soon.

            • Highway says:

I’ve probably got close to the same list as you, but none I’m thinking of dropping, really.

Continuing: Sakurasou, SSY, P-Pass, Tempest, Little Busters, and R;N

Shorts: Yama no Susume, Senyuu, Ishida to Asakura, Ai Mai Mi, and Mangirl!

New: D.C. III, Haganai, Kotoura, Love Live, Maouyuu, Mondai-ji, OreShura, Sasami, Senran Kagura, Tamako, and Vividred

And now that I count, I’d forgotten Haganai in my count before, so 22.

            • Highway says:

I need to get better at counting, that’s 23…

Aren’t you guys glad I’m an engineer?

            • BlackBriar says:

              I’m impressed.

            • Highway says:

I dunno, the five short ones take less time combined than a single show, so I don’t know if it’s much different from the 19 or 17 I’ve had the last two seasons.

  4. Highway says:

I actually have to say that on reflection I’m enjoying that the show has turned it down from 11 to about an 8 or a 7 for the embarrassing escalations. It just suits me better, much like I thought Binbougami was better when it wasn’t all-out battle. I also like seeing blushing Yozora a lot more.

    • Yukarin_YY says:

I like Yozora’s personality in this season much better also. The shyness makes her much more appealing to me, and she’s much cuter :>

I feel that she’s also a bit less harsh on her jokes than last season, but well, it’s only two episodes in, but atleast she apologized in both episodes.

      • Karakuri says:

Yozora is definitely more likeable to me this season since she’s softened a bit. …Her hair is growing on me too. More than I thought it would.

  5. Yukarin_YY says:

ugh. Just finished watching this one, marathoning on weekends WHY
I’m too late to comment on some posts now haha oh well

I quite liked this episode, Rikka’s “image change” ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), the Homo Game lolwtf, and Maria’s older sister put together a pretty enjoyable episode.

humu indeed the romance is getting strong, Rikka has a pretty good chance now being exactly Kodaka’s type

Yes Meat is totally a perv =w=, and I loved how Yozora started talking to her “air friend” Tomo-chan at the end lol

    • Karakuri says:

I hope she keeps her image change. Not because I dislike the glasses and ponytail look, but it keeps the show interesting if she looks like Kodaka’s type. xD

It’s been a while since Tomo-chan made an appearance. I wonder if she’ll bring back the air guitar as well…

    • BlackBriar says:

Pfft. No matter. Go ahead and assault those posts with your comments showing what’s on your mind.

    • Foshizzel says:

I couldn’t stop laughing when Yozora started bringing up Tomo-chan! I was like oh were back to this now? LOL Good times.

      • BlackBriar says:

She regressed to her old self because of embarrassment. She’s such a tsundere.

  6. Highway says:

Like I said in my post on the subject, I am actually starting to feel a little sorry for Sena, because I’m starting to see a desperation in her that I really haven’t seen come to the front before. She wants so much to get Yozora’s and Kodaka’s approval, and she just doesn’t really know when to limit herself. She’s that person who hangs out in your group that just doesn’t quite know where to stop. And it’s a bit uncomfortable because a lot of the time *I’m* that guy. And it’s taken me years to realize it before I go too far.

Having more social interaction will help Sena, of the type she’s having with the club, but it takes practice to understand that, and she’s gotta keep making mistakes until she gets it.

    • Karakuri says:

Oh, yeah. Now that you point that out, she still is pretty socially awkward. I kind of forgot that in the fact that she’s extremely popular, but I guess she doesn’t have to try for anyone’s approval in that. Well, hopefully having not-friends will help her through that. I wonder if she’ll ever have a moment of realization, or if it will come naturally.

      • Highway says:

I think she’s had moments of realization, and a few of them have been when she covers it by running out of the club room yelling about Yozora. But the key is realizing that you’re about to be annoying, or that you’re about to go too far, and that’s what’s really the hard part.

Heh, ‘not-friends’. I still think that’s the biggest meta-joke of the whole series. I think it’s pretty obvious that Yozora does realize that they are at least what most people would call ‘friends’, given the way she was asking about kissing and staring down Kodaka as Rika explained it. I think she still uses the ‘practice for future friends’ thing to rope Kodaka into doing things, and also to galvanize her into doing something she would otherwise think is stupid or embarrassing. It’s actually a clever self-help trick, when I think about it.

  7. Tofu says:

AWWWWWW~ Don’t tease Kobato-chan like that with the Eroge~ LOLS! xP

    • Foshizzel says:

      But we need more Kabato!!

      • BlackBriar says:

Because if we don’t have her, we’ll lose a big part of what makes this show so good to watch.

        • Karakuri says:

Losing Kobato would be devastating, but hey, from the looks of it, she’s perfectly capable of being in an R-18 spinoff.

On second thought, Hanazawa voicing an R-18… the thought of that is more than a little disturbing to me. OTL

          • Tofu says:

LOLS Now you understand what I thought of when I made the connection with Kobato in an eroge with Hanakawa voicing her ><

But yes, we need more Kobato-chan! <3

            • Karakuri says:

Ahahaha….ha. I know she’d do well at the role, but there are just some things in life that I don’t need to hear.

            • Highway says:

As a romance guy, Maria and Kobato just get in the way of what I want to see. 🙂

            • Karakuri says:

Romance is important!!! However, where I could care less about Maria, Kobato is one of the few side characters I actually like.

            • Foshizzel says:

Maria x Kobato for best loli friendship <3

            • BlackBriar says:

@Fosh: No distorting the natural order. Let them stay rivals. It’s a lot more fun.

  8. skylion says:

Goodness, we all know what Sena things about when she ero-games, don’t we? So….where does one get a copy?

    • BlackBriar says:

An underground ero-game store because that particular one has a loli in it. One that strangely resembles the loli that she stalks. 🙂

      • skylion says:

She’s rich enough to afford the custom work such a game would take; and connected enough to get it made (like Rika would turn down the opportunity to make such a game….). We should all have friends like these…

        Thanks Haganai!
