12 Days of Anime #11 – Guilty Crown

Shu is not excited for Christmas because of reasons…

Welcome back readers! Fosh here to bring you day two of the exciting 12 days of Anime! So, what was a fun memory for me this year? Looking back I would have to say that Guilty Crown stood out for me even though it completely failed to blow us away. However, reviewing it was a different story for me!

Guilty pleasure

This is how Guilty Crown should have officially ended!

Ask just about any anime fan or aniblogger if they have ever heard of Guilty Crown and most of them will say yes, but it was so terrible! They will follow it up soon. For me personally going into this series I had high hopes for something amazing because the production crew had just about everything in the right spot from amazing visuals, killer soundtrack and a very interesting world to explore. I mean all of that had me seriously thinking what could possibly go wrong? I remember it was after the first few episodes that pushed us all to realize wow this series is absolutely horrible! You would ask, what made it so bad? Bad writing that’s what and honestly that reason alone is probably why Guilty Crown failed to keep us interested in the daily life of Mr. Ouma Shu or my personal favorite OH MA SHOE! If you followed my posts, you know I never got tired of this joke and even continued some to Accel World whenever I had the chance.

Cool characters

GUILTY.CROWN.full.1355137

A special cast of  interesting characters and Dan Eagleman!

While OH MA SHOE did his thing with Inori every week, there are a few side characters that stole the spotlight like the moe moe hacker girl Tsugumi and yes she might only exist to attract all the loli fans or moe lovers out there, but whenever she was in a scene you could always expect high doses of energy and excitement and of course lots of random fan service. Speaking of that subject, next up I would say Ayase because I share a lot in common with her but she was also another fun character who did not let her disability prevent her from fighting alongside the other able bodied members of Undertaker with the help of a remote controlled giant robot. So, do you remember Ayase’s awesome void powered Strike Witch moment? That was easily the best thing ever, especially with the kick ass music in the background…so who else stood out? How about someone named Dan Eagleman?! That guy was quite the character whenever he appeared, he always got you so pumped for something exciting. Finally every series needs an oddball villain and who better to fill that role than a crazy mad scientist Segai! Sure he comes off as a super creepy dude because he is REALLY interested in Shu’s void powers (almost on the brink of being a stalker), but whatever you think about him he was still very entertaining to watch.

Wrapping up the fun

Rest in piece good ole truck-chan! You will be missed.

Guilty-Crown00023-650x365

I ask myself that question every morning Ayase.

Guilty-Crown00106-650x365

Dan Eagleman! Really loves his invisible guns.

Also the lovely missing hand puns never ever got old.

Even though Guilty Crown crashed and burned before it could become something amazing, the blog world jumped on it and turned a failed series into something fun and hilarious every week. Like Draggle who created songs and had people sing them? Those were always epic. While you had that going around, Shinmaru had us play guess the dumb aka vote for the stupid facepalm moments of that episode. Over at Sea Slugs Team blog Otou-san took more of an episodic approach to the series, but he always added his own mix of humor just like my meme shot inspired pictures and posts. And last but not least Ajthefourth over on Altair and Vega decided to tackle OH MA SHOE’s character with a cool editorial post. So, all and all Guilty Crown was a great highlight of 2012 for me and a lot of others out there, but thanks for reading and stay tuned for more 12 days of anime themed posts on Metanorn!

Guilty Crown was some of the most fun I had with anime this year. It brought the sphere together in so many wonderful ways.

    • Foshizzel says:

Hell ya! I loved how each of us had our different ways to review that series and it seems like Sword Art Online is getting the same treatment this season hahaha.

Thanks for the comment! I have to check out the other 12 days of anime posts floating around.

  2. BlackBriar says:

Two days down, ten to go. What else do you guys have up your sleeves? Guilty Crown was what [K] is now: a glorious and entertaining train wreck. Lacking in the story but awesome in visuals, it was fun show to watch. What had this going were the idea and use voids throughout the story. The plus was the characters even though some of were wimpy at first like the lead Shu Ouma but became badass towards the end. My favorites are Inori, Ayase, Tsugumi, Hare and Gai (I’m a bit indifferent when he turned evil). The creepy and mysterious ones are Segai, Kenji and that “Grave Keeper of Da’ath” kid Yuu.

Like most, I expected the anime to be eventful and amazing given the studios that were behind it but fell short of expectations, ending up being average which is ironic because the same studios are behind this years’ anime Psycho-Pass and that’s doing fine so far. They even have the same band for the soundtrack. The thing both animes have in common other than studios is that they’re both going to be dubbed by Funimation.

@Fosh: Awesome post and a nice way to close it up. A hot picture of Ayase is always welcome.

    • skylion says:

This post features a criminal lack of Tsugumi. Tis therefor a fail. Nice try, Fosh. But you forgot to butter my bread man…

      • BlackBriar says:

To be honest, I liked Inori more than Tsugumi. She was cute, quiet and mysterious. She was very much like how Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo’s Mashiro is now with her attachment to the lead male. To futher the similarity between the two girls, they have the same seiyuu: Ai Kayano.

        • skylion says:

I”m sorry, you forgot to phrase you comment in form of “Tsugumi is the most awesome because….”. Thanks for playing.

          LOL>

      • Foshizzel says:

Well I wanted to use original artwork of Tsugumi, but I could only find fanart D:

    • Foshizzel says:

Oooh we have a lot of things prepared! Just about everyone wanted in on this cool anime thing and yeah K and you might as well throw in Sword Art Online? All of them are very similar because they look fantastic, but sadly they suffer from lack of story which is the most important part of any great anime…

Great characters in this series! Ayase, Tsugumi and sure why not Hare as well~

OST for Guilty Crown is amazing! I love it a lot, but I have a odd theory running around…usually the worst anime ends up having the best soundtrack? Sure that theory works 50/50 but it does seem odd! Yeah Funimation dubbing GC eventually and that means I have to try it out, but who knows maybe one year we will see GC hit toonami?

Thanks! It is always fun to look back at what GC did to the ani-sphere in terms of various post styles xD

  3. skylion says:

OH MA FOSH! Yeah, this show brings back a ton of memories. The bad ones are locked away tightly (after being beaten to a bloody pulp). The good ones are always with us. Besides, Haganai, this is the first program I was actively commenting on. We had some fun times with this.

So, lets keep cheering for an Asuna/Tsugumi OVA, shall we?

    • Foshizzel says:

OH MA SKYLION! Indeed I remember finding your comments every week on Guilty Crown to be the most fun to read oh and yes of course Haganai which I plan on hitting the second season soon on Metanorn <3

      HELL YESSSSS PLEAAASSEEEE~

    • d-LaN says:

We should cheer for GC LC to get animated…. It looks 50% better atm…..

      Lol yeah, the memes it generated….. It was a crazy fun ride. And I still use OHMA SHOE even to this day ^.^;

    • BlackBriar says:

Bad memories always tend to resurface no matter how bad of a beating you give them. You were around for the Guilty Crown and Haganai posts? Wow, time sure does fly. How long has that been? It still feels like I’ve known you for a short amount of time. Anyway, glad to know you as a fellow commenter, Motherfoshing Gandalf.

  4. Samantha Zan says:

Guilty Crown was one of the best train wrecks I’ve ever watched.

  5. Gecko says:

Indeed, a great train wreck. Very pretty, with a few interesting moments but overall, it still had to collide with something and break apart.
From Daryl to Dan to umm, gee, I can’t think of any other good characters, it was weird.
Also Daryl in school uniform with glasses needs to be used somewhere else, in a better anime. Dan Eagleman could be the weird homeroom teacher, and Daryl will be the perfect student hiding the secret that he wants to join the scorned mecha army to exact revenge on Shu, Inori, and Gai, who bullied him when they were little.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah a train wreck indeed with lots of cool moments! I just wish the entire series was a “cool moment”

Daryl and Dan! Two fun dudes even though one of them is freaking nuts while the other is amazing and AMERICAAAAA~

Gai x Shu x Inori x Mana x zombie clone gai x everyone

    • d-LaN says:

      Guilty Crown Dating Sim?? XD

Daryl lost me went he went Fking nuts…. And srsly he should die at the last ep….. Dan Eagleman was awesome though. Oogumo, Haruka FP friend, Tsugumi get too little screen time…

      • Foshizzel says:

Sure thing! Everyone gets a piece of OH MA SHOE~

Yeah poor Daryl he was a interesting character, but Dan Eagleman for the freaking win! I liked that dude even though he was totally on the wrong team >.< Agreed! Tsugumi needed more screen time for real.

  6. Highway says:

Sounds like this is one you had to be there for, so not much value in watching it after the fact. Probably the same with K, but I can’t stand the way it looks, so that one’s out for me too.

    • skylion says:

We call it a train wreck, and you really did have to be there for all 22 stations. K is far more laid back; to the point of being a somnambulism sort of show.

I mean, I graded Guilty Crown on how much screen time one supporting character had….Oh, Tsugumi, I can only miss you so much…

    • Foshizzel says:

Guilty Crown is one of those love to hate series, but it was interesting to see how everyone took a sinking ship of a failed anime series and flipped it into something hilarious and fun! Good times…man…good times <3

  7. Entrav says:

Certainly, Guilty Crown has fantastic audio and visual quality. It always seems that these visuals take away from the story and it’s really too bad. We even see another example of this this season with K. Guilty pleasure it is.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah K has similar issues right now because yes it looks fantastic, but suffers from lack of story even though the recent episodes have been interesting~

  8. d-LaN says:

    Lol, GC, K and SAO is going to be a legend among the anisphere XD Not to mention the amount of troll post it generated ==;

But yeah, those 3 shows are pretty entertaining if you don’t put your brain in it. Not to mention they look pretty good. After all, as long as I got entertained, the anime pass the test IMO.

    • d-LaN says:

Btw Fosh, Ayase actually has her own manga series, GC Dancing Endlaves. Though it is not available in english yet IIRC….

    • Foshizzel says:

Lololol yeah! Originally I was going to write about SAO versus GC, but my brain couldn’t process double dumb for something like this…troll posts yes but they were amazing posts!

Yeah it really is better to shut off your brain while watching those three series xDD

OH? OMG I MUST READ IT! Ayase <3

  9. Overcooled says:

I totally bailed out and left you alone to blog Guilty Crown halfway (did I even last that long?) through and I commend you for sticking through all the way. Doing my best to stay alive with you for SAO!

Anyways, it’s funny how bad shows can actually encourage the most amazing posts as a result. The ‘sphere needs anime like this to keep people creative so they have an excuse to change things up every now and then. I loved reading some of the other GC posts out there too while it was airing. It was better than watching the actual show!

    • Foshizzel says:

No worries OC! I have been so tempted to drop SAO earlier, but its all good! I had fun with GC even though it was a terrible train wreck.

Agreed! I can’t wait to see what series does this next for everyone I know Day did something with Horizon in the middle of nowhere S2 where she had a list of people who did an episode review and passed it along to others and so on! Really fun idea for a series that bombed…

Draggle and Shinmaru’s posts are hilarious for GC~

  10. AllenAndArth says:

the music and the animation are top-notch! but, yeah…Oh ma shoe’s lifa was the problem…I kinda pity him, he didin’t even get laid with inori despite she being the most oblivious girl ever…the story sucked, thank god for Eagleman and strike witches moment o/

  11. Kyokai says:

What a nice train-wreck, but no one will ever forget the sacrifices of truck-chaaan! 😀

  12. anaaga says:

I’m probably the only commentor in this post that haven’t watched this thing. I’m not planning too either. Funny memes though, Fosh
