This is going to be my comedy fix for this season because it’s coming from the crew of Gintama and Bleach. The premise of a protagonist (Sakura Ichiko), who is too good to be to true with beauty, brain and health with the ability to absorb other people’s luck is quite amusing indeed. Not to mention, things getting so bad that the God of Poverty (Momiji) has to intervene from going rampant. You can ask, why this is a comedy? Well, we’d be seeing the two ladies going against each other’s throats throughout its running with many gags and lulz. I’m reminded of Beelzebub here, the latter episodes of which I enjoyed than the former. The voice cast is pretty experienced and we’ll be hearing HanaKana, Haruka Tomatsu, Hiro Shimono and Kouki Uchiyama (someone correct me, is Yumi Uchiyama Kouki’s sister?). Anyways, this seems interesting enough to check out. |

I must be delirious, because I’m actually interested in this. Yes, the summer season is so devoid of shows that a whacky gem like this about a Poverty God has caught my attention. Soon I’ll just be the resident crazy anime lady (the otaku equivalent of crazy cat lady) who just blogs things like Phi Brain all day. Anyways, I digress. This isn’t THAT weird. Sunrise can vary wildly with their animation quality, but I love em nonetheless. This looks like one of those “mindless fun” series made just to make you laugh. The director has worked on Gintama, which should guarantee at least a few laughs. I’ll count myself lucky to have a comedy without boobs popping out every 2 seconds, incest or more boobs!

A story involving the historical 100 romantic poems and their liberal interpretation as per Kei Sugita’s visualization. I loved Chihayafuru and not only it’s spunk but the poems as well. Sure, I’m not a hard poetry reader or even follower but there have been times that I have been entranced by certain poems; some of Emily Dickinson’s work has become quite favourite. So, when I read about Uta Koi and how it’s all about the hundred poems that I’ve heard a bit during Chihayafuru, my interest was piqued. Though, we haven’t heard much of TYO Animation because they are more of a backup studio but they animated Ginga e Kickoff! last season and Tamayura not too while ago. The animation looks visually appealing and I have high expectation from Nodame Cantabile, Bakuman’s and Honey and Clover‘s Kenichi Kasai.
I’m sure Junichi Suwabe will be mixing honey in our ears with his deep and husky voice but he’s not the only attraction as the seasoned Aya Endo, Chiba Susumu, Yuuki Kaji, Yuya Uchida, Hiro Shimono and Sayaka Ohara to name a few. Though, I’m pretty vague on how the poem interpretation will be executed because they are not very easy to explain. Let’s see how this turns out but I hope it’s a treat for sore eyes. |

I love the concept. I don’t know anything about these poems other than the karuta connection, but with a good enough set of writers, the expansions of these poems into full stories could turn out very good. It’s unfortunate that I don’t like the art style I see in the trailer. The thick outlines like in Samurai Girls are pleasant, but the faces look ugly to me. I’m not expecting much, but I want to see what comes of this.

Tempted to watch because of the ties to karuta, this might hold me over until Chihayafuru S2. ;_; The music in the trailer was relaxing too, which will probably be the tone of the anime. I love poetry anyway, so I’ll give it a shot! I wonder what they mean by “super-liberal” though …

Will this story ever stop being depressing? Why do fangirls even like this series so much? Just how much will DEEN milk this cash cow? (Or Otomate for that matter; there have been like 43 spinoff games already. It needs to stop.) Well, since everyone died at the end of the second season, the creators of Hakuouki decided to make everyone even more depressed and GO BACK to when everyone was still alive in a prequel. So Chizuru isn’t around yet, so instead of her, we get this equally wimpy and useless guy Ibuki Ryunosuke. The rest of the cast is the same though and there’s the addition of a bitchy old man named Serizawa Kamo. …Long story short, everything looks like BL without actually being BL, therefore making it just frustrating.
So once again, it’s DEEN. My respect for them has gone up a bit due to how well they did Sankarea, but at the same time, I think that has largely to do with the director of that anime. The director for this installment of Hakuouki is exactly the same as the other ones (Yamasaki), so I’m not expecting any great leaps of quality or entertainment here. |

Haha Hakuouki, they’re just milking the franchise, aren’t they? Cuz they’re all like dead, why not go back in time and make something when they were alive? That’s totally cool… NOT. Yamasaki Osamu (Hakuouki franchise, Tokyo Revelation) is back as the director, and I am not amused at that. Let’s just say that EVERYBODY is back, with the addition of Nakata Jouji as Serizawa Kamo Seki Tomokazu as Ibuki Ryunosuke. I really don’t want to watch this, but Nakata Jouji! And Seki Tomokazu! How can one resist that combination!?

It’s quite amazing that this series is still getting anime adaptations. This is the only otome game I’ve ever played (courtesy of Kara’s coaxing) and it’s good, but not epic enough to inspire this slew of anime adaptations! Why is this happening?! I guess girls really are a sucker for hot guys with wonderful seiyuu…It’s tempting because there’s no whiny female lead to steal all the boys away with her (lack of) charm in this prequel, but I’m a bit on the fence about watching it. I mean, I didn’t exactly play the game for the PLOT, you know. Ahhh, screw it, Morikubo Showtaro is in it and I’ve started to develop a voice-crush on him so I might just try it. This is basically eyecandy for girls, I would imagine, so I wouldn’t recommend guys who want any…substance…to look into this.

After watching the series, I was so depressed. Seriously! DEPRESSED. Well, not extremely but a good amount. Who wants to watch a series with a bunch of bishies and even the villain is a piece of hawtness and BAM… /letdown. The ending was crap and Chizuru can just go disappear. But overall, the bishie factor was satisfying. Really though, I almost regret finishing the anime but whatever… it was due. Anyways, so this new series is a prequel to the series. I wish it was a yaoi… |

Guys, guys, this looks heartbreaking-ly entertaining. So our protagonist with bad eyesight named Hazuki Ryuusuke landed a part-time job in a flower shop. He would like to land on his boss, Shimao Rokka, too since Hazuki falls in love with her. But how can he do that when Rokka’s dead husband’s spirit is roaming around Rokka, even though she can’t see him? Can Hazuki compete with a dead man?
Romance. So much romance. But how can I miss this when Nakamura Yuichi is going to voice Hazuki? Also, Fukuyama Jun is going to voice the dead husbando aka. Shimao Atsushi! Ohara Sayaka (Irisviel from Fate/Zero, Yuuko from XXXHolic) is going to voice Rokka, but I can’t bother about that right now when I‘m fangirling about FukuJun and Nakamura Yuichi <3 Possibly of bromance between the two is also there! *squeal* Ehm, anyway, Dogakobo disappointed me with their 11eyes, but it seems that Yuru Yuri made up for it. This show is also in this season’s NoitaminA slot, so I’m expecting a lot from this. Matsuo Kou wasn’t at his best when he directed Yozakura Quartet, but since he’s the Episode Director of Gintama, I’ll let that pass. Who knows, maybe directing Natsuyuki Rendezvous will be a breakthrough for him. I look as if I only bother of this show because of the cast, but that’s not the case. Like Kara said, it looks super appealing. The story sounds so heartbreaking, but that’s the appeal of it. Although Atsushi and Hazuki are “rivals,” I have a feeling that this show will mostly revolve on the interaction between the two. Who knows, maybe they will be friends? LOL. But seriously *serious face*. |

Now this sounds pretty interesting along with anaaga’s synposis of the anime. This reminds me of that one movie where the guy’s girlfriend died but the ghost lingers around and scares off the new girlfriends. But I guess this is the other way around and hey looke! It’s Jun Fukuyama as the dead husband, now that is hawt… yeah… Anyways, aside from the dramatic realization of a ghost lingering around the main character’s boss whom he has a crush on, I’m sure there will be a good amount of comedy involved too. The character designs and animation also look pretty appealing. I’ll be sure to check this out. |

UGH, THE FEELINGS THAT WILL COME FROM THIS…I can already feel my heart aching. Anyway, I’ve become quite the Josei fan, so this is automatically on my ‘to-watch’ list, but the supernatural aspect and the unknown complications coming from a rival who’s already dead has further piqued my interest in the series. Like anaaga, I can see the show revolving around the interaction between the two male characters that may lead to a friendship (hopefully?!), and that’s what I’m mainly looking forward to, odd as it may sound. The progression of this show may turn out to be totally heartbreaking, but I think I may be able to pull through this.~

It feels like I’ve seen this series announced since late last year, even during the days of Sengoku Otome airing back in Spring 2011. So yeah, Sengoku Otome/Collection have done this before, right? But wait! Madhouse is doing it. Not so sure I can work up any more excitement however. I’ve given reputable studios a fair chance in the past on shows with a run-of-the-mill premise (see Manglobe w/ Mashiro Symphony) and that one aside from some ecchi wasn’t particularly a good series.
I personally feel that the trailer doesn’t do the show any favors. The visual style is certainly less cheery than the ones I mentioned before, but the patterns look like they’ll just repeat themselves and Oda Nobuna will end up falling in line rather than separating from the pack. And I mean hey, boobs jiggling are nice, but when you see the actual armor jiggling, even the ecchi that I am has to step back and go, “that’s just silly.” |

HELL GENERIC GENDERBENT SENGOKU GENERAL SERIES! Yes like every new season contains a little sister anime you are required to have genderbent sengoku generals…Seriously, what is the appeal to such things?! That said I am currently loving the heck out of Sengoku collection so I can’t really make fun of anyone for liking this setup…I will have to give this one a shot and see how things turn out and yeah I agree Madhouse WUT ARE YOU DOING WITH THIS!? At least it will look pretty and have awesome looking character designs right? Now we just have to see how the actual story plays out right, Jrow? LET’S PUT OUR GUNS ON! or our omg-this-is-so-hnnggg shots or maybe we should prepare some sexually suggestive screencaps? Hooray!

This summer season looks so good, so many shows I want to check out.
Recap of the last season, I think I’ve gotten better at picking shows I will enjoy, of the 8 I wanted to see, I kept all 8 (Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?, Acchi Kocchi, Natsuiro Kiseki, Accel World, Upotte!!, Haiyore! Nyaruko-san, Jormungand, Eureka Seven Astral Ocean). Only one of my seven on the fence shows did I pick up (Hyouka). I have Tasogare Otome x Amnesia on my list to check out (got the first two episodes) since people have recommended it to me.
Not too bad, 100% of my must-watch and picked up one or two.
For this season, I defintely want to watch the continuation of Horizon. But there are so many new shows THAT-I-MUST-SEE!!! This season looks like it’s going to be rough for me…

I approve of this list especially with Eureka Seven Ao! That series needs more love, but ah well sequel series are either fueled by the fanbase or it keeps new fans away because they haven’t seen the original Eureka Seven series.
I will be watching Horizon for the mindless fight scenes because the story is so damn confusing! AHHHHHH!! But at least the action is fine.

– TARI TARI – Slice of life? Where do I sign up?
– La Storia Della Arcana Famiglia – First glance of the cast reminds me of Reborn. Looks interesting enough to warrant a look.
– Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse – I’m a sucker for mecha.
– Binbougami ga! – Premise seems interesting enough, plus it’s a comedy.
– Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate – School life? Sold.
– Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru! – Can’t go without a harem fix. HAREM! HAREM!
– Joshiraku – Looks random, and yet interesting. Going to give it a shot.
– Hagure Yuusha no Estetica – Demons, fighting, cute characters. Hope it turns out as entertaining Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou was.
– Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai – Romance and comedy, I don’t think I’ve ever turned down that combination (at least one-two episodes to get my feet wet)
– Campione – Schools! Battles! You had me at schools.
– Tanken Driland – Always willing to give RPG type animes a shot. After all Vesperia was a gem I wasn’t expecting.
– DOG DAYS’ – Enjoyed the first season. Expecting more of the same.
– Sword Art Online – One of the mosy hyped about shows… first found out about it due to some artwork, looks pretty good. I hope it lives up to its hype.
– Kokoro Connect – Body swap and not hentai? Hmmmm, worth a look.
– Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon II – Horizon 2 OMGWTFBBQ ….SO PUMPED. I AM LADY.
– Oda Nobuna no Yabou – Samurai-era animes are always worthy of a watch for me. Hope this redeems last season’s Sengoku Otome.
– Ebiten: Kouritsu Ebisugawa Koukou Tenmonbu – Romantic school-life comedy. I don’t need to know any more.
So 18 must-check out shows and none I’m on the fence about. Assuming I don’t drop any, that’s…. I need more hours in a day.

Dog Days 2: The first outing was one of my guilty pleasures. I loved the fact that other people loathed it,and that I was just in the groove with it. I enjoy enjoying what other people loathe. It makes me feel special. So yes, seconds of Biscotti please. Oh, yes. Seconds……..rarrrrr
Horizon: Had no interest in the first after two shows (gobs and gobs of characters usually leave me….meh. I’ll prolly pass on the 2nd outing.

SAO: I usually don’t have any expectations going into any show. But I do for this one. It looks to awesome not to. I have seen around the aniblogs that they don’t like the Working!! character design. To me, this is a strength. It lends some “real world” to the show. I mean, Working is a comedy series, but it had real world physics to it. Yeah, high expectations. Hoping to see it jump over some of the AW fail.

It looks pretty and it also has a great voice cast, sadly it has already been written off as a .hack\\SIGN clone by most fans of the whole stuck in a video game theme, but honestly is there really anything original in the world of anime lately? I mean almost 80% of new shows now take something from another series! Video games and movies do the same thing.

Quite the awesome list you have here, Team Meta. It’s shaping up to be an interesting and packed season. Winter was Yuri season, Spring was season of the Dead and given what I’ve seen, Summer is going to be Fantasy and game season.
On the watch list:
Hagure Yuusha no Estetica: Looks like a good ride and what a great ensemble of seiyuus. Nobuhiko Okamoto, Yoko Hikasa, Ayana Taketatsu, Kana Hanazawa and Rina Satou?! Damn!! I’m sold so bring it on!!
Arcana Famiglia: Strong female lead for the win!! I’m getting some Black Butler and Ao no Exorcist vibes just looking at the cover art. The name Arcana Famiglia sounds like a mafia group and the father is using a medieval method of marrying off his daughter.
@Karakuri: Is the game version really good? Because Hiiro no Kakera was a game but I heard the anime adaption wasn’t doing good.
Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse: Satelight again? I’m seeing that name a lot since watching Symphogear and AKB0048. Seems I have another mecha anime to check out but I don’t know what to expect. Rinne no Lagrange 2: Finally it’s back!! It just can’t come fast enough. More mecha and closet yuri vibes to look forward to!!! No need to ask. I can feel the excitement. “So, what do you think we get to see in the second half of Lagrange?” First off, we’ll get the trio back together, more mecha battles, more suspecting on that shifty character Moid who reminds me a lot of Fumito Nanahara and more explanations behind those weird flowers coming from the robots along with that prophecy.
Sword Art Online: I’ll always consider watching an anime that shares similar cyber elements like the .hack franchise or Accel World. Even the part about literally dying after dying in the game sounds like The Matrix. Some of the cast is unknown to me but I’ll use this as an opportunity to familiarize their voices.
Campione!: It might be good but the First Impression is needed to be confirmed. The blonde girl seems like a strong character. Yoko Hikasa (Tofu, you must be loving this), Eri Kitamura and Kana Hanazawa?! *flatlines* CLEAR!!! *zaps* Sorry about that. My heart couldn’t handle the sudden rush of happiness.
Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai: I have to agree with Fosh and Jrow. This feels like High School DxD. Not to mention the girl has red hair except thankfully, the beautiful Rias Gremory wasn’t a tsundere (That can be a problem) and the guy sounds like DxD’s Issei Hyoudou but the trailer show different elements. I’m still onboard to watch it. Fill out a bra the way Rias Gremory can? Rias is one of a kind. She’s hard to top.
Binbougami ga!: I’ll give it a go. The story is weird but will be considered since it has Hanazawa as the lead.
Oda Nobuna no Yabou: Feudal Japan as a setting is a start and the blonde girl looks like the strong silent type (given what I’ve seen in the trailer). I hope it doesn’t disappoint. And I’m already prepared for some possible sexually suggestive screencaps.
Nice strings of specials (Inu x Boku SS, Persona 4). I’m even inclined to watch the Guilty Crown special.

THE GAME VERSION OF ARCANA IS SO MUCH FREAKING FUN. …I’m working on a review that will hopefully be out soon, but yeah. It’s my favourite for so many reasons.
Let me tell you right now, Hiiro was an EXTREMELY boring game (the anime fixed that kind of, but there’s no fixing DEEN’s shitty animation). It made me extremely apathetic due to the sheer length and amount of things it wanted me to read. Arcana is more action and Felicita is 189234789021 times more awesome.

The suits for the girls in Muv-Luv reminds me of the suit Guilty Crown’s Tsugumi uses when she’s doing her hacking. But it also brings back memories of HoTD, mainly Rei and Saeko showing off their curves. And giants robots are here. Gundam, anyone? We can only hope it turns out good.
It’s about time Rinne no Lagrange returned to us. The wait was agonizing. More of Madoka, Lan and Muginami along with mecha action. I’m still bummed it’s 12 episodes again. Well, nothing’s perfect. The only fact that might be liked is that when it’s over, we’ll be here just in time for the second half of Jormungand.
I don’t even care if this Guilty Crown special turns out ridiculous or not because I’ve watched the full series. I’ll watch it simply because it’s there and I want to know what the story is about. I miss the pulling weapons out of people’s bodies, though.

Yes. How many rom coms shows are you going to watch this season, Skylion? All of the Rom Coms! ALL OF THEM!
Yuru Yuri. One of the things I love about this show: As a writer you try to find the perfect alchemy between tropes. Comedy tropes and Yuri tropes. The first outing worked that alchemy to perfection. I don’t expect the second season to fail. If anything it will take the sting out of No More Acchi Kocchi.
Campione! I like the premise. It sounds like a good mix up between shounen and shoujo styles. Plus, beautiful, strong girl in an elegant red dress with a rapier. I’m in.
Chitose. I’m still a fan of Kodomo no Jikan. That manga takes you by surprise. So, we have roughly the same premise but with comedy, and the main male lead being a decent fellow. I’m in.
This is why I can’t have Sex: I loved High School DxD. It was goofy, dramatic, oppai, and lot’s of fun. That this mildly imitates that is not a negative to me. Besides, this lady has a scythe. I’m in.
Astronomy Club mix up show: Yeah, I’m in. I mean, why not?
Joshiraku: This seasons equivalent to Lucky Star!? Sure, I’ll start a 5:1 betting pool on that. I’m in.

Kokoro Connect: So, K-On’s character designer, and Sliver Link is doing it. I mean, they went from Nice Try Guys, to OMG the last three episodes of Dusk Maiden was so fucking METAL. After watching Part A of the pre-release, I can already so strong characterization. Another show of high expectations. I’m………in.
Imouto Summer 2012. Eye candy character design. A plot hat was chosen by the throw of a dart. Any sane person should avoid this show like a dead rat on the sidewalk. I’m…..Hells Bells, I’m in. Mea culpa.
Tari Tari. Like Hawt, I am a huge fanboy of Hanasaku Iroha. I mean, I got my family to watch it. They really enjoyed it…thanks Crunchyroll! I don’t care if it repeats the drama or characterization of Hanairo; I didn’t get enough of that the first time around. I can’t watch this show right now why?

If I remember what my light novel reading friends are telling me, yes, SAO and AW are in the same “universe”, and SAO is sort of a prequel to Accel World. That’s assuming Kazuto Kirigaya/Kirito of SAO is the dad of AW’s Kuroyukihime. I think the AW internet collar is a derivative of NervGear technology.

OK. Just watched the Campione pre-air.
First: Animation quality it pretty good. I suspect that the full version will be even better.
Second: Characters. So far they seem to be cut from the basic of tropes, but they do have something…
Third. Exposition between the workings of the Heretic Gods and humans is just damn intriguing. This exposition was very well weaved into characterization of our main leads, and the supporting cast.
Fourth: Solid magical stuff. None of the arcane stuff should surprise an average anime fan, but they do put a good spin on it, and make it their own.
Fifth: I like these two main characters; earnesty goes quite a long way for the female lead, and sheer guts for the male.
In essence it looks like solid entertainment. It has a good deal of eyecandy for the female lead, and the male lead doesn’t look like a complete dork. The romance starts in the first episode, and that, in and of itself, is something of a draw. She really digs this guy for reasons she may not be aware, so expect a slight tsundere attitude from her, with the compliment WTF from the male.
IOW: I had middling expectations from the show, and it managed to exceed them. I’m glued.

Thanks for breakdown of series. Now I definitely will check it out. Btw, interesting fact, seiyuu for the MC of Campione and Sword Art Online are the same and both are kind of battle anime. I hope he can maintain diversity and not sound the same.

Oda Nobuna no Yabou After Sengoku Collection, I just cannot afford to miss out on this genre. The character design is appealing, and the action promises to be something to watch. Now, Sengoku Collection had something of a vignette approach to it that I really loved. but Oda looks to have more of a “long range” story approach. I will be checking this out.

Unexpected side-effect of Metanorn 2012 Summer Preview Post:
My backlog of old shows has grown almost larger than the new shows I’m hoping to watch! And that’s after finishing Yuru Yuri season 1. I wonder if I should stop while I’m ahead? Well, I’m certainly not going to hope that an upcoming season sucks to catch up, because better a big backlog of great things to watch than a hole with nothing good to see.

I really enjoyed Yuru Yuri. Lots and lots of fun. 3 episodes into Rinne no Lagrange, and it seems a lot of fun so far as well. I should be able to catch up before falling too far behind S2. 🙂
