Spring Anime Catalogue 2012

Welcome to METANORN’s Spring Anime Catalogue of 2012!

Lots of exciting titles await you~

———————————————————————————

Oh right, it’s supposed to be the SPRING season. There’s no such season here because it’s always summer, summer and more summers in South Asia. Except for some unannounced rain and power outages, I don’t much feel the change in weather. Anime wise, there are too many Action and Sci-fi series releasing! What’s up with that?! I don’t think even with the monumental amount of shows I check out every season, I can regularly watch all the Spring shows. Still, I’m ready for this loaded season and really looking forward to Fate/Zero finale, Sakamichi no Apollon, Uchuu Kyoudai, Tsuritama and Hyouka.
Even though Winter is over, I don’t see any possibility for there to be a Spring where I live. Last year Spring got skipped and overtaken by the cold rain. Things aren’t looking too good this year too. But! I will be able to have summer early because I will be leaving the country for vacation in April. So exciting~! But anyways! Yeah Spring Anime!! I won’t be participating in this review but as you can tell, I left my mark on this catalogue. Working in the shadows of Metanorn has its perks. Unfortunately, I’ll be taking another hiatus this season but for sure I’ll be back in the summer. But that doesn’t mean that I won’t be watching any anime. I have my eyes on a few, mainly the action ones and that one sports anime. As well, can’t wait to see the rest of Fate/Zero.
The barren winter wasteland is melting away to reveal a vivid crop of spring shows! I must admit that the Winter season wasn’t very impressive, but Spring seems to be gunning to impress. I see a ton of shows that have caught my interest…how am I ever going to watch them all? HOW?! There’s a wide variety too, so everyone should be able to find at least something to tide them over.
Of course I look forward to Spring: it’s the only time we have perfectly balanced weather here in SoCal! Spring never fails to let me down, both weather and anime-wise, so seeing interesting shows such as Sakamichi no Apollon, Tsuritama, and the return of Kimi to Boku have me extremely giddy for what’s to come. I just hope college actually gives me a stress-free break to enjoy the season…!
Hooray winter is over and done with, but there are a few series from the winter anime season that I will miss. Thankfully Spring season is here to fill in the void left by some shows about magical OH MA SHOE…so what am I most excited for with this new season? Eureka Seven AO for my Mecha needs and a bit of undead fun with Kore wa zombie desu ka? of the Dead! However I usually enjoy trying out a wide variety of everything and I’ll be checking out a few I would normally pass on.
I don’t really know how to evaluate the Winter season of anime, but I can tell you that I’m really glad to see this Spring crop of shows debut. Maybe some of you readers lost interest in the noitaminA block in ‘11, but it’s possible that the Spring ‘12 block will have you looking forward to those particular shows. If I could only watch one of these shows, it would easily be the last half of Fate/Zero.
Is it Spring already? Wow time flies so fast, I never realized it’s already Spring. Maybe because all I can see is sun and rain, but I guess that’s okay… No it’s not. I want flowers everywhere on the street. I want to sit under a tree and look at the beauty of blooming flowers. I want-I want… Real Spring! *sob* This is not fair. I’m starting to loathe all you people who have all four seasons. Yes, I’m jealous. I- I can only see flowers in the anime. And damn it, it seems that this season’s anime list is FABULOUS. I’m so damn excited for so many anime, I don’t know whether I can watch all of them or not. But I have to. I WANT TO. Thank god I’m having a hikki life with no job and school. So yeah, all you people with four seasons can get yourself busy while I’ll be here watching anime all day long!…. Wow, my life sounds so sad right now.
See, the sucky thing about Florida is that we never even have a legitimate winter season. It’s like Florida decided that “Oh. I don’t feel like being cold. I’ll give you guys a week or two of coldness but I’m going to rain and then get super hot and humid again.” I didn’t even get to bust out my awesome winter coat….Bah. At least I have the awesome shows this season to tide me over! And man, there are DEFINITELY titles that I’m excited about here!
YES! Go away, cold weather and bring on the rain! The best season of the year is here! Of course, aside from being excited about the weather, there’s also anime to be excited about. Since winter seemed to be the season of yuri, sismance and lolis, I wonder what this season will claim itself as… It’s hard to tell just yet.
Well, the wheels keep on turning, and as our Winter shows drop out one by one, it’s time for Spring to begin things anew. To be honest, I tend not to pay much attention to shows that are upcoming except for a few big names. I’ll generally watch the 1st episode of a decent number of shows, and pay attention to the reception of others to find out what I should watch. I can say, only thing that excites me now is Fate/Zero, but I’m sure that will change as the shows get released and impressions start rolling in.
Winter, don’t leave me!!! (ノ`Д ́)ノ Ah well, there’s no stopping time! Spring is my favorite season of the year, the weather’s perfectly cool and the trees look so pretty, but I suppose none of that really matters when it comes to anime! This upcoming season looks to be shaping up quite nicely, there are plenty of shows to go around whatever your taste in genres might be, but what I’m looking forward to most is the noitamina block. I’ll have plenty of free time in these next few months, so I’m looking forward to diving into as many shows possible!v
Yaaaaay, Spring has sprung! It’s when pretty Sakura trees are starting to blossom in Japan and romantic anime-like scenery is everywhere…Yeah, pretty much still Sun, Sun, Sun here in Singapore. (o´Д`) On the even brighter side, this season is bursting with awesome anime that are begging to be watched. Let’s welcome Spring with a BANG!~ (◎>U<◎)
To be frank, I’m really SORRY for this delayed reviewbut you can already see there were just too many titles and lots of delicious information to be shared. So, we have tried our best to cover at least 85% of it and hope to give you more than just a summary but first impression of spring shows that need checking out.

>> So, Let’s Get This Fabulousness Started~

  1. […] for y’know, life?). If you need a complete and thorough preview/guide, I’d definitely Metanorn’s always-detailed […]

  2. SPIRAL says:

Maybe it’s just me, but I have an incredible feeling for Natsuiro Kiseki. Not sure if it’s SPHERE trying to seduce me, but it’s going to be the dark horse.

Apart from FZ and Apollon ofc.

    • Hawthorne says:

You’re not alone on that! I’m pretty hyped for it myself. XD

      • Jrow says:

They’re pretty secretive about the plot, so who knows what could happen. Dark horse is a possibility and Sunrise doing a s’life is definitely unlike them from my recent memory of Gundams and Sacred 7’s.

  3. Moni Chan says:

    this season is looking good.
all those season 2’s from anime last year.

Im not really into sports anime but I need to watch Kuroko no Basuke. I heard the ED and it sounds awesome. Then again Hyadain sings it.

Im surprised I don’t see Hanazawa’s name on the seiyuu lists . Maybe i’m not looking as well as I need 2

    • Kyokai says:

This season is just too good. >< Check the first line of three roles and more to find HanaKana roles. :3

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I noticed the lack of Hanazawa for this season! Maybe she is taking a break at last? LOLOL just kidding I am sure she will pop up somewhere.

  4. skylion says:

This show is the one that I hope will fill the hole that Hanasaku and Tamayura left behind.

  5. Ithekro says:

Bandai’s Channel released the first ten minutes of the first episode of Space Battleship Yamato 2199 as a final teaser to get people interesting. This is more or less the same scenes form the old 1974 release, but on man…does this look nice. A proper space battle.

I’ve been waiting for something like this a while now.

I will also watch Hyouka, and continue to watch Ozuma, and Mouretsu Pirates, which is not what I expected, but much, much better than any space opera I’ve seen in a while. And it has a lot of Yamato references.

    • anaaga says:

HUFF HUFF I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS even though I haven’t watched the original. I still can’t find it until now in the net and RL (SPB isn’t that famous here so people don’t sell it ;___;)

      • skylion says:

I haven’t really watch the original since my aforementioned first viewing back in the Seventies. So, I’m pretty chuffed as well…

    • Kyokai says:

      This looks pretty epic~

  6. Toori-chan says:

I’ll be watching all the series since nothing doesn’t want my attention. I’ll filter out unwanted series after every 1st episode. Fate/Zero, Kore wa Zombie Desuka, Kimi to Boku and Phi Brain will be my main focus (means I’ll watch the moment it’s released).

    • Karakuri says:

Ahahaha Phi Brain is just too fabulous to pass up. …Yeah, I think I’ll be doing the exact same thing with just watching everything.

  7. skylion says:

If you haven’t checked out the pre-air Accel World 1&2, then you muuuuuust.

    • Karakuri says:

      I assume it’s good then?

      • skylion says:

I want to be cautious. I thought Guilty Crown would be FTW, but we all saw how that turned out. Accel is by some of the same people, believe it or not (script and story composition…our main hate-on with GC).

I’m saying you muuuuuuust, so that we can compare notes. I thought it was a fantastic start.

  8. Fallenblackroses says:

Thank you! You have no idea how much I love these first-impressions. Thanks for putting in all the hard work 🙂

  9. amado says:

damn, was too late to post my comment earlier.
    *reserves spot*

    • amado says:

      going to watch:
kore wa zombie desu ka – sequel, obviously going to watch it for that kick its not a kick!
jormungand – this one will be interesting.
fate/zero – again a sequel. its a no brainer and one of the runnings for best anime.
tasogare otome X amnesia – need some suspense and horror once in a while.
hyouka – seems like it will be good.
natsu iro kiseki – pumped up on this. there might be yuri as well.
medaka box – the manga has “ended”. though I dont think 1st season will be good at all, at least for the viewers. recommend the manga if your looking for crack with some mindscrews. dont underestimate its low ranking.

      might watch:
acchi kocchi – might be fun.
accel world – im uncertain of this so its not in confirmed.
tsuritaima – going to see if noitimanA is cursed.
      haiyore! nyaruko-san – kawaii
shining hearts – might be sweet.
sengoku collection – dont worry jrow, I remember. there’s yuri so maybe.
queens blade too bad there’s so much id have to see before I see this season.

      • Jrow says:

Ooo thanks Amado! Oh, and it’s been a long time, but I did watch Oretachi way back. Good series, weird kind of split-personality thing going on with the main character(s).

With Queen’s Blade, it doesn’t seem like you have to watch past seasons or the OVAs. All you need to know is that, from it, Claudette became queen. There might be a couple things relating to the past, but story-wise they wouldn’t be important enough to require watching seasons 1 & 2.

  10. Tofu says:

The only ‘new roles’ Hikasa Yoko has is Phi Brain 2 and Kingdom… T___T I’m glad I’m seeing a second season of Kore wa Zombie though then again, I dropped Phi Brain at like ep 5? It wasn’t my kind of show.. and Kingdom just doesn’t seem like my kind of show as well (reminds me of Dog Days…). *sigh* Maybe next season? :\

I’ll be giving all the new anime a shot and surprisingly, I actually kinda liked Saint Seiya even though I’ve never seen the first one XD Nice work on the previews as always guys!

Accel World is definitely one of my most anticipated, can’t wait for it to come out (not pre-air… that quality is bad as…)

    • BlackBriar says:

Yoko Hikasa has a role in Phi Brain season 2? Just when you thought the show couldn’t get any better. She’s starting to branch out very much this year. Maybe she’s aiming to match Kana Hanazawa’s achievements last year.

      • Tofu says:

Ahahaahaha even as a fan I’d say that she can’t reach the same amount of achievements Hanazawa achieved purely because Hanazawa has a brilliant voice which can adapt really well. It was like her voice was ‘made’ to voice act for anime.

Though wishful thinking, I’d love Hikasa to get more popular roles and hopefully become more popular herself ^^

  11. akagami says:

I finally got around to catching up on the spring previews (after the spring season has started *gasp*). I haven’t read through the comments yet because I don’t want to bias my view, so…

Last season there was 13 new shows that I wanted to check out, of which I dropped 3 (Zero, Symphogear, Kill Me Baby). Not bad, a 23% drop rate. Actually dropped two other shows (DxD and Inu) but picked them back up after some reviews – my opinion of those two overall was “they’re alright”. I think the surprise hit for me was “Papa no Iu Koto o Kikinasai” – I really enjoyed watching this while going in with very low expectations.

So looking at this spring season, my to-watch list is (8 shows):
-Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? OF THE DEAD (YES! The first season was funny and great to watch, definitely looking for more of Ayumu in mahou-shoujo attire).
-Acchi Kocchi (MC looks like Konata, I’m sold. I tend to like most 4-koma adaptions, so looking forward to this.)
-Natsuiro Kiseki (slice-of-life? Sign me up. Sunrise? Haha, I really want to see how this’ll turn out).
-Accel World (I’m really looking for some redemption after Guilty Crown. But why have OH MA SHOE as the MC?!? I’m still traumatized!!!)
-Upotte!! (Gun battles, girls, school setting. Writer did Papa, so I’m definitely trying this out.)
-Haiyore! Nyaruko-san (Not sure what this is, but it’s a school setting comedy, so I’ll check it out.)
-Jormungand (Ah. Sounds like a unique action series. White Fox is animating, so I’ll see where this goes, at least for the first bit).
-Eureka Seven Astral Ocean (OH YEAH! I really enjoyed the original Eureka Seven and the unique cast, though I never watched the movie that came after, since it seemed like an alternate re-telling.)

    On-the-Fence List (7 shows):
-Medaka Box (Meh… after reading 100+ chapters I’ve really lost interest in the whole series… seems way too repetitive. This is a typical shounen series – fight-get stronger-fight more.)
-Sankarea (the manga is enjoyable, but it’s more of a kill-time manga than a really-enjoyable one. I’ll either check out the first episode, or more likely, wait for someone to blog the first couple of episodes.)
-Fate/Zero 2nd Season (I don’t know. The first season had really high production values, but somehow it wasn’t that enjoyable for me. I still need to finish the first season! Stay/Night was butchered from what I’m told by Type-Moon fans, but it still ended up being pretty enjoyable).
-Nazo no Kanojo X (Romance, but the retro art? Not sure how I feel about this. But if the romance story pulls through, I’ll probably follow it through. Someone blog this and report back! ^^)
Shining Hearts ~Shiawase no Pan~ (Almost all the shows I’ve watched that had talented artists headlining the show have turned out to be busts in the end – Guilty Crown, Hanasaku Iroha come to mind. I might give it a shot but I don’t have high hopes. Funny though, both those shows had really good music however.)
Hyouka (It’s Kyoto, but it’s mystery. One step removed from horror. And I so do not like horror. If it manages to stay in the mystery realm without any super-natural/horror elements tossed in I might bite. Maybe.)

So only 8 shows on my watching list. Most of the other shows are sequels to shows I never enjoyed/picked up, or fall into the HORROR realm, or just seem too weird for my liking. Looks like a light season for me, yay, that gives me time to catch up on my backlog!

Btw, what’s up with all these series featuring animals as humans? Is this some new fad I’m not aware of?!?

    • Jrow says:

So you finished 10 shows in Winter? I was doing my season review and found I finished/continued 10 myself. I loathed Papa Kiki for a stretch there, but there’s some good to be found in that series.

-Accel World – haha! Maybe if you think of him as Issei it’ll be less painful.
-Eureka 7 – Pocket Full of Rainbows is a retelling, and not a popular one by any means. I think it tried to go a bit darker than the series and it missed in a number of spots. I’m cautiously optimistic about Astral Ocean.

  13. Tofu says:

I’m kinda ashamed of myself for not ever taking any attention to what I’m about to ask but does Metanorn only post fire impressions on shows they will continue to blog? Or do you guys do first impressions of whatever comes and then decide what you will go with?

    • Kyokai says:

We cover most of the shows (minus kiddy ones) for first impressions but only blog the ones we like. Though, with our number, we usually end up covering at least 70-85% of the shows per season.

  14. Mushyrulez says:

Holy fuck, METANORN’s season previews have more content than RandomC’s! It’s like, RandomC’s trying to copy you guys with their hiring of more writers for their season previews now or something!

    • Kyokai says:

Lol, Mushy, Omae Na! RandomC’s is an awesome place as always and they needed more writers because Divine’s gone on hiatus due to RL work. I always had work so well~ :3
