Mazinkaiser SKL OVA – 01
Giant robots with Epic battles!
Happy New Year, readers! This week has been quite slow with nothing really updating for a while. It was strange not getting any Index II updates as well. I recently went back and downloaded Steam, just to try out some left 4 dead 2 and a few music themed games. Other than games I am getting ready to draw new fan art for Winter 2011 anime line-up! Things should get exciting soon. Anyway onto the review for this crazy action show! This one is for the much needed Mecha fans reading Metanorn.
Plot for this is simple, two pilots battle against three rival factions, fighting on Machine Island, which happens to also double as a prison. Thanks to a device called the Gravity Curtain, basically a giant hurricane, stuck in place blocking people from getting in and out. To make matters worse the Gravity Curtain is going to explode in sixty-six hours! And it’s up to Ken and Ryo to save the day.
You’re badass if you have glowing eyes and stand in front of fire.
Each pilot has their own style of fighting, Ryo prefers more duel handguns and Ken likes chopping people in half with his massive sword. They can also switch back and forth going from guns to swords. I personally like Ryo’s style of combat rather than swinging a sword around. They are joined by a girl named Tsubasa Yuki a special member of the Gren Falcon Squad aka “super special girl”.
This is Yuki, she can survive anything…
DUDE, THIS 3D INFLIGHT MOVIE IS AWESOME! Oh…crap this is real!!
Pro landing skills there Yuki…
Robots are made of butter in the future.
Yuki wakes up with some maiden-looking girls, who also have mechs of their own but are mostly putting up a barrier keeping Kiba’s army out. Kiba controls one of the three factions fighting for control, who also happens to hate Ken and Ryo. Or he is jealous that the Mazinkaiser is better looking than his “mega-tron” rip off?! He gets beaten and retreats.
Ryo is so cooooool! *BRO-FIST*
Kiba knows how to party after a sweaty Mecha fight.
Kiba’s army doesn’t sit quiet for long and attempts to battle the girls again! Only to have Yuki warn the guys who seem to be lazy calling forth their robot to kick Kiba’s ass. Of course Ryo and Ken have the most over powering machine in the show so far, but it’s still cool how they fight!
Bitch, you look like Mega-tron!
Yes, Robots bleed in this! Leading to some cool finishing moves…
Should we use that?!
ROCKET!
PUNCH!!!
PEW PEW PEW, GUNFIRE SPAM!
“Hey, Kiba, wanna join us for an epic BBQ?”
“You guys are so nice…”
“Something smells funny….OH GOD, I’M ON FIRE!!”
Victory! Now let’s go get drunk!
EXTRA Screens!
Someone works out! Look at those legs!
Mecha repairs twenty billion, waiting for Rocket punch arms to return…priceless.
“YARRRR!!” “Fanboys ahoy, miss”
Actions pose, Goooooo!!!
End Thoughts
This is the kind of mecha show I love! Over the top fighting, with machines beating the snot out of each other is pure win in my books. Then again I never really saw the series that came before this, but from the storyline, I don’t really think you have to. That said, I found this to be very enjoyable and fun, the story seems fairly easy to follow with a great cast of wild and crazy characters. Except for Yuki who only seems to be around for fan service bait later on. This is a three part OVA series after all and you do see hints of another super machine in the opening so we can only guess she gets to join the two lead guys for some robot action.
The “bad guys” are also very interesting characters, giving a dynasty warriors feel to them as they command and fight along with their armies. Kiba was a pushover it seemed, but he still had a unique looking mecha. Even though to me it screams Megatron from Transformers. The Mazinkaiser itself looks badass too! Love all those skulls and the color scheme worked too. Also the outfits the bad guys wore reminded me of watching Mad Max with my dad, or some other 80’s theme-movies.
I really enjoyed the music too; lots of rock moments pop up during all the fighting, the opening and ending songs. They really fit the crazy action set in this show. But in the end this seemed like a straight up rock-em-sock-em robots with explosions popping up everywhere. Can’t wait to see more of this as this was my first time picking up Mazinkaiser and it was great! Glad it caught my eye.
Preview!
Guess we have to wait another month for more Mazinkaiser SKL! But the preview had Ken running along a rooftop slashing away at some baddies. Ryo gets to show off more of his ace shooting skills too! And more Mecha combining, to take on the next big boss Garan.
Thanks for reading mecha fans! See ya.

Action ftw (i’ll have to check the choreography when I watch it). Mech designs, not so much… but that’s just my tastes. for me realistic/sci fi mecha>super mecha

LOLOLOLOL dem legs
Ryo is very cool! and the story is quite simple indeed and awesome fights, probably the coolest fights I have seen in a Mecha show.
Well they do have some old school look to them, but I like the designs they could a bit better…
