First Impression – Starry✰Sky

Three girls, a trap, plus an otome game turned anime equals some surprisingly mixed reviews~

Hoshi: Hello all~! Hoshi here with some of our lovely ladies and our lovely trap of Metanorn for Starry Sky! I find the fact that a trap and three girls covering a bishie-filled anime is so wildly appropriate hahaha x’D Anyways, I was actually anticipating this anime a lot during Christmas and was dancing anxiously in my chair during a Christmas party so I can hurry back on my computer and check to see if it was subbed. Its epic list of EVERY fantastic male seiyuu in the anime world was so tantalizing I couldn’t help but sign myself up to watch this. Yet now that its first…episode (?) has passed, is the seiyuu list (and the gorgeous bishies) the only thing there is too love about Starry Sky?

Ness: Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday filled with some R&R this past weekend. It was nice to have at least one day off from work and I gained some free time to watch some anime. So, Starry Sky is finally here, a sign that the winter anime season is approaching (or maybe it already has). As the Trap of Metanorn, I expect to see lots of eye candy from this anime and if I don’t get any ‘kyaaah” feeling, then by all means someone else take over.

Captain: Hopefully everyone’s doing well, you know, had a nice Christmas and all~ Finally my Internet connection’s working again, so I can get on with some anime. It’s Winter season now, and Starry Sky’s out, so..here goes. The art style and seiyuu list pretty much sold me on this one. It’s a reverse harem with only one girl, so I’ve heard – Somewhat like Fruits Basket. I didn’t really like Fruits Basket, so I hope I’ll like Starry Sky. If I end up hating the show 5 minutes into it, maybe..someone else can review this. Looking forward to hearing Sugita Tomokazu though 😀

Hime: GAH. It’s so purdy. Must…watch…shiny…bishounen…! I’ve been looking forward to Starry Sky since they released the seiyuu line up, and when I saw the designs I got even more excited. Unf. Sign me up. I knew I’d be following this series even if it turned out to be terrible, even though the last reverse harem I saw destroyed my soul a little with each episode. Miracle Train! *shake fist* It’ll be hard to really get a good feel of the show in only 10 minutes but I’ll give it my best shot. And try -not to be too distracted by the prettiness- to be objective.

Hoshi: Now the Starry Sky anime has done something interesting, which I need to point out before anyone gets confused: since there are 12 different guys, there’s going to be 12 different arcs, so each “episode” is only 10 minutes of one person’s arc. However in February, they’re going to smush all the arcs together into regular thirty minute episodes (i.e three arcs for each 30 minute episode) for TV.

Our first arc starts with Capricorn, a red haired boy named Tomoe Yoh. One starry night as a young kid, he is walking around with his telescope, eying the sky when he suddenly trips and drops it. It rolls away, but is picked up by a girl.

The two sit together and start talking about the night sky. The girl finally introduces herself as Yahisa Tsukiko as his flashback ends.

Back to him as a teenager, Yoh enters Seigetsu Academy, a school specializing in astronomy with a large majority of male students and only one female student. Yoh decided to enter the school rather than go to America and research astronomy with his parents  because he had to meet his ‘first evening star’ first.

Yoh is brought into his classroom, where he finds out he’s sitting next to the only girl at the school, Yahisa Tsukiko. As they finally meet each other again, she doesn’t recognize who he is, but Yoh simply tells her that they’ve met before~.

End thoughts

Hoshi: After watching this ten minute arc, I’m going to say right off the bat that I’m going to probably watch this mainly for the purty character designs and animation. I think the character designs are freaking gorgeous, despite some of the complaints the players of the original game think. The bishies already looked wonderful to begin with, so the fact they still look pretty damn great after being adapted to animation is spectacular. I was even spazzing out during Yoh’s childhood flashback because he looked so ADORABLE!! The animation is pretty decent as well, but from this first arc, nobody really moves much, heh. There was a lot of stand still and face shots so I might have to watch more to get a better feel of the animation.

As for this first story, it was very bland; typical childhood love story where he finds his first love again as a teenager and plans to get together with her. It wasn’t exciting at all, and all the while I was hoping something more explosive would happen, but it didn’t. I don’t want to be too harsh with this arc though because I know that there is going to more about him later on. Actually, I don’t want to be too harsh on Starry Sky in general because we still have what? 11 more bishies to go? I’m hoping someone else’s story or arc is going to be a bit more exciting *praying it’s the guy who Hiroshi Kamiya plays* So I’ll keep up with Starry Sky because like I said, the character designs are freaking gorgeous and that seiyuu list is just as completely irresistible as sexy asian men doing hip-thrusting dance moves. We’ll see what happens when it comes to the story once they start airing it regularly on TV. Otherwise, I’ll be just drooling over the bishies~.

Ness: I have read a few about this otome game turned anime and I found it interesting. It’s no surprise that most of the girls here at Metanorn had an interest in this anime. Who can resist a harem of anime bishis? As well, I’m sure that most girls who watch this anime will start to hate the main and only female lead Tsukiko Yahisa voiced by Orikasa Fumiko (Bleach: Rukia, FMA: Brotherhood: Riza Hawkeye and Hellsing: Seras Victoria).

With all that aside, my first impression on Starry Sky isn’t excitement and I didn’t expect for this episode to be around 10 minutes long. However, it makes sense since the series has to cover all 12 guys and I’m unsure if I could keep up with 30 minute episodes each focusing on a different guy. On another note, I never heard of a high school that specializes in astronomy but I guess it’s needed in this series as a sort of background surrounding to these 12 guys who represent the zodiac constellation. Can I go to a high school that specializes in ruling the world? Oh please~

I do say, the animation isn’t all that bad but I have heard some raving from those who have played the game about comparison to the character designs and I understand what they mean that the game characters look way better because they do. Also, the parents of Tomoe Yoh look the same age as him and even the teacher looks younger. There isn’t much of a difference in ages in the character designs, how horrific that the viewers can also ogle over the parents/adults. Anyways, I do like the background designs and the ending theme is pretty cool because it reminds you that this is based off of a game.

As for the story itself, it’s not something new yet many girls still love it. This first episode follows our first bishi of the series, Tomoe Yoh and his existence is typical but the starting point that will trigger competition among the other guys for the girl. If you’re looking for a harem bishi anime with some real story content, this isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for just something to go “kyaaah” over, be my guest in watching Starry Sky because there’s 12 bishis to choose from. Nevertheless, I didn’t get any “kyaaah” feeling from this anime (as stated in the opening), so I shall pass.

Captain: I.. lost it at the part where Yoh’s eyes were complimented, which was, I think, really 5 minutes into the show. No, just..no more. I honestly don’t know how I managed to pull through half an hour of that. They covered so little in one episode! It was just him going to school and meeting his little childhood friend. And WHY ARE HIS PARENTS SO UNDERSTANDING. What kind of parent would let their own kid go back to Japan from France just to see someo — I’m sorry to those who like this show, I really am. I can’t stand it. It’s just not something I like. Usually I’d give a show 3 or 4 more episodes to prove itself, but for this one.. NO, just no more for me. Though I do think the school is pretty cool, though. Other than that.. *crawls into a hole and dies*

Hime: Well that was a thrill ride, wasn’t it? *sarcasm* But in all seriousness I didn’t care that it wasn’t all that exciting. Because this is where I become a shallow bishiwhore and just blindly follow the rest of the drooling fandom. IT’S SO GOD DAMN PRETTEH. C’MON! Their school uniforms are awesome as well, I can see cosplayers wetting themselves in joy over this. I don’t like how they’ve chosen to air it though. I’d rather wait and have full episodes then these little internet snipits. It’s seems pointless I mean, guys, you may be good but you’re not Hetalia, this is not the way to make your show popular. I’ll keep watching, of course, but I have to judge it based on the other things I’ve seen. I’m definately not watching this for substance. I’m only hoping that it’ll be even a fraction of the awesome that was Ouran High School, since I don’t think I could take another Miracle Train or Uraboku. Damn you soul-destroying fanservice!

~The trap and (half of) the ladies of Metanorn have spoken. Until next time then~!!

Yeppp…I wasn’t so impressed either, but the fact that I love the games and the character designs make up for it XD.

    • Hoshi says:

      ~Yeah hahaha, it seems all there is to like is the character designs and voice actors ^^;

  2. Captain says:

*slaps self* I knew I was the only one who hated it.
But seriously. Character designs, art, VOICE ACTORS. They win over everything to me /shot

    • Hoshi says:

~NU-UH Ness didn’t like it too much either >> (At least that’s what I’m assuming from her end thoughts).

      • Ness says:

Hahah I’m the only one that stuck to limit 3 paragraphs for end thoughts. I actually put some time to think about it too. Well, I didn’t like the episode, but I don’t hate it. I think I’d rather wait for the 30 min episodes which I didn’t know about ’till now hehe.

        • Captain says:

Ness, your end thoughts were..so..long. Well, at least someone else didn’t like the episode.

…but I’m still the only one who hates it /shot

  3. anaaga says:

three things i found illogical in this anime:

    1) school that focuses on astronomy. it’s not like i don’t mind, but they have a branch that focuses on zodiacs/or something involving that? really. REALLY. what the hell are the students gona do in the future, roadside fortune tellers?

    2) the guy fell in love with a girl he doesn’t know. they just met once. and the only thing they talked about are freaking stars. and how nice his eyes are. and he FELL IN LOVE WITH THAT GIRL UNTIL NOW. OH MY GOD THAT IS SOO REALISTIC RIGHT THERE

    3) a school with only one female student. oh puhleeze. even SYD doesn’t do this shit.

but i’m still gona watch this anyway. for the bishies

but what’s with the grammar in the ED song? *facepalm*

    • Hoshi says:

~Those are called questions you just don’t ask because there is just no reasonable answers to (though the fact there’s only ONE girl in the entire school does bug me alot).

Yeah bishies are all that’s enjoyable.
OH GOD THE GRAMMAR…I was like, “WHUT?” I liked the ED song though…

    • Ness says:

Don’t forget, the parents looks the same age as the students and the teacher looks younger than the students hah!

  4. Overcooled says:

I’m going to download this and just listen to the audio track. I’m already shuddering at the thought of forcing myself to watch this for the sake of voice actors.

Nice review, ladies (lol everyone’s name colours are pink and purple) now I know what to expect XD

    • Hoshi says:

~Yes just listen to the gorgeous voice actors’ voice hahaha.

LOL I noticed the pink and purple colors too X’D I was like, “PFFFF PERFECT.”

  5. Amutofan123 says:

The story was rather boring to me. I’m still watching it for all the bishies and voice actors though.

    • Hoshi says:

~It really was, but I’m hoping it at least gets interesting, or someone else’s story gets a least a bit interesting. And yes, same here.

  6. Mimiko ♥ says:

Um, I’m fan of the game so this was something I really look forward to. The story was bland and the animation was disappointing but that was it. I still overall enjoys the anime even though I hated almost everything in there. Yet, this is just first episode so I couldn’t say much, after all, cause this is DEEN.

Even if it’s turn out terrible, I’ll still watch this. (I can’t even believe I took my time to review the anime too XD) The good thing in the anime that I liked is the seiyuu, the main girl do look pretty and the ED theme. So, I look forwards to the other arcs though ~

  7. Gunny says:

    Just watching for Pisces’s sake.

  8. wonton jr. says:

most of the subjects sound as though you wouldn’t really need to use them in real life haha I’ll only watch this for the bishies. And the awesome voice actors

  9. Dan-go says:

    moe otanashi

  10. Namika says:

I was fairly disappointed, because instead of a full episode, we got a 10-minute arc. T___T But anyway……. I liked it))) Well, a really worn out plot as it seems, but the art, animation, music, must I say and the cast(mainly, the cast) is amazing!!! ^^
I’m so eager to see more! *,_,*

  11. Yuzu says:

I agree that I was dissapiinted it wasn’t a full episode. It was a bit bland and I actually got so nervous wondering if everyone would drop it. To you who didn’t. YAY XD
Although I admit, everyone’s honestly KYAAAA-ing over bishies. But hopefully they’ll bring in a more interesting story for the critics!
    ((..plsplsplssssss. ))

    • Hoshi says:

~I’m too nice to drop it. I think it still has potential! xD
Seriously, but yeah I’m hoping as well that there’s going to be a more interesting story .___.

      • Yuzu says:

AHH YAY I LOVE YOU XD
and PLEASE KEEP BLOGGING ABOUT IT -shiny eyes- I CANT, SO I RELY ON YOU. XD
        and well.
        yeah.
if not, i’ll just mute it or something and stare at the bishies. xD

        • Hoshi says:

          ~Hahahaha XDDD
Well we’ll see when it comes to January ;D

          • Yuzu says:

            There is ONE slight problem.
Everytime I hear Pisces, I hear Hoshi ((from Arakawa xDD))
it is seriously driving me insane xD
Doesn’t help that the girl kinda sounds like Stella too xD

  12. bakuhasu says:

Midorikawa Hikaru had the most annoying voice in this anime…. I was soooo disappointed ALOT LIKE NINJA!!!!!

  13. Miyu says:

I’m sorry. Even though the story line didn’t impress me much so far, I still have to say that I’m looking forward to every single coming episode. xD

Maybe because I have a weakness for bishies with sad(?) love stories.

Oh well, I love the art and I think it’ll be hard to hate the main female lead ‘coz of Orikasa Fumiko. I loved Rukia & Riza so much (NOT your typical whiny i-need-you-to-save-me-‘coz-i’m-so-damn-noob girl. :D)

So basically, I think I’m going to catch all the episodes from now onwards 8D

    • Hoshi says:

~It’s all right! I’m not extremely looking forward to it, but I do want to see how this goes :3

      LOL I DO TOOO~

Yeah I’m already finding it hard to hate her because she is pretty decent, surprisingly! I thought she would be one of those whiny girls who need to be rescued all the time x’D Plus, what you said about her seiyuu playing Rukia and Riza |’D

  14. A-chan says:

Okay I agree with Ness and Captain ^^ I think I watch this anime only for seiyuu, and bishies.*it’s bad* I wanted to play the games btw ><"

    • Hoshi says:

      ~Yeah sadly same here for me as well .___.;
I REALLY want to play the game too! I know people who have played it and everything *___*

  15. Junko says:

Pretty much didn’t pay any attention to anything other than the hoard of lovely males. Stuff happened in that ‘episode’? If so, I don’t know.

It seems that otome games only get half the attention of galge anime translations. It’s kinda sad. There have been some absolutely amazing galge anime but as for guy games…

  16. Hime says:

I’m still holding out for my Jun, but if his character is terrible I think I might bail.

  17. starpowder says:

I was facepalming the entire thing but I couldn’t help but watch it. I think it’s alright to have ONE thing this season for it to be brain-numbing and just dumb.

I’m just hoping the stereotypes for each “sign” or guy to be so stereotypical that it’s just… blah. … So I’m holding out for the Virgo..
