RE:Creators – 05

Three cute girls sitting on a train is the best anime ever.

The mystery of RE:Creators continues, but thankfully one of the major mysteries is kinda solved this week? Sorta? Just kidding if anything it just gave us more questions to ask…

Hell ya! Giant robots!

Dat art and tight flight suits are tight…

Yes we finally meet the last creation Rui in this episode even though technically we met him last week? Either way we don’t know much about him besides my predictions coming true that Rui is the “comic” relief character who kinda felt like he was a combination of Asuka and Shinji? Rui did come off as being shy at first then randomly angry and pissed off really fast or is Rui in his rebellious phase? One thing is certain he might be the most “powerful” of the good team given the fact that he brought his mech over from his world or no? I suppose Gunpuku could beat him with one arm behind her back given that she is the main boss and we saw her make quick work of Celestia’s mech in the first episode. I did enjoy that silly scene with Celestia telling Rui that she would go on a date with him if he joined their team, but apparently he is only attracted to younger girls? Which is what thirteen to fifteen for him? Because Rui can’t be more than what fifteen or sixteen right? So does that make him a LOLicon or not really if the girl is two or three years younger than him? If so damn Masaaki Nakanogane has some explaining to do if he wrote that into Rui’s character bio.

Just military things

Season three of Gate looks awesome.

Nine times out of ten whenever the military in any anime gets involved in fights against supernatural beings, giant monsters or villains with crazy superpowers they usually come off as a joke, but the military in RE:Creators might actually be somewhat useful? Maybe? So how does the military play into this story? Apparently they are fully aware of the creations coming to our world from manga, anime and games but they didn’t fully understand everything until Meteora explained a few things to them like the most important fact that the whole world might be ending soon if Gunpuku isn’t stopped? Oh and the military totally knew that Meteora stole all those high tech rocket launchers that just so happen to be worth roughly one million dollars each and she took er “borrowed” six of them?! I loved how her response was simply “uh, sorry? About that” Yep I’m sure a simple sorry will create six million dollars out of thin air or maybe Meteora can just summon some money for them instead? Silly stuff aside I guess the military is making all the creations official citizens of Japan so yay for them?! I just hope the military in RE:Creators is more like the military from Gate where they actually do stuff instead of the normal trope filled anime military of hey guys let’s waste tons of ammo and resources on these high powered beings that we can’t hurt because we’re too stupid!

Gunpuku’s origins

Careful googling Gunpuku!

So one question that has plagued fans has been who is Gunpuku’s creator? Is it suicide-chan from the first episode? Is she Setsuna and how does Souta fit into all of this? Thankfully we got half of those answers this week. Most of these answers I found on various anime sites and forums. We now know Setsuna is the one that wrote Gunpuku’s story and Souta did her original base design which if you couldn’t tell were based off Setsuna’s looks because Gunpuku has the same face and eyes. Gunpuku’s real name is Altair and a few fans think her name plays into the whole Altair and Vega story which deals with constellations? Meteora mentioned something during the military meeting that Gunpuku isn’t ready to execute her grand plan yet because she is waiting for something? A few fans think the alignment of the stars is needed before she can destroy the world? Personally I think it fits, but I don’t know how much we can speculate just based off the name Altair. So where is Gunpuku from? From what I gathered she is from Altair: World Etude? we can guess that Altair: World Etude is either a webcomic, lightnovel or game started up by both Setsuna and Souta? I did see someone mention Altair: World Etude is connected to an app called Project Gutenberg? Project Gutenberg is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to “encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks”. I all like the info we got so far, but none of it really explains why Souta forgot about creating Gunpuku unless maybe his original design for her was altered so much by another person that he could no longer recognize her? I think that works way better than Souta having a case of anime amnesia. As for why Setsuna killed herself maybe her quote of “This is my new story. As I said before this is probably the last one…goodbye” might be a possible clue maybe?

Extra Creations

Come on Rui you’re missing out on that Celestia goodness!

Sooooo shipping Metora x military glasses lady <3

The next evolution in TV! Actually being in middle of the action.

Welp we figured it out at last!

Glasses are the best <3

Dat face

End thoughts

Well now most of us got our answers we wanted or did we? I know there are still a lot of unanswered questions regarding Setsuna’s death and why hasn’t Souta said a damn word to anyone that he might have helped create Gunpuku? I’m sure if he told them they might be a bit angry that he kept it hidden from them, but at this point what good would it do them to know that fact anyway? It’s already been proven that the original creators can’t simply re-write things on the fly to give or take away powers from their creations. Besides that we finally know a bit more about Gunpuku’s origins! Which is a start, but to be honest I think they could have keep that hidden for a bit longer because I kinda liked the mystery surrounding her character! Ah well I’m sure some fans would complain if they didn’t reveal it by now. Other than that stuff Rui and his mech should come in handy for future battles and the military seems to be smart this time; however I get the feeling that they might be hiding something from them but what? I’m sure a few of those military guys at the meeting see the creations as living breathing weapons they could totally exploit or go so far as to steal some of the tech powering Rui’s machine? Hopefully not!

My impression wasn’t that Souta had a hand in creating the character, just that he now realizes that Setsuna did. And maybe it was her doing that has unleashed these characters on their world, because she wrote that into the character, and that’s why she killed herself.

BTW, I sure don’t feel like I missed anything skipping ep 4. 🙂

I really loved that Nakanogane was regretting making Rui like that. That he “thought it would be interesting, but it’s really more of a pain in the butt.”

    • Foshizzel says:

Well he asked in the flashbacks if he could draw either the character or wanted to have Setsuna be his model for a drawing? If he has no connection what so ever to her creation why would he be so shocked to find out about Gunpuku’s origins? I’m still on camp Souta being involved in her creation until RE:Creators actually provides info on that.

LOL well 4 was dialog on dialog on more dialog and theories on Gunpuku’s end game.

Yeah until Rui came to life now hes hard to deal with.

      • zztop says:

Another reason he’s shocked is because of the video description’s chilling message:

        “I loved drawing pictures.
        I appreciated all the support.
        A lot happened.
It all started from a trivial thing.
This is Shimazaki Setsuna’s final work.
I doubt we will ever meet again.”

Sounds a lot like a digital suicide note.

  2. skylion says:

WTH is wrong with this dude? No sooner than they have a nice interesting scene going down, with an interesting character, doing something interesting then he goes, “This is getting to interesting, I need to stick them all in a boring interior space and have them dialogue sh*t to death…” I don’t care how much a missile costs, dude! LOL

Well, I’m only partially kidding. This guy needs to find out better ways to shoehorn in the real world stuff. I do find it interesting that he’s cross lacing this fantastic stuff with mundane stuff cause that can “ground” the weird stuff and make it more relatable, but c’mon…they already did the heavy lifting by making the characters somewhat relatable to begin with. All this dialogue is overkill.

Ellipses! Refer to that scene as if it happened off camera and move on!

    • zztop says:

Methinks Hiroe’s a bit too in love with his story, and wants to “share” all its glorious details with us.

That said, you were right about the Princess being someone’s chuuni fancreation, based on some other work called Megalosphere – The Eternal Great War.

Funny how Meteora and Altair’s situations somewhat mirror the saying that a fictional creation can still live on even though its creator has passed away – although I’m not sure if it applies for deceased creators whose works remain incomplete (like Highschool of the Dead – its author passed away from heart disease some months ago while the series was on hiatus).

      • BlackBriar says:

Methinks Hiroe’s a bit too in love with his story, and wants to “share” all its glorious details with us.

Which makes the responses to his efforts ironic because in most shows, the audience throws a huge tantrum because they feel they aren’t getting enough details.

      • skylion says:

Yeah, the dude needs to pare it back, really decide what sells the story rather than impress us with his knowledge of military expenditures. As for Princess, I was going with my gut. She feels like a very “interesting” OP character than a kid would create with their own sense of a lack of empowerment in mind.

Yeah, it was sad to hear of his passing, and Hinata Takeda also passed away recently due to a long delbilitaing illness. Ikoku Meiro no Croisée is one of my top favorite shows, and it was a lovely manga. So yeah, we hope the art outlives the artist…

        • Foshizzel says:

Why is it a problem if he wants to talk about tiny details? Yeah it does get RPG-ish with being overly descriptive but I fail to see that as a real problem?

Also so what if he loves his story it beats someone who hates their own work? Id be kinda sad to hear that some of my favorite manga/anime writers actually hate their own manga series lol

          • sonicsenryaku says:

it’s a problem because this is not a game; it’s a visual storytelling medium. It grinds the pace of the series to a halt. The author’s love for the tiny details becomes a problem because then the other important factors that make a good narrative arent being given as much attention as they should; it’s as simple as that. An author should know how to inform the viewer without breaking immersion. An author should be aware of how to use dialogue to reveal things about characters and setting without just telling you outright about its world. This should be mixed with good visual storytelling; something re:creators clearly hasnt heard about. And as i mentioned last week, if you are going to commit the sin of pulling your audience through exposition hell, at least make it somewhat entertaining to sit through. Monogatari is a show riddled with exposition and dialogue problems, and while i dont think its visual execution always lands (sometimes it does), it at least understands that it has to try to do something with its visual presentation to keep audiences entertained. It’s not that the monogatari series gets a free pass because for me it doesnt (although kizumongatari was a step in the right direction); but i am giving it credit for at least understanding something as fundamental as visual intrigue.

The problem is not that hiroe loves his story; it’s that he does not know how to regulate how he delivers his story. One may say he loves it too much and as we all know, too much of a good thing can easily become a bad thing.

            • skylion says:

Yeah, the tiny details aren’t the problem. The execution is the problem. How it’s presented is the problem.

          • skylion says:

The problem is that it slows down characterization and plot, without really adding anything. Great, the dude has flipped the script and made the military a going concern instead of some chump. Show that! Don’t talk it into the ground! He’s capable of doing both, and he’s just fine when he shows and doesn’t tell. Hell, the first episode just showing them shopping in a convini did more to ground and open the two characters up than anything else he did….that’s what hooked me on this series, not esoteric military/industrial meetings or “this is my thesis statement on characters and story, aren’t I smart to put it in the words of my own characters, derp!”

            • sonicsenryaku says:

Yoooo; im so glad you mentioned the first ep because that episode’s direction demonstrated some sort of understand on how to use its small details and visuals to great effect and i’ve felt the difference in quality from the episodes following the premiere, I kid you not when i say that every episode after that has been a significant step down from that episode’s quality. Like, what happened after that first ep? did the staff get hit with a nuerolizer from men in black and forget what they did???

            • skylion says:

Never underestimate grounding fantastic characters in normal situations, it gives them so much push. We can more readily accept the type of groove the show is on if we relate to them, even a little bit.

            • Foshizzel says:

@Sky/Sonic: Damn its only the 5th ep and you two are taking everything RE:Creators is doing and ripping it apart like RE:Creators killed your dog or something but did you think that maybe the anime studio is the one to blame? They could be adapting his work the wrong way or getting him to fill in time?

With all these complaints on the “story” and “writing” is there anything you two actually like? If you already got issues with how RE:Creators flows why continue watching or is it the enjoyment of shitting on it the drive? Personally I don’t care cause hey I’ve tore apart lots of anime in my day so fair is fair I guess.

            • skylion says:

I can only speak for myself. I like the show, or I would have swanned off long ago. The things it does well, it does very well. But I will call out the writing and the story for being over-indulgent and pretentious. The level of characterization it has in other scenes is quite nice and is incredibly followable and interesting. It’s overall idea is a bit of a copypasta from something like the Fate franchise, but I think they put a great spin on it, and make it their own.

My complaints come in where scenes go on to long or over explain a situation; such as they did with Celestia in the second ep and with Meteora in the fourth. None of the ideas are all that complicated nor is any of the writing over the head of the average audience member; this isn’t masterpiece theater. But that doesn’t stop me from calling out what I see as padding or an attempt by the author to put on a smart pretense.

This is how I watch shows. I am unapologetic about it as anyone that watches things the way they want to.

Yes, you have torn apart shows. It’s your turn in the chair! LOL

edit: Also, I have to give some cheer for the performances. Excellent voice work, during the drudgery of the fourth episode, the cheerfulness and sweet melancholy of Meteora’s VA made it bearable.

            • sonicsenryaku says:

why does it matter whether it’s hiroe’s fault or the studio’s fault? the fact still remains that re:creators is clunky as hell. This aint something like grimoire of zero where its flaws are just blemishes on its overall construction. Re:creators violates important notions of storytelling structure. Whether 5 eps in or not, that’s irrelevant. There are things i like about re:creators which is why i stick around. Character designs are pretty nice and the premise is intriguing enough. It’s just that every time the narrative has a chance to do something cool with or intelligent with its premise, it only dances around the idea. Or whenever the show has the chance to execute something competently, it takes the shallow, uninspired route. This show has potential to deliver some really fun, amicable characters. It has the potential to create intrigue that’s not just based on “not knowing the whole story” but through interesting characterization. However re:creators in its 5 eps has squandered that. Im not condemning the anime to hell. Trust me, that would be for anime worse than this. Im just pointing out some glaring flaws.

For me, re:creators has been just dragging its feet. Again, i like some of the visual aesthetics; i think the story has an interesting premise and some potential character intricacies but aside from ep 1, the series has been straddling more on the “miss” side of things rather than hitting those wonderful story beats that it could. It sounds to me like your apologizing for glaring flaws; asking why such and such should matter when it is clear why they should. But hey that’s perfectly fine; if they dont bother you then that’s cool. I think the show’s average so far; it’s a 5 out of 10 for me. There’s always the potential the story can smooth itself out over its 22 ep run so things are subject to change; and since im still intrigued by the premise, i have all the motivation i need to stick around as im sure skylion is sticking around because the conceit of the series still tickles his fancy

            • sonicsenryaku says:

              Dammit spammy

            • Foshizzel says:

I guess we’re just watching RE:Creators differently? You two see flaws in how things are written/presented while I’m enjoying everything so far, but to each their own I guess.

    • Random Anon says:

I don’t find the dialogues in this episode boring at all, the episode feels very short for me.

IMO if they skipped those governments scenes this episode, there will probably be different types of complainants from another type of people.

      • Foshizzel says:

Same…idk why people gush over monogatari for days vs something like this suddenly it’s an issue? Because its dialog heavy? And the instant defense of monogatari is always “but monogatari has good visuals” ok? I guess that makes it instantly AMAZING? That said is the dialog in RE:Creators great? Nope there are plenty of things we don’t really need to know, but they are building things up and how else are they gonna fill in the time for 22 episodes? They can’t be swinging weapons around every episode.

      • sonicsenryaku says:

complaint will always exist about a series regardless of how good it is; however, one should still aim to deliver their series in the best way possible. Anime is not meant to be a novel; What works in one medium does not work in another

    • Foshizzel says:

If something happens “off screen” for plot reasons like the creators/creations meeting the military team in this episode for example if it was all cut people would bitch! Because I see something Like episode 8 hits and out of nowhere the military shows up guns blazing and helps the creations vs Gunpuku suddenly you can bet money everyone is either gonna laugh or be straight up confused if you cut that scene out.

      • skylion says:

There is “off screen” with clues and allusions to it happening, and then there is being dumb. I WAS SUGGESTING THE FIRST ONE! LOL

        • Foshizzel says:

Well your use of “off screen” made me think you rather have that whole military conference removed in favor of fighting or what more random eating scenes? I just fail to see why mentioning how much a missile costs really pulls you out of a series? I didn’t really mind -shrug-

          • skylion says:

As I said above. I found the whole military conference to be indulgent on the writer’s part. It didn’t take me out of the series, just makes me pause in a place that I felt that I shouldn’t.

  3. BlackBriar says:

Here’s some info for anyone still hazy on Gunpuku/Altair’s origins:

Article: All the Info on Re:Creators‘ Villain You Probably Missed

Frankly, “Altair” is an awkward choice for me. That’s not a name one usually hears. I’ve heard it once because that’s the name of the Assassin’s Creed game franchise’s first ancestral protagonist Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, an initially disgraced Assassin working to redeem himself during the Third Crusade historical period.

  4. zztop says:

Rui is the “comic” relief character who kinda felt like he was a combination of Asuka and Shinji?

In the post-ep interview, Hiroe said Rui’s personality is a combination of characters from major mecha series, such as Evangelion’s Shinji.

But the military in RE:Creators might actually be somewhat useful?

Hiroe purposely depicted the government as competent and reasonable because he was tired of the cliche that people in power become useless morons in crisis fiction.

    Bonus fact – Rui’s mech is 55m tall. Celestia’s was only 17m.

    • skylion says:

Hiroe purposely depicted the government as competent and reasonable because he was tired of the cliche that people in power become useless morons in crisis fiction.

The cheap version of why most military forces are incompetent in stories is two fold 1) author didn’t do research for whatever reason 2) the assumption that a military force is strong, so all you have to do is show the protagonists are “stronger” by having them defeat the menace/surviving the military force, and you have a “very strong” character.

So for all that, I’m happy they aren’t duds, now if only they were important to the overall story….

      • zztop says:

There’s also the reason of the writing wanting to generate cheap Drama by having the loutish politician/police chief/authority person stonewalling the hero’s efforts…

There’s still 17 episodes left for the show to prove its worth. I’ve kinda enjoyed the exposition so far but then I’m masochist for dialogue driven stuff so…

    • Foshizzel says:

LOL nice! Yeah Rui does give off the vibe of a few mecha pilots from anime.

Wow so Celestia’s is super tiny! I wonder if Rui’s series is under the umbrella of super robots like Gurren Lagann and so on? I hope we get to see his mech fight sometime.

Of course, those kind of scenes with a big panel of guys who are so important that they need name plates but never say anything make me think of this scene. Harumph!
