First Impressions – Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

Love it or hate it Naruto will always be a thing, but I will go ahead and say that I never really got deeply invested in the world of Naruto or Naruto Shippuden besides watching some non filler arcs here and just about all of the movies; however with Boruto I assume you don’t really need to know every tiny detail about the original series? That and most of us who know the cast just have one question? What two characters from the original hooked up and had ninja children of their own?! I guess we’re going to find out soon.

When I heard the announcement that Boruto was coming out I jumped on the manga train quickly, but after a few chapters I got flashbacks of the original series which led me to ask is this technically a reboot/remix? Is this going to follow the same story beats as the original? Because I know we’re going to get a new The Chuunin Exams, ninja training stuff, team building, rival characters and the eventual reveal of the big bad boss for the main characters to fight! Then again those are elements found in every Shounen series ever created. I will praise the team behind Boruto for not taking the easy route by turning the Boruto movie into episodes giving the fans that watched it nothing to look forward to which is what Toei did with their two Dragon Ball Super movies! Yeah I guess they just wanted extra sales? Who knows.

Just in case it wasn’t blatantly obvious that Hinata and Naruto got married and had two kids! You can even catch their wedding in the final Naruto Shippuden episode if you’re curious about seeing that. Does anyone else remember how Twitter exploded when fans learned Hinata and Naruto got together instead of Sakura and Naruto? I recall a similar thing happened when Bleach fans learned that Ichigo and Orihime hooked up instead of Ichigo and Rukia? Yeah the fans of “romance” in shounen series are all kinds of CRAZY! Sure I’ll admit I do get that way too sometimes when two characters I like don’t get together; however I don’t threaten the original creator like some of those diehard fans did on Twitter.
I just hope Sarada is actually useful unlike her mom back in the day.
Besides Boruto’s parents I guess you can put two and two together and figure out who Sakura got with right? I did find it kinda funny that Sakura’s daughter ACTS just like her mom, but I guess that makes for easier writing? I’m glad that Boruto on the other hand doesn’t act anything like his dad or does he? They do share a similar attitude towards authority which is fine because it would be odd if Boruto was a Sasuke type given how his dad acted back in the day. Also Boruto has “magic ninja” eyes from Hinata’s side of the family, but I don’t think he has any of the nine tails powers? Who am I kidding he probably does because why not? Oh I almost forgot one key fact! Boruto kinda hates his dad? Yeah he’s got that whole “OMG daddy isn’t home because he works too much which means he doesn’t love his kids” thing which I guess is going to be used later if and when Naruto sacrifices himself to save his kids or probably used as a life lesson to teach kids to appreciate their parents and what they do for their children? Whatever they do I’m sure it will give everyone warm feels when Naruto and Boruto hug it out later.

Ah yes new friends! Now Boruto gained more shounen power.
As for the story elements Boruto is lazy, hates his dad, knows some basic ninjutsu ie shadow clones nothing super serious happened besides the odd shadow monster thing that attached itself to Denki? I’m assuming that has something to do with the opening bit with future Boruto fighting some other dude? I hope that mystery guy doesn’t turn out to be Denki even though that would be kinda awesome just to see what causes their friendship to split, but I don’t think that is going to happen. I did love how Boruto and Denki worked together to successfully stop that runaway train car and by success I mean their horrible failed attempt to stop it by making crash into the Hokage Rock? Yeah that was quite the sight, but hey you can’t blame Boruto for not wanting to have a dramatic entrance on the first day of ninja school.

Episode two was out before I could get this first impressions post out, but nothing amazing happened besides the “bully” Iwabe picking on Denki and claiming that Boruto was riding on Naruto’s coat tails because he is the Hokage which allowed him to get away with the traincar incident of the previous episode. That whole bit ticked me off! Because A Boruto doesn’t like his dad all that much right now and B it was tossed in there to cause some random ass drama; however with the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP things were solved! Then again I think through fighting Boruto Iwabe learned a lesson? Who knows? The only thing I got from that episode was being a bully is un-cool. Also cameo appearances by Metal Lee aka Rock Lee’s kid and Inojin who is the son of Ino and Sai of all people? Wow I guess it must have been slim pickings for Ino after all the cool dudes were taken huh? Anyway next week starts the official ninja training arc! Wooooo!

End thoughts
This was a decent introduction to the new Naruto series even though I have issues with it being a copy of the original, but who knows maybe it will surprise us by NOT following the same footsteps as the old series? I like Boruto so far he does make for an interesting main character and I can’t wait to see what hijinks he gets himself into! Also I hope Himawari gets to do some stuff because she is a ball of anger if you saw her “awakening” in the Boruto movie?! Dayum she can be quite scary! So are you going to watch this or are you not on board the shounen train?
