First Impression – Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai [NSFW]

Belial wins for most ridiculous outfit in a close field

winter15-highw So I’ll take another break from listening to as many all-woman J-rock groups as possible (or trying to decide which member of Gacharic Spin I like better, F-Chopper Koga or Hana), and get another of these First Impressions out of the way. This time it’s Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai. But this Seven Deadly Sins is nothing like the other Seven Deadly Sins that we saw a few years ago.

Fall from Grace

Maria and Lucifer’s first meeting

The premise of this series is a revision of the Heaven / Hell myth, this time with Lucifer cast out of heaven down to hell by way of Earth. After a brief meeting with Maria Totsuka, she (yeah, everyone in this show is presenting as a woman) continues down to hell where the first person she meets is wannabe-Mortal Sin Leviathan, who has a super-crush on Lucifer and tries to ingratiate herself as much as possible. Which, given Lucifer’s disinterest, isn’t particularly much.

This is the aesthetic of Sin…

We then get the part where Lucifer introduces herself to the actual Mortal Sins, which includes boasting how she’s better than everyone else and is going to be running the show, and the others boasting about how she’s not. After a bit of a battle, Lucifer ends up losing to Belial, but the result is that her connection to heaven is severed and now she’s heading back to Earth, for… a reason that’s not really stated.

Levi knows where she wants to be

Going to Find Something

Ladylike poses rule the day

So the second episode gets us to what seems like more of a story arc, as Lucifer has collected Maria, and is now luxuriating as she waits to get signs about where she has to go to… do something. This show is not really big on specific plot points (it’s just big on those other plots and points). But while they’re figuring it out, Levi is getting more and more frustrated that Maria, the one who is not cooperative and cries all the time, gets more attention from Lucifer than she does, leading to a lot of jealousy, especially when Lucifer goes out for a while, giving her what she thinks is a chance for revenge. It doesn’t work out that well for Levi, tho, as she’s defeated by Maria’s earnestness.

Overall Thoughts

Cut it out

This show actually feels like a step up in quality for TNK, which is more famous recently for the High School DxD series, and infamous for shows like Kenzen Robo Daimidaler and Seireitsukai no Blade Dance (which gave me a perfect chance to link that KN33SOXX video again, but I won’t). As I said, there’s not a lot of plot yet, but that’s not really a bad thing. This show is a lot more about atmosphere and attitude, and is actually fairly brutal in its treatment of the characters, what with the beatdowns that the demon lords give each other, and Levi’s water-tentacle torture of Maria.

Don’t wear clothes in the pool

Just cause we needed a closeup of Belial’s outfit

But it doesn’t really go so far as to make the show unwatchable. It’s certainly not anything to the degree of Daughters of Mnemosyne or even Freezing. So far there’s been at least some reasoning for what they’re doing, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing that the show doesn’t lay out the whole plot in the first two episodes. So we’ll see how the show develops and hope it can keep it on the good side of going too far.

The quality of design and animation is a cut above, but the story seems really lacking – which is saying something?

I mean, I don’t expect Shakespeare’s Jacobean Plays in the Globe, but I don’t feel we even got Bucky’s Bar and Grill Dinner Theatre, am I right? Well, actually the fanservice would be right at home at Bucky’s…you know they put their cocktails in real hollowed out coconuts, with TWO paper umbrellas? Talk about class!

But this oddball collection of themed moments is lacking. I’m hoping the can find the skeleton of something to hand the meat on, and I don’t know f Hell’s Clique is it…

Yeah, so far it’s been trading on atmosphere and attitude, and I think that’s ok (not great, but ok) for two episodes. And a story like this doesn’t really need a lot of story to keep it together, just enough to keep them moving around and not just sitting around in the pool time after time, or with Belial monologuing (she’s not very interesting). So they kinda get a “ok, that hasn’t been too bad, let’s get to what you’re going to do” grade from me.

I would say that it’s certainly better than fantasy shows that load you up with two episodes stuffed full of detailed exposition and setting that’s just as meaningless as all of this posing and attitude, but way more boring. I’ll also admit that if this was bishounen posing, *I* wouldn’t be as forgiving, even if other people find a huge big story in it (like with ACCA).

Yes, there is no need building an entire two story house, if you only plan on living in one room, or two. Loto of fantasy/sci-fi shows load you up with details, and then hardly ever get a single mention on down the line.

This was crazy! I’m still confused as to what the real “plot” is besides Lucifer wanting to take over hell? Also I scratched my head because we got Lucifer and Saten at the same time? I thought those two were one in the same? Lol whatever the case i’m still gonna watch haha

I want more of Beelzebub aka gluttony she seemed to be the fun character.

I don’t like unicorn horns on people, so she’s not my favorite (I think I’m thinking of the right character).

It’s their story, they can have the characters be who they want. I don’t know that it’s exactly christian canon to associate minions of hell with specific mortal sins, either.

There isn’t a ‘real’ plot yet, hopefully they’ll get to one soon. Maybe they’ll find it in a cookie jar.
