Boku no Hero Academia – 02

Powerful stuff this week!

winter15-foshWelcome back to another Boku no Hero Academia on Metanorn! Yes this is one of the few series I plan on covering this season because I love the manga and I think Bones is actually doing a decent job adapting things for the anime, but of course we shall see how long that lasts before fans start complaining about them skipping things…

Fight on Midoriya!

The true form of All Might…

This week picked up right after Midoriya was saved by All Might and the two of them have a really short chat, but not before All Might reveals the truth about his powers. We now know years ago he took a huge hit from a villain named sensei which resulted in a time limit being placed on his quirk called “All for One” and once he reaches that time limit he simply turns into a super skinny dude! I guess All Might is a mixture of Captain America and the Hulk? Although All Might doesn’t have to be angry to transform. After learning the truth about his favorite hero All Might basically tells Midoriya that he can’t become a hero without a quirk and he should think about being a cop if he wants to save people? For Midoriya it’s quite hard to hear coming from somebody you looked up too, but at the same time All Might is doing the right thing by not sugar coating the truth and at the same time protecting him from danger! Still it’s great that Midoriya knows he has to face reality and I’m really glad that was somewhat mature about it and didn’t simply run home to cry about it.

Not the smartest idea, but Midoriya’s heart is in the right place.

As for the rest of the episode it included a bit with Katsuki being taken hostage by that nasty slime villain, but even when the same set of heroes arrived from the first episode none of them had the right quirk to fight the slime dude with? That is probably one of the downfalls of being a hero in this universe! If you’re power is water based then you are practially limited to fighting people with fire based powers! So I guess if you’re lucky to have powers that can be used in any situation you can be more useful. I know out of all the characters in the series most of them have no choice but to team up with others because their powers are kind of weak by themselves, but still it is a bit dumb that none of those guys could help Katsuki? Even if they combined their powers? Instead Midoriya had to run in like an idiot and show all of them up? Not that he would have magically saved his “friend” yeah we can tell Katsuki and Midoriya are never ever going to become close friends! Hell even after saving Katsuki’s life he took that selfless act more like an insult, but I think it’s just classic pride getting in the way or he just hates owing people favors? Anyway even though Katsuki will never say thank you I loved that scene with Midortiya running towards danger without having any powers which showed All Might that maybe he was wrong about this kid and that he does have what it takes to become a hero? All Might clearly sees some kind of potential in him and I’m glad that he’s gonna give the kid a shot, but it’s going to take a LOT of work! So expect some kind of training next week or a possible training montage to speed things up.

End Thoughts

Another great episode this week! I like the moments between All Might and Midoriya on the rooftop and especially the near the end with All Might deciding to help the kid out, but like I said it’s gonna take a while! That and props to Daiki Yamashita for doing such a good job on the emotional bits this week too because there were a lot! Also it appears that Bones is combining two to three chapters per episode to push things along and that seems to be working really, but I’m sure they are cutting some dialog and scenes here and there? Either way I’m quite pleased with the anime so far and I have seen some manga readers say the anime adaptation is leaps and bounds better than the manga? To that I shrug my shoulders because honestly I think both are great; however the anime has the clear advantage of animation, music and voices work so of course it’s gonna be better while the manga has to be slower in order to tell a story…anyway what did you like this week? I can’t wait to see the next episode because were finally gonna meet Ochako Uraraka and possibly the rest?! Maybe frog girl too?!

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! All Might is a true hero. Despite his grave injuries he continues to fight evil when most would retire. And he admits that he feels fear, yet he fights anyway. There are more and better reasons for Midoriya to worship All Might than his strength and his being the greatest hero.

Looks like I’m going to stick with this show for now despite shounen not being one of my favorite genres. It has some real depth to it.

    • Foshizzel says:

All Might is quite the character and a lot of people look up to him, but Midoriya has the extra benefit of knowing his secret and he now knows All Might is pushing himself every day so it provides huge motivation for Midoriya to see his favorite hero giving his all.

Cool! Yeah this series is shounen on the outside, but honestly the core is the characters and the emotional stuff <3

“To be a true hero, kid, is a dying art.
Like painting a masterpiece, it’s a work of heart.
    It takes more than sinew,
Comes down to what’s in you.
You have to continue to grow!”

Last week, I compared All might to both Superman and Cap. America. Yet now that we know more about him, I have to say that he reminds me the most of Steve Rogers. The only difference being that he goes back and forth between his scrawny and his buff form. And just like Cap, All Might is a hero when he’s pathetic looking as when he’s strong.

Because a hero is a hero before they get the powers. The powers can indeed help and I’m glad that All Might went into the realistic dangers faced by heroes, and he’s living proof of the consequences. And yet he will fight on, because that is what a hero does. Any mook can have superpowers, a villain has a qwerk. A hero has to deal with the spirit of the person, whether they are weak or strong, small or big.

Midorya is indeed a hero. Bakugo is too, he’s just one of those diamonds in the rough. He needs so rough polishing, and I think that he’ll shine too. He’s a different kind of hero compared to Izuku, but there is definite potential there.

I loved this episode, and I’m in love with this series. It’s amazing what animation and a good soundtrack can do. I almost cried there at the end. I wanted to give little Izuku a hug. 🙂

    • Foshizzel says:

Hahaha yeah All Might is more Cap, but hes also a mixture of a bunch of different heroes! I should look up what characters inspired his creation…

True that! I love that about All Might and a few of the later characters that aren’t all powerful and have real fears which is kinda rare in the world of superheroes.

Bakugo is a interesting guy, but boy is he full of hate and anger! If this was a starwars series he would be full on sith in no time! Course like you said he just needs to be polished; however part of me really loves the fact that he’s a ball of rage.

I know I cried! Just seeing Izuku cry tears of joy was so heartwarming and yes he does need a hug <3

      • IreneSharda says:

Well, there are several shounen characters like Bakago that are bad boys that you love just as they are. Hiei and Killua are too that immediately come to my mind.

I’ll be interested to Bakago grow, and if he still must be a jerk, at least not one towards our hero.

        • BlackBriar says:

You forgot to mention DBZ’s Vegeta. Like Yu Yu Hakusho’s Hiei, he was a special case as well.

        • Foshizzel says:

@Irene: Yeah same they always are more interesting to watch! Killua is a great example.

@BB: Yeah Vegeta of dbz is the classic bad dude even when he becomes “good” he still turns evil like in the Majin saga LOL and agreed Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho would be a close second.

The source manga tankoubons contain a lot of sidenotes and sketches by Horikoushi Kohei. He says as a child, he always hated the empty pages inside the tankoubon volume of a manga because he didn’t like paying for content-less pages.

So now, he’s made it his mission to fill up all those empty pages with related notes and stuff to ensure people who buy the Academia manga can get their money’s worth of content.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I’ve noticed that when reading the manga! A lot of the end pages are bios of certain characters from the series which is cool because it adds another layer of fun.

  4. skylion says:

I think All Might has a bit of “Colossus from Deadpool” about him. He’s a stand up hero for sure, but he emphasizes those “moments” that being a hero really counts; and that’s it OK to be afraid. That’s one heck of a lesson for Midoriya to learn, and it’ll take time. So far they’re getting everything about superheroes right. Take note Warner Bros.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah All Might is quite the character who’s willing to do whatever it takes to win and it’s rare to see a hero like him who’s scared which rubs off on Midoriya, but it’s good that he learns that lesson now instead of later when it’s too late.

  5. BlackBriar says:

What a slap of reality Izuku had before him seeing All Might in his unbelievably vulnerable state. Most anybody else would’ve been disillusioned after a sight like that but few have the constitution not to let it deter them.

All Might is good guy granting Izuku his dream. Also, it’s easy to see why he tried to dissuade him before. He didn’t want his words to be responsible for an innocent to end up with a premature death. An action any responsible person would take, regardless of it being harsh or not. But in the end, both helped each other out.

    • Foshizzel says:

I know right? Most people would have laughed or ran away after seeing the greatest hero looking like some scrawny old man, but good on Izuku for not doing any of that besides screaming in shock.

Right All Might was doing him a favor by telling him the truth even though it was harsh it was something he had to hear, but yeah like you said in the end their chance meeting helped both of them.
