Welcome back! This week is a jam packed post for MetaFAP since the final two episodes of ToLove-Ru Darkness have been released and they were great and all, but it’s also sad that the ecchi adventure is over for now! At least until a batch of OVA content gets released.

Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst – 04
Maria’s mom is the best mom ever.
The adventures of Basara and his magical harem continues! This time we travel to the demon world because the human world is boring and the animation team wants to draw some new backgrounds I think? Just kidding it was mostly about Ramusas aka Mio’s uncle needing her demon magic? Then again the plan was revealed at the end to extract her demon magic from her body, but the process apparently has never been attempted before so nobody knows what will actually happen to Mio? I would guess killing her in the process of something like that? Also Ramusas doesn’t really care all that much about Mio herself, so you can bet money that Basara will probably have no choice but to fight Ramusas in order to protect Mio. Other than the plot heavy stuff we had some bits with Maria being “punished” by her sister for all the bad stuff she did in the previous season, but Basara punished her himself? Yeah sure I guess whatever they can do to make those “bonds” stronger I guess? That and Kurumi wandered in and was punished too? For what? I have no idea! I guess wrong place wrong time? Not that she was complaining about it…I swear during those scenes I was waiting for the others girls to wander into that room one after another to get some sort of punishment from Basara? That would have been kinda funny to see; however the scenes with Kurumi and Maria was enough for me. Aside from the spanking scenes we also got some stuff with Zest if you remember her from season one? She is now a maid at Mio’s castle and has been given a second chance at life and I am waiting for the moment when she becomes Basara’s next sexual servant because I know it happens with her soon! Until then I’m curious to see what Basara plans on doing with this whole Ramusas/Mio problem.

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid – 04 [NSFW]
These two are crazy overpowered.
Yay more boob eater NOT coming at you! This week followed the continuation of Mirei and Mamori’s fight with Charlotte and Kasumi well more like Lady J and Rayne who also have the extra bonus of transforming into motorcycle mode and weapon mode?! That was kind of a surprise! I mean sure we know about the girls turning into guns and swords, but vehicles as well?! That made me think what if all the cars and trucks on the island were people? Just kidding, but either way we did learn that Lady J and Rayne are both Liberators and Extars which makes them special and the fact that they seem to have found a way off the island? I wonder if they just turn into a submarine or boat as a pair? Anyway while those two took up most of the episode the second half followed Mamori falling in love with Akira who gain claims to be the only male on the island; however those lips and eyelashes are not fooling me! Akira is totally a chick and characters like Kasumi are keeping it a secret? Not that I care because if it really is a guy then sure why not? Also Mamori is soooooo in love with Akira that she wandered off in the woods to take care of some personal things just in time to have Mirei save the day and kick ass! Not before she was attacked and molested by a bunch of rock dudes in her mind and she mentioned something about going through worse events? Wow it seems that Mirei has a lot of dark secrets from her past or trauma that she rather not talk about. Finally one last question, who was Kasumi talking to at the end of the episode? Her ex-partner or maybe a sibling that she is keeping hidden or possibly someone Akira is protecting since we saw Kasumi and Akira together this week? I hope we learn more about that next time.

ToLove-Ru Darkness – 13 – 14 [END]
I will miss Darkness Yami! She was awesome.
Like I said at the start ToLove-Ru Darkness 2nd has come to an official end and these two episodes followed all of Darkness being perverted and having good time until Lala jumped into the mix to save Rito and wow I kinda forgot that Lala could fight! The last time I can remember seeing her fight was in the first season of ToLove-Ru and parts of Motto ToLove-Ru; however fighting for her requires the use of energy blasts from her tail which we have seen Momo and Nana do before and for the Deviluke race expelling large amounts of energy effects your body which explains why her father is so tiny on some of the past seasons, but with Lala’s fight against Darkness it made her turn back into a LOLi since she used a lot of energy! Yeah that part was kind of funny, but I saw as a dumb reason for the character artist to draw Lala as a LOLi instead of her busty self. Either way as a manga reader I know for a fact that she doesn’t keep that form for long so don’t get used to seeing Lala like that forever! That and there is already enough kid types aka flat girls in ToLoveRu that we don’t need anymore… anyway with episode fourteen I laughed when Momo and Nana figured out how Rito could defeat Darkness by having him go full on pervert mode to help Yami return to her old self? Sure why not? Fight fire with fire and all that and through the power of ecchi Rito managed to save the town. Good job putting those dumb powers to good use and afterwards it was really cute to see Yami try her best to thank Rito for stopping her even though that fell apart fast with Rito screwing things up once again.
So long! Thanks for the fun.
Overall ToLove-Ru Darkness 2nd was a ton of fun to follow every week even though when a season wraps up it leaves me asking what else can they do next? How in the world can they keep this series fresh and interesting with every passing chapter and episode? I guess you just gotta think more perverted and dream up some super crazy what if scenario with one of Lala’s inventions or one of Momo’s sexy plans? So yeah I don’t ever see the series coming to an end even if Rito manages to marry Haruna or Lala or go through with Momo’s harem plan. I have my fingers crossed for a ToLove-Ru Darkness 3rd or give us another batch of uncensored OVA material which might include a surprise visit from Lala’s mother? I know the manga just wrapped up Nemesis’s story once and for all so I wonder who or what is the next big threat in the Tolove-ru universe.

Well, every harem needs a focus, but with the last episode we got the distractions. While Karen and Hakua are both good characters, I think the fashion they were introduced – both secondary in time and in terms of character tropes – tells us what their place in the pecking order is. So with that, we get right back into the two main contenders. |
Aitsu or The Tea Party Indecent
When you get right down to it…
Reiko started it all off by over-reacting to the girl’s gossip, and that left her feeling depressed. There’s nothing really wrong with that, in a nutshell, but you would think she could just apologize, change the subject and move on. But she’s a sensitive girl, the possibility that the young man she’s fallen for is out and about with someone else, and that has spun her out. That’s the facet of her personality you have to go with, or else the entire thing crumbles into so much forced plot. If you can accept that, then the rest of the story moves on as it should.
…these two aren’t that different…
Speaking of sensitive, Aika is her own bowl of fruit. But she’s “a hell of a girl” in that she wants other’s to be happy. That’s the other speed bump to the plot. You can either accept that she has this facet of her personality, and in that light it is a reasonable clash with her shyness. Another facet to go with or the other part of the plot folds up and crumbles. She’s in a tough spot no matter what course she took. The gossip that really started it all does rather cast her in a familiar light with Kimito so much she’s unable to speak up about it, and still relies on him . This is one of the bits I like about her character that’s present in the manga and actually came through quite well. She’s quiet, but she’s paying attention and is caught up in her own turmoil.

So why is she a hell of a girl? Well this is another facet you have to accept or else it all falls down. Why did Reiko balk? Well, I can imagine the walls of propriety these girls have built around them, that probably has something to do with needing to go to greater lengths to apologize, that dovetails into her feelings she has for Kimito. It’s not just high society that has that, the rest of us do as well. We are more than capable of doubling down when in the wrong. Pigheadedness knows no exclusive class (or any other division you could care to name). So yeah, this was a job for a commoner; cause we can also apologize just as readily. Yeah, wonky, I know…but it all fits rather well. It makes Akia a hell of a girl for giving up her own opportunity for a friend; maybe she even realizes that the plan she conceived wouldn’t work for her in the long run…silly plan that it was…
I think we all prefer Kimito’s “outsider perspective” more…
As for the toss up both Aika and Reiko got into? Well, as it played out they were both being very unreasonable, at least from the outside. That, I think is the crux of the situation. Aika’s backstory pretty much sounds like she got divorced from this society in some way, yetis still attached. She assumes everyone is going to look down on her. Reiko really wouldn’t do that, as she has some empathy, but she is resentful that Aika’s own empathy falls short. It looks like they have a past worth exploring. With Kimito in the thick of it, for better or for worse. For the future, these two are only going to see each other as thieving cats.

You know, for the past three weeks, I wasn’t happy with this show, but I think this episode turned it around just enough. I have to admit, upon first viewing it, I walked away thinking it of the same quality as before. But in trying to figure out where all the parts fit while watching a second time, they all just fell into place. Now, I will grant that some of the places they fall could have had a better fit. They could have given these moments a bit more explanation and maybe a bit more time to explore. Let’s see if they can even things out a bit more as the show goes on.

Shomin: I think you’ve got some cheap rose-colored glasses on from rewatching the show (something that definitely happens to me when I rewatch and write about some shows). And even stipulating that these character points are charm points that the show is actively trying to establish, rather than just overly optimistic dot-connecting for very poorly defined characters, the show is still a mess of abysmal comedic timing, stultifying slow scene connections, and just horrible plot points.
For instance, taking the outline of the plot here: Reiko falls out with the other girls, Kimito says to Aika “Let’s throw your party to try to help the atmosphere.” Why does Aika not join in? She was going to throw this party for the same reason, to get the other girls to like her? No? Is her *real* reason, which they haven’t said anything at all about the entire show, to just hang around with Kimito? Or to take all the credit for the party herself? But instead she completely divorces herself from it? Why? She can’t share a party with Reiko? Reiko would be MORE than happy to give her credit for planning, at least as far as we’ve seen. But instead they hide Aika’s involvement entirely, even from Reiko.
My point is that we can imagine a whole lot of motivations for the characters that ‘fit’… because the show has been so horrible at actually defining any motivation for these characters. Sure, if we fill in the blanks we can make the show a lot better. But that’s just guessing, especially for the people who haven’t read the manga. And it’s guessing on basic, fundamental stuff that shouldn’t be guessed at. This isn’t a mystery thriller suspense show. It’s supposed to be a funny comedy. And it’s just not.

…like I said, both of them are acting quite petulant. If both have motivations that aren’t quite established yet, Aika especially, then that’s fine. We don’t know the motivation of the killer in The Perfect Insider yet, and a mystery is just as silly as a teen-age tantrum when you get down to it; to name but two genre examples.
Now, are they doing it well? Not even close. None of the scenes have any proper transition, the dialog just hangs in space half the time, and as you say, the comic timing is set to some “only right twice a day” clock. I agree, it’s pretty bad. But…the basic parts are there.

Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst – 04: I would agree with you on the human world being boring. I mean, we live in it. So it’s a nice change of scenery. 😛 Joking aside, that old guy said Ramsus claimed to be Wilbert’s brother, therefore Mio’s uncle. I wonder if that’s true or he’s deliberately instilling distrust. Then again, Ramsus’ cold behavior towards Mio just when they’ve met isn’t helping his image so far.
Not much of a punishment if it’s enjoyable? Let’s remember what species Maria is. If the reprimanding is anything along the lines of what she’s just gotten, odds are she’d find some twisted way of enjoying it. Which is why her sister Rukia is an enigma to me. For a succubus, Rukia is pretty stern. So much I have to admit not sensing a lewd aura about her whereas Maria’s saturated instead at all times and Shella appears she can go in and out at will.
Exactly! Kurumi wandered in a private matter so the end result was her partaking (the receiving end) in the punishment. Already, Basara wasn’t supposed to interfere, so Rukia dragged him in by giving him the reins. In other words, intruders won’t get off the hook.
Good to see Zest again and as expected, she’s still self-punishing for past events. Basara needs to put it in her head that she’s in the clear.

Burst: Sometimes I feel like the demon sub-plots get in the way of perfectly good naughty fun. Wouldn’t it be better if: All the Demons and Angels and Other Things just got things sorted out before the show started, or maybe even “yeah, they all died in a big battle before we came along”. Then they could just get kinky without all the worry…
Mermaid: I went from being pretty cool towards Lady Lady to huge fans. This is the type of ridiculous awesome I crave in these sorts of shows. They’re a good contrast to the two main characters’ being all hesitant to each other.
TLRD2: This was a really great way to end the series. Well, minus the censoring would have been preferred. But I have to say that the world being saved by perversion is the best possible thing to happen. We also got a rare reversal of a LOLi being aged up in Lala. I’ll miss this show, it was fun.

To Love-Ru Darkness – 13 – 14 [END]: Well, that’s one way to revert someone back to normal. Through the power of perversion! The thing is Rito being obligated to act like the principal rubbed me the wrong way as I particularly see him as an annoying, over-the-top and virtually needless character in this series.
Time to say goodbye to Darkness, which is a bummer. She was for more lively and unpredictable than the usual, prudish Yami. I would’ve loved to see more of her.
Lala sacrificed a lot, in my opinion, to save Rito. Hopefully, she doesn’t stay miniaturized for long. It doesn’t suit her. Haruna the spare already has that department covered.
Overall, Darkness 2nd was as fun as last season. So no regrets following this sequel.

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid – 04 [NSFW]: With their fascination on Mirei, no doubt we’ll be seeing Lady J and Rayne sooner rather than later. Last week had me thinking Kasumi was OP then come these two that practically make her look like a common foot soldier… And they’re simply holding back.
Lady J transforming into a motorcycle reminds me too much of Snow’s Eidolon, the Shiva sisters, from Final Fantasy XIII. I’ll bet that’s where the creators got the inspiration.
Mamori’s jumping the gun with Akira Hiragi. I mean, the first “guy” walks up and talks to her and she goes gaga, and then has a lewd fantasy about being together? (Seems the slutty part of her is easily reachable) Come on! For her sake, she better be right about Akira being a guy (I very much doubt that) or there will be some sheer disappointment.
That aside… A “Hiragi”? In this show?
