“What happened to me? I used to be….different…”
We pick up exactly where we left off last time, with Haruhi’s Big School Break Plans. Now whenever Haruhi has made plans in the past, at least in the previous incarnations, they always ended up with pretty much everyone else on the fish hook. This time around, she’s the one that does pretty much all the heavy lifting. Now granted, filling out short sections of a travel book might not seem like much, but I’m willing to bet she got into their characters to fulfill the trips “official” purpose. Not to mention making the guidebook in the first place, which was probably a copy and paste job with some fandango here and there.

But no sooner than the trip is planned, we get into the thick of it. We have Asakura riding the fence so much she might as well start advising for the enclosure business. Her guardian hen mode is working overtime when it comes to protecting Yuki-chan that she’s trying to rope Haruhi into the business; which is like the exact opposite of what we’ve come to expect with both of them. In this scene I have to point out and love the de-escalating “mistakes” Asakura needs to prevent. Annnnnd….the more things change, the more they might not change, as Kyon is late to arrive at a certain centrally located part of town, and has to pay the penalty.

For the most part the rest of the episode played out almost exactly as you would think for this type of program. But it’s a hallmark of a good show that they can do typical plots like this and put their own shine upon them. From the blind draw to determine who gets to sit next to who, to arriving way to early, to palling around here and there and just soaking in the sites….and incense from “power spots”, the gang takes the time to be themselves, and we get to bask in the warmth. I especially love Mikuru’s playing along with Yuki-chan being embarrassed about picking a love charm. She still on the ditzy side this time around, but she still has more depth than she lets on.

Any takers on why Kyon’s bag is so heavy. Only even money…cause, c’mon…that’s easy…
We can take this one short but sweet. They managed to cut a few scenes from the manga, but it was mostly stuff to fill in some time with Koizumi and Tsuruya to make the trip a bit more even between the characters. A lot more is coming up next episode, and by a lot I mean….well a great deal that matches the pacing of the show so far. They are at about chapter 21 of nearly 41 or so, but I think they will chew through a bunch of chapters pretty fast, as they are breezily paced. I don’t make a habit of talking much about source material, so I’ll end that right now. This episode was pretty much a WYSIWYG character piece, and I can find no fault in that whatsoever…..

Decent episode even though I rolled my eyes that Asakura automatically assumed Yuki and Kyon would use the trip to do extra hooking up LOL yeah I don’t think Yuki would ever be that BOLD…
What is up with her wish or prayer? To be friends with everyone? Does she want to be with Kyon or was it too embarrassing to write that down? I guess were still a ways off from that confession.

I loved playing Haruhi against type this whole episode. From her initiative to make the books herself (with Kyon lampshading her ‘other’ personality mode) to making her be the tsukkomi to Asakura’s boke. Add in the lack of focus on her while we followed Yuki and the others around while Haruhi chased after the “Power Spot” (which kept making me think something a bit untoward). The result was another really enjoyable episode.
