First Impressions – Yoru no Yatterman

Superhero power!

This was originally a series I was going to pass on because I never knew a single thing about the Yatterman series, but I do know it comes from Tatsunoko Productions which has tons of Sentai Superhero shows like Gatchaman, Casshern Sins and Karas so if you are a fan of anime characters wearing goofy looking suits then I highly recommend you at least give this first episode a shot because it was a huge surprise!

——————————–

To think, if it wasn’t for Fosh, I would have completely let this one pass by my radar. And that fills me with a sense of shame. This show is helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the guy that gave us the wonderful Muromi-san! And from the same studio, Tatsunoko, that revived Gatchaman for us last year and now they are doing it with a 40 year old franchise, the Time Bokan series.

———————————-

Better than Gatchaman?

Yoru no Yatterman (7)

Welp I should have stayed inside today.

While the core theme of Yatterman is more about superheros saving the world from danger! The first episode focused on themes of family life or more like generations of a family adjusting to the end of the world or the aftermath of the most crazy meteor shower ever. I swear it seems that this season is all about blowing up the moon or at least part of the moon like Assassination Classroom, Aldnoah.Zero and now Yoru no Yatterman which makes me wonder who the hell caused that meteor shower in the first place? The real Yatterman or what? I guess we might not ever know due to that being years in the past.

Yoru no Yatterman (10)

Who are the real bad guys!?

The best part of the overall episode was watching Leopard put the clues from the picture book and her moms story about how their family essentially was the bad guys in her picture books while the Yatterman were the heroes, but that is where they flipped things having the good guys take on the role of the villains with the villains playing the part of the heroes! I know some people will be like well Akame ga kill, Zvezda and lots of other series out using the same thing and I totally agree that it wasn’t all that original of a setup; however when we get down to the parts with Leopard’s mom and her goal to save her by seeking out the Yatterman helped her discover that the world is completely screwed up world and she discovered that her family is being kept behind giant freaking walls?

Yoru no Yatterman (6)

A sad moment indeed.

While it is quite sad that her mom passed and boy was it sad! I will say that was the final push to make Leopard stand up and challenge the Yatterman! So what can she do? For now she will have to rely on her two partners Boyacky and Tonzura to carry her to victory and that has me excited. Now I don’t really know if they have any kind of powers, but for now I am sticking around to find out; however I do know the Yatterman do appear to have high tech weapons so they will have the tech advantage and the ending did show the characters eventually getting better looking costumes instead of the hand stitched ones they created at the last minute.

LOLi-hero

Yoru no Yatterman (8)

Leopard has a pet pig! Watch out Hawk.

Yeah, it does have one heck of an impressive pedigree, but the story has to be one that catches you right off the bat. I, for one, enjoyed the faery tale element it had right from the start. It didn’t take to long to figure out that the mother’s tales to her young girl where coming from some hard earned lessons she learned herself. What else can a baddie tell their children but to be aware, like a boogeyman, of the goodies that beat her and her crew all the time.

Yoru no Yatterman (9)

Leopard is so strong!

But what makes this a great distinction is that the goodies look like they rather have become the baddies. I guess it doesn’t take long for do-gooders to see the whole world is a terrible place and maybe they should just end it all! Nice job breaking it Heroes! You gave us the Apocolypse and all we got was this sad little tale that follows.

Yoru no Yatterman (5)

Time to fight back~

But with all that in mind, high marks for this series. It’s a very creative approach to a very old sort of tale, how do the bad guys start off? We always assume they are like that, cause that’s just the way it should be, right? Well, everyone has a Start of Darkness somewhere. But for Leopard, this might be the Start of Something Else.

End thoughts

Wow that was quite the fun and feels filled episode! I will say it was a million times more better than Gatchaman crowds for me! Yeah I don’t hate all of Gatchman I just didn’t like the entire thing, but I know people will say the tone of the first episodes are vastly different which is true; however the emotional moments probably stand out more. Anyway what did you like about the episode? I am totally looking forward to seeing more with Leopard and afterwards we can debate on what LOLi wore the crazy costume better? Kate of Zvezda or Leopard of Yatterman?

Wow, this show blew me away with how creative it was. The animation was given such tender loving care, and Eri Kitamura’s performance as Leopard, the LOLi that will smash the Yatterman was one of her best in quite some time. At first this seems like it might be something of a Zvezda clone, what with Leopard not really having any powers, just flunkies and some explosives and a need to put things right. But I am hoping they can chart thier own course. It has quite a bit of potential….

Well, I’ve never seen anything of the Yatterman series before, but this still seemed like it was pretty good. A nice beginning to our first look at this ragtag team of heroes. We’ll see where it goes, but it looks interesting enough so far. I’m wondering if the Yatterman were evil exactly or just insensitive? Or did they used to be heroes and are now villains? we’ll have to see.

After doing a little bit of looking, I see that in the original show, Leopard’s ancestors were basically the cheesy “Team Rocket” like villains of the show.

So, basically, to the Yatterman, they would have been villains that deserved to be punished. However, with so much time having passed, the recent generation of the descendants of the thieves are still paying for their ancestors’ sins.

And are the most recent Yatterman as heroic as their own ancestors?

I’m actually interested to see.I’ll stay with this for a few more episodes, see where it goes.

For an idea of how the original show goes, I found out that some of the episodes of both the original 1977 series and the 2008 remake are on youtube.

Here’s the original 1977 opening to give you a little taste of what you’re in for:

Though personally, I like the 2008 opening better, a little more updated and yet, still retro;)

Yeah looking up info on the series it is great to see how far back it goes and I hope we get more oldshcool reboots to some of the classics! I wouldn’t mind an up to date Ranma 1/2 or a retelling of CCS just like Sailor Moon is currently getting.

The hero/villain thing is quite interesting and I can’t wait to see how things play out!

I think there is also a full blown CGI movie for Yatterman somewhere…

      • skylion says:

BTW, everyone! We gonna open this up to discussion. Do you have a favorite older series you’d like to see remade?

        • akagami says:

Mmm, maybe some of the older Gundam series. The oldest I’ve only seen would be Wing (movie), and then Seed. I’ve heard good things about the older series, but it’s painful to watch anything less than 720p HD.

      • BlackBriar says:

Don’t forget Gatchaman Crowds that played Summer 2013 and its second season set to play sometime this year.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I noticed that! I guess it is cool seeing them use those kinds of wacky characters and showing what happened to that side.

      Both are interesting openings xD

well give i had this on my watch give first read info assume going be like a maleficent type series twist.

yet i was right but WHOA this so way beyond really yatterman are now EVIL & the doronbo are GOOD?!

really whole reason cause doronbo’s descendent have atone past’s sins yet really good grief yet yatterman with ray guns.

indeed what a TWIST overall going watch this & oh funi got is license.

  3. KinzaDatteri says:

I suggest you watch at least one episode of the 2008 Yatterman or the original one. The characters, plot and general premise gets established that soon and many, many intriguing questions arise if you know something (anything) from the Yatta story.

If I remember correctly (I’ve watched it 20 years ago…) Yatterman were always the good guys, Dorombo were the bad guys.. or maybe not? I’ve checked the remake from 2008 and it’s not that obvious anymore. That ending theme.. That’s why watching Yoru no Yatterman felt to me like watching episode 3 of Madoka Magica for the first time all over again. It was that strong, unexpected and just good. Them feels. Them feels..

    • skylion says:

I’m grabbing the 2008 series as I type this. Wow, dat MC, dat Meow/Favaro/Tarou voice! It’s interesting, nostalgia for something I’ve never seen. Thanks for the feedback, Kinza!

    • Irenesharda says:

I’ve watched a little bit of both. The 1977 series is very obvious from the very first episode the Dorombo gang are conmen and thieves (they basically sing a song about it. 😛 ). But it’s a product of its times where the heroes decide to be heroes on a dime and have no other reason than that it’s a good thing to do, and the villains are basically villains because. It’s a very black and white series.

The 2008 one gives all the characters both good and bad, a lot more character than the original, however it’s still very obvious and very black and white. The Yatterman are the heroes and the Dorombo gang are the villains.

I’m wondering how this new series will turn things on its head. Are the Yatterman what they originally were? It’s virtually impossible for those to be the same heroes from the series, so who are these people wearing their uniforms?

      • skylion says:

The Black and White. This is why I hooked it to Faerie Tale sorts of stories; as Mamma was basically giving a morality tale to Leopard…but one that was kinda backwards, and one that she knows the sins that are unfairly being payed.

I like the idea that power has corrupted itself, and you have some Big Damn Villains out there to balance it all.

        • Irenesharda says:

Well, you can tell that the show was made with little kids in mind. The two main characters are actually supposed to be in middle school (even though they look like every teen high schooler I’ve seen in anime), and I’ve seen more complicated and less obvious bad guys back in 1960s era Speed Racer.

However, I’m wondering that seeing as generations have passed for the descendants of the Dorombo gang, than surely generations have passed for the Yatterman as well. Supposedly this series will introduce a new Gan-chan and Ai-chan(the Yatterman) that we haven’t even been introduced to.

Who wants to bet that the “Yatterman” that Leopard faced is a whole other 3rd party that is using the Yatterman’s name while the real ones have been lost?

          • Foshizzel says:

yeah I could see that being thrown in 😀

          • skylion says:

            …that’s an interesting wrinkle…

Once again, spammy is hogging all the H. This time AMP.

    • BlackBriar says:

Never forget: He’s a shameless hoarder.

    • Foshizzel says:

I have searched and I can’t find any sorry! Spammy digested it xD

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Anyway, the key thing in the post was that C87 had OODLES of Amagi Brilliant Park H-doujin. It’s like flooding the internets as badly as Kankore ones.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

        Testing: H-doujin

        • Di Gi Kazune says:

Spammy has done it again! H-doujin is not a trigger word. *scribbles*

          Also, MORE PORK PRODUCTS!

          • BlackBriar says:

Are you sure it’s not a trigger word?

            • Di Gi Kazune says:

It’s an obvious culprit if you look at the post. The rest of the words were quite benign. Hence the testing.

            • Kyokai says:

It’s really not about words, rather the timing of comments. Spam monster only activates during congestion times and thus, this was one of those times when we had a lot of spam coming in and yours got stuck in the middle.

  5. BlackBriar says:

I guess this show can prove to be fun. It’s already got a bunch of misfit characters prone to cause a decent amount of laughs. Not to mention their weird names. Already enough that someone names their child “Leopard” but “Elephantus”… What were his parents on when he was born? Face palming was inevitable. The biggest inquiry will be determining who truly the bad guys here are. I’m already sensing fingers being pointed as each side try to justify themselves.

Surely I’m not the only one thinking of Zvezda’s Kate Hoshimiya after looking at Leopard’s costume.

  6. Kyokai says:

What is up with pet pigs these days? First Seven Deadly Sins and now this. xD

Though, there’ a cute loli. Skylion must be so confused with her resembling his honey so closely. :3
