First Impression – Shinmai Maou no Testament

Redhead demon girls are the best kind!

From the creator of Hagure Yuusha no Estetica comes Shinmai Maou no Testament! Yeah I know that is not saying much because we all know how terrible that series was at least I found it to be quite bad, but ah well I am willing to see what else Uesu Tetsuto can do or is this just going to be the same thing as Hagure? I kind of hope not and I can already predict that there will be tons of High School DxD comparisons to flood this post.

Hooray Plot and boobs!

Family time~

Whenever I usually think of any demon lord themed anime most of the time it is centered around a male main character eventually becoming the demon lord while gaining a massive harem on the side much like Like Akito from Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou, but with this series they kind of tried to change things up with Mio being the chosen demon lord character! That said I know that really isn’t all that different from the normal setup cause High School DxD has a similar setup with Rias Being the daughter of a demon lord; however it is somewhat fresh take on the whole demon lord story for me and it might change the pace of things. Also I can’t ignore the fact that she is being considered a sister or do you not really see it that way? Since they are not blood related siblings I guess anything is possible, but I am not going into this series for any true romance and speaking of sisters what about that younger sister Maria? I have to say wow she started off as just an adorable little sister type to SUPER perv within a matter of minutes or is that just the succubus side of her coming out? I think that explains a few things and she had me laughing so much during that not so naked apron scene! So yeah they have some comedy down even though I think the main core of Shinmai Maou no Testament will be focused on keeping family together or something cheesy like that? Who knows maybe we will find something enjoyable besides mindless boobs and fanservice in our faces weekly? Just kidding I honestly do not have any high hopes for this, but I could be wrong.

FK YA EXTRA DEMONS

Basara-“Keep looking I am sure it’s down there somewhere.”       Mio-“Alright.”

Bonus fun

Maria is the only reason to watch~

End thoughts

That was surprisingly entertaining! I like that BLANK already has magical super powers instead of him gaining them midway through the season and does that explain all those scars on his body? I also noticed his dad had lots of scars to?! Maybe they trained together or something? Either way it felt like an odd design choice and to my surprise he wasn’t voiced by Yuki Kaji because technically it is an arm based weapon, but what I really want to see from this series is the fighting moments! This first episode only showed us a small preview of that with Maria “fighting” even though she was only jumping around! Last thing to mention what was with that opening playing halfway through the episode?! Was that just a bad preair edit or a mistake? Anyway what did you think about this first episode and are you planning on watching more of this series?

About

Is huge anime fan from Florida! who loves to watch anime and also enjoys drawing and collecting pictures, my favorite genre of anime has to be Mecha, there is just something awesome about giant robots beating the crap out of each other! Other than that type of show, I love a good comedy or action series :D

    Mmm… DFC! Delicious Fruit Caek~~

This was surprisingly appealing. I’m in for the moment.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah same I was shocked how entertained I found this first episode thanks to a few twists thrown in.

      • BlackBriar says:

Surely it was thanks to observations from shows with similar material.

I really enjoyed this one, and it’s more that I didn’t know if I was enjoying it or not until halfway through. Not cause it was bad, but because it felt so unsettled. They did a good job rushing the ‘let’s jam a new family together’ thing, while not telling us the details until they actually came up. And they kept that unsettled feeling pretty well, with things like Mio’s attempts to wake up Basara which felt half sincere, half manipulative. And they also did well with Mio as ‘reluctant bad guy’.

I liked a few of the individual touches. The scars on Basara and his dad, and that they didn’t mention why they had them. The response of Maria when Basara didn’t freak out. Dad’s “oh yeah, I knew who they were the whole time, that was my plan.” Wasn’t a blow you away kind of thing, but it also wasn’t just a carbon copy, *yawn* seen it before kind of affair.

And I think girl Demon lords are more numerous than boys at this point. Maoyuu, “I wanted to be a hero but got a job in this crappy electronics store instead”, DxD (kinda counts), Hagure Yuusha, and now this (plus others I’ve forgotten I’m sure).

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah the family stuff was quick and worked really well kinda and the reveal that Basara has powers works instead of him gaining them around ep 7 or later on.

LOL yeah I was not shocked at all when the dad was like “I knew all along!”

TRUEEEEEE there are a lot of female demon lords out there and Trinity seven threw that out to just about anyone with the makings of a demon lord.

    • akagami says:

Kind of amusing how Basara has so little faith in his dad. “They couldn’t brainwash me, but my dad’s weak, so it probably worked on him.”

Have read the manga, planning to read the LN.

It’s a start I guess. Though first episode and we’re already littered with QUALITY. Sasuga IMS. It’ll be a matter of time before they outsource an episode to the Koreans and we’ll get some ugly lewd moments and blurry battle scenes.
The premise is nothing mindblowing but it’s enough to keep my interest. Japan sure loves Demon Lords.

I’m not liking Basara’s voice. Nakamura Yuuichi is using his stock genki teenage voice just like the one he used in Rokujouma no Shinryakusha. I expected something different from how Basara’s character is.
Mio’s seiyuu is pretty new. Wonder what she felt when the first main role she got was in this show. It’s a decent job, voice acting, but I’m wondering what seiyuus think when they moan inside the studio.

It’s just going to get lewder and lewder at this point. One simple search of the LN illustrations and you’ll see what I mean. It’s pretty borderline really.

    • zztop says:

I hear the LN illustrator, Nekosuke Ookuma, works for the Nitroplus game company. I’m guessing borderline-ero will be in his forte.

    • Rathje says:

Yeah, borderline hentai. I’ve been following the manga and I can confirm on that. Should work for Metafap. They aren’t siblings. They’re just roleplaying that they are so people who like that kind of thing can enjoy the suggestion of… that kind of thing.

What’s really going to make or break this series in my opinion is how well they animate the fight scenes. The manga fight scenes showed the promise of being pretty good if you choreograph them and put enough work into them.

But if we’re just going to get Bladedance quality, then I’m not really going to be too enthused for this show actually.

      • Highway says:

Well, the writing is way ahead of Blade Dance quality already, so I’m pretty happy with it. I know I personally don’t need a lot of fighting in my semi-romantic harem setup. 🙂

We’ll see what they do with the ecchi parts. There are a lot of ways to do that, from just having girls be topless to creative camera angles and figleafs (like Saenai Heroine did, post to come). Or they could blow it off completely, and you get a show that’s almost completely chaste like Grisaia was.

        • Foshizzel says:

from what it looks like in the OP it might be another DXD setup where only two girls actually have feelings for him unless Maria develops a thing for him then yeah maybe not as much? Lol I personally don’t want any romance in this cause that might make things kinda meh!

    • BlackBriar says:

      Japan sure loves Demon Lords.

It’s one of their favorite trends, apparently.

    • Wanderer says:

      Japan sure loves Demon Lords.

Yet they still haven’t adapted Shina Dark. I am disappoint. 🙁

      • akagami says:

Oh wow, I haven’t heard that title in a long long time. Didn’t that manga get dropped by the author? I remember waiting for the next chapter… and it never came.

        • Wanderer says:

As far as I’ve been able to discover, yes… which should be considered a crime against humanity. There’s some really good story in there: particularly the backstories of the two princesses.

Still, there’s enough of it to make a 1-cour series. I really wish someone would grab it and do something with it.

  5. zztop says:

Describing Testament as “somewhat risque” is like saying the Sun is “somewhat hot”.

  6. BlackBriar says:

It becomes increasingly apparent. Every time there’s mention of a demon lord in these types of series, their heir is always a daughter coming of age to take the throne. Hagure Yuusha no Estetica (Miu Ousawa), Maoyuu Maou Yuusha (Maou), Yuushibu (Fino Bloodstone).

So the lead male’s name is “Basara”, eh? Someone start the chanting!! “Deshi Deshi Basara Basara!”

Not a bad start-off. No high hopes are set but this may prove entertaining enough. Already the lead isn’t the standard kind of protagonist you get from a series with this kind of formula. Just observing Basara’s behavior alone, it’s enough to conclude he’s the type who prefers to be alone and has trouble adapting to change, big or small. I’m glad it was quickly explained how he resisted Maria’s spell so easily and can displace himself with superhuman speed. “Deserters from a village of heroes” is fine by me because a half-baked explanation would’ve left a bad taste in the mouth.

The other characters aren’t so bad either but I get the feeling Maria will be an easy favorite.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yep demon lords are quite popluar <3

Whenever I see Basara I remember Macross 7 because the lead singer is named Basara xD

Agreed not a bad start even though I never had high expectations for this or any of the other harem-ish anime this season, but yeah ill watch more.

  7. akagami says:

The first 30 seconds of animation was quite poor and I was about to write it off (the opening restaurant scene where they are eating was horribly drawn, the MC’s body position looks too awkward and unnatural.

The rest of it was decent. I think they spent all of their budget animating the sword and the MC’s sheathing technique =P

Mio’s wake-up scene really threw me off. I still don’t understand why that scene was there besides extra fanservice, as it doesn’t appear to fit with her personality. And the unbuttoned pants o.O

The first thing I thought when I heard Basara was Sengoku Basara. I was half expecting Date Masamune to burst in.

I vote Maria as pure trolling. It’s in her blood, after all.
