So this week saw the inevitable debut of Erina as Tail Yellow, completing the trio of twin tailed heroines we were promised. But before we get to that, let’s talk about Aika the Tail Blue, who was undoubtedly the star of this episode. She’s always been the straight man in this show with respect to the twin tail obsessed antics, and it’s cool to see her taking that attitude to her Tail Blue responsibilities with her no-nonsense approach to destroying the various Guildys. Even if it involves holding a pose for 19 seconds just to avoid seeing an explosion. And she had what I thought was the single best moment of the episode, when she turned right at the camera and commented on the originality of Thouars’s cover story as Souji’s relative from abroad. Meta’s a hard thing to get right, but I’m fully in support of seeing more of this from Aika for the rest of this unapologetically absurd series.
But she’s certainly not immune to being just as crazy as any other character in the show. The poor girl seems cursed to her small breasts, with even alien technology seemingly unable to do anything for her. Her tearful begging of Thouars for the new Tail Gear was entirely expected yet also completely hilarious. Don’t worry, Aika, in 10 or so years, you’ll come to understand the advantages of the flat chest, that it really is a status symbol, something beautiful that only the best men (and women) will appreciate. And one day, it will allow you to hold the one you love closer to your heart. You’ve got a bright future ahead of you, so sleep easy knowing you will one day have the last laugh over that big boobed Tail Yellow.
That which will never be. It’s a good thing, Aika (click for stitch).
Though admittedly, Erina is someone who seems just about impossible to antagonize. She’s so nice, reasonable, and pure hearted, you can’t help but want to take her home root for her. She didn’t follow up her suspicion and later discovery of Tail Red’s identity of Souji with any fanfare or excitement, just interest and acceptance. And in response, Souji gave her the opportunity to fight alongside him. Perhaps I’m sensitized from being a hardcore progressive feminist on Tumblr Fate/stay night airing at the same time, but I’m sick of boys treating girls like fragile, helpless creatures that need to be protected from the slightest bit of discomfort. Here, Souji saw that Erina was being attacked all the time, and instead of declaring himself her protector and savior, he decided to give her the power to protect herself. Yeah, it’s still a White Knight move since he’s the one bestowing her with that power, but it’s still orders of magnitude better than, say, a high school boy who’s an incompetent magician at best deciding that he needs to stand in front the motherfucking King of Heroes because she dared to have been born with 2 X chromosomes.
So yeah, that was another solid episode of this series. I’m absolutely in love with all of the characters, and the way the story is escalating is proving to be very interesting. I thought Drag Guildy from last week was supposed to be the big boss, but I guess we’ve got a bigger boss – a human boss – to look forward to. I’m not sure where this is going, but ever since that very slow episode 2, this show has consistently been a fast-paced, exciting, laugh-filled ride.
Come on, Souji, how does a boy get to high school without figuring out that you gotta lock your doors before your personal time stroking the twin tail?
More wonderful faces this week. So ripe for memery.
This show gets a 10/10 for comedic strangling animation.
Absolutely no doubt as to who was the star this week.

Madan no Ou to Vanadis – 06
Sometimes you have no choice but to face the harsh, voluptuous truth before your eyes.
Well, that was a disappointing follow up to the previous episode. The hot War Maiden-on-War Maiden action I was looking forward to was unfortunately not very impressive and resolved all too quickly. I’m also not 100% sure why it was resolved; okay, once Ludmila recognized Tigre as Urs, I could see why she might have warmed up to him, but how did seeing him headshot that one guy in front of her lead to that? It’s not like she hadn’t seen Tigre up close and personal before, and it’s not like there was anything about the way Tigre shot the bow that looked particularly like Urs. Just an anticlimactic finish to a fight to which I had been looking forward greatly.
And the rest of the episode felt like a whole lot of waiting and setup. The show has certainly earned the time for its harem antics thanks to its fast paced and story dense early episodes, but we had already gotten plenty of that last week. And if we were gonna get harem antics, couldn’t we get something more than a Sofya running wet and naked into Tigre’s arms? Make Eleonora’s blatant jealousy actually build up to something, for example, instead of just showing her annoyed face again. Admittedly, Sofya brought along some massive plot along with her, in Tigre now being labeled a traitor. Not too surprising that Tigre has to face the consequences of aligning himself with the enemy; Eleonora barely got off thanks to Sofya’s help, but Tigre being a plain nobleman and not a War Maiden doesn’t have quite as much sway. It’s exciting to see this political game heating up; with allegiances being set and our main characters being backed into a corner, I figure the show is building up to a major clusterfuck war involving all the players we’ve seen so far.
The look in Eleonora’s eyes says it all.
But I just have a hard time getting excited about it at this very moment. Roland is being built up as some super soldier, but the poor animation in the fight scenes hasn’t done much to make him intimidating. I guess it’s impressive that he was able to gain the upper hand on Eleonora, but he was quickly neutralized by Tigre anyway. Speaking of whom, Tigre’s shooting here once again looked more like luck than skill due to how ridiculously convoluted it was. I mean, Roland stops, thinks, and switches direction multiple times before the arrow finally hits its target. And that raises another question of why Tigre went for the horse’s head rather than Roland’s soft, exposed helmet-less one that was right next to it. Well, I guess we’ll get to see what Sofya can deliver next week, though after having been burned with the War Maiden battle this week, I must admit I’m a bit wary.
As out of place they are, the war maidens’ visual designs are some of the best parts of this show (click for stitch).
Of course included among the war maidens is a loli and a sickly girl. Because that’s what I think of when I think of badass magical warriors who can singlehandedly defeat entire armies.
Eleonora is overall more attractive, but ain’t nothing as sexy as angry Ludmila in this show.

Grisaia no Kajitsu – 06
Slice ‘n dice~
I am writing this during a brief break between classes, so I will try to keep it relatively short. This episode turned out to be one of the better ones Grisaia has delivered so far. And the reason for this is simple. Similar to the start of Michiru’s route, things of significance happen and are properly explored. While it was also for the most part rushed and heavily compressed, at least we get a sense for the significance of Yumiko’s struggle, unlike that unfortunate, unnamed friend of Michiru’s. Maybe the episode just looks better in comparison to the disaster of the previous one. But the fact remains that Yumiko didn’t (not) blow herself up with a grenade with no explanation whatsoever and then the show rolled the credits. Which is pretty much what happened to Michiru’s friend (minus the grenade).
Shit hit the fan.
That said, if this is the best Grisaia has to offer, then I am having serious misgivings about the show. Well, that statement is technically inaccurate since I’ve already had serious misgivings before now. But I digress. While I am impressed that the show actually managed to present us with a story this time around, I am not rather pleased with the quality of the presentation. Yumiko’s story is just boring and uncreative. I thought I couldn’t roll my eyes any more vigorously when it was revealed she had daddy issues and that her papa was an asshole who only cared about the prestige of his family name and business. But the show proceeded to prove me wrong by having said dickbutt father abruptly reform upon the apparent loss of his only remaining child. Talk about trite and contrived. My eyes were practically spinning in their sockets with the speed at which I was rolling them.
Well that escalated quickly.
Now in defense of the VN’s supposed good name, I have heard from VN players that most of this episode was in fact anime-original content. That’s fine. I usually take the approach that an anime can, and should, be a stand alone work of its own, even if it is based on some other source material. So there’s nothing wrong with the idea of changing Yumiko’s story here. But please at least have the decency to make it good if you’re going to do that. It’s quite a disservice when you take what was allegedly an already good story and replace it with your own boring drivel.
Remember that sniper rifle that had us all interested in the premiere?
Which brings me to the next point: I’m honestly not sure who the show is marketed towards at this point. Obviously the viewership can be divided into two main crowds: those who have played the VN and those who have not. The former likely demand faithfulness to the source material, while the latter are just looking for a good, entertaining story. So far, the show has failed abysmally at both fronts. It has managed to butcher both the source material as well as its attempts at replacing said source material with original material. It really can’t get worse than that, unless the goal of the show from the very start was to sell itself to no one.
And they lived happily ever after… in spirit.
So what happens from here on out? Well, I sincerely hope that Grisaia gets its shit together before it turns into an even bigger laughing stock. There’s still the conclusion to Yumiko’s route, as well as three other characters (Makina, Sachi, and Amane) to explore. There’s no helping the harm that’s been done since that would be crying over spilled milk. But if the show can at least finish strong in the second half, it won’t have been a complete waste of time for us viewers who were expecting better from an anime adaptation of such a well-received and reputable VN.

Twintails is turning out to be the most reliable fun of the season, along with Bahamut.
Neither was on my radar at all before the season started.

Both were unknowns and became surprise hits. Certainly with Bahamut. Goes to show a book can’t be judged by its cover.

Rage of Bahamut is definitely my favorite this season, but Twintails is just as definitely the show I look forward to most every week. Wouldn’t have predicted either, though I must admit Twintails is progressing in a style that I kinda expected. Just didn’t expect it to do it so well.

Grisaia no Kajitsu – 06: An improvement so far. Yumiko’s arc provided more insight and drama compared to Michiru’s. Living in such a miserable, hellish life, there’s no way she could’ve kept her sanity and not lash out at that student. Yumiko was on a short fuse as it is.
Her father was obviously a massive asshole who deserves no forgiveness, can’t deny that but I’m also seething at the mother. Telling her she should’ve been something she’s not for the sake of having it easy was really low. Come on, she was the only one who gave a damn to visit her in the hospital. Ungrateful bitch. Made it clear she valued other things more than her own child.

Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu – 05: Now the team is set. If had to categorize each Tail based on skill, Tail Red would be attack, Tail Blue for speed and Tail Yellow with her heavily armored suit for defense.
I’m amazed. The president connected Souji to Tail Red simply by looking at the bracelet. Glad to know most of the characters aren’t gullible. Though I inquire as to how she got her conclusion with the obvious gender difference factor in the way.
Poor Aika. Once Thouars said that bust enhancing fragment she found was going to another suit, her hopes were going to get crushed before getting to see the light of day. However, her ambition is to be admired. It’s only justice. 😉
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
Even Twirl was sympathetic to Aika. It’s not Twirl’s fault that the Yellow bracelet didn’t resonate with Aika (not that it’s Aika’s either).
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
I’m sure the Yellow bracelet rejected because it already sensed the properties of the Blue bracelet inside her.

Interestingly, I found NGNL’s oppai trio to be non-offensive… Maybe it’s the style of dress and emphasis on the element?

Heh, I believe I’ve just found some useful ammunition for this bust war. Charge!!!
POWUH: Meta Team and Meta-Analyst with 3844 comments
Don’t be a Steph! 😛
What I suspect is the reasoning is that the trio have usefulness other than being top heavy:
Steph: the person that gets things done
Jibril: the person who you call for heavy firepower. Also a good librarian.
Fii: #2 in terms of artillery, more precision.
I had been thinking of NGNL and the way its designed is that each character would have a role in a RPG party.
Shiro being the tactician and Sora being psyops. Izuna fills the brute physical tank role, Inu tanks. Plum is… an entrapping disguise master.

Twintails: The Guildys are just a buch of space perverts. ;p
Vanadis: LN readers say the anime will likely cover the 1st 5 volumes, the Brune civil war arc. This will allow all the Vanadis to be introduced. They are also complaining how the anime is cutting character interactions, world building and other subtleties that made the LN good.
Ps. Translated volumes are available at Bakatsuki; the latest vol 10 is being translated Atm.

What we [the Collective of the Borg] hope is that it doesn’t spew a crappy second season like Nyaruko-san. That said, while its an entertaining piece of work, we don’t see particularly good disc sales. Please correct that last statement if there is any anecdotal evidence.
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
Though it’s somehow entertaining, I don’t see this as the kind of anime to generate a second season. My guess is anything useful would be expended right here. It’s difficult to believe a lot of material can come from this. It is a gimmick being used, after all.

Madan no Ou to Vanadis – 06: I’m liking this more as it goes along. It keeps getting interesting. Tigre’s sudden brand as a traitor and subsequent seizure of his homeland made up for the anticlimactic end to the fight at the start. Where he goes from here is anyone’s guess. If he’s lucky, he might find something of value and offer it to Ludmila as tribute in exchange for help if everything begins to go south. She’s already sweet on him. Right now, he has to worry about staying alive. That slash across his chest looks deep.
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
Vanadis: The whole war thing seems stupid. “Why are we attacking?” “Because there’s an army there!” “But why is there an army there?” “Because we’re here to attack them!” Plus they’re explaining who’s on whose side, and where they’re going, and there’s no map, and we have no idea where any of these places are and it’s all completely meaningless.
POWUH: 700-799 and Parkouring Fanboy with 776 comments
A map would definitely be helpful. Along with a basic explanation of why these countries are at war. Plus maybe how much autonomy each of these duchies have. I get the feeling someone who knows more about medieval politics might be able to figure it out without explanation, but not me.
POWUH: 600-699 and LN Enthusiast with 623 comments

I’m somehow stuck with Grisaia no Kajitsu ‘-‘ Is that bad?
It’s like, stuff get so out of hand, so over the top, so disturbing that I can’t help but lock my eyes on the screen. I’m not saying that it’s great though, there are a lot of problems. Her father becoming another person as soon as Yumiko “died” was very offputting to me. At one point he is a bastard who would scare her daughter to death, only for her to become a decent heir to his company and the other, he is mourning for her death (almost understandable, since he already lost another child but still…)
Ah, and the slight shaftisms. I like it a lot. Yeah, I’ve become a Shaft fanboy after spending so much time with monogatari series.
POWUH: 700-799 and Parkouring Fanboy with 776 comments
AFAIK, Shaft has nothing to do with Le Fruit de la Grisaia. It’s being produced by 8-Bit, whose likely most famous work is the Infinite Stratos series.
One connection to Shaft is that the original character designs for Le Fruit de la Grisaia VN was done by Akio Watanabe, who also did the anime character designs for the Monogatari series (including doing the full on character design of Ononoki Yotsugi, who had not been illustrated in the novels at the time of the Nisemonogatari anime). He’s also known for doing the anime character designs for the The World God Only Knows series. And if you pick up the PS3/Vita game Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed, he did the character designs for that.
POWUH: and LOLi Defender with 10998 comments
8-Bit should be more famous for Yama no Susume…

Vanadis LN elaborations:
1)Urs is the name of Tigre’s late father.
2)In the novels, Tigre is developing feelings for Ellen. He doesn’t act on them because there’s too many complicated politics involved if a Vanadis and minor Brune nobleman got together.
3)Lim’s weakness is for stuffed toy animals, especially teddy bears. This is why she blushed when helping Tigre get dressed in his bearskin.
4)Tigre tries to play it cool like Ellen when Lim walks into him bathing naked. He gets a bucket in the face.
POWUH: 700-799 and Parkouring Fanboy with 776 comments
Hm, when did Lim walk in on Tigre? Is this another scene the adaptation unfortunately skipped over?
POWUH: 600-699 and LN Enthusiast with 623 comments
Yes. It was suppose to be in the first episode after Tigre saw Ellen taking a bath. She allowed him to take a bath there which is only for women, meaning Ellen and Lim. Lim walks in to take a bath herself. Then this happened.
POWUH: 700-799 and Parkouring Fanboy with 776 comments
Considering the size and shape of that censor bar, I can’t blame Lim in this case. Also, if this would’ve been in the 1st episode, it was probably the right call to skip over it.
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
I thought they did that part a few episodes ago, when Elen said something like “I set up a reward for Tigre”. Or was that when he walked in on Lourie? Either way, I think they’re going to that well (bath?) a little too often.
POWUH: and Vampire Lover with 11746 comments
Elen did say that right before Tigre walked in on Ludmila, which was the start of episode 5.
POWUH: Meta Resident and LN Informant with 1529 comments
Twintails LN stuff:
1)Thouars tells Souji he could have a transformed male form using the Yellow Tailgear. Of course, he still prefers using the Red Tailgear.
2)Aika is convinced Souji will never be interested in a woman’s body unless it’s her twintails. Thouars intends to change this by sexually harassing Souji even more.
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
It’s been obvious from the beginning how much Aika has tried to mold herself into the object of Souji’s desire. I think that her character is being played just right, in that she really wants to be with Souji, but she’s also not interested in changing who she really is to be with him. She’ll change something superficial like her hair style (and I personally like her style much better than the seitokaichou’s) but even with that, she’s still who she is.
I even think that if she doesn’t end up with Souji, she’ll be disappointed, but she’ll move on and be fine. Just a great character.

Vanadis: In Tigre’s defense, he was more focused on saving Ellen that he didn’t think of aiming at Roland himself. Though Roland says afterwards that Tigre seemed confident in aiming for the horse so he could really have taken out Roland if he wanted to.
That part with the assassin turned out a bit wrong. The assassin was aiming for Ellen. She didn’t actually notice the assassin until the last minute. Mila noticed him and tried to protect Ellen there. That’s why the fighting stopped because Tigre saved the enemy from an enemy, hence Mila’s confusion and question. She recognized the fletchings from Tigre’s arrow from last episode.
And we actually skipped a lot of stuff(again). There was an envoy from Ganelon that came first before Roland’s army. They asked Tigre to join Ganelon since they have Thenardier as a common enemy. The conditions are that Tigre’s army be the vanguard of fights and that they get a right to plunder a city for a whole day should they win. Tigre didn’t like that idea so they fought that envoy’s army and won easily.
There was a sort of romantic moment afterwards involving Ellen getting drunk and Tigre giving her a piggyback to return to the camp(illustration here). There are others as well like Lim watching Tigre softly while he’s sleeping and Sofya talking to Tigre and teasing him. The former will most likely be in the Vanadichu specials as that’s where most of Lim’s dere parts go.
Btw, here’s the LN illustration of Tigre’s run in with Sofya in her birthday suit. The anime version was disappointing to say the least.
POWUH: 700-799 and Parkouring Fanboy with 776 comments
Thanks for all the info from the novels. The anime adaptation really has done a poor job of conveying a lot of the important stuff from the source, it sounds like. First the Lim breast-sucking, and now Sofya’s intro to Tigre… not to mention that headshot in front of Ludmila that mattered a bit for the plot to make sense.
POWUH: 600-699 and LN Enthusiast with 623 comments
Grisaia: So much for putting Yumiko up front in the OP as if she’s the main girl, only for her episode to be totally butchered like this. Half the episode was indeed anime original but that original part was just so bad. I went past anger and just went straight into laughing out loud at the events. At least they played her VN ED song as an insert.
The first half was from the VN up until her father’s entourage went to the dorms and Yumiko pulled out that stunt. And here I was looking forward to Yuuji’s grand theft auto and the turkey. Especially the turkey. Goddammit. And they messed up Yuuji’s pose when he was looking at Yumiko drawing. That last one was just my bias though.
I can summarize the cut out route if anyone wants to.
Yumiko’s episode is actually finished in this episode. Next episode is Sachi’s route already as she was the one who spoke in the preview and that title refers to an event in her route. And going from the episode titles leaked in a schedule, it will be one episode as well. I’m already expecting another major rewrite/butchering.
POWUH: Meta Team and Spammy Tamer with 7115 comments
She could still be the main girl, unless they’re going for a “we’re done by episode 8” strategy, if they’re going to do Sachi next for one episode, and have already finished Michiru and Yumiko.
POWUH: 800-899 and Mad Scientist with 814 comments
If Yumiko and Sachi are both getting one episode routes, would that suggest they are doing three eps each for Makina and Amane? Or are there more heroines to explore?
POWUH: 800-899 and Mad Scientist with 814 comments
Or now that I think about it, it’s possible one of Makina and Amane will get one episode. And then the final girl will get 5 eps for some reason as the “main heroine.” If they do that though, they might as well have just chosen one girl and went with her from the start.
POWUH: 600-699 and LN Enthusiast with 623 comments
I guess there’s one more girl that matters a bit but you’ll see her in Amane’s route.
And the leaked titles were only up to episode 9 but it’s at least confirmed that Makina will get 2 episodes for her route. Whether Amane gets 1-3 episodes, the remaining ones will either be some skipped events from the common route or an anime original.
