Hitsugi no Chaika: Avenging Battle – 05

Welcome back to the Relic Hunt, and we have the second part of our busy Writhing Island Adventure. They got mooks by the dozens, more monsters than sticks to shake at, and rotten pool side service. No wonder the gang wanted to leave in a hurry. You should see the cafe’s Yelp comments!

The Emperor’s Fortune

Avenging Battle 05-03

Chaika is gonna round up some savings at the dollar mook sale!

The show wastes no time, picking right up where we left off with both Red and White Chaika’s impending dissection danger. Things aren’t looking good for Toru or the demi-humans either, as Izmach has to live up to the World’s Best Cheap Villain mug Gaz got him as a going away present. And cheap he is, no matter how much mook fodder he has at his disposal. I said last episode that they took an old idea and made it shine as their own…this one, not so much. I mean, I understand you have to save the anime budget, but one guard each for a known combatant and a moe mage? One for the Saboteur? Did you catch that look Toru gave to his guards back? “Who wrote this crap?”

Chaika Red thinks weak writing is best for White…

I wonder what it’s gonna take to get these two to work with each other. Scratch that, what’s it gonna take to chill Red out? I like her personality, but how long can she keep the high and mighty attitude up in the face of the truth? Or a certain truth, as things are still fluid in the understanding for the time being.

So, this was pretty much standard escape and combat fare going all the way to the end. What else we gonna get? Ah yes, the captive LOLi. It seems that no good deed goes unpunished, but for now, it looks like this deed payed off with some premiums. So what do you think of the distillation of all Izmach’s work? The Lada Niva.

Avenging Battle 05-activate

LOLi activated! Imouto Gundo mode initialized!

Yes, she is named after another Soviet era, and still current era, automobile. Can you believe it? And she packs one hell of a punch. If that was the effect of three of six seals released, what does all six bring you? Is the growth exponential? The sum total of all that Fayla splicing is interesting, as I was expecting some sort of magical-genetic Gaz super-clone. But, it’s a Gundr. Gaz’s Gundr? One thing is for sure, Niva, by episodes end, is pretty much set on the mission to collect more remains; something which Toru is already set on doing.

Yeah, I’m pretty short this time around as the episode largely speaks for itself. Very straightforward action escape scenario with little to no real tension. Is it to much to ask for Toru to kick ten different kinds of ass making an escape, or put the Chaika’s in a bit more jeopardy early on. The ending could have used something other than Toru’s exasperated, “There’s just no end to them”. Last episode was by the book in a good way, this one was in a mediocre way, with just enough kick to save it here and there. And does anyone feel sorry for the Fayla? Just left there to starve? I mean, they are some nasty pieces of work, but there are some horizons I can’t cross.

For Next Time and Preview

Avenging Battle 05-preview

Yes! YES! YESSSSS! Kick more ass, Vivi!

So by episodes end we got our next arc nicely set up. The Principality of Hartgen, you remember that guy, is sponsoring a no holds barred, kill-em-all competition for one of Gaz’s remains. There are also rumors he is mustering an army for war, and after Layla’s and Ricardo’s shenanigans from the Floating Fortress incident no one in the Alliance government are going to take chances. So Team Gillette/Vivi is off to poke into things. Yep, it’s gonna be a character blender with all surviving Chaika’s, the Mysterious Cavalier, and the Acura Big Bro in a death match! Death Match! Death Match! BONES will sell you the whole seat…but you’ll only need the edge. LOL.

Wow, I don’t think anyone else on Metanorn does same day posts. Good work ethic there Skylion!

I have a very deadline oriented mindset. So once I see the episode, the clock is ticking. But that’s just me. I think all of us do incredible no matter the time frame.

      • BlackBriar says:

It always amazes how you’re mostly on time with your posts. I bet you watch the episode a second time right after the first before writing so as to organize your thoughts.

        • skylion says:

Nope. Wednesday is my “day off”, and yes the quotes are on purpose. But I usually watch Chaika soon after it comes out. Then…other stuff…and more stuff. Last week that was hunger and lack of anything I wanted to make. So, I took my laptop and myself to Subway, watched it a second time. And then took screenshots and made a scratch draft.

Then, I walk back home. Did other stuff. Then wrote the post. Sat on it for awhile. Did other stuff. Published.

The walk home was really when the thoughts got organized.

And “on time” doesn’t really count. We all have different methods here when we write, none is better than the other.

        • Highway says:

I do take exception to the ‘on time’. I could not write a satisfactory post if I were to try to hurry it out on the same night I watched a show, or if I were to try to do three posts in a day (since three of my shows air within a day). I need more time to think about what happened and rewatch the show.

Of course, my schedule this week got all blown up with food poisoning. 🙁

Yikes… That’s not good. Get well soon, then.

Now we have Twin Tails Chaika! Tail Grey! 😀

Japanese Wikipedia states ep 1-3 are anime-original content, with elements from vol 7-9. Vol 7, the island arc, was covered in episodes 4-5.

The fighting tournament covers vol 8-9, and the final arc is vol 10-11. The issue is how the story will be distributed among the last 5 episodes (assuming Chaika Season 2 is only 10 episodes).

    • skylion says:

Avenging Battle is slated for ten episodes. I would guess they could do the same formula as before, original content that fits production and the medium, along with LN material that fits best.

    • BlackBriar says:

It is indeed 10 episodes long. A bummer since the first half had 12. So I’m assuming the representing studio made this choice because there was only enough material to allow that much.

  4. BlackBriar says:

Now much to talk about this time around. The bastard scientist got his just desserts, everyone else kicked ass and they made a new friend. Since Niva needed Chaika to activate, I wonder if Gaz wasn’t trying to create a new type of soldier with specified equipment. Also, why are Trabant and Bodhran so different from other Chaikas? The rest don’t have fragmented speech patterns.

    • skylion says:

Yeah, I hate it when shows are pretty much straightforward an all. It gets kinda meh to say, “then they did this and did you see the thing there, and it was a thing and it was Awesome and that’s the end bye”

But then, that just makes me create goofier posts…

As for the rest, they acclimated? It doesn’t look like The Chaika twins get out much, and Layla broke her programming and adapted. I guess White and Blue, being out-liers, haven’t had the chance to get the language right. I remember my dad telling me it took him about three years or so to lose his Southeastern Kentucky accent. My mom never really did.

    • d-LaN says:

Considering “the rest” that we saw is only Layla (which she kinda moved on from being one) and Vivi (which is incomplete), I don’t think we can judge yet.

      • BlackBriar says:

You forgot the two Chaikas alongside one of the heroes, calling him their father about two or maybe three episodes back. They were speaking normally as well.

  5. Dangerism says:

Pretty sure Bogdan and Trabant are car manufacturers/names as well. -_-

    • skylion says:

      Yes they are!

      • BlackBriar says:

Are you kidding me? That feels so out of place when a magical, medieval setting is considered.

        • skylion says:

No kidding. HWY and I covered that last cour. And I don’t see how it doesn’t work in a fantasy setting…
