Kamigami no Asobi – 06

Also known as the “brofist rings”

I don’t think I’ve laughed this hard at anything that was actually supposed to be funny in a long time. Also, Loki makes for a surprisingly good wingman.

I guess Zeus is crying in a corner or something this episode after being told off by Yui, since he didn’t appear once this episode. Though maybe this show has some awareness of how silly they’re making Thoth look. Tsukito joining the two in Thoth’s episodic session of scolding Yui was perfect. Hell, they’ll probably keep having Thoth complain to Yui every episode as a running gag (and also probably to keep his character relevant). Though on the down side to all of this, Thoth took over Zeus’ unreasonable-ness this episode after what he told Tsukito at the beginning of the episode. If it’s not one god making everyone’s lives difficult, it’s another. …Though Tsukito becoming a disciplinary student wasn’t even that relevant to the rest of the episode, aside from showing sides to his character that we already knew about. Oh well.

Tsukito has been pretty compliant with the group so far, and is a pretty low tension guy, so how does the writing give Yui a reason to hang out with him? By using a convenient plot device in the form of rings, of course! Though it was a pretty entertaining plot device that made the episode more interesting than where it started with, so there’s really no reason to complain. Plus how else were they supposed to have him talk to Yui for longer than a single conversation? Tsukito is pretty independent and like the episode showed, it seems that he would rather do things himself. With Yui’s eternally helpful personality, this gave them a better chance to talk as opposed to Yui forcing herself on him.

There wasn’t much of an explanation as to how Tsukito’s personality turned out the way it is this episode. Maybe one could assume that Tsukito is so diligent because his one and only job is apparently just to stare at the moon. It would be pretty sad if he couldn’t do that properly, so maybe that’s why he’s so obsessive over doing his jobs properly. Plus because there wasn’t any huge backstory or huge character change with Tsukito’s character, that gave the show a chance for a slightly more comic relief-oriented episode. Or at least, certainly more comic relief-oriented than Takeru’s episode.

Between Tsukito saying all of his lines in deadpan (er, not that this is any different from usual, but his dialogue was certainly something) and the rest of the cast totally-not-conspicuously stalking the two characters, the episode was rather funny. Though on a more serious note, from the looks of it, only Balder, Apollon and maybe Takeru (since he doesn’t seem to have anything against Yui being close to his brother) are on any kind of love route. Hades was too busy causing(? it’s questionable) most of the comic relief in cooperation with Loki’s rings in the episode and Loki was the one who caused the problem in the first place. It’s still not entirely clear if any love flags have been raised with Tsukito though, since “the moon looks more beautiful tonight” isn’t exactly concrete evidence that he likes Yui. The same reasoning applies to his actions this episode. He might have just been doing those things to get the rings off as opposed to genuine affection. Though maybe as the episodes go on, we’ll see how he really feels. They seem to have done this with Takeru, after all. I didn’t think Takeru would be as concerned over Yui and Tsukito being “lovers” as he was. I was expecting him to just think of Yui as a friend or maybe even a more bromantic “grrrr keep away from my brother”. If you’re watching this with extreme BL vision, I guess you can say that Takeru’s concern was just over Tsukito. Though even if it turns out that Takeru doesn’t have a thing for Yui, I much prefer this result to how he treated Yui in episode one.

…Don’t ask how they changed clothing or how Yui did her hair one-handed.

Halfway through, and things are still going well. There’s not much I can really say this episode, since there was next to no development. There was probably a subtle change in Tsukito, but I highly doubt that his character will ever change in the rest of the anime’s run. Though where the two main characters of the episode didn’t do a whole lot, the other characters were more involved than usual, it seems. Or maybe it just felt that way since Loki was so heavily involved, and they brought back the mentions about the misfortune curse that Hades has. So with this, I guess we move into the Norse gods? Balder should be interesting to look at, since he’s already surprisingly good at being passive aggressive in threatening the other guys (or Tsukito, I guess) who get too close to Yui. I wonder if he’ll get more possessive if Yui and him get closer. Loki should be interesting to see just given his personality.

I don’t know about the sweating, but I can attest that sudden cases of megane is almost an instant K.O.

    I’m not expecting a whole lot of development through this middle part of the series. This is the “let’s focus on one guy at a time” part of the series, and because of the way they’re playing it, where it’s more of a harem of friends, it’s going to be pretty tame throughout. I almost think that the main point of this episode wasn’t necessarily to spotlight Tsukito, but to pull Loki into the group when he really wasn’t before (he was enjoying being in the kitakubu too much).

    That said, I think I learned a bit about Tsukito that even if it wasn’t new, it was at least deeper, like his inability to actually do anything right, combined with his earnestness in trying to complete his ‘missions’. I hadn’t realized how much he screwed up everything before.

    The show’s still working well, tho. I like that they’re still almost ignoring any romance. I think it’s pretty easy to see that the show’s got a Yui x Apollo main route, with the only real competitor being Baldr, and some ineffectual jealousy from Takeru. The other three are just learning about being friends and realizing a different perspective of humanity.

      Since they did part of this route, I’d say that this was about Tsukito. It’s just that his route is apparently a little uneventful. I read a bit, and apparently Loki plays the wing man in the route too, so it’s not like they threw him in here solely for the anime’s sake.

      I’d definitely say that Hades seems like he’s out of the romance. He feels like just a friend in this episode.

    This was a good episode, not the best, but I like where they’re taking this. Tsukito isn’t as interesting as interesting as his brother, and that wasn’t helped by the fact that Tsukito stays monotone forever, and though we get a glimpse into his character, we really don’t get much of an explanation as to why he’s so devoted to his duty and his mission in life, I wish we would have gotten a little backstory or something.

    Anyway, like I said before, Yui is thankfully only dealing really with a love triangle despite her large harem, but Apollo is going to win out in the end. I wonder who’s next on the list of gods to have their episode, but I’m guessing it’s going to be Loki as Balder and Apollo will probably be saved for later and and I don’t even think Thor and Dionysus are even going to get much development.

    Zeus and now Thoth are pretty much a–holes and they are beginning to get on my nerves. I’m hoping the reason that they are doing all this is really worth it.

    • Karakuri says:

      Yeah, I would have appreciated a little backstory too. Though Tsukito wasn’t one of the characters I was interested in at the beginning, so maybe that’s why I’m okay with not seeing a lot of him.

      No, I’m pretty sure Thor and Dionysus won’t be getting much exposure. They never had routes in the game, after all. Though Thoth did (+Anubis), so maybe they’ll have either an episode or maybe a joint episode between the two of them.

      Er, I think it was explained that they’re doing this for the god’s sake so that they don’t become completely separated from he humans? …Though that’s still no excuse for the asshattery going on.

    Today’s faces on Kamiaso, on Tsukito & Yui’s relationship:
    Apollo = ヽ(゚Д゚)ノ

    Susanoo = o(-`д´- 。)

    Balder = Σ(▼□▼メ), passive-aggressive?

    Loki = (ц`ω´ц*)

    I thought it was athletic high school boys in swimsuits.
    Free!Season 2 draws even closer…

    Cultural explanations:
    1)Wabi-sabi, as Tsukuyomi mentioned this episode, is a Japanese concept of accepting transcience and imperfection in life. Characteristics of this aesthetic include simplicity and austerity, among others.

    2)Not much is mentioned on Tsukuyomi in Shinto myth, other than being the brother of Susanoo and Amaterasu.
    The most prominent event featuring him was him killing food goddess Ukemochi over the ‘disgusting’ way she prepared food for him(she vomited out various foods, ie. turning to a forest, game spewed from her mouth, turning to a field, she coughed up a bowl of rice).

    Amaterasu banished him after hearing of his act, and that is how Shinto myth explains why the sun and moon are never together in the sky.

    • Karakuri says:

      Nah, swimsuits are alright. Now if someone on the Free cast other than Rei showed up in glasses… Don’t get me wrong, megane are awesome, but if a character who doesn’t wear them normally unexpectedly shows up, that’s a heart attack waiting to happen. xD

      …To be fair, if someone coughed up a bowl of rice and vomited a forest in front of me, I would be kind of put off as well.

    I’d like to see this Loki prank the pants off Fury, Coulson, the Avengers team, HYDRA…

    There wasn’t much of an explanation as to how Tsukito’s personality turned out the way it is this episode…

    The reason for his personality is elaborated in the 2nd half of his game route. I hear it gets rather angsty, and revolves around his sibling relationship with Susanoo and Amaterasu(Amaterasu also appears in the 2nd half).
    The anime seems to have adapted the 1st half of his game route(which the anime may not cover). The rings and moon festival came from there.

    …that gave the show a chance for a slightly more comic relief-oriented episode.
    Electrocution chain reaction!:)

    Who here hasn’t yet played Spot the Anubis each episode?

      I’m just waiting for the day that we finally her Kaji’s voice. …Though maybe they shouldn’t. I don’t think anything bad ever happens to Anubis’s arms, and Kaji has been having such a good arm loss streak in the last couple of anime. It would be a shame to break that.
