Hey all, good to be back and talking Log Horizon w/ Fosh for this blog! Quite a lot has happened the past couple episodes, and we talk about Regan’s appearance on the show, the dungeon explorers discovering teamwork and Isuzu finding out a couple things about Rudy.

I loved how Isuzu thought of Rudy as a golden retriever–beautiful, eager and dumb. She’s got his number and it won’t be long before she has him wrapped around her little finger.
It was great to see Minori finally speak up and get the party organized properly.
I think we all know who Serara is dreaming of while hugging her cat plushie.

Hey now, ImoCho is the best hentai airing this season!
I think LH is doing a good job keeping it interesting. Having the newbies work out party dynamics was pretty basic, but explained the roles well, and having them become better acquaintances really helped (it really does help to know what the other players can do). I also liked that Isuzu was kind of the one flirting and pursuing Rudy, that it wasn’t just Rudy hitting on her.
I hadn’t really thought of Rudy being one of the People of the Land, but that’s a possibility, that one of them would like to become an Adventurer instead. But with respect to ‘real’ people and not-real people, I don’t think the distinction carries any weight in the world they’re in. It’s not like SAO (again) where everyone knew they were logged into a computer game. In this one, they’re just inexplicably IN the game. And even in SAO, there was that good advice to live where you are now. That’s what these characters are trying to do. So if the person you happen to click with is an Adventurer or a Person of the Land, I don’t know that it matters much.
I also don’t know if the ‘losing memories’ thing is that big of a deal as they’re making it out to be. They’ll make a big deal out of it, but it seems like it’s 1) not very pronounced as an effect and 2) similar to what happens naturally: You forget things as you grow and experience more. The person you are changes. I mean, I think the people in this world would not want to die as much as possible, but as far as a death penalty, this seems pretty tame.

Well…. while we did find out People of the Land can be resurrected, it has to be a field resurrection. So if Rudy dies and no healer to raise him, bye bye Rudy, it was good knowing you (´∩｀。)

That is what I LOVE about LH is it still remembers to include the game mechanic stuffs unlike a certain MMORPG anime, but I suppose that is a personal thing! Anyway I loved the group stuff.
Yeah! I never thought about it either until recently because of all the player x NPC chatting that has been going on for a while now and it that makes Rudy the perfect choice.
You don’t think that is bad? I mean look at Valvrave for instance eventually it becomes bad to have your memories wiped out, but yeah I guess that is different than Log Horizon.

The problem with Valvrave was that it used mimetic concepts (memories), which are by definition spreadable, and consumed them as some sort of power source. The implementation here is completely different, in that what’s happening is a scattering of information, and then a reconstitution. It’s similar to the same thing if you encode a video, then encode it again, and again and again and again. Every time, you lose some of the information.
While that loss is lamentable, because it’s always bad to lose information, there are two factors that somewhat mitigate it. First, We’re not seeing people die a whole lot, and they were talking about the rate of degradation being very slow, at least it seemed like they were. And second, if this is over a long enough period of time, then natural memory loss would be roughly analogous. So it’s hard to view it as a huge tragedy. It’s something to keep in mind, that maybe they don’t want to go raid stuff the way we do in WoW: Throw yourself at it again and again and again. But I don’t think it’s something that should paralyze anyone with fear.

I think it is a possibly that Rudy is an NPC that wants to be a hero and it could explain why he acts a bit crazy than the average player and if anyone would die I guess it would be Rudy…

All that was talked about in the conversation felt too real to believe that Elder Tale is just a game. I’d like to see who was behind its development. Like if World Fraction is a spell to grant a world changing wish, isn’t there some high price to use it? I mean, it’s been used three times, bringing new anomalies every time.
Shiroe is very astute verifying the time differences between the game and the real world. Had I been in his place, something like that would feel so frivolous to bother with. In Accel World, the time gaps were so big that a handful of hours would become a matter of weeks in the game and the players’ perception would be ridiculously lax.
So memories are lost every time a player dies. What, does the player die for real when there are no remaining memories? I got some serious Valvrave vibes with that revelation. But there’s a real threat to it considering you’re stripped of items upon reviving which shows the player is indeed on the decline.
Side note: It seems that even when Log Horizon finishes its run, we won’t be escaping the game anime trend for some time since Sword Art Online was announced with a second season to air sometime this year and it was confirmed on New Year’s Eve after the release of Sword Art Online: Extra Edition. The arc Sword Art Online II will be focusing on is titled “Phantom Bullet”.

Yeah episode fourteen definitely makes you feel that Elder Tale is another world and not a game! I was thinking the same thing but you can also consider the “world fraction” as patches for a MMORPG adding in new things as it goes along? I assume the next use of that spell will be used to return the players to the real world or restore their memories.
Shiroe is a great character I love watching how he deals with things instead of freaking out he remains calm and thinks things through.
Right the memory loss is very Valvrave-ish
Yeaaahhhh SAO2 I don’t know what to think about that everywhere I go people say GGO is the best freaking arc ever created for SAO but I read a few chapters of that and was not all that impressed…I guess we shall see.
