Servant x Service – 06

Kanon improves the show

Kanon definitely knows how to make the show better.

spring13-highwAfter the relationship revelations last week, will Servant x Service keep going down the romantic drama route? Or is something different in store this week?

Something’s Missing

Like Stuffed Animal like Daughter

Definitely a family resemblance

The Chief’s quest for what he’s missing will never bear fruit, since what he’s missing is being a human. But I liked the introduction of his daughter Kanon, both for her dealing with her father and her dealing with Tohko. The question arises for me, tho, is she covering for her father the stuffed bunny because she’s embarrassed about him being her ‘dad’, or because she doesn’t want Tohko to cause trouble for him? Or probably both. Either way, Kanon does a good job deflecting Tohko, who is still the bane of the office (and the show).

 Down in front Inappropriate

It’s not nice to compare them

But at least the Chief is trying to be more involved in the day to day operations of the office now. He’s just perhaps not going about it the right way. Hanging on people’s shoulders is sketchy enough, but then to make comments about the view through Yamagami’s chest and randomly scold her, or to backhandedly compliment Miyoshi about things that she’s self-conscious about. And if he thinks that a cottontail is going to make the difference, I think he’s quite mistaken.

Miyoshi Spotlight

Congratulations

Congratulations on your engagement!

Miyoshi’s feeling a bit beat down, since the majority of her ‘work’ is being buttonholed by Tanaka-obaa-san or Tohko. So much so that she feels like she wants to quit.. and says that out loud where Hasebe can hear her. But talking to her in the stockroom we find out that she was actually in grad school until her parents lied about her father’s illness to get her to come home. Well, the lie was that he had one, and didn’t have long to live. So she wishes she could go back to school and finish. But she also feels like she’s not accomplishing much, so getting a chance to compare herself against Hasebe makes her feel better.

Miyoshi leaves destroyed men in her wake

Leaving a trail of destroyed men in her wake

The big event for Miyoshi this episode was Tanaka-obaa-san’s suggestion that Miyoshi marry her grandson. He’s very responsible, you know. And a banker. And 22. And Hasebe thinks it is someone that he is ‘allergic’ to. But we find out that Miyoshi hasn’t really had much experience with guys, because she is so self-conscious about her own qualities. That and a big lack of tact when turning down guys, inadvertently using phrases that make them feel bad, even though that’s not what she means. Miyoshi really has a talent for plunging the dagger in, even when she’s trying to downplay herself.

Aw, don’t be so hard on yourself, Miyoshi

I do wonder if Miyoshi will even make it to the end of the show working at the ward office. She’d much rather go back to school, and would she get married just to get the chance to do that? And what kind of person is Tanaka-san if Hasebe has that sort of reaction to him? Probably a hard worker immune to Hasebe’s slacking off, but Lucy is like that and doesn’t raise Hasebe’s hackles. But I guess we’ll see sometime, since Tanaka-obaa-san is going to bring him along.

I thought it was good that they backed off on the romantic pairings a bit this week, giving them time to simmer a little, but still referencing them (like Chihaya’s deathly aura when Hasebe wonders if Ichimiya gets more propositions on home visits). I do hope we get back to them, but giving time to Miyoshi and the Chief makes it so the show doesn’t just turn into the Hasebe and Lucy show.

And Touko knows how to make it annoying. Seriously, I never had the urge to punch my computer screen every time I see her and open her mouth.

Seriously, Miyoshi needs to stand up for herself. For a 24-year-old adult, she gets dictated by a high school girl (what the fuck?!), gets into long listening sessions with an old woman, and she does not know what the hell she’s doing. I guess it’s her kind and naive nature that makes her this way. The fact that she can say painful words while still being kind was hilarious though, and that Hasebe, of all people will experience it.

And again, I’ll say it again, fuck that bitch Touko. She should die in a fire or something.

    hahaha…miyoshi, the destroyer of men

“look yourself in the mirror”, i will be depressed if im told like that

by the way…how do guys feel if you guys have a pink bunny as a supervisor/manager?

    • skylion says:

I don’t mind what any of my bosses look like, so long as they get out of my way and let me do the job they hired me for. And by getting out of my way, I mean, doing their job.

    • anaaga says:

If… My boss is like that, with that kind of personality, I will actually think of many reasons to squeeze him without getting fired.

If I can’t do that, I’ll just sew clothes for him. Cosplay clothes.

    • Highway says:

The idea of having a pink stuffed animal as the boss is just so far out there, it’s hard to even think about. If they could get the work done, that’d be fine, but so much of my company’s work involves dealing with clients, that it would be tough.

    • Sumairii says:

I’m trying to imagine my boss as a pink stuffed animal bunny, and I just can’t see it. Maybe a teddy bear though.

  3. skylion says:

We need to promote Kanon to Best Girl status. She’s a genius at diffusing potentially bad situations. And in this office, she needs to be there full time.

I don’t think the “engagement” situation for Miyoshi is a good thing. What does Tanaka-ooba really know about her other than she is basically a sort of doormat at this point? She sits there and lets this lady yammer on and on. “Thank you for your visit Tanaka-san, I’m sure I have other clients to see right now”.

Hasabe needs to man up and stop playing the lazy fake.

    • Highway says:

As far as Tanaka-obaa-san is concerned, “Saya-chan” has the most important quality in a daughter-in-law: listening to her without complaint.

It’s bad that Kanon, the teenager, is the best one at dealing with the ‘adversity’ of the office situation. I think only Lucy and Hasebe actually have any potential to learn how to do this…

  4. anaaga says:

It’s nice to see how this episode focuses more on the other main character rather than Lucy and Hasebe. Though I do miss the romance because I ship Lucy with Hasebe like mad.

I want to see how this Tanaka person looks like too since maybe he’ll end up with Miyoshi for real. I also want to see how Tanaka looks like physically. It’s interesting to know how the ideal man here is described as a banker, I’m starting to wonder whether this is the kind of ideal man Japanese women want.

    • Highway says:

There’s always a type of person who wants a ‘good provider’ and steady personality for a mate. But that’s not going to be what everyone wants. In a country where arranged marriages are still more common than I’m used to, being responsible and solidly employed are things that would appeal to a certain group.

I’m sure we’ll get back to not only Lucy and Hasebe but also Chihaya and Ichimiya.

  5. lou says:

since hasebe kinda hate him, he most likely the opposite of hasebe, tanaka already describe some aspect; serious, hard working plus maybe playboyish

    • Highway says:

I find it hard to imagine what kind of person could turn Hasebe off that much. And how could they interact so much that Hasebe wouldn’t just blow him off?

      • Sumairii says:

Maybe Tanaka is the manipulative kind who knows all of Hasebe’s weaknesses? You know, kind of like a worse version of Kaoru.

        • AllenAndArth says:

or maybe he’s just a childhood friend…that’s responsible and hardworking, i think that hasebe is ‘allergic’ to him because, he’s a hardworking person and Hasebe likes to slack

  6. BlackBriar says:

Frankly, I think just about anyone would feel awkward if they found out their superior is a stuffed toy. You’d expect responsibility and authority but you’re mortified that it’s something cute looking and unassertive.

Being Miyoshi is suffering. Things really aren’t going her way but it’s a relief her situations aren’t pulling into deep depression and I bet if she found a way to make her schedule a bit more flexible, she’d be able to continue school. And whoa, she’s untentionally brutal. If I had to spend time around her like that, I’d be driven to tears as well. She even put a dent in the usually unbreakable Hasebe.

    • Highway says:

Miyoshi’s that girl who’s pretty but not in the way that is conventionally thought of. So she’s got some things that make her feel self-conscious, and lower her opinion of herself. It would have been good if some guy could see through the intent of her words and keep trying with her, but that apparently hasn’t happened.

  7. Mint says:

I am onboard all these ships, especially Lucy/Hasebe. Man, one of the reasons why I was surprised at the Ichimiya/Chihaya reveal was that pairing him up with Miyoshi seemed to make more sense due to their, err, similar personality types. I was really hoping we’d get a glimpse of the banker this ep but I guess that’ll have to wait for next week ):

At first I saw Kanon and thought ehhh might seem like they added her in a skeevy ‘needz moar high school girls’ way (tohko was enough already thanks) but I like her. She seems sensible without being a pushover like some of the adults. Her dad was also iffy at first but his voice more than makes up for it

    • Highway says:

Yeah, it’s like they added Kanon in an ‘antidote to Tohko’ way, not to add another high school girl but to counteract the effect of Tohko. And she certainly worked that way in this episode. Although it’s hard to imagine Tohko having ‘friends’ when she spends so much time at the Ward Office.

They really seem to have thought out the relationships well. Everyone was surprised at Ichimiya and Chihaya, but as far as I could tell, nobody’s reaction was to not believe it, or say it was bad. It’s one of those pairings that pretty much everyone wants to work.

  8. AllenAndArth says:

man…Myoshi is brutal, i would cry too if i confessed to someone and the turned me down saying: ” you should take a look in the mirror”…She really doesn’t have tact…Kanon is soo cute*0*
    and
could it be…the chief is a 50 years old man, controlling a pink rabbit from home…that’s really creepy
    and
Symphogear was intense this week, Show ▼

    • Highway says:

The ‘controlling from home’ aspect is problematic… Why would he then need to have the bunny walk home and to work? If it’s teleoperated, just turn it on and then turn it off. And why does Kanon need to explain what Mom was saying about the tail? Just go in the other room and tell him.

I think that the boss is actually inhabiting the stuffed bunny. Or it’s just being silly, which is eminently possible.

    • BlackBriar says:

Yeah, Symphogear G was intense. In a way, Hibiki looks better in black with fangs and regenerative powers. She owned the Nephilim like it was nothing. She’s not turning into a Noise. Her Symphogear is fusing more with her body and the toll will eventually kill her the more she uses it.

      • AllenAndArth says:

i know what they said in the anime…but think about it, would they just let her die in the series, after the ending of the first(?) season(?)…i don’t think so…following my logic either she’ll become a living weapon against the noise or a noise herself(and she did touch a nose before transforming and she did say “Symphogear is my life” which brings me to my theory of what she’s going to turn)
        and
by the way… I’m going to steal you from Overcooled *0*
just so i can tease you forever *0*

      • AllenAndArth says:

Hibiki looks cool…Tsubasa is still my favorite…but, ichiball wins as the best symphogear, Ver lost points with me for being a coward

        • AllenAndArth says:

forgot to say all about my theory…i doubt they’re going to just let hibiki die in the end, either she’ll turn in a living weapon against the noise or a noise herself(it’s what i think will happen)she’s already not human if you didn’t notice, she touched a noise before her transformation

  9. Cybersteel says:

    Presenting Tanaka-kun!

    • Gecko says:

Oh dear, I see why Hasebe would avoid him. He’s got a pretty serious look. But maybe Miyoshi would be interested in a guy that serious looking?

  10. Gecko says:

If Miyoshi does end up liking Tanaka-kun, I don’t think she should worry too much about the grandmother, because that grandma is old. I don’t want to sound rude, but she’s going to die sometime and it’s sooner rather than later.

It’s just a question of whether the grandma is worth the trouble of dating/marrying Tanaka.

…and Kanon needs to be paid to diffuse the trouble of this show, full-time.
