Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai NEXT – 12 [END]

Yusa-“Please can I get my own spin off series!?”           Producer-san-“Maybe…”

We have reached the final episode of Haganai NEXT here on Metanorn! However, I have a strong feeling that there will be more of this for us to enjoy in the future! Also thanks to Ness for our new banners and icons! Anyway, how are you doing, Kara?
After having the same icon for two seasons, this was a nice change actually. But anyways, I’m sad that Haganai is ending. Obviously they left it this way to open up the possibility of another season, but it still felt okay as an ending…

Rika has ESP?!

haganainext (7)

Rika-“Attack the harem master, my round metal friends!”

Quick someone better sign Rika up for Academy city because she developed super cool psychic powers overnight! Just kidding or am I? I think she would fit in quite well and become Kuroko’s rival in perverted moments. Once again I have to say that Rika stole the spotlight for the episode this week while the other characters deal with some changes in the club because Kodaka has avoided everyone from the club thanks to Sena’s random confession last time, but at least Hinata got some valuable screen time along with Yusa. I thought it was kind of funny watching Kodaka get tricked into “helping” the student council members with some physical labor, oh and Yukimura’s comment about him being turned into a slave by the council made me laugh so much! Damn she has a way with words and who could forget her reaction to use Kodaka’s yaoi-hole? OH MY GOD Rika what have you done to poor Yukimura’s innocent mind? I mean aside from that I really like Hinata’s personality and it kind of reminded me of Rider’s personality from Fate/Zero? Anyway back to Rika who used some extreme tactics and brainpower to get Kodaka to finally accept her as a friend by hitting him with those metal balls over and over again; however, in the end obviously EVERYONE in the club is his friend, it just took him a long ass time to figure that out.

High-tech Violence Solves Everything

Kodaka-“Damn you Rika and your scientific brain!”

Screw going to Academy City, the cast of Chuunibyou should get her to develop stuff for them. I’m sure they would love high tech ‘magical’ things like that (since S2 is apparently coming and all). Anyways, yeah. Rika totally did steal the show here. What better way to get the guy in denial to come to terms other than beating him up on the rooftop using a highly improbable manner? Okay, so I guess part of his awkwardness was because he didn’t want to commit and possibly break up the club. I’m just glad he figured out before the ending of this season. It was kind of funny (obviously in an ironic way) how he kept saying that he wasn’t the main character in a harem show, but this explains why he was never really an active participant in the girl’s activities and was more like the tsukkomi in the background. Anyways,Rika seems to have been friendzoned (only not really because I’d still say she’s an eligible OTP candidate), but Kodaka seems to be over his reluctance now. He and Sena were kind of blushing at the end, but I don’t think that means much other than that they need to talk about that (which I assume would end in Kodaka saying “ask again later and see how I feel then”, but who knows. The season is already over).

As for Yozora… Well, her running off like that was what made the ending feel incomplete (I honestly think they could have left it as Kodaka coming back to the club and life continuing on as usual). Though I’m not particularly upset about her leaving though since it found it funny in a way. It felt like it was tacked on last minute (only, I know that’s not true since Sena’s confession obviously impacted her heavily and I assume it happened in the novels too) and was like the production staff saying “Oh yeah, and Yozora is gone. Have fun buying the BDs and hoping that those will fund a season 3!” …In short, I found it unintentionally funny, so I’ll take it.

Fun with Rika and friends

Super aggressive Rika is kind of amazing!

Indeed, Mr. Kodaka…

Good bye my science waifu! Until we meet again love Fosh.

End thoughts

Damn I wanted more from that ending! Seriously why did it have to end like that? I guess we are to believe Yozora turns around and finds Kodaka or the other club members standing there? Then again, I think this is the classic anime misunderstanding because to Yozora she assumed Rika stole Kodaka away from her or am I way off because it certainly feels that way to me, but of course maybe Rika touched a nerve that bothered Yozora? Besides the dull ending which in my opinion easily opens the door for a Haganai movie that follows the club members looking for Yozora or can they produce a third season? I have no idea how popular Haganai is so only time will tell I guess…

While I was annoyed at the ending I had a blast with the second season because it gave me what I wanted from the first season with more Rika! And boy did she become one of the best developed characters in this series, but we had plenty of other characters that went through some dramatic changes like Yukimura finally figuring out she was a girl the ENTIRE time? We also watched Maria and Kobato sort of became friendly towards each other. Not to be forgotten, Kodaka discovered he HAS friends and Yozora wanted to get romantic with Kodaka? Rounding off the final characters with Sena who I feel is still the token fan service girl, but in the end she revealed more of her emotional side through the entire second season and obviously she LIKES Kodaka! So, who do you think had the most development this time?

So yeah. What I said above. I’m not particularly worried about the state of season three though. I don’t know for certain, but I assume Haganai is popular enough in Japan if all of the Kobato and Sena PVCs and paraphernalia I see while browsing is any indication (there was that PSP game that came out). Plus that ending just screams ‘sequel’. It might just be a cheap trick so that people are more willing to buy Haganai in order to increase the chances of another season, but I don’t think they would have planned the ending THAT poorly without the intention of another season. Maybe they even planned on this from the start, since the word ‘next’ is used in listing off things. The word ‘next’ doesn’t offer as much of a hint of closure then if they had named it something like ‘final’ (obviously). It’s more like saying, “this is the next Haganai”, hinting that there will be more. …Okay, I’ll stop rambling about this.

Overall, I wasn’t as disappointed by this as I was S2 of KoreZom (if that puts things into perspective. …Which it probably doesn’t.) I definitely forgot a lot of what happened in S1 and it seemed like there wasn’t a lot of character development that lasted very long. …Only there was because things like Sena’s engagement and Yozora learning that being childhood friends might not actually mean much (and Yukimura). And then of course, there was Rika, who completely stole the show and managed to maintain her character’s amazingness for pretty much the entire season. It might have been a bit slow and all over the place, but Haganai S2 actually did have a plot. …So where NEXT hasn’t ended well, at least S3 (assume that it’s made) will pick up in a very interesting spot.

THE END

Yozora-“That hat makes me look fat.”

Thanks for joining me Kara and thanks for all the comments along the way readers! Now we wait and see what happens next with this series.

Thanks again Fosh, for letting me join~. In other news, after much debate, Fosh and I have decided to leave on a journey due to this ending. …Don’t bother looking for us.

I wish you well on your journey! Just be careful of fangirls screaming yaoi-hole and harem baits! 😀

    yet we witness

RISE OF RIKA (really even since glasses got to go she bit turned into clare http://degrassi.wikia.com/wiki/Clare_Edwards & with still usual doing & bit mix combine trying to channel eli http://degrassi.wikia.com/wiki/Eli_Goldsworthy i know add degrassi feel on it) now likely 3rd option for kodaka.

FALL OF YOZORA give she seen keep thing like in the past trying to get kodaka til meat & rika want kodaka with how it stand right & to move on to future indded yea she is like LOST in ways going like on a soul searching/journey to find something.

    s3 anyone?

    • Foshizzel says:

Hnnnggg Rika I want more, but Yozora will probably steal the spotlight back if there is a season three!

      • BlackBriar says:

Yozora should improve herself for her sake. She’s lost a lot of ground this season. It’s not comfortable seeing her like that.

        • Foshizzel says:

Indeed Yozora needs to jump back into the road to getting closer to Kodaka! Seriously what happened to her? T___T

          • skylion says:

What happened to her? She is cast from the die she set quite some time ago. With Sena, even though she has some oddball tastes and such, she is honest with herself, and with all around her. Her confession proved that much at least. Yozora was always hiding behind an obvious thin veneer of character. She is the tragic character of the show, in that her failure is from not realizing her flaws. And like Hamlet, she flees when the going gets tough. And like that play, she may just end up killing of her own Rosercrantz and Gildenstern on her journey.

            • KLACMAN says:

or better yet reason we had FALL OF YOZORA is due she keep want keep everything like it was in the past.

but past is past yet seem yozora don’t want to move to present/future give meat stand as present/future.

yet rika now being eil-clare of series with taking on kodaka cue yozora feel like i got no future right now.

indeed FALL OF YOZORA really main’s weakness want keep everything in the past.

yea yozora need forward in present-future life & let go of the past.

  3. skylion says:

    Haganai NEXT is RIKA.

There is stealing the show, there is stealing the show, and then there is the level by which Rika took it all home. The amateurs cry, but the Pro laughs all the way to the bank.
Yes, by all means my perverted dear, defect to KyoAni, and bring your toys, I’m sure the other Rikka would welcome you. And why isn’t she on Science Side? Those personal mechs at the end of Railgun S1 would have gotten Rika all kinds of steamy. Which goes to show you the staff of NEXT can elevate a support character to main tier.

It was a fun, interesting, engaging trip from start to finish; almost, as I agree with most that the ending was flabby around the sides. Rika makes a strong middle, but she can’t carry the whole show.

Other strengths. I like the addition of Yusa and the Student Council. I don’t necessarily think they “made him a slave” as much as they showed him that his self image might not be correct, and damn the rest of the world for putting him down.

I’m pretty sure they have an S3 in the build somewhere. You just cannot end like this….

    • Highway says:

Rika and Kodaka self-referentially discussing his harem lead status was so recursive it hurt. And when she said “I’ll bet you ‘accidentally’ ran into one or two raunchy situations with her!” and he said “How did you know?!?!?” it was just killing me. Rika’s so trope-savvy and seeing it in their club was hilarious.

    • Foshizzel says:

      Yeah Rika = HaganaiNEXT <3

Season two I feel is Rika breaking Kodaka down so she can make friends with him because of course she learned she will never become his girl friend? Oh my Rika of Chu2koi meeting Rika of Haganai? I would love that so much and MECHS! YES!

Haganai was a fun series and yeah I would love a season three...

  4. Highway says:

I really liked this second series, and the way they developed the characters and relationships continuing from the first series. I saw it as them having two choices: ramp up the pranking and random cruelty between Yozora and Sena and everyone else in the club going along, or having them develop into friends, and I’m really glad they chose the second route.

I’m probably going to be the only person saying this, but I found a lot of similarity between Yozora and Hidaka Hinata. Yeah, really. It seems like Hinata is very similar to Yozora in her gregarious moments, the ones that Yozora can’t really sustain. So to me, it’s not really surprising that Kodaka kind of got a crush on her, because that kind of personality can be very endearing, but on balance, I’d imagine he’d be more interested in Yozora long-term, choosing between the two.

I do see what belatkuro has been saying about this being a prologue, and think we need to get more material out so we can get that third season. I think this story could pull it off, and this crew of characters could handle it, because they didn’t flanderize anyone through this second series. They kept them all realistic people (well, for anime).

And finally, someone who’s NOT Rika needs to explain some things to Yukimura…

    • Foshizzel says:

Great development for MOST of the characters with this second season, but Rika stood strong by herself breaking Kodaka and becoming his friend. Yozora and Sena were interesting to watch this season go back and fourth with all pranks and attacks xD

I saw it too Hinata acts a lot like Yozora especially with the laughing! I thought it was interesting to watch, but I hope Hinata and Yusa do not fall in love with Kodaka…it will be so annoying if they do.

Yeah I saw that too and I guess that means a season three is going to be a long way away.

      LOL AMEN

      • skylion says:

And finally, someone who’s NOT Rika needs to explain some things to Yukimura…

NONONONONONONONONONO! This cannot happen. I refuse to even allow this to go forward as a thought.

Rika explaining things to Yukimura is a strong positive force in the universe. It is the Higgs-Boson. Highway, I must stop you at all costs!

    • belatkuro says:

Fact: the last chapter of volume 8 is titled “The End of the Prologue/The Day Kodaka Hasegawa Becomes a Protagonist”.

And you’d better talk to the author about releasing more volumes of this. As I said already, volume 9 was postponed indefinitely when it was suppose to come out last month. Though the author has had a hand in writing the script of the anime so that might be the reason.
Still doesn’t explain why he’s only been releasing side story volumes(Universe and Connect).
The deal about him being in a slump as to how to continue the story might be true.

And I dunno if this is true or not but I heard that the president, Hinata, and the sister Kate are going to be heroines as well and will have their own arcs in the story. Not sure about Yusa but I’d like her to stay just as a side character and not fall for Kodaka. She’s an interesting character though.

  5. skylion says:

Yusa-”Please can I get my own spin off series!?” Producer-san-”Maybe…” “I’ll kick this over to my fellow producer, Skylion. He’ll make it happen.”

OBTW, Fosh, love the change to Ika-chan!

    • Highway says:

It made me laugh to think that if Kodaka’s going to pet Aoi when she compliments him, he’s going to get a lot of compliments from her.

    • Foshizzel says:

Yusa for the freaking win I mean for a side character she was very entertaining, but of course since she is a new character I guess that helps her stand out more because we are used to the others? I certainly would love to see more of her.

Yep! Gotta share my love of Ika-chan <3

  6. BlackBriar says:

Haganai NEXT turned out to be more entertaining than the first season which is a good thing, really fun. Sequels sometimes tend to lose that certain thing that made the first season so good. What an open ended finale. You can’t tell me it ends right here. It’s just not done. A third season is a must.

In terms of character development, Yozora was eclipsed by Rika prodding into Kodaka’s personal affairs while Sena managed to hold her same spot. Rika practically owned this show because of her balance between humorous perversion and seriousness. She knows when to play and when it’s time to get down to business. I got Moon Phase nostalgia when she wore those cat ears and started pointing. She looked a lot like Hazuki.

Yozora has slowly but surely been losing her edge. While she was opening up to everyone since her secret about childhood friends with Kodaka came out which is acceptable, it’s made her a little too vulnerable. If not for rivalry with Sena and her dislike of popular students, she’s almost like a different person. Especially almost breaking down after Sena’s confession. Hopefully this journey she’s going on will help her regain some of her old self.

Side note: This year sure is getting a lot of sequels. Haganai NEXT is one out of how many? I’m eagerly waiting for the next Haiyore! Nyaruko-san. Not to mention the new High School DxD and Senki Zesshou Symphogear are slated for Summer 2013.

    • Foshizzel says:

SEASON THREE WHERE ARE YOU T_______T

Rika is a great character that went through a lot of changes and I feel that Yozora failed to do anything about Kodaka, but I understand that is just how she is >.< I will check out DxD!

Rlly! You lost interest after Asia showed up. Fosh. I don’t even know you now, man.

            I don’t even ::sob:: know you now……

            • Foshizzel says:

Hahaha I don’t really know where I stopped to be honest I remember the main character saving Asia and she joined the harem…

D’awwwww don’t worry I will join in the fun soon.

Come on now, what about the sadistic onee-san?

            • Highway says:

            • Karakuri says:

Aha. See? Someone with sense. I totally missed you saying that above Highway, sorry. Rias isn’t bad either.

          • BlackBriar says:

That’s why you lost interest? Shame on you, Fosh. How dare you! Asia is so beatiful even if she’s ditzy.

Continue watching High School DxD and you won’t regret it.

I thought the second season was really enjoyable. While Yozora is a big bully, I find Rika far more enjoyable and not as annoying. Some of these instances are of course revealing that Yukimura is a girl and that roller coaster scene. Theres more where that came from, but those are funny along with her changing hairstyles… Aside from that, I wouldn’t mind more. :p

    • Foshizzel says:

yay Rika and that roller coaster scene will forever live on along with Yukimura’s F**** I swear those moments still crack me up! Oh right Rika and her changing hairstyles were amazing xDD
