I rather have sunbeam-chan than darkness-kun blocking my plot!
Even the main cast is shocked about more girls joining the growing harem.
Evil character-“Behold my bubble of doom! OH CRAP SHARP OBJECTS?! You found out my weakness!”
lvlln // Last week, I took a minimalist approach with my criticism of Campione! This week, being the finale and all, I felt that the show deserved the opposite. That is, a breakdown of everything about it that bothered me. So I decided to watch this one with my notepad handy. Here’s a (curated) list of what I wrote down:
- Amneisa at 1/4 through the final episode only to use it as a convenient plot item?
- Too many freeze frames during the Erica vs. Metis fight. Perhaps they didn’t know how to make a scythe look cool animated?
- The split screen prayer was unnecessary. Aren’t Yuri and Ena already standing next to each other?
- Lily and Erica launching an X beam as their ultimate attack is very lame. Where are the acrobatics and actual fighting? Big explosions are boring.
- We were shown surprisingly little fighting considering it was an entire day. Missed opportunity for a montage.
- Godou thinks of Athena as his friend? Isn’t that just sickeningly sweet?
- How did Metis’s scythe cut Athena like that? The blade is on the inside.
- Athena, a mere shell of a goddess, can hold onto Metis’s scythe hard enough to prevent her from attacking Godou. Even if we accept that, Metis doesn’t once think to drop the scythe and just kick Godou.
- Athena and Godou can both see his attack coming, but it somehow eludes the attention of Metis. When Godou yelled, “Athena, dodge!” did he somehow transmit that warning only to her?
- Of course we have to see the self-cest loli kissing. Keep it classy, Campione!
- Were all the girls really standing behind Godou, hiding from Metis’s sight just to appear in a dramatic fashion (as opposed to using the element of surprise to their advantage)? How did they get there anyway? Why didn’t Metis notice something was up when Yuri appeared out of nowhere?
- Why is Metis just letting Godou kiss another girl? Even if she doesn’t realize that they’re powering him up, she has no reason to stop her attacks.
- Perfect. Flying swords in perfect spheres and dragon power beams. What’s even the point of having weapons when you just use them like energy blasts? I saw Piccolo do that exact same move against Cyborg 17 once.
- Why isn’t Metis dodging? She’s letting Godou’s attacks hit her like an RPG boss.
- Again with the flying swords. They’re all going after one target. Is Godou just that bad at aiming? Seems overkill to use hundreds of swords aimed at a broad area to take down one enemy, when 1 or 2 precisely wielded ones would suffice. And also look more badass.
- Which power gave Athena her memories back? And why did it activate only now?
- Why must Athena & Godou vs. Metis end by running at each other instead of having a proper fight?
- Why did Metis explode? How did she have time to say something? Why did her demeanor change from manic to calm upon defeat, and why was her line so lame?
- “She is the goddess of wisdom, after all.” You only get to use that line before you show her as a blithering idiot sniffing Godou’s pillow.
- And less than a minute spent showing everyone happily living at Godou’s house? This isn’t an ending, it’s a stop.
So there you go. A partial list of all the problems in just one episode of Campione! Admittedly, this episode was worse than most, due to its packing a 2-3 episode arc’s worth of content in just 1. But having the finale be one of its worse episodes is also a major problem for a show. Campione! was midly entertaining early on with dynamic action sequences, but when the chips were down, it failed to deliver. On top of that, this was one of those special shows where the more we got to know about its characters, the less interesting they became, as each and every haremette except Ena (due to her small screen time) started off as potentially someone interesting only to see her devolve into some type of wish fulfilment stereotype. This includes Athena.
Let me close on a positive note: the animation team behind this show has skill. The finale featured a few impressive shots, such as a quick pan around Athena that allowed the show to get from this shot to this one without cutting, and some particularly well framed shots. I hope that the storyboard artists and animators are put to better use in a more interesting project in the future.

Ryosuke-“Yo dawg check out ma guns! I GET ALL DA BITCHES.” Lisara-“You have issues.”
Jrow // So here we are at the end of Feel’s Dakara Boku wa H ga Dekinai. We all saw the ending coming many miles away so there weren’t any surprises and even the ending of Lisara & Ryosuke becoming a “couple” is not shown because the change in their relationship has now turned Ryo into a guy who comfortably walks around dangling. The dog’s randomness in episode 1 was fun as was the clever use of censorship in the final episode, the only standout highlight from the episode. I defend Dakara being different from its manga counterpart, but I can’t defend how Feel chose to execute the story. In episodes 2-5, repetition struck hard and I couldn’t blame anyone that checked out during those episodes; mere hinting at another realm wasn’t done in a way that made it intriguing enough to stick with it for the long haul. After episode 6, change happened and it’s in around episode 9 where I started to turn against it.

The last frame is almost like a, “congrats on watching Dakara, here’s the best we got for ya.”

Kara // …Can I just copy-paste lvlln’s facepalm from Campione to NakaImo here? Because I seriously have nothing else to say to this. Of course, we’ve found out who the imouto is (that line about being siblings closer than lovers made me choke on the tea I was drinking), the plot against Shougo has been (temporarily) stopped and there is no conclusion to the romance aspect (I still don’t know what the Kaichou is even doing there in the harem). It ended more or less how I expected it to and I don’t think the plot has budged an inch from where it started. Let’s move on and pretend this whole thing never happened. …Though there is some good that came out of this anime. This is the most beautiful thing I have ever read.

It was a very brief flash that got maybe 2 seconds of screen time when Erica was powering up to fight Metis for the first time, after Godou left. Completely pointless and without context. That was in my notes, but I decided to cut it out, because the the screenshot is headlining the section anyway.

Who is Imouto?: I was wrong, they outed Miyabi! I thought they’d string us along for the possibility of another season’s worth of misdirection ‘fun’. Not that it matters, because she immediately turns into a “he’s my brother, so keep your hands off of him!” imouto. She should compare notes with Godou’s imouto, get some tips on shooing away the other girls.
I think the only point to Tendou being in the show was dopey comic relief, maybe to give Rinka some personality (of course it was a bullying whiny personality).
I’m just disappointed that they could have done something pretty interesting with the setup, but instead we got a not very funny harem comedy version of Onegai Twins.

Boku H: I liked the ending more than I liked the DxD ending, but it still wasn’t a great show. Episode 11 really dragged it down, it felt like a cheap-out episode with bad animation and nothing happening. I thought Episode 10 was really good, and set up a good possibility for the ending, and then they blew it with 11. 12 did its best to make it passable, and I really liked Lisara’s confession to Ryousuke: “I love you, but I hate your perviness.”
I thought overall, Ryousuke wasn’t a bad character. The dictionary imagining spiel was not the best, but overall I liked his integrity: not going to lie to Mina, gives her the truth in his message, was a pervy thinker, but didn’t go around peeping or grabbing boobs or anything like that. And I liked that Lisara gave a reason for her tsun and dere switches.
I really grew to dislike the visuals tho. That grungy overlay and the colors just took a lot out of the show.

Campione!: Is the train wreck over? I noticed some of the same silly errors you did (like the scythe cutting with the outside…). Ultimately another talky battle, although this boss has 4 health bars. I realize that’s what the show is, but the fight with Perseus actually had some action (before Godou was saved by the Power of Love), but that was it. Low points were the Voban battle and the kissing-her-pregnant scene.

Campione! — 13 [END]: Hahaha! I didn’t realize there were so many flaws in one episode. The last one, no less. The anime was average. If there’s anything that will make it memorable is the kissing scene last episode between Godou and Erica or if there’s another season.
The Athena/Metis self-cest kissing was escalation. She was going to have her way with Liliana a while back and who knows how far it would have gone. Before Metis kissed her, she was licking her lips, so I assumed she was going to eat her or something. That would have made sense since she could turn into a snake like what happened with Perseus. Athena is an unofficial addition to Godou’s harem.
I suddenly got nostalgia. That was similar to Piccolo’s Hellzone Grenade attack. That was before Cell hunted down Android 17. Nice comparison.

They butchered the whole series for Campione. I read a little of the LN and the first few chapters were WAYYYYYY better. Like the episode in Rome and how Godou had to fight Erica. That chapter in the LN is 100x better.
I think the series was just mindless fun for me, but the last episode was wtf. It defintely lowered my impression of the series a notch or two to low-average bordering on mediocre.

Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai — 12 [END]: So, what exactly happened in this episode? I’m a bit at a loss here where the plot is concerned and I feel unsatisfied with the ending. The yellowish aura at the edges of the show’s environment has become irritating. And if there was a spot for biggest bitch in the show, it would be Darunia. She needs to be put in her place.
I liked Lisara a lot. Her tsun attitude is ideal for dealing with someone like Ryousuke and she has a nice character design. I sometimes see her as the other half of what Rias Gremory’s personality would be. It must be because they both have red hair.
Ryousuke was a good character. The only time he’d be intolerable in my opinion is when he does that ridiculous ero dictionary recital or whatever. Godou’s Power of Words was surprisingly easier to handle than that.

BB, I about completely agree. The aura got annoying a few episodes ago, and Tarnia did get taken down a couple notches, although she then used what she figured out to get all famous.

Who Is Imouto? — 12 [END]: Heh, just when I finally beginning to get comfortable with the idea that Yuzurina was actually Shougo’s sister but it turns out to be Miyabi. What an epic troll. In the end, the story was like it was going in circles instead of forward but it was fairly enjoyable.
When you think about it and pay close attention, Shougo and Miyabi both do share similar features, like the face for example. The difference is Shougo’s hair is darker than hers.
But what’s messed up was that Miyabi knew the truth the whole time but still tried to get into bed with Shougo at the time of the party. I guess she was too drunk to consider the fact she’d be comitting incest.
Now that the mystery surrounding the illigitimate has wrapped up, Shougo can continue pursuing the reason he’s at that academy and find his girl. I’m strongly shipping him with Konoe. The other girls hardly seem relevant to the story. It makes wonder why are they there in the first place.
If the show continues, it will most likely focus on the plot in the company and the fact Yuzurina is still out there.
