Seizon Senryaku! We are back with a BANG~
When push comes to shove, some seizon senryaku is in order! We are faster and better than before.
So, some of you have been wondering about what hell has been happening to the site because since the beginning of August, we have been facing one problem or the other. I’ve been keeping all readers updated via our official twitter about the current status of being online/offline but it has been a few very tiring days since then, figuring things out and troubleshooting the whole deal. It seems like yesterday that I switched the hosts but around 10 months down the line, we did it again.
Our hosting provider surpass just became a total pain overnight, because when I pointed out the number of errors we were getting and the overall slowdown of server, they simply went and suspended our account. Yep, amazing response, Sherlock! The only reasons I got was too many http connections and simply too much traffic/raw hits to the site. Will and I troubleshooted, installed new security plugins to keep away spam bots and added more cache options but three days down the line, we were back to square one of ‘Boo, your site is overcrowding the server resources, you need dedicated hosting.’ There was even a time when the 403 error was around for around 24hours just because some genius tech had disabled http access just to keep the resource under 10. I mean, are you shittin’ me, man? When the site is not even up, the resource usage should not even touch 2 but there I was getting 7~12 even with a 403 on meta like an effing beacon. There was definitely more than configuration/ hardware fault here, not properly being addressed.
This was just too much for my patience. I was at my genkai…
And so, my search for a better solution started and I reached out to some fellow anibloggers and of course, google in either finding another shared hosting provider or a value VPS solution that would suffice our traffic. There were at least two nights that Will and I simply flitted through the ToS of the top hosting providers, looking at the loopholes behind the ‘Unlimited’ and ‘Unmetered’. Incidentally, Will has recently started working for a Tech company, who deal in some heavy VPS/Dedicated server solutions and as he has a site of his own (check out our JustChat link), he has been looking at a VPS solution himself. It’s as if things just worked out themselves because while I screwed with my sleep hours looking through the different service providers, Will was busy setting up his very own virtual machine.
Literally, like a surprise and a government takeover, Will transferred the whole Metanorn site cPanel to cPanel to the new virtual setup successfully. We did face more than half a day’s worth of downtime on 19th August but we are back and even swankier than before. You can say, the terms of this service are quite lenient and Will has been more than awesome being the Webmaster of Metanorn. Now, we can have three http connections per second if we want. Yep, you heard that right and I’m glad to populate the sidebar yet again along with some much needed gussying up. Though, I’ll be reigning in the image usage per post as you have already seen on episodics; it does amount to a lot of space and ours is in many a GBs worth (we are one our fourth year after all).
Flaunting some specs of our VPS:
- Quad Core Intel Xeon @ 3.80GHz with 8Gb of RAM running Proxmox PVE 1.8 running on a six drive RAID10
- 3Gb of guaranteed RAM, extensible on demand
- 48Gb of dedicated HDD
- Private IP address
- 100MBps fully burstable, duplex connection
- No MySQL, HTTP limit
- Someone say, BOOYEAAAH right about now! Send some love Will’s way, just because he’s awesome!
Now that we are settled back, things will be moving as smoothly as before with the regular series we are covering of this season and the usual Meta Jump (shounen shows), MetaVerse podcast, some sporadic one time posts, Editorials and don’t forget the second episode of Anime NTM, which I’ll be restarting from next week. This is not all of course, the team is always working on some project or the other; I’m also working on a solo project but it will see the light of the day most probably in a month or two down the road.
Anyways, before I close off, to the regulars on site and chatbox, you are AWESOME! <3 With the new server, even our chatbox has been upgraded so do drop by once in a while. We love feedback, so if you want some improvements in case of series/sections to be added, just say it.
- Don’t hotlink our images, it hurts the server. I’m not stopping it from saving though.
- If you use our images/ gifs, do credit.
- Report any errors if you ever face them to our official twitters: Metanorn | Kyokai | Will.
- I’ll be starting up google ads pretty soon on the sidebar. This would purely fund our hosting.
- A request for our lurkers and possible commentors: I’ve heard a lot of people say, “Metanorn gets so many comments already that I don’t comment.” I would rather appreciate if you even drop a single line just to let us know you are reading, because our stats do tell us that a lot of people visit (I should know, this is the second server upgrade after all), but only 30-40% comment. My team and I would love to hear from you.

Reading ToS is a waste of time cause you know most hosts will just make stuff up to screw you if they feel like it, haha.

@ Kabitzin, thank you! Will has been awesome for Metanorn in the long run and yeah, if the hosting provider wants to, they can screw you for anything; though, I was specifically checking for the numbers of allowable inodes, disk space, server load and bandwidth. :3
