Trick or Tricked? Who will trick who!?
Yagami Light… can be called the Knight in Shining Armour or a Ghoul in the Attic. He was bestowed with a Shinigami’s Death Note, which he uses to attacks from the dark, pillaging all crimes. But is that right? Would there be no stopping him?!
Orihara Izaya… the famous Information Broker of Ikebukuro, who has slithered into every significant community with his cunning. He sells valuable information and knows almost everything. Can someone hide from his strategies and schemes?!
Random Story:
As usual, Izaya was spending some of his valuable time surfing the net and visiting his favorite forums when a certain topic caught his eye. The title of this post was about a notebook that killed people, the man behind it all was Kira and he was being pursued by a world renowned Detective, L.
“Omoshiroi,” Izaya swiveled in his chair and stared at his screen. His curiosity was piqued and there was no one, who could stop him from finding out more.
He traced the address of L and soon the two of them began emailing back and forth defending the truths and lies of the mysterious Death Note and the mysterious man behind it. After a day’s worth of the same cat and mouse game, the messages began to sound more like threats. Without any conclusion, the two agreed to meet face to face and ‘talk’ some more.
However, Izaya was not ready for the extra company, which the brown-haired youth provided. He was almost taken aback by this fortunate meeting and detected an edge of sharpness emanating from this Yagami Light. He knew instantly, who the real threat was; playing many scenarios in his mind for the ultimate checkmate. However, he had to tread lightly on these grounds and find a conclusion to the long research he had done on both of these men.
Light on the other hand was highly disturbed by the dark presence this lanky half-Russian presented in L’s vicinity. He wanted to excuse himself from this meeting but was relegated by Watari to fetch a special book from the library. In the short period of three minutes, the orderly living room had turned into a complete mess of cake and paper. Izaya was languidly eating bits of L’s favourite strawberry cake off his own head, while it seemed that L had left in a huff after throwing it caused by an argument with the man in questions.
“I’ve heard a lot about you, Kira-san.” Izaya stared up, while biting on a strawberry.
“How do yo–?!” Light was interrupted by a laughter that chilled him to his bone but he quickly shrugged off the feeling. He could handle this guy even without Ryuk’s help. Nobody was a match for his genius and the innocent visage that he had worked so painstakingly on. This man in front of him was simply guess-working and nothing more. It was simple that he had to win this face-off by hook or by crook.
So who do you think would actually win?

Nice characters chosen lol. I never thought of these two before, only Light and Aizen lol.
I would have to chose Light though. He gets more screen time for us to actually see how cunning and evil he is. You can’t say no to how he crosses his T’s and that laugh of his. He’s a genius.
And Izaya… what can he do? He doesn’t really do anything. I get that he’s a troll and all, but he doesn’t really do much.

Yep most have gone for Light for the ones who have seen Deathnote they can clearly see Light winning this match.

L had an argument? O.o Is that even possible?
Now, both are geniuses, but I chose Izaya because:
1) Izaya does make mistakes (this is according to the novels) and he does get wounded/stabbed because of his failures, but instead of breaking down, he thinks, waits, and THEN strikes. He gets himself out of the holes he dug himself into, while as Light, whenever he encounters a problem, he does get uneasy or worried when the plan isn’t perfect. In the end, he breaks down, and humiliates himself.
3) Light’s plan also required luck. It was chance that Misa and Mikami found him and supported him. Izaya manipulates people around him and doesn’t require other’s help.
4) Light acted pure and good while his evil actions killed his father and countless other innocent lives. Izaya is an asshole, straight up and front. He harms others, but they know it. He trolls, but most of the city expects it, so in terms of cruelty/inhuman, I think Light was more so. Plus, Izaya, unexpectedly does care/protect (abit) his sisters.

The majority of rules of Death Note don’t apply to Izaya. Izaya is NOT a human being(homo sapiens sapiens) therefore he can’t die via Death Note’s causes of death. Light Yagami isn’t really mentally unstable or something idiotic like that. He is just a delusional, determined extremely arrogant, charismatic and complex-minded genius orator revolutionary with remarkable deductive ability. Izaya is a cynical, masochistic, extremely unrestrained, creative, unpredictable, unmotivated, highly intelligent and sadistic human lover who holds his personal philosophy of “anything goes” and practices it for just a little fun. Both characters had major “motivation” the cause of boredom, but in the end Izaya still stayed with the boredom and Light got away from that. Izaya is like Joker with the exception that he is not human, so he wins.

Haha it seems like Izaya got him xD he knows how to push buttons. Way I see it he’s on a whole other level then Light/Kira. And also even if he were to get Izaya’s name I doubt he would die. But I really think he is too clever to let that happen. Like he said he even drew up scenarios in his head.

Okay we’re talking about Light here the one who killed L, who is also an underground smartass who’s name and face were unknown at the beginning. And how did he kill him? By tricking and also killing of a frigging death god. You should really not leave L out of this he’s totally awesome too. DRRR only has one smart character while Death note is filled with guys like him.
But let’s look at what I saw in the comments and mmake a tl;dr comment comparing some points.
First of manipulation:
Light can’t be manipulated, what do you think he is some stupid emo girl? He’s too smart and strong minded. I never saw Izaya manipulate Celty, Shizuo or Simon. He never manipulated strong characters, tricked them yes but not manipulate. Same goes for L or heck Near.
Izaya has a huge following of teenage girls who would die for him. Light has a huge following of teenagers AND adults who beleave he is a god and also treat him such like Mikami did.
But I guess Izaya could manipulate these people by convincing them that he is kira.
Second, Death note:
How could Izaya found out that people die by someone writing something on paper? Light hides his death note very well, he only takes pieces of it with him and you can’t see death gods without touching it. Did you forgot what kind of epic mess L went trough before he found out about the death note and only because Light planned it.
Oh he could find Misa before Light does in that way he could find out about the death note. No wait Misa can see the lifespan of people who don’t own a death note, she wouldn’t beleave him.
But he could say that he gave the death note to someone else. Yeah without losing his memory and Rem would’ve told Misa that and HOW DID HE KNEW ABOUT THE DEATH NOTE AND IT’S RULES???
Research? If L didn’t found out yet then he wouldn’t know, there was no information about it before that (L would’ve found it). So all the information He got was because of the work of the amazing L. Izaya just looked it up.
And Misa was already controlled by Light before L’s discovery.
Third: Izaya is a fake name and isn’t human:
I saw the anime read the manga and just took a look at his article in the DRRR wiki and there wasn’t anything about him not beeing a human or him using a fake name. The only non human in DRRR is Celty, yes even Anri is human. She had human parents, a face, name and a heart wich pumps blood that’s enough for a death note to kill you. Izaya had a normal life as a kid before Shinra was stabbed. Only untill then he went trolling. How is he not human? Even if he used a fake name he still has a face wich is all over the place. Light has Misa or Mikami and they have both shinigami eyes. Let’s hope Izaya got rid of all the photos of his childhood days and hid somewhere before he challenged Light.
Last-L-:
L is an underground man too had a fake name and encountered Light by showing his face? Could Izaya do the same? NO! You know why? L had a police crew around him he was pretty safe, if Light would’ve killed him just like that than the police would’ve known he was kira. Light had limits on how to fight L but he made it after all. The policemen L chose were the only ones who had the guts to fight kira most of the other policemen were pussies and they only joined him because of L’s reputation. Same goes for Near who took over L’s place. What kind of reputation does Izaya have? Would’ve he found someone who would protect him? What would he do? Does he have access to prisoners he’s allowed to kill? Would he tell someone his information and then sacrifices himself so kira could get caught? Why would he do that? That’s so not like him! Send out a teenage girl, yeah like Light could’nt smell that trap. Myabe L would hire him, but then what? He would’ve been involved in L’s plan and even killed by Rem together with L and Watari. Hired by Near? Even tough Near can do this without him.
Oh my Izaya maybe you should team up with Light but you’re so shady Light wouldn’t trust you. It’s your reputation you know…
You could epicly steal his death note like Mello did. With a hostage and a rocket. But Mellos note was taken back again by Light. And Mello kept himself hidden somewhere on the other side of the planet with no photos or real name.

You guys are forgetting one thing. Light will need to know what Izaya looks like as well in order to kill him. Izaya could just hide his face and have a few people pretending to be “Izaya” and then he can kill Light when he’s not expecting it. He could also just hire a bunch of guys to beat him up and kill him.
However, Light also has the upperhand because he has the deathnote and he could simply google a picture of Izaya since he’s a really well known information broker and anybdy whose lived within’ his range knows who he is.
But we aren’t 100% sure Light has the advantage. There could be twists and turns and many other characters interfering. We haven’t known Izaya enough to know exactly what tricks he has up his sleeve. The only way to find out is if there is an actual episode with a Durarara x Death Note crossover.
Also, if this was a competition of preferance I’d say Izaya would win. Not because he’s hot or newer looking. I just adore his character more. But they’re both assholes.

Izaya would definatly win. Light Yagami, although he seems to have more going for him in this battle, is mentally unstable. According to the OP Izaya’s presence and his comment about him being kira caught him off guard. Plus Izaya has alot of people he can have help him to get rid of light. Light really only has Misa, who is completly useless, and Ryuk, who considers himself an observer and does not help light. And in a physical fight light doesn’t stand a chance. Izaya has to deal with Shizuo all the time.
