Ao no Exorcist – 02

And so enters the demon among demons in his ominous blue flames…

Hoshi: After a bling-ed out first impression decorated with fancy graphics and in-depth coverage dear Kyokai scavenged the net for, we are back to the normal posting process, but hey! That doesn’t mean Ao no Exorcist hasn’t stepped down from any of its pure awesomeness presented in the first episode. However, this time around, we’re taken through a more serious turn of events…

Continuing from last week’s escape from the demon-possessed Shiratori , Fujimoto and Rin are running from ghouls that are suddenly starting to appear and come after Rin. They manages to escape for now and make a run back to the church. Meanwhile, it seems Shiratori didn’t stay normal for long…

Rin and Fujimoto make it back where the others have hurriedly prepared barriers around the monastery. Fujimoto then takes Rin underneath an alter. There lies a sword, a demon-slaying blade called Kurikara. Rin’s powers have been sealed into the sword by its scabbard and if he were to draw it, then his demonic powers would awakened and the chance of ever being human again would be zero. As for Yukio, being the weakest in the womb, the powers rejected him and Rin became the only to inherit it.

It doesn’t take long for the demon-possessed Shiratori to make his way to Rin as he steals and crashes a truck into the monastery, letting in himself and many ghouls. Fujimoto ends up pushing Rin back to where the sword was hidden to hide him from the demons, and he also gives him a cellphone with just one number in it, giving instructions to call it once he leaves the monastery.

The other priests fight diligently but they all get beaten down, leaving only Fujimoto. Yet Rin manages to escape and take down Shiratori as Fujimoto once again exorcises the demon out of him. Everything seems to have finally calm down until…

Fujimoto collapses and the monastery suddenly turns dark. Before Rin knows, Satan has possessed Fujimoto’s body.

Being that he’s too powerful for this world, Satan opens the Gehenna gate and wants Rin to come back with him. Rin refuses but is dragged by him onto the gate, which starts to swallow him.

Suddenly, the Satan-possessed Fujimoto grabs the necklace around his neck and jabs the long point into his heart, the real Fujimoto killing himself to get rid of Satan and the Gehenna gate. Yet the gate never lets go of anything, and in an attempt to save Fujimoto, Rin grabs his sword, despite the warning given to him earlier, and draws it, unleashing a massive amount of blue flames and his demon form. The gate soon disappears just as dawn approaches.

However the attempt doesn’t do anything for poor Fujimoto, who lies dead on the floor.

After Fujimoto’s funeral, Rin stands by his grave and decides to call the number in the cellphone he had given him. Turns out the man is there already, and introduces himself as a representitive of the Japanese branch of the True Cross Order, Mephisto Pheles.

He tells Rin that him walking around in Assiah is a threat to humankind and he needs to be disposed of by either getting killed by them, kill them and run away, or kill himself. However, Rin decides for another route; to become an exorcist himself. After a good laugh, Mephisto decides to let him follow the hard path to becoming an exorcist~.

End thoughts

Hime: Oh, how I love boys with tails. Anyway, Blue Exorcist comes back with a vengeance for it’s second episode. Hot Damn was this some roller coaster, emotionally and visually. I feel ashamed cause while I remember the basics from the manga I really have forgotten a lot since I read it a while ago. No point recapping now though, I’ll just watch the anime and enjoy being surprised by the things my brain forgot to remember about the manga. Well, we get to see our OP this week and it’s just as good as Deadman’s. Loved how colorful and fast it was. The animation was totally cute, too. The little glimpses into Rin’s childhood worked well with the conflicting stuff he had to deal with this time. I d’aww’d at all the memories of chibi Rin; him and Yukio were so adorable. I love twins. (if you’re gonna have incest it might as well be twincest)

It was rally cool to see Fujimoto packin’. Kicking demon ass with his exorcist rifle. And all the other guys of the church were cool too. They held there own against those giant demonic mushrooms better than I ever could! But the scene where they have the confrontation right before Satan shows up was so heart-wrenching. All the shouting and Fujimoto’s expression when Rin said he wasn’t his real dad. BAWWWW. And the slap was so powerful. BAWWWWWW. Rin how could you say those things? I get it though, he was pure having a crisis. A well deserved one. Poor kid finding out he was a demon, it really seemed to mess with him (of course). The whole scene where Satan tries to take him back was insane. I was literally screaming at my laptop going “Nooooo! Rin!” ><!!! Somebody SAVE HIM. But what followed was both so touching and badass. I don’t think I could love Rin’s character more. He’s gotta be one of the most refreshing shounen heroes for a long time. Ooooooo, then Yukio shows up and his face is all like D: and Rin’s is just as bad, he’s all like T_T and I was just like *facedesk* and….Okay, I’m gonna stop now. What I mean to say was this episode was amazing but also SO FREAKIN SAD. YUKIO, HUG YOUR DAMN BROTHER YOU ASSHOLE.

Hoshi: After being lectured a bit, and reading a certain article, I’ve come to detach my fangirl pride and actually take a listen at the ED instead of just criticize the animation and the group behind it. I have to say it’s quite catchy, but I still feel that is doesn’t really fit the show once it gets into the chorus. Nonetheless, being a Kpop fangirl, I do indeed like the song. As for the OP, it actually turned out to be quite more awesome that I expected! It is a bit slow for my taste but it’s good nonetheless. The animation was just squee-worthy, especially towards the end when they show Yukio firing his gun, kyaa~.

Honestly, I don’t have much words. I’ve read the manga, and I knew what would happen, but seeing this scene ANIMATED just brings me to more tears that the manga scene could ever have. I had to re-watch this THREE times, and each time I had tears in my eyes ;A; The fact that they didn’t have Fujimoto say any cheesy last words, and had him already dead once Satan left his body really gave the scene a more heartbreaking impact. I thought it was a nice touch because it really had me sobbing. I’m always sticking my tongue out (while trying to hold my tears) at cliche death scenes, but this time around, I found myself satisfied, then completely started sobbing once Rin started crying (GOSH DAMNIT YUKIO WHY DO YOU SHOW NO EMOTIOOOON?!)

I’m still a bit in awe over the animation; I’m always screen capping the hell out of those scenes with the blue flames (did I just make a pun?). The battle scenes were glorious, and the way they animate the demons and ghouls is really neat and interesting to me. They look downright scary at times, not to mention creepy. I’m pretty sure A-1 has every religious fanatic running for cover. I almost forgot Kamiya was Mephisto. HE DOES NOT SOUND LIKE IT AT ALL (Goodness, the voice power of seiyuus…). Also, to me it seems like Mephisto is a lot more comical looking in the anime than in the manga |’D A weird thing to say, but I just can’t take him seriously even with that evil smile of his~.

Preview:

Looks like Rin makes it into True Cross Academy, but really, all I’m worried about is…WHY IS YUKIO POINTING A GUN?! DON’T SHOOT; WE LOVE YOU! We promise to stop pairing you up with Rin! Until next week then~!

I only read the manga up to this scene and found it awfully confusing to read so seeing it animated was awesome =D argh DX when fujimoto died i had tears in my eye T__T

also the moment a word came out of Mephisto’s mouth i was like “ZOMG IZAYA!!!” although that could just be my high-sensitivity-seiyuu-obsession-sensors >_>

YAAY nice review =) looking forward to next episode ^_^

  2. zabobinator says:

I am in total agreement about the animation being awesome. 😀

    Also, I cried too. 😛

  3. Ruby says:

It was definitely very sad ;_; I rewatched the episode like 4 times now.. getting impatient for the next one XD and yeah Satan… holy crap he is scary.. the way he laughed in Fujimoto’s body..eew *cringes* then Rin crying. omgosh :A; I can’t get over that. Yukio sure looks angry now! D:

    • Hime says:

I have a bad feeling Yukio’s going to lose his shit about this. He better not be pointing that gun in the preview at Rin!!!

      *worries*

  4. Anya says:

I didn’t read the manga, but I like this show – will probably stick with it. And I didn’t know the priest was gonna die ;_; he was such a badass character.

  5. Reaper says:

After the first ep, I’ve read all the chapters in the manga and they’ve changed a few things to the original, but it all follows the plot so far, no massive alterations. Actually, I;m glad the anime has a few differences to see how the anime distinguishes itself from the anime,
I understand why Fujimoto had to die for Rin but NOOOO!!!!!! It’s like Maes Hughes dying all over again! (Ironically, he is the same seiyu for Maes Hughes :)) On the topic of seiyus, I knew Rin was familiar from somewhere, cough, Accelerator from Index, cough, and for Yukio? Jun Fukuyama = enough said
As for the ED, I usually prefer more somber/majestic music like Yuki Kajiura (the best since I watched KnK) but the occasional Kpop does mix things up, especially when it’s that catchy that I can imagine the dance routine of the characters in my head 🙂
Now, as a final comment…Hiroshi Kamiya! Finally, Izaya has become the true character for him Show ▼

Glad to see him again! Defs lining this up along with C (which is my reality anime) as my fantasy anime for the season 🙂

This is episode was awesome. The OP was so much better than the ED, sorry, not a K-Pop fan and the animation is really boring. The fights were great and Rin and Fujimoto’s scenes were so sad, you knew they’re really like father and son and then seeing him killing himself to save Rin just opens your tearducts and it doesn’t really help that Rin is crying and that stupid brother of him, why are you not HUGGING me, just ignores him. *sob*
And just when I thought it was over, Izaya’s seiyuu appears! I love this show!

  7. BlackBriar says:

This was awesome. Absolutely no one would react calmly to the fact of being a demon’s child, let alone Satan’s child!! A thought that will haunt Rin for as long as he lives. Fujimoto went down fighting. He died with some serious honor to protect his kid even though they’re not blood related.

And what’s up with Fujimoto’s friend Mephisto? He’s obviously a demon too because he has the same demon characteristics as Rin (pointy ears and sharp teeth). Since when do priests recommend demons to people for help? It’s contradictive. Then again, in Shiki, we have a glasses wearing monk who writes really dark occult novels.
Must be a new trend among priests and monks.

  8. Foshizzel says:

Great episode! loved that opening so good xD

Well finally we get to see Rin’s demon mode! Very cool stuff there and that sword! Sad to see Fujimoto leave us T__T

I liked that Mephisto guy really interesting outfit he has, this is kind of turning more D Gray man on us. Looks like his brother might not get along with Rin anymore after he sees the demon form.

    • Hime says:

Meph looks like he belongs in Deadman with that outfit! It’s very Mad Hatter-y, isn’t it?

Rin’s demon form is so badass, but I just hope it can deflect bullets ><

  9. Renn says:

I loved the episode. I didn’t love the OP song, but I really liked the animation. 😀

I’ve read bits of the manga, and this is the first time I’ve really preferred the anime. What’s weird about this one is that they actually took two episodes for one chapter (well, it was a long chapter), and I usually hate it when they do that. xD But I’ve loved the pacing so far.

    • Hoshi says:

~Yeah it seems the OP song isn’t the best, but the animation is definitely awesome.

I’m actually can’t decide which one I like better! The manga is great, but the anime kicks ass as well. We’ll see how they go with the storyline on this since there is only a few chapters out from the manga.

      • Hime says:

The OP could be better but I still think it fits the tone of the show pretty well, and the more you listen to it the catchier it gets.

  10. Metalsnakezero says:

    Damn it, why must all cool characters must die? ;_;

Well now Rin is in demon cool mode and is signing up to kick Satan ass!

Mephisto reminds me of the character designs from D Gray man. Hes pretty likable too.

“We promise to stop pairing you up with Rin!”
-_- Can I ever go to a Shounen without fans pairing male characters up?

    • Hoshi says:

      ~I know right? ;A;

I never really thought about that until now; Mephisto kinda reminds me of the way the Earl looks…

LOL yaoi fangirls, we ruin every straight relationship xD
But honestly, I actually dislike the Rin and Yukio twincest pairing. It’s just…wrong.

  11. Namika says:

God, it’s been a long time since the 2nd episode made me want to cry *.* but this was so….amazing!!!! I love the way they made this episode like an emotional and visual roller-coaster, just amazing! Little Rin and Yukio looked SOOOOOOOOOOOO CUUUUUUUTE~ But then, Yukio……. how can he be so cruel? *O* Rin was absolutely broken and yet, Yukio, his own twin brother turned away from him…… Yukio, you troll!!!!! >_<" But I still love you for your megane and those 3 moles
    Can’t waaaaaait *0*

    • Namika says:

Oh, and when I was watching this episode, there was a FMA brotherhood movie trailer in the middle. I knew that there would be another FMA movie, but I was going all “KYAAAAA!!!! THE TRAILER’S OUT, IT’S OOOOOUT!!! *0*”

      >.> hehe ^^”

      • Hoshi says:

~Yeah I saw that! Even my brother who was just passing by the computer was like, “OMG IS THAT FULL METAL ALCHEMIST?!” X’D

        • Namika says:

Everybody is familiar with the FMA epicness. B-)

I can’t believe how much I love that show!!! <3

    • Hoshi says:

~Seriously!! I thought it would never come @___@
OMG I KNOWWWW!!! I JUST WANTED TO HUG LITTLE RIN AND YUKIO!<3 UWAH they look just so ADORABLE!
I can understand for Yukio being a little less emotional than his brother, but he could have AT LEAST SAID something! But yes, we still love him no matter what...

      • Namika says:

In the end, anime kids are so much cuter to me, than real versions @_@ I know, I’m a mean person 😀
And Yukio is going to pay for being such a troll!!! I will take a full coverage foundation, or a concealer and I will conceal those moles! Then, he will be just a cute jerk wearing megane!!! >_<"

  12. Amutofan123 says:

Awesome episode! I wasn’t crazy about the song for the OP, but I loved the animation. Wahh! I cried. T_T And oh my gosh, I had no clue that was Hiroshi Kamiya until someone pointed it out. It sounded nothing like him.

    • Hoshi says:

~I agree; the song is all right but the animation was great.
EXACTLY! I thought maybe they ended up switching seiyuus or something but then I heard a hint of Izaya’s voice and I was like, “OMGGGGGG KAMIIIIYAAA!”

    • Namika says:

Hehee~ Then was I the only one who noticed Hiroshi Kamiya without even remembering, that he will be appearing in the show??? 😀

  13. Alynn says:

The OP animation was so good! I just didn’t really like the song… lol

I was so sad when Fujimoto died omg…
    even though I already knew it was coming. D;

    • Hime says:

I’d forgotten how sad it was, tbh I think it was worse in the anime cause you could hear Rin crying out. D:

  14. Moni Chan says:

omg im a bad person. i ROTFL when that demon guy got hit by the car. one of my friends got hit by a car not long ago. i feel horrible. i wish my friend would have hijacked the car after like the demon guy did. that would have had so much WIN SAUCE

  15. Dan-go says:

That city, true cross academy place, looks like something out of a miyazaki film, like a howls moving castle or spirited away, it’s so nostalgic…also who saw that brother with the gun? i sennnse teeensioon! maybe hes going to blame him for fujimoto dying and come hunting our halfdemon friend

    • Hime says:

It really does! I wonder if that was on purpose? usually it’s BONES trying to reference Miyazaki not A-1, but it was definately nostalgic.

I smell sibling rivalry on the horizon as well ¬¬…

  16. Kyokai says:

Aaaaaaaaah, sooooo goooooood! This and Deadman are making my life wonderful right now. Brilliant second episode and my expectations are only rising. The seiyuu cast is making me HHNNGGGGG…. Such a fangirl fest this is.

  17. Ryo_kun says:

The OP was surprisingly nice and the graphics and soundtracks were superb! I like this episode very much. Though it’s a bit sad that Rin’s father died so early. =(

  18. MikADo says:

aww maybe i expected too much from the word “UVERWORLD”
😛 i didnt get this tinge that the OP was that great…
i at least expect the full version to be better XD

finally first chapter of manga ended with two episodes of anime 😛 slow paced, but considering that manga isn’t really volumous, i guess that works 😀

    • Hime says:

Does anyone know how many episodes it’s getting? I know I could just go on google and check myself, but…lazy.
