Mechanorn – 38

The LOLi characters are taking over

The time has come to start MechaNorn once again! While this season is void of any real mecha anime besides the likes of ID-0 I decided to talk about ID-0 and Atom the beginning as well because it does have a lot of robots so why not? Both sets of series have interesting characters, cool settings and have decent stories so far.

ID-0 03 – 04

This masked dude looks soooooooo bored.

Maya’s space adventure is speeding along nicely! Besides being “recruited” into becoming a space pirate, but hey she is a wanted criminal so being a pirate totally fits; however the arrival of the military proved a bit chaotic for her or did it? I loved that we gained a new character with Amanza who is probably sticking around to help IDO? I mean with a backstory like his which is filled with all kinds of mystery I can sort of see why she is sticking around, but at the same time it’s not like Grayman is giving her an option to leave either.

I think Rick is very attracted to Amanza.

Speaking of backstories we finally learned a bit more about the rest of the crew who are all apparently Evertrancers besides Clair. Greyman was once a captain in the federation who lost a ship filled with 704 soldiers, Rick was a former racer whose body was paralyzed in an accident, Karla a former fund manager who exercised outstanding talent in space resource market, Fa-loser is a wild animal from the endangered species of the Cetus Constellation and then we have ID-0 who has no memories of ever having a human body.

Oh shit you scared the space LOLi! Now you gonna die!

Aside from the main cast of characters we still have no idea who the strange cat LOLi girl is or if she is even human or not? She does seem to understand people around her but lacks the vocal skill to talk back or carry a conversation. I think she is a collection of memories that have taken form like ID-0’s memories could have created her? Who knows? One thing I do know is that I think her emotions are connected to her powers? She appears to be able to teleport objects or use a Miguel Jump without the use of a ship? We saw that sort of happen in the fourth episode when that planet’s satellite to warp to their location without warning! At least it came off that way in the episode? Oh and the masked character is also a mystery as well, but i’m fairly certain he is connected to the federation or is in some other evil organization that needs Orichalt for their experiments.

Is IDO really human or just an AI trapped inside a giant robot?

Last few things to mention! I love the use of Orichalt torpedoes basically being used as way points to miguel jump to? Also the quick thinking of ID-0 and Maya to turn the asteroids into billiard balls by making them bounce off each other because SCIENCE! I really enjoy the tiny technical details of this series so far.

Atom: The Beginning – 03

Look at this super kawaii robot making tea <3

So last week we got robots fighting each other for the fate of a LOLi and now this week we switched gears completely to follow the team track down a lost robo dog? This series has everything! Just kidding! I felt this episode had a weak story overall, but aside from that it was a good enough episode to showcase the dynamics of the team working together or was it about blending the old way of doing things with the new high tech way? I think that was the whole reason the old detective character was pushed into the episode because he was used to doing things with pencil and paper and not relying on robots or any tech to get the job done; however when both ways of thinking work as one the problem is solved much faster! Yay we’re learning!

Motoko is A+ waifu material~

Other than that I love that Motoko is starting to hang around the team a bit more even though I think she is just here for fanservice? In that her outfits and her character design are really great eye candy for the viewer which isn’t really a bad thing! I mean she is an attractive anime character. Besides Motoko sticking around I think Ran the best smart LOLi ever! She figures things out so fast, but I guess that is just how that character is written? So yeah this was a so so episode! Nothing amazing to report as of yet with this series other than I’m enjoying it so far.

Extra mecha

Such a cool shot.

Space LOLi-“Play catch with me or ill teleport your ass into space.”

Space LOLi just wants to hug you.

Moe old anime dudes are the best.

Now FIGHT TO THE DEATH!

Breast team ever.

So I take it two shows would be the standard to make a Mechanorn post. ID-0 doesn’t have the appeal for me to check it out but I’m making do with Atom: The Beginning. There’s Clockwork Planet as well. Automatons count as mecha to a degree, I guess but I doubt it’s done enough for you to want to talk about it.

That aside, I’m hoping to see a MetaVerse podcast soon since I’m curious as to what the input on this season’s shows would be.

ID-O is fairly interesting its playing around with some unique ideas for the mechs and I love the space setting a lot, but I can see why some might not watch it and its a full 3DCG series which is an instant turn off for most.

I honestly gave Clockwork a good run, but lasted only four episodes because its just so dull? Nothing was ever WOW THAT IS AWESOME with the first four episodes I watched especially the third episode? In series they had 2 hrs until a massive gear dropped which was going to kill millions of people if the heroes didn’t hurry along, but instead of rushing to save the day they decided to spend 10-15 mins with this awkward scene where the MC Naota confesses his undying love for the main robot/clockwork girl RyuZU and he was like “If you love me nod.” because for whatever reason she wasn’t able to say it? So he sat there and made her nod over and over and over and over it was really dumb! Imagine if Ran confessed to Six in Atom: The Beginning…

Yeah soon enough were at the halfway point of the season.

      • BlackBriar says:

I would have been put off by Naoto’s ill-timed confession if I didn’t already determined him to have a skewered moral compass treating the destruction of the city as a flimsy side interest that doesn’t concern him and he has no obligation to than a life and death priority. So I’m hard pressed to say that surprises me.

Try to recall his behavior throughout the events that show he has an amoral nature to his personality. When Marie stated what’s to happen in the next couple of hours, Naoto was shocked for about five seconds then brushed it off right after whereas any other protagonist in his place (Who are typically idealistic White Knights/Heroes of Justice) would’ve raced down to resolve the problem because “lives are at stake” and “it’s the right thing to do”.

Naoto’s agreement to fix the problem was purely conditional not because he cared about the civilians’ safety but that RyuZU buttered him up telling him her younger automaton sister is supposed to be in the same area and that he could meet her. Otherwise, Marie would’ve continued begging for assistance with no chance of success.

When the situation really got critical, the machine vital in stopping the purge needed a key component that turned up missing. RyuZU’s heart was compatible fit but Naoto protested sacrificing her in spite of the situation so she had to rip her heart out herself to compel him. The following episode after, Naoto got upset because he had to go through all that and wasn’t able to meet RyuZU’s sister, the reason he agreed to help out at all.

I’m certain now that if he wasn’t in the city that would’ve become Ground Zero, he wouldn’t have cared in the least about 20 million people getting killed off for the sake of a corrupt army covering its tracks.

        • Foshizzel says:

Lol so in short Naoto only cares for himself and just wants to hook up with RyuZU and her sister? Sounds about right to me!

I wanted to like Marie, but she was eh too Tsundere and acted like she was 20? She is slightly better that Naoto thou since she actually cared about the 20 million people that could have died.

I really like ID-0, it’s got that nice Satelight feel (without the Macross “We know we’re going to kill a character you like, you know we’re going to kill a character you like, just try to figure out which it is…”). And it’s got a lot of themes that it’s hitting on without banging you over the head with them. Plus it uses the “SPAAAAACE!” setting to say “We’re not going to explain stuff, and it doesn’t matter, does it.” So I like the way they just have the Orichalt, and the I-Machines and are like “This is just how life is, you’ll pick it up as you go along.” And everyone does, because it’s obvious, we don’t need it all explained. 🙂

    • Foshizzel says:

Yeah I love that about ID-O so far it isn’t really about OMG DEATH AT EVERY CORNER, but hey its early so maybe? Just kidding! I get the feeling that ID-O is going for a family friendly setup vs character deaths. The “science” and “space” stuff is the selling point for me I’m enjoying it so far and agreed they aren’t beating us over the head with how stuff works.

  3. BlackBriar says:

Atom: The Beginning – 03: If by “weaker” you mean going for a feel-good option than a plot related one, then I agree. Though the feel-good option isn’t so bad since I liked the emotional payoff from the case client reuniting the two machines after the backstory explaining why he put a reward for anyone who finds the missing machine.

Umataro and the detective sure got swallowed by the respective egos. Pride is dangerous if let to run wild. They’re lucky their bet ended in a draw.

    • Foshizzel says:

Weaker in terms of “not that interesting of a story” this week is all yeah it was heartwarming and emotional for the most part, but other than that I was kinda wanting more plot development on who sent the robot last week to the lab and why? I mean sure WE know that machine is in the robot wrestling league and Six is gonna fight him again eventually. I dunno maybe ill lower my expectations for those reveals and just enjoy the one shot stories.

LOL yeah but it was great seeing all of them work as a single team! It just shows us how problems get solved faster if egos are put to the side and different ways of thinking work together.

  4. skylion says:

I completely forgot to mention this last post, but the Miguel jumps are part of having the Alcubierre Drive, named after physicist Miguel Alcubierre.

It’s basically a warp drive, and even the visuals of the show appear to modeled after the theory; they say that objects would appear to “melt into or melt out of visible space”.

But for now, Cat Girl LOLi, is a plot point, and what that plot is, remains to be seen.

She did come in handy to show that evil military woman wasn’t all that evil…

    • Foshizzel says:

Ahh cool good bit of trivia then!

Right its a different kind of take on a warp drive were used to I guess? At least all of the scifi I’ve seen the ships always appear to be going in a “tunnel” or in some odd “other world” ID-O ships seem to teleport from point to point instantly.

Cat Girl LOLi at this point is probably a living form of Orichalt or something about IDO’s memories we shall see!

Yeah military girl just needs to spend more time with the pirates to realize they didn’t become evertrancers just for the hell of it and discover they aren’t pure evil.

      • skylion says:

Well, I think the difference is that “warp” and “hyperspace” started off as scientific ideas way back when, and over the years has probably had more science-fantasy thrown at it and attached to it to the point that it’s pretty much the ship based version of Harry Potter appariting.

They’ve just named it after the smart dude that has actually pushed a bunch of math to theorize a full warp field, not just the bare idea; it just takes a hell of a lot of power…which we can make, but still need.

        • Foshizzel says:

I blame Stargate for making me think warping was just a tunnel hahaha

          • skylion says:

…but on a theoretical, real, level that’s not wrong. But when it gets dressed up in “space jargon” all correct terms are out the airlock, right?

  5. Di Gi Kazune says:

I nominate LWA18 for next Mechanorn.

  6. skylion says:

Oh, these need to be translated…(Yes, I know some are already on sail as we speak)

    • Foshizzel says:

I’ve never been into those kinds of silly shorts even the Tanya the evil ones were funny, but I only watched like three of em? I guess someone out there finds them entertaining so they will continue to be a thing.
