Sucy is alright shes a close 2nd or 3rd for me, but she really doesn’t get a lot of screentime so i’m hoping the TV series gives her a few solo episodes! Same for Lotte as well.

I like the buzz I’ve been hearing elsewhere that Diana represents all the old school animation; animating from life and “imported” knowledge and that Akko is the new school, flashy sakuga, and “recycles from other anime” character. It’s a neat way to be able to look at their differences. While it doesn’t cover all of it, it does give them a touch more layer…

Yeah AJthe4rth has a great post on that! Akko being the “new” blood for new age animation while Diana is the “old” blood using less crazy animation which is great and the way both think of magic as well? Akko wants to be flashy and cool while Diana respects magic and uses it when needed.
Both girls are quite different and that makes the idea of them becoming friends so great.

Let me know if the show decides to change its character personalities / methods of conflict, because this might be the show I feel like I’m missing out on the most. But as it is, I just cannot stand watching the characters knowingly make decisions that *will* screw them (and usually a lot of other people) over later, only to be portrayed as the heros of the show when they (or someone else) cleans up the mess that they made.
You can’t even call what happens “unintended consequences”, because generally one or more of the other characters is telling the decision maker / driver that these bad things are going to happen. The whole story mode just ticks me off.

It does rather play that one both ways doesn’t it? We have both the metaphor of the series of derpy growth decisions, and the conclusion of still being fine no matter how those decision develop or even end up turning out…But I really don’t know what to say, it all ends up coming out fine in that kind of wash, at least for me. Sure the general script feels very puppety; that they break it down as “we want them to end up here where they win, and they start here, where it’s just status quo…the middle bit will always have whatever mischief we feel like doing, the bookends WILL NOT CHANGE NO MATTER WHAT!”

Highly unlikely! I think Trigger has a great formula going for LWA and it works.
I know what you mean by x chara causes a prob and someone else fixes it, but IMO isn’t that realistic? In the real world if you damage your car cause you did something dumb ie text while driving or eating while driving doesn’t someone else have to fix it for you or spill some drink on the floor naturally you clean it up quickly right? Its a prob you caused therefor you fix it yourself seems logical to me.
I still think its cause you hate Trigger so you look for anything to poke at and end up going crazy thinking up issues the series MIGHT have, but eh I don’t expect everyone to share my love of LWA much like how you love Hibike! Euphonium which I found to be quite boring.

To be on one point, no, I don’t think it’s very realistic at all. Stories aren’t supposed to be realistic, that would be a waste of time, when you already live in realism. LOL. No, really, you can ask “does this make relative sense? does the narrative seem like it could be probable?” Most stories are exaggerations anyway, and anime doubly, even triply, so.
So for Highway, yes, seeing someone be dumb and make mistake that someone else has to clean up, and the messer be declared superbad! Well, that’s what our elections are for. If it happens in stories, well drink it up, it’s a much safer brew…

True I know stories like LWA aren’t realistic i’m just focused on the “x chara causes a prob and fixes it” thing lol I don’t see the issues with that as much as you two, but I’m sorta used to it I guess? Yeah its a dumb story tactic to cause an event to happen.
Without that “dumb” story method I don’t think LWA would work as a series then because it would fall into the generic cute girls doing cute things with magic which is fine, but i’m sure Trigger doesn’t want to do that every week so why not have a spell backfire and cause a problem to make the girls work together and become better friends while learning a lesson? Seems great to me.

I don’t hate Trigger. I really liked Kiznaiver and I thought Inou-Battle was enjoyable. I don’t think the art style that is associated with them is that great, but really, it comes down to that I just don’t like anything directed by Akira Amemiya (Ninja Slayer, Inferno Cop, Luluco), and in LWA, I just don’t like the setup.
What you say isn’t what the issue is. It’s not that one character causes a problem and someone else fixes it. That happens all the time, sure. It’s that every bit of LWA I’ve seen has had this pattern:
Important people: “Don’t do this. It will be really bad if you do this.”
Akko: “We should totally do that, it’ll be great!”
Everyone else: “No, we shouldn’t, cause it will be bad.”
Akko manages to get them to do it anyway. As predicted, Bad Stuff happens. Day eventually gets saved. Minimal punishment for idiotic Akko. Sometimes she even pulls a horseshoe out of her robe and is the one who fixes the thing. But she caused the problem in the first place through her own criminal negligence.
*That* is what bothers me, that that is the message of the show.

That is literary every other TV series, movie, cartoon, book and anime LOL there is always a warning NOT to do something and what does that character do? They DO IT anyway cause they are above the rules! I see it in the DC Superhero shows, Cop dramas and sitcoms.
Akko doesn’t know magic soooooo its natural shes gonna cause problems for the magic pros to fix after her because shes gotta learn…so how does she learn if she doesn’t screw things up? -shrug-
I see the message differently? Its about believing in your dreams and achieving them…

But in Ep. 2 it was Diana who caused the problem due to her supreme belief, even arrogance, in her abilities (and that belief has been inflated by others, including instructors at Nova Luna) and it was Akko who stepped in and tried to stop her from doing more harm.

Actually, I was unfair to Diana. Her initial action did cure a problem. But then she misread the resulting situation and started to do harm until Akko who guessed the true nature of the situation stopped her. Which clearly left Diana shaken. So no doubt she has started the arc of her character development.

You’re not serious, are you? In the OVA the one who broke the seal and let the Dragon out was Diana, and Akko had to clean up her mess. Same with episode 2 of the tv show. Diana almost killed all those butterflies and Akko had to stop her and save them.
The only time when Akko kinda screwed up was in the movie, but even then it was the town boys who really messed up and awakened the giant when they stole the Shiny Rod from Akko.
Akko’s a troublemaker but Diana is generally a bigger danger for the school, mostly due to her arrogance.

Geez, I was going around some forums and websites to find THIS opinion.
Really, I thought I was the only one who dislike the “general messages” that this show’s protagonist(s) and/or just every characters in the anime directly or indirectly trying to convey.
Maybe I’m getting old (heh), because I no longer able to stand shounen anime tropes in general (which, I finally -and subjectively- classify LWA as a shounen anime with female protagonist and magical girls setting).
Or maybe the anime is just not for me no matter how popular it is…

Yeah I don’t blame people that can’t get into LWA due to character actions or being generally annoyed by them, but I love anything studio Trigger does and loved the two LWA OVAs.
I can see this as shounen/magical girls which works for me since those are two genres I can get into easily! Personally I’ve been annoyed at harem leads that are dumb and fall on girls with their hands on their chests or getting caught seeing up a girls skirt and so on! That needs to die…looking at you Fuuka…

Well, I know that it’s just me that can’t really stand the characters, which is too bad actually;
Because I’m really like the setting and atmosphere of the anime, and I’m originally have very high expectation considering the popularity around almost all anime forums.
But yeah, after 3 episodes I really regret that I want to continue watching it for the lore and everything else, but simply couldn’t because of the characters… (except the non-annoying Sucy maybe -heh)

I watched the two available episodes and I’m not really sold on this series. Akko’s too bubbly and frequently made scenes cringy to take in. Sucy is an odd one, so she stands out (and could be good friends with Shokugeki no Soma’s Nao Sadatsuka) in a decent manner but the megane girl whose name I can’t recall has no presence. Apart from that, the general feel was rather dull and I ended up skipping some parts because they didn’t hold my attention. If anything, the scene with the magic butterflies proved a nice sight. I’ll give another episode to see if it’ll incite me to give it a second opinion.

Yes, willing and I’m not fond of my efforts being in vain. A number series every season I’d screen by genre tag, synopsis, looking at the cover and PV and I’d avoid them like the plague.
You seem to have a lot of faith in this show, so I’m guessing you’re a fan from it being in a different media form. Good for you. I understand the show as a whole is 25 episodes long and so far, the performance is underwhelming which leaves me on the fence. It’ll really have to do something for me to stick around.
