MetaVerse – 66 Fall 2016

Fall has been quite fun!

winter15-foshThis is a bit late, but better than nothing right?! I joined Irene and Skylion as we talked about the fall season! This is certainly a odd season with lots of surprise hits such as Flip Flappers, Yuri on Ic, Drifters and Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku just to name a few.

I’m surprised nobody on Metanorn’s been doing Yuri on Ice reviews, given how popular its been with both Western & Japanese fandom, the figureskating community, and most recently the poledancing community.

These things happen? Or in this case, don’t happen? We decide what to cover before the shows come out, and that kinda remains the status quo throughout the season. We really can’t predict all the things, and are just as susceptible to hype, both up and down, as anyone. So we don’t really look for popular shows, just show that look like they’ll be fun to write about, cause that’s really what I think we do here.

Also, I think I might be the most friendly writer to figure skating, and also to changing what I’m writing about after the season starts.

I have watched the first episode of Yuri on Ice! but didn’t know if I was up for another sports show this season, along with Burning Ping Pong Girls. Also, I didn’t like the Yuri / Yuri dynamic at all in the first episode.

That goes away fast and doesn’t come up again until like episode five and six, but at the same time the series isn’t about the two Yuri’s getting along its more about the older Yuri getting his confidence to get back into figure skating imo or something like that? At least the inner/newbie sports fan in me is saying that…

I’m more surprised skylion didn’t cover either Lostorage incited WIXOSS or ViVid Strike! this season. He covered both previous WIXOSS seasons and ViVid Strike! seemed to have his name written all over it.

      • Highway says:

skylion didn’t cover Nanoha Vivid. I did. And pretty much only until it became Vivid Tournament, which is what it seemed like ViVid Strike! was going to be.

      • skylion says:

Yeah, I mentioned that at the end of the podcast; Lostorage just didn’t grab me, I felt they told all the story they could by the end of the second outing, and that one didn’t end very well IMO. So after giving it a couple episodes I didn’t pick it up (I hardly call two episodes a drop). But I did feel somewhat odd that I didn’t continue, and said so.

As for Vivid, the competition angle of the show isn’t my bag…

      • Foshizzel says:

I like the new WIXOSS! I mean does it change things from the previous season? Yes and no, but I like how they connected both series with a few character cameos! As for Vivid Strike I gotta agree with HWY and Sky on it turning into Vivid tournament which gets old fast.

I did stick around for four episodes of the new Vivid Strike and it works for fans of that kinda thing, but personally id rather they return to what Nanoaha was originally meant to be! MAGICAL GIRLS saving the world from evil! Not arena/tournament/boxing girls…

    • Foshizzel says:

I imagine Yuri on Ice being hard to blog weekly due to some episodes being the same overall like all of the training parts and competition parts, but I guess if you were to focus on the characters themselves it could work? That and it probably helps if you are a huge fan of figure staking in general.
