First Impression – Ange Vierge

Sweetness and Light?

Well the answer to the big question this episode is: 12 minutes and 10 seconds, give or take a few seconds and a flashback somewhere in the middle of that…

They came in with a Mirror Ball

If there is a voice actress or character type you like, then you are nothing but embarrassed by riches while watching this particular anime. If you love Sunbeam-chan and Steam-kun, then OH BOY! You really need to stampede in! Because the actual question to the answer above is: So how long was that extended spa/bath scene?

Does this remind you of anything?

OK, so let’s get the basics out of the way. We got ourselves more or less a magitek background. This is the setting for a card game, and now you know as much as I’m willing to educate myself on. It’s a card game, that’s out of the way. So you got five far flung worlds, and each of them has a color and resource coded magic crystal. A cosmic event comes along and links the five worlds, which was a good thing at first, but coming at a price, that being that this thing could end up destroying everyone. Nice thing to call a Ouroborus, more or less.  That’s the background in a nutshell.

But, as is always the case with stories like this, the enemy comes along and characters have to respond…or as the end of the show plays out they can fight each other for practice. Either way, Silver Link has an action show, and they don’t waste time or spare the budget on the set pieces. Everything pops! Colors, lighting, effects and character animation, camera motion. These people don’t fool around. It does a good job of selling the product I would imagine. Unlike the other big cast show, Qualidea CodeI get the feeling that they really are balancing out the powered main character/leaders ,or the α drivers, with the supporting character or Progress-girls with Exceed powers. It breaks it all down by role and support and rank, which I imagine will get more development as the show moves on. The fact that the drivers take massive damage in place of the Progress girls is an interesting spin, as it set’s up a dynamic and counter-dynamic with a single blow. Or a chain of them! It set’s up the feedback loop between the two characters that formed the main emotional focus of the show.

When listening breaks down….

Final Thoughts: This one has a bit more on the ball than Code, but only because everything broke down pretty easily, and the characters compartmentalize themselves really well. It feels like it’s here to flesh out the game play and give it’s purchases some extra depth. Not a bad score, not a bad show, really. It has a great and varied cast and enough for any fan to find a hook in and enjoy. I like that the have differing attitudes to play around with, from aloof the deadly serious to business like. As I said, it’s a large cast that doesn’t really need development, they just have to revolve around the basic characterizations to create the story beats. That’s the neat trick of having a very large cast, if you can keep the pace going….Alright, on to the EXTRAS!

“Find out if AT-X is airing this”

    Got it.

    • skylion says:

I see only the MX and KBS broadcasts…so yeah, keep us posted, get me on twitter, if you find an uncensored bit…

      • Wanderer says:

Someone over on the Animesuki forums reports that AT-X will air this at midnight on the 14th. No source given, nor any report of potential censorship status, but we can hope. This looks like one of those cases where there’s so much censorship it becomes disruptive.

  2. Di Gi Kazune says:

Who let JJ direct this… All the lensflares are interruptive!

Also, I call dibs on Yukarin.

You know, for someone who can control light, Saya is singularly uncreative with her powers. Where are the frikken laser beams? Supercharged fields of photons that vaporize anything that passes through? Why isn’t she taking advantage of the fact that she can be in control of anything and everything anyone sees on the battlefield? Do something other than that short-range laser blade and a cheap dazzle effect. Controlling light can be an awesome power, but she’s not applying any creativity to it.

    • skylion says:

She’s young and needs training still yet. After plenty of that, she can then make illusionary sharks with freekin’ lazer beams on their heads…

    • Highway says:

She is very low-ranked. It’s possible she just does not have the power or competency to do anything more splashy or far-reaching.

  4. BlackBriar says:

For an opener Ange Vierge felt very similar to Kantai Collection: KanColle. Which isn’t a bad thing, really. The ever-present light beams were a hassle to tolerate throughout. Overall, it’s an average but passable series to kill some time. Though not a series one is obligated to follow on a weekly basis so it will be on the lower part of my list this season.

P.S: I hereby claim Almaria into my custody. In other words, she’s off limits to the rest of you roaming poachers!

    • skylion says:

It’s likely I’m not going to do a weekly post, and from this premiere, not even a series review come close to October, but stranger things have happened. Ya’ll can claim whoever…except for the LOLi and Solfina…

  5. HannoX says:

If cleanliness is next to godliness, then these girls are positively angelic and not just the ones with angel wings.

Since light is the visible (to human eyes) part of the electro-magnetic spectrum if Saya advances far enough she should be able to control it all, which would make her very powerful.

    • skylion says:

But if they weren’t so dirty, they wouldn’t need to get so clean?

Yeah, I think Saya could probably end up punch a hole in the world. Or become a very powerful photogenic computer…

      • HannoX says:

They don’t have to be dirty for so much bathing. After all, an ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure. Although in this case it’s more like a dozen pounds of prevention.

    • Sumairii says:

To be technical, light includes the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light, on the other hand, only encompasses the visible range in the electromagnetic spectrum, as you might imagine from the name.

As far as Saya’s abilities go, it remains to be seen how far the show wants to go. To manipulate light is to venture deep into quantum territory, which is like opening a box of undead cats. But somehow I get the feeling Ange Vierge won’t head in this direction.

    “F^ck you JJ Abrams!!”

hahaha skylion you’re a funny man

  7. akagami says:

The force is strong with Sunbeam-chan.

I was actually reminded of the Neuroi from Strike Witches, but I can see how it resembles an egg and mushroom respectively.

  8. Namaewoinai says:

If That Last Show get myself barf (and vomit so hard)… this one is…Uh…I Just Blown my mind!

But at least i want to give this a try…even if it end up failing!
