Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma✫Illya 3rei – 2weitte

This was pretty….heavy handed!

This part of the story was always going to turn out like this it seems. You need time to build up your supporting cast and general direction, and early on is a good spot…but…

Get Along to Get Along

Derp Derp Derp Derp of Pole Derp Derp Derp of Pole Derp Derp…

To be honest, I found it rather artless. For a quick manga read it’s more or less fine, as active reading can keep you occupied with the sheer joy of reading it. But for passive TV watching, this one passed by with seeming little purpose. Here is this character, and they do this, and are for this. Here is another character, and they do this, and are for this. Oh, we got another character, yadda, yadda, yadda. This wasn’t writing as it was only so much expensive adcopy, and it was pretty much there from the source, with little done to make it come more alive to suit the new medium.

Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed my name

But as it stands, we do get a bit more insight into Tanaka-san….oh goodness I can’t take myself seriously when I say that. In so far as character goes, she isn’t quite there yet, is she? She’s more a walking theme than anything else; compelling only in that we are tasked to fill in her negative spaces, even when she isn’t face down on the ground. But, on the semi-(look, I’m trying not to be mean here)positive (that is, thematic) side she is there for Illya to acknowledge the heroic part of herself, that she won’t abandon someone in need, and could get something in return. My complaint is that we know this about our main heroine already, and don’t really need the reinforcement. So…Maybe, MacGuffin? Maybe Mindless? Drop the first hint of the Ainsworth clue?     ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Guilty as charged
But damn it, it ain’t right
There’s someone else controlling me

Next we have what would have been a flawless entry in any other episode or show, but here feels as perfunctory as a Don’t Walk sign at an intersection. I’m a big fan of Rie Kugumya, and a LOLi that is large and in charge is as welcome to me as good news, so Beatrice Flowerchild is one that I’ve been anticipating. Silver Link doesn’t disappoint in pretty much all the major departments, and neither does Kugyu. Except the direction rather does in one spot I featured in my opening image. Oh goodness, that was derp. You can’t have Illya dodge like she did only a moment or two before hand? Anyway, beyond her splashy entrance, Beatrice has to take the usual, “I would kill you now, but I got bigger fish to fry” plot-dumb approach to ending the boastful fight and high-tails it….for reasons…

I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

So then with a hefty one-two punch of some older Fate characters, we get our deeper plot. Kirei is really only here to visually inform the audience what Gil’s appearance actually cements. The Holy Grail War has started, or at least a very altered version of it. I’ll tell non-manga readers right now, this story goes down it’s own distinct rabbit hole, so don’t think it’s a rinse-repeat part of a wash you’ve seen before in Fate/Zero/SN/UBW. But having said that, the HGW is just as thematically high strung here as it’s already going to be any other story. But that’s the future…for now, I have to say I still find the ramen shop owner/mapo tofu joke to be as tedious here as it was in the manga. Kirei is already an oblique character in the Prismaverse, no need to underscore that with a cheap, overused “just an unsuspecting x” trope/difficulty at the beginning trope in the form of devil soup…It’s like Hiroyama knew Mai Kadowaki’s high strung over-reactions for Illya’s voice and hatched a plan with devil soup….

Prisma/Extra

The rest of the story is pretty much as straightforward as the beginning. It had one decent joke with Gil and Illya’s onee-chan exchange, and then it pretty much turned to trope parade 101. Sneak into enemy fortress, and by sheer coincidence escape notice of other big major bad guy character AND find a secret character in an unlikely place, then have that major bad guy come back and block escape. If you didn’t get it already, this flappy cat is disappoint…better luck next episode…

I found the whole episode pretty tedious. From Flowerpot’s “I’m gonna kill you…oh, wait, gotta go.” save, to the uninspired tofu joke dragged through the whole episode to the “Don’t make any loud noises.” “WHAAAAA?!?!?!” and the “Stay inside the rope and they won’t detect us” *drops rope and runs over to cell* to “Tanaka-san’s” Dory routine. A whole episode of “herpa derpa derpy derp.”

Now I have to give credit to Highway for writing a good chunk of the blogpost that I gave up on.

Mmm… Lava in a bowl. Good thing Nyaanta made it. Illya-chi, eat up or else.

    Advice from Tanaka Nakata

    I’m pretty sure that the bowls are reinforced magically since that stuff looks as dangerous as acidic xenomorph blood that will eat though anything… ^^;;

And so we go down the rabbit hole that is Prisma Illya: Heaven’s Feel.

It’s basically hot chili oil. That’s all it is. I would find the real reason behind it being disgusting is not just the heat, but that he uses all the OIL instead of a soup broth!

      It’s a stupid, dumb joke.

yep! I didn’t really laugh either because we’ve seen this dumb bit before with x character eating something so freaking hot and then screaming afterwards OH MY GOD ITS HOT! That is straight out of old school Looney Toons cartoons.

Or going off spoilers from what I researched into the whole dumb tofu thing it makes sense story wise for this scene as to why the characters ate the ramen, but IMO there are far better ways to that!

    • belatkuro says:

Nope, sorry. He’s going to be voiced by Hanae Natsuki, who already made his debut in Fate this week in FGO as Fuuma Kotarou.

Yes for a second episode it was pretty much how id figure it play out, very predictable. luky for Illya, Beatrice started talking to herself because well she already a little crazy.

Got to ‘hand’ it to Beatrice, her voice actress fits like a glove. Thanks for the full screenshot! now to figure out a drawing for her! though nothing to ‘heavly’ ecchi. thats all the lame ness I got sorry!

The tofu shop bit I’d admit was funny, but just seeing Kirei do something a bit out of character was a good laugh, I’ll take a bowl Kirei! I’m always told I have a lead stomach, though lava can eat thought that… tsk

hidden rope thingy was a little ridiculous, but I guess they didn’t wanna use a ‘invisible cloak’ or a ring that makes you invisible… oh wait… I know why.

Illya go save your princess! hopefully she isn’t in another castle… the next episode looks to be a little more fun! see you next week blog thing!

I have to admit, I never liked Kirei as a character in any incarnation; always treated as stupidly obviously evil with little to no intention. So his appearance here is only so much meh.

Goodness, you would do a nice Beatrice. See you next time.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Kirei is what you’d say… an acquired taste.

        • skylion says:

He’s a Nasu character which means he’s overly wordy, overly dramatic, and overly done….and yes, I do realize I’m saying that for a character stuck in the middle of a magical girl show, but Hiroyama was reaching these opening chapters.

        • thorgriim says:

ya true, I only really like Kirer voice actor Nakata, Jouji mostly. head him for the first time in the Fate series so hes always been serious character, so seeing him doing something like this gives me a little chuckle, as well as when i see him in other shows that are less serioius or silly hehe

          • skylion says:

Yeah, I can see the appeal, but as you can tell the character ain’t my bag, so any appearance should be kept on the QT…i think he may have one more “crucial” appearance later on?

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

I just realised that here we indeed have a concoction similar to mapo tofu ramen, albeit much, much less lethal. Or I can imagine it as ramen in Tabasco sauce.

The invisibility cloth actually is something you’ll find out later.

      • thorgriim says:

oh! I see, still the rope thingy was just silly, and silly looking haha

        • skylion says:

You can spice up cheap instant raman with hot sauce, but if I go to a place that makes it’s noodles and broth, then nothing goes into it but my spoon and chopsticks.
