Meta Team’s Summer Anime 2016 Picks

MetaTeam-Summmer16-Picks

(」・ω・)」The short Summer’16 list is here! (/・ω・)/!

winter15-kyoHello, Metanorn readers! Are you missing me? I’m glad for these lists, giving me a chance to get excited about upcoming anime. Though, I haven’t followed the previous season at all but hopefully, I will be starting back this season. Good news is that I have recovered fully and I’m sprinting about as usual. The only difference is that I’m freezing my socks off, while the rest of you are enjoying nice sunshine and beach days! o(´^`)o On to this season, I am looking forward to Handa-kun, Amaama no Inazuma, Days, Battery, Mob Psycho 100, Orange, Shokugeki no Soma and Nanatsu no Taiza continuation. Let’s hear it from the Meta Team on their most awaited Summer series as well. Pay attention to the team members having a similar anime taste to yours for potential top picks.

————————————————————–

winter15-foshEven though Spring just officially ended it felt like summer to me because Florida just naturally jumps from winter to OMFG hot ass summer! Anyway Spring certainly had it’s fair share of personal favorites for me with Boku no Hero Academia, Space Patrol Luluco, Kiznaiver and even Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo kedaruge managed to brighten up my days thanks to Miyano! So what series am I excited to watch and possibly cover for some summer? I have my eyes set on Amanchu, Amaama to Inazuma, Kono Bijutsubu ni wa mondai ga aru, New Game, Love Live! Sunshine and Masou Gakuen HxH; however I plan to try a bit of everything because why not? I am kinda curious about Battery and Days! So what are you hyped to see from the summer season?

Summer16-Fosh[ Amanchu! ] For the first time the world of anime explores scuba diving or has there been some before I know there are a few mangas that explore that, but I vaguely remember a little anime series called Real Drive having some scuba diving elements;however I dropped that after two or three episodes! So anyway Amanchu is coming to us from JC Staff and I did check out the first few chapters of the manga and found it to be quite interesting and hilarious especially whenever we get introduced to Hikari and apparently this series has yuri themes as well? We shall see how that plays out or will Amanchu be like another Yurui Yuri like series? As in the “yuri” bits come off as comical or will it actually turn into a Yuri Bears situation with censored girl on girl action? Personally I don’t think so given that Hikari tends to make really goofy faces whenever she activates her WTF giant head mode or maybe the lead character hooks up with someone else? That is certainly possible…

[ Kono Bijutsubu ni wa mondai ga aru ] For those who follow me on Deviantart, Twitter and Tumblr know I love to draw! From crazy fanart crossovers to creating lots of original characters it’s easily my biggest hobby outside of blogging anime or playing hours of Overwatch, but I have to give credit to Skylion for introducing me to Kono Bijutsubu manga. However, I only managed to read up to the token LOLi Collette’s first appearance and I do remember Subaru always draws 2D girls and doesn’t notice that his childhood friend Mizuki likes him? So yea I sorta expect this series to be more about the laughs and less about the artwork/club activities.

[ Masou Gakuen HxH ] With the likes of such past hits such as Saijaku Muhai no Bahumat and Hundred you would think that would be the last of these flight suit wearing fighting girls vs [insert giant monster here] series we would finally get a break from them right? NOPE NEVER! Now you have prepare Masou Gakuen HxH coming at us which I know is screaming WE’RE TRYING TO BE DxD GUYS even though we all know that is impossible; however HxH is certainly going to try it’s best. So what is this series about? In a nutshell it’s about Kizuna touching girls boobs to gain power! Yep so expect a lot of sunbeams and heavy use of shadows because YAY CENSORSHIP and all that jazz or I suppose you can do what everyone else does and wait a few months for the BD to be released? So I guess if you think the whole idea of one guy touching random girls boobs to gain power being stupid I guess you should skip this one? Because honestly if you plan to watch this expecting some kind of romance, emotional stuff or a deep meaning I would probably laugh at you! Then again DxD kind of has romance thrown in so I guess it’s possible to have the same thing in the world of HxH as well? We shall see…

[ New Game ] Shirobako gave us the abridged guide to making anime and now we’re getting New Game which is about all making video games or are we actually going to see that part? I remember reading the manga a while back or should I say scrolling through the manga because New Game is a 4-koma style series and for the most part it seemed to focus on the various girls goofing around at work. So I honestly wouldn’t hold your breath for this being the video game making equivalent of Shirobaku, but I could be mistaken! Then again I’m all for cute girls doing cute things while doing a random job themed anime.

[ D-Grayman HOLLOW ]  2006-2008 kids rejoice! D-Gray Man is back or do you even care? I am half interested in seeing this old gothic shounen returning and I remember watching all 108 episodes within the span of a few weeks and when I reached that final episode it left me hanging and here it is 8 years later and we’re finally getting the rest? Of course I could have checked out the manga, but my other half feels that D-Grayman kinda missed the revival train of classic shounen with past series like Hunter x Hunter 2011 and Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood back in the day; however I guess the team behind D-Grayman Hollow is trying to revive it otherwise we wouldn’t have this sequel right? So yeah I’m really curious about this series.

winter15-ocI have to say, this season seems to be catering to the ladies. I see lots of reverse harems, sports anime full of hot guys, a sports anime about girls (which doesn’t look like it’ll be completely full of tits and ass), a magical boy anime sequel, and a show about a dude who loves yaoi. I LOVE IT!!!

Summer16-OC

[ Mob Psycho 100 ] There’s something exciting about a main character who will explode if his emotional capacity reaches 100% (whatever that means). I’ve seen some hype around the manga for a while now, and it seems to be quite well-liked as a quirky action show. The art alone is telling how this might not be another cookie-cutter shounen battle series. It looks like a flashy, fun series that should be a rather safe bet.

[ Shokugeki no Soma S2 ] I cheated a little. I started reading the manga and ended up catching up, so I know everything that happens this season. Without spoilers, let’s just say the next few episodes are straight-up cooking battles and prep with little to no nonsense in-between. It’s going to be a very strong season of Shokugeki no Soma, as the competition heats up and the chefs have to pull out more and more advanced techniques. The mix of food porn and softcore porn has always been a staple of Shokugeki no Soma, so I’m still excited to see how it all looks with colour. The anime really brings those mouthwatering dishes to life. While I won’t be blogging this one, I’ll certainly be watching (and drooling) every week.

[ Cheer Danshi! ] Brains Base has always been good at adapting series catered to women (Kuragehime, Amnesia, and Natsume Yuujinchou to some extent). Not all of them turn out well, but when they have good source material to work with, they tend to do a great job. That’s why i’m very excited for the concept of MALE CHEERLEADERS!!! Honestly, there’s nothing else that’s needed to win me over.

[ Amaama to Inazuma ] Oh gosh, this one looks adorable. It’s about a math teacher raising his daughter by himself and going on “cooking adventures” with the help of one of his students. I’m a sucker for any anime about cooking, so this one definitely catches my eye. I’m a little wary about the part where his student helps him cook because that might turn into a skeevy relationship. I just hope it stays pure and cute throughout, because Shokugeki no Soma is all the dirty cooking I need in one season.

[ DAYS ] I’m not a big soccer fan, but if there’s anything sports anime have taught me, it’s that any sport can be interesting in an anime-format. It’s just amazing. While Cheer Danshi! Has me excited with the novelty of male cheerleaders, DAYS looks to be a little less exciting with its choices. You’ve got soccer, a loner genius, and a talentless kid with a lot of passion. It’s really no different from anything we’ve seen before, leaving it as position number 5 on my list, but a sports anime by MAPPA should at least be a tad interesting.

winter15-karaThis seems like it should be a really exciting summer season! I’m still not entirely sure why Sacred Rider XechS is getting an anime since that was an otome game all the way from the PS2 era, but it should be fun regardless! There’s also Love Live! (which to be honest, I’m just excited for it because it means a new pool of idols will appear in LLSIF eventually), and the nostalgic return of my first husbando with D. Gray-Man airing again.

Summer16-Kara[ Danganronpa 3 (Zetsubou-Hen & Mirai-Hen)I’m just considering these two halves as one thing, but I’m actually really excited for both anime! Sure, the last Danganronpa anime was… uh… not the best, but both of these anime are original and are for the purpose of expanding the storylines in the games. There’s also hope in how the writers said they wanted to create anime instead of other games since they wanted to do something that would be hard if they followed the same formula as the games, so that (hopefully) means that this won’t have the same issues as the first anime. Anyways, Zetsubou is the prequel to Danganronpa 2 (…which lacks an anime, but seeing how the first one went, it’s probably for the best) and will probably ruin a few big plot twists for that game, but it should be really interesting seeing how things got to where they were. Mirai is equally interesting since I’m excited to find out what happens after the games and how the characters in the first one are carrying on.

[ D. Gray-Man Hallow ] From the promo art, it looks like this should be some sort of a continuation of where the last anime ended. Whether or not they decide to have some kind of a recap to kind of ease people back into the plot is questionable (but probably needed considering how long ago the first one aired), but the uniforms the characters are in definitely seem like the ones from after all of the Noah’s Ark stuff. Apparently the newest chapters of the manga are really good for plot twists (I’m kind of afraid to start getting attached again because Hoshino-sensei had a lot of health issues/ hiatus time), and the story has a pretty big Kanda arc in the future, so I’d love to see those things animated.

[ Love Live! Sunshine!! ] Yep. I’m excited to see this mainly because collecting waifus (and being denied URs) on LLSIF is pretty much my life, and I am always ready for more waifus. On a more serious note, Love Live! has always been a feel-good show to watch, and it should be a cute, relaxing show to watch this season. And if not, there’s new music and the CG models seem to have leveled up from the original Bokura wa Ima days. The unit singles that just came out are pretty great at least.

[ orange ] This seems like an interesting shoujo based on the premise. The heroine Naho gets a message from her future self about her regrets, and so she gets a chance to fix them and stop a transfer student from dying. The “what if I could fix my mistakes?” aspect is always interesting. Seeing how this is slice of life, I’m not expecting Re:Zero type things happening, but instead, it seems like there could be some nice emotional moments, and moments of growth as the heroine tries to figure out why the actions of her future self were ‘wrong’.

[ Sacred Rider XechS ] This was a game I never played, but from my understanding, it’s like a sentai, rock star/ slice of life genre type thing. …Which sounds weird, but also seems like it could be pretty fun if they manage to merge the whole thing into a quirky mix. The whole plot point about the enemy disappearing as soon as the female character Akira appears seems like a fairly good excuse for the majority of the episodes to be just daily life with her and whatever guy of the week she’s bonding with at least (and also a good excuse for the guys to decide to start a band, I guess).

winter15-highwI think I’ve looked at the summer shows coming up even less than the previous seasons, which for me is less than everyone else anyway. But there are still some things that I’ve heard about that I’ve been interested in seeing.

Summer16-Hwy[ Orange ] When I finished reading Koe no Katachi (which I actually am looking forward to as a movie from Kyoto Animation, who wouldn’t be?), I was looking for some similar stories and one of the big recommendations was Orange. But as I was about to go read it, I heard that it was going to be adapted to an anime this summer. So I didn’t read it, because I think it’s always better to see the video first. But I’m looking forward to seeing this show because it seems to at least glance past a lot of things I like.

[ Amanchu! ] I saw a PV for this show, and absolutely love the art style. I love that JC Staff have carried a lot of the long and liney art style into the anime, and find the look at least initially very intriguing. Plus when you bring in Junichi Satou, you know that the show is going to be quality. Having finished Tamayura (such a sad thing to say), maybe this will be another wonderful feeling to move on to.

[ Masou Gakuen HxH ] That definition of insanity being doing the same thing over and over expecting different results comes to mind. But while the usual result of teenage harem shows and bouncy boobs is less than the best, I think there is always the hope that something will be done a little differently. It’s possible, even if the chance is remote. And when it’s usually the little mistakes that make these shows be annoying, it would be possible to not make those mistakes. I don’t know if I’m insane to hope that things like “Wax-on, Wax-off” boob groping will be minimized (seriously guys, don’t do that! Nobody does that!) but the fact that harem ecchi shows I have liked have existed will keep me watching these new ones.

[ Love Live! Sunshine!! ] Love Live! Sunshine!! – Using up all of the exclamation points, it’s an entirely different series using the Love Live! name. I’ll admit to being a little cynical about this. It’s essentially a completely new series, with a different director, different scriptwriter, and different characters, but trying to capitalize on a look and feel of a tremendously successful series. I think that as a viewer, you have to go into it the same way, that it’s completely new. Don’t look for old characters, relationships, even character slots. There’s no “new Umi” or “new Nico” or “new Honoka”. That might be the hardest thing about this series, being able to separate it from the previous story entirely. But I’ll give it a try.

winter15-skylionDammit, I hate summer. I’m not a hot weather kinda guy. So I guess I’m really lucky to have some air conditioning and cool anime to keep me regulated. Now to my surprise, there isn’t as much to fiddle with as there has been in past seasons, as comparatively little jumps out at me at first blush. So, I’ll have to wait for the premiers to see what kinda trouble I can find without trying to hard.

Summer16-sky[ Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei ]  As if there was any doubt that I would miss this production. Once was good, twice was great, but Herz! was the charm. 3rei promises to be even more charming. There were many fans that felt quite left out in terms of Fate style action the last installment. Well, tough cookies I say. I think Silver Link would be mad to mess up the formula they’ve now spent three years and counting perfecting; that beautiful mix of mad loli madness, their improved and much preferred style of Fate esoterica, and magical girl antics along with a complete lack of endless monologuing is choice! That’s the show I’m waiting for. But, since I’ve been spoiled with the manga, I already know this one is going to be pretty huge in terms of all the backstory. All the hints of the past three seasons brought to light!  It’s such a large story, I’m willing to bet right now that this will be a split show same as 2wei. That hardly bothers me any longer, because as I said, Silver Link is in fantastic form with this franchise. See me here for the weekly fix!

[ Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars ] Goodness. Something Something Something Past Days, Repeat the Somethings Fantasy Kingdom, OMG OMG OMG Mecha Attacks! One can assume that it get’s real after all that..with cute loliesque characters designed by Sora no Method’s QP; flapper. It’s an original property, so I can’t really go off of much, can I? Other than design nothing really stands out. I’m hoping it’s not another Comet Lucifer repeat in terms of characterization and story, but we’ll see if Actas can capture that Garupan magic in a fantasy mech series!

[ Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! ] He may give me credit, but I think Fosh introduced me to this one soon after he got me into Gakkou Gurashi. It’s a smashing good manga with a very charming, light hearted sort of “will he notice her feelings, can she spell them out clearly” sort of vibe. Both leads are very clueless, but neither one of them are spiteful or mean. Goodness Club Prez and Collette will bring the crazy business that is for sure. Studio feel. is a fantastic fit for this one, and the PV really sells that fact. It’s very much like it came to life off of the page. I’m looking forward to the smiles this one brings.

[ Amaama to Inazuma ] Speaking of smiles, we’ve got another adorable one added to the list. Looks like a lot of my fellow bloggers are interested in seeing this one. I’ve only sampled a couple of chapter of the manga, but darn it’s good. Very well paced, with a recipe in each chapter for all the home cooks out there! Of course, the little girl, Tsmugi, steals the show. But I’m also looking forward to Kotori as voiced by fan-favorite, Saori Hayami. If you liked Barakamon or Usagi Drop you’ll love this.

[ Qualidea Code ] Well never let it be said that I’m not drawn to some repetitive stuff. It seems that my tank can run low when it comes to the need to see shows like 35 Shoutai, Blade Dance, AbsoDuo, etc. And this one looks so much like those. But I’ll wait til it comes out before I say any more. Goodness, I’m like a moth to flame! I mean, it’s either this or Ange Vierge, and that one at least has Hanazawa as a loli angel so It’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that I’ll cover one of these things. Or it could be that Time Travel Girl one….

spring15-irenesSummer in here! My favorite time of year. Last season had some really good series (Boku no Hero, Re: Zero, Tanaka-kun) and some really disappointing duds (KnK and Joker Game) to it. But hey! It’s a new season. It’s a new day. Time to see some new originals, some old reliables, and some (hopefully nice) surprises. There will be a few that will be continuing on of note, such as Kuromukuro, so while summer isn’t exactly packed to the brim with tantalizing options, we will have a couple of cool holdovers from Spring as well. Before I begin my picks, I wanted to give some honorable mentions that I’ll be interested in checking out: Handa-kunBarakamon was a surprise hit for me and I loved every minute of watching Handa and the adorable Naru learn life lessons together. Since this series is a prequel and thus will be missing the cute-little-girl component, it fell lower on my list, but I will still be checking it out this summer. Amaama to Inazuma–another slice of life with family hurt/comfort/healing dynamics. It looks to be a cute father/daughter story, so I’m willing to give it a whirl. Regalia:Three Sacred Stars– Yeah, it seems to be gushingly overflowing with moeness and lolis, but it also has mechs and so really cool looking animation. Also, the plot, as vague as it is, sounds enticing enough for me to give it a try.

Summer16-Irene[ Arslan Senki: Fuujin Ranbu ] Come on guys, you knew better than to think that I would be missing out on this! After a bit of a break, we are finally back in the land of Pars and Crown Prince Arslan’s fight to regain his kingdom back from zealous invaders. Arslan was one of the first series that I covered here on Metanorn and he and I go way back. I am so excited for this new series and seeing the continued saga from where it ended last year. There is only one small, teeny-tiny problem, and that’s that for some reason, they have relegated this story to have only 8 episodes….eight episodes, really? Not even a full cour? The first season was 2 cour, 26 episodes of greatness and now we’ve been cut down to only 8 episodes?! Well, if that isn’t just annoying. It doesn’t decrease my excitement one iota, but it does give me pause to wonder.

[ 91 Days ] I was burned this last season by the last historical period anime that I decided to take a chance on. However, I really can’t help myself, I love history and find period anime, especially of ones that take place in America, intriguing to me. This original series from Studio Shuka, takes place in a fictional American town during Prohibition era, where the mafia and gangsters reign and the law is nowhere to be seen. This is a story dealing with revenge, and it doesn’t seem to be played up for laughs or for action, so I’m going to go with tragedy. A man who has nothing to lose is getting vengeance for the murder of his family is nothing new, and yet, I’m willing to see where they are going to go with it.

[ Tales of Zestiria the X ] I have honestly not even heard of the “Tales” series until now. I have no idea of anything that goes on in the games, having never been an avid game player (or really any sort of video game player) in the first place. However, I do have a lot of experience in animation, and one of the biggest anime names in that area as of recently, is studio ufotable of Fate/Stay Night and God Eater fame. They’ve actually been in the business of doing Tales adaptations before, including Tales of Symphonia, and even a Tales of Zestiria special from a couple of years ago. I have actually seen a few episode of Tales of the Abyss from some years back, though I never knew it was connected to this series at the time. And now that I have a better understanding, I’m going to guess that the Tales series is a lot like Final Fantasy, which I’m a lot more familiar with. Anyway, other than the name, the animation, the amazing soundtrack, and the fact that this is going to be an action fantasy, I really don’t much else in regards to this series. And yet, for all the reasons that I just listed, it’s worth a try.

[ Nejimaki Seirei Senki: Tenkyou no Alderamin ] In the case of the most anticipated series of the season, Arslan, my favorite character in it happens to be Narsus. In one of my favorite series of all time, Code Geass, my favorite character is Lelouch. In one of my favorite TV series on TV, Sherlock, my favorite character is, well–Sherlock. So, what do all of these characters have in common? It’s that they tend to solve their problems and fight their battles not with simply brawn and bravado, but rather with their minds, using their profound intellects to win of tactics and strategy both on and off the battlefield. Alderamin of the Sky, is a series about a fantasy world at war, and tells the story of a bunch of military kids from the upper echelon of society that are following in their parents footsteps. All that is, except one. Ikta would like nothing better than to simply be lazy and charm women. The only problem with that is…is that he happens to be born with the mind of an expert strategist and tactician, and that brain is going to drag his unwilling self into some tight and very interesting situations.  Based on a light novel and put forth by studio Madhouse, I’m going to be very interested in what kind of story this underdog of a series is able to pull off.

[ TABOO TATTOO ] A lot of action, yelling, fighting, lights, and superpowers are going to be expected here. We have a boy whose good a martial arts but a little dumb in the head, meets a girl who is all buttkicking all the time, who happens to be after him because of a strange symbol he received a stranger whose life he saved. The tattoo of course gives him amazing powers, but it also paints a giant bullseye on his chest. Yeah…it’s pretty standard stuff here. However, I like superpowers and I like action, and I’m interested in where they take this series.

winter15-sumaTSummer16-sumahis year’s summer season is nearly upon us, and there are quite a few shows to look forward to. Notably, there is a surprising lack of fanservice shows and an influx of reverse harems or shows otherwise aimed at a female audience, which is actually a rather nice change of pace. In any case, I’m definitely most excited for Amaama to Inazuma, ReLife, and Orange.

[ Amaama to Inazuma ]  The premise of a single father trying to cook up something good for his young daughter has the potential to make for a very cute and heartwarming show. And it doesn’t hurt that the artwork looks fluffy and colorful. Plus, they even managed to snag Rina Endou (Hina from Barakamon) to play yet another little girl! It truly impresses me to hear such talent from someone so young, and I’m looking forward to her performance in this upcoming anime.

[ ReLife ] This is about a 27 year old man who escapes from the reality of his unsuccessful life and attends high school again as a 17 year old thanks to some mysterious drugs. I’m rather curious as to whether he can manage to blend in with the kids despite a 10 year age gap. But whether or not he succeeds, we can be sure that the company behind the drugs is up to something shady at the main character’s expense.

[ Orange ] A time travel story of sorts, we have a girl who receives a letter allegedly written by her future self. Its contents warn her of the mistakes she will make, especially regarding the new transfer student. There are a number of ways such a setup can unfold, depending on the amount of drama the author is hoping to create, which is what makes this kind of story so fun. Will our heroine’s actions be futile, with the letter becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy? Or will she be able to avoid the regrets foretold?

Rejoice everyone! For everyone gets hellishly spicy Mapo Tofu Ramen!

    • skylion says:

    • Foshizzel says:

Why do you always sound like a broken record whenever Fate/Whatever is mentioned? Always with the same derp comment about spicy mapo tofu? Is that all Fate/Stay is to you? Lol i’m sorry I fail to see the hilarity behind it.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

It is a in-series joke about who likes mapo tofu, why he eats it, how corrosive it is to the gut, what Prillya did to the said character, and how badass that said character is in the Nasuverse.

Also, in other unrelated news, YAY!

        • skylion says:

What we are trying to say is that you’ve made the “joke” repeatedly…So much so that is has stopped being funny, and seems to be the bulk of your comments (seems to be!). So…get new material. Longer material. You know, some different content…and not just the zingers.

::sigh:: please don’t link ANN artless not related to the actual post, folks.

  2. Namaewoinai says:

OK I’am going to speak about this, i know it’s just rare to yell about it

    So here are my pics:
1.) Orange – Hmm, i ditch out Boku Machi really but i do read the manga, I also read this too, and yeah it’s great, Now let’s see how this anime adaptation goes?
2.) Regalia – THIS maybe for me the MECHA show on this year…if, and only IF they executing it and properly written it really well, and if they do they can even topped this one at least, for what i see there the staff there seem to be somehow new…well we shall see, also ACTAS, Hmmm They got a little chance of succeeding it… (Oh Yeah Girls und panzer)
    3.) Love Live Sunshine! – Hmph…Well…Why not!?
4.) NEW GAME! MTK never fails to impress me…even it has some little flaws in it.
5.) Amanchu! Junichi Satou is back…with a vengence?! OOPS!!

    Other Possible Picks:
    – Berserk: i would try it out this one…
    – 91 days: American History in a eastern influence…whoa
    – Ange Vierge: ….uh….yeah i take this!

Well…I think that all o could say

    • skylion says:

Regalia – Yeah the staff behind this show is pretty new creatively speaking, so I don’t think it will be topping Kurumukuro any time soon.

Amanchu – I think we can all look forward to the day that healing anime comes back with a take no prisoners attitude, and builds up to a roaring rampage of revenge.

    • IreneSharda says:

Hmm, you think Regalia might be good enough to join the talks of Mechanorn? We’ll see…

  3. MR.KLAC says:

well look like making comeback this summer 2016 anime give continue magic illya s4.

as for rest of summer give might go with HxH a chance yet if 3rd option maybe depends on interest.

yet do plan catch-up other 2016 anime season give dub version also coming up to see also.

    • skylion says:

Yay for 3rei! It looks like HxH will be this season’s Hundred.

      • Highway says:

For all the grief I give Hundred for ripping off other shows (which continued to the very last: now we have idols singing to cancel out the effects of the bad guys singing! Well, Macross Delta did only just start this season…), it wasn’t the worst show of the genre. Not good, but not worst.

        • skylion says:

…and that distinction would go to?

          • Highway says:

Man, I can’t come up with the worst, but there are definitely ones that are worse than Hundred. Shinmai Maou 2nd season, everything Maken-Ki, Manyuu Hikenchou (which I still never made it past 10 minutes of), Isuca, IS (story-wise, for sure). And I’m sure the list goes on.

    • BlackBriar says:

well look like making comeback this summer 2016 anime give continue magic illya s4

Technically, Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 3rei!! will be season 3. The cour that played Summer 2015 continued right where Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei! left off at the end of Summer 2014 to finish that arc’s story. So you can say Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei Herz! was season 2.5

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

Moar Illya route! Moar loliciousness. Moar sweet cute Ko-Gil.

Note: Illya is really older than Shirou. I try not to think too much of how the continuity should be working. 😛

Anime News: Blue Exorcist Manga Gets New TV Anime Series

    • SherrisLok says:

Honestly, as a big fan of the franchise I’m not rejoicing. It will probably be a lazy adaptation of one of the manga arcs, similar to what Kuroshitsuji~The Book of Circus~ did, and that’s a big no-no for me. Gee, no matter how much I like FMA (the first TV series and the manga), I could have never brought myself to watch Brotherhood – why would I waste so much time following the same story as in the manga?

  5. zztop says:

Irenesharda: … for some reason, they have relegated [Arslan S2] to have only 8 episodes… really? Not even a full cour?

In fact, Arslan S2 and the Nanatsu no Taizai special are sharing the same cour. Arslan airs its 8 episodes first, then Nanatsu airs its 4 eps.

It’s likely Arslan S2 is just to conclude the first half of the Arslan saga, which roughly covers the first 7 volumes of the source novels. Author Tanaka Yoshiki says the 16th volume will end the series, right after he finishes writing his latest novel.
    http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-05-20/next-heroic-legend-of-arslan-novel-volume-will-be-the-last/.102264

Considering that last time there was a 7 year hiatus between vols 10 and 11, the finale may take some time to be written!

    • skylion says:

Long hiatus between volumes, big epic tale, story of rulers…so expect characters to die in the show but be alive in the book? Or vice versa? Who does this mangaka think they are, GRRM? Nah, there ain’t been any boobs yet…

    • IreneSharda says:

I had heard about that, I just wish they could have give it it’s own separate cour and not just mixed it together with Seven Deadly Sins.

I guess I will be happy if it just leads to a fulfilling conclusion, though I would be even happier if they at least were able to finish a majority of the saga.

So, he’s finally finishing the series? Well I’ll believe it when it happens.

    • BlackBriar says:

A 7 year hiatus in between immediate volumes? It’s a surprise and a blessing for the author that readers didn’t give up on the series altogether for such a lengthy period. An evaporation of patience would’ve been expected halfway through.

  6. zztop says:

So far I’ve no confirmed picks for the Summer season; I’ll be keeping an open mind as the titles come out. I may look at D-Gray Man S2, but mostly for Katura Hoshino’s art (I loved her designs for Valvrave the Liberator).

I’m surprised no one’s mentioning Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love Season 2 (I think Kyokai briefly introduced its Season 1). Considering S2’s only being made due to how well S1 Blurays sold, I’d be interested to see how the writing team up their game for S2’s plot whilst keeping the magic of the first.

Irenesharda:I was burned this last season by the last historical period anime that I decided to take a chance on.

Are you talking about Joker Game? Because people who read the source novels say the story’s supposed to be like that – an anthology of separate stories about nihilistic Japanese spies who live only for their job and nothing else. Not the most compelling characters, but if that was the author’s intention…

    • SherrisLok says:

Can’t speak for everyone who’s seen it, but my main grip with Joker Game is the lack of plausibility and reason. Plus at one point it became tiring to watch knowing that the D agency will succeed every time.

    • IreneSharda says:

I am interested in Binan since I did enjoy the zaniness of the first season. But it’s still pretty far down on my list compared to the others.

As for Joker Game, yeah that. I understand what the author meant to do and how the novels were written. That’s fine for novels. However, the director and the writers should have done a better job in adapting them. What works for a book doesn’t necessarily work for television or movies, and I think that that was JG’s biggest problem. Doing a direct adaptation can sometimes do more harm than good.

      • zztop says:

The only time I’ve seen the Japanese take a LOT of creative liberties with a source manga/novel is when they adapt them for live-action movies, and even then the results can be mixed.

I do remember Joker Game being done as a live action movie, although the story was rewritten as a more action-adventure movie with even less political elements to it – have you seen that one yet?

        • IreneSharda says:

I haven’t actually seen it, but I have seen the PVs for it. I think the show should have probably taken a similar approach as the movie.

  7. SherrisLok says:

I can’t wait to see the new Binan.
91 Days is still a big mystery. It may be epic or laughable. I really hope they employed someone knowledgeable about that particular period for supervision.

    • skylion says:

I think period pieces are in an odd place. They’re outside most of the “normal places” you see anime; not a high school, no magic girls or mechs or monster people etc. So eyes on are them to be outside the norm on just about every level, so expectations are all over the map.

      • SherrisLok says:

It’s a bit of a curse, really. I think historical anime attracts a more demanding audience, who is also more likely to judge a show harshly for even slight missteps.

        • skylion says:

…oh, my yes. History fans know exactly what to look for (and in some cases we think we know exactly what to look for), and get pretty salty when it’s not presented like we want. So with that in mind, I’ll got into something like 91 Days with an open mind.

    • IreneSharda says:

It’s actually funny that they set this up in Prohibition era and it takes place in a town called “Lawless”. There was a move out not long ago with Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf, which was also called Lawless and delt with bootlegging and crooked cops and just a bit of revenge.

I wonder if that movie was any sort of inspiration?

  8. Rathje says:

Been following ReLife in manga form, and it’s currently my favorite manga series I’m following.

It manages to really nail the difference in outlook between a late-twenties adult and high school students. And refreshingly, it doesn’t treat the high school students like idiots or make tropes out of them – “the tsundere”, “the perverted information-broker bro-friend”, “the loud athletic girl”, “the rich ojou-sama” you get the idea.

No real tropes or stereotypes. The teenagers actually act pretty intelligently – which believe it or not – is how most teenagers are. Little fan-service, no pandering or exploitation of the characters.

I enjoyed every release of the manga. Very interested to see if they get the voice talent to fill the story’s shoes.

    • skylion says:

Well, expectations are out there for sure. Let’s see if the show can live up to it…

    • Highway says:

I’m wondering if anyone will do much for talking about ReLife. CR is putting all the episodes up tomorrow for subscribers. So will people space them out? Watch them all over the weekend? Watch all night Friday? So be careful about reading anything about the show if you want to watch it without spoilers.

    • ProtoSovereign says:

I haven’t read the manga, infact I didn’t know there was a manga at all until your comment Rathje, but just from the premise I’m surprised not a lot of people are hyped for ReLife.

  9. BlackBriar says:

Well, this is some madness. Sequels to some of last year’s good shows are getting nerfed by smaller episode totals. That’s not pleasing one bit. That aside, everything else gives the most “trial and error” feel I haven’t felt in a while.

    Top 5 picks:

91 Days: A mafia revenge story? That’s a good lure to attract viewers. After recently finishing with Joker Game which, though episodic, did well enough to hold my attention, I’m up for another anime centered around the 20th century. Also in anticipation is the show’s opening theme song “Signal” by TK, the vocalist from Ling Tosite Sigure, the group behind the OPs for both seasons and the movie for Psycho-Pass. The last time TK did a solo was “unravel”, the OP for Tokyo Ghoul’s first season back in Summer 2014.

Arslan Senki: Fuujin Ranbu: With last season’s open ended finale, it’s only natural I’d be consumed with curiosity as to what would happen next. But the duration news is disappointing. It’s hard to imagine anything wrapping up nicely in 8 episodes when some shows can’t do it with 12.

Nanatsu no Taizai: Seisen no Shirushi: Didn’t even know Nanatsu had another project up and running. A pleasant surprise.

Shokugeki no Soma: Ni no Sara: Time to readopt the rule of not watching on an empty stomach. Last season was so awesome I still rewatch episodes from time to time. Aside from Soma, I missed Megumi, Erina and Alice (Especially when she’s abusing her aide Ryo). The sequel couldn’t come soon enough but boy, did it rain on the parade that there’ll only be 13 episode.

Taboo Tattoo: Looking at the synopsis and trailer, I can easily get into this and enjoy it. The one aspect that forces me to face palm is the choice of names for some of the characters. Particularly the main guy and girl.

    Moderate:
    Servamp
    D.Gray-man Hallow
    Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA 3rei!!
    Hitori no Shita: the outcast
    Qualidea Code
    Tales of Zestiria the X

    Low:
Active Raid: Kidou Kyoushuushitsu Dai Hakkei 2
    Ange Vierge
DANGANRONPA 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen – Mirai-Hen
DANGANRONPA 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen – Zetsubou-hen

  10. Noc says:

All I really need in life is Mob.

But, I quite enjoy the Kono Bijutsu manga, so I’m looking forward to that too.

I’ll be watching the first episode of everything as usual in any case!

    • skylion says:

Oh, c’mon, you can do more than an over-hyped Bones show, right? Well, for all you need in life. I’d want food and oxygen first…then anime 🙂

But yes, I look forward to Kono Bijustsu as well…

      • Noc says:

No, no, skylion – it’s not what you think! For you see, I’ve been a faithful follower of the manga for some time now. OMP is a fun ride, but Mob is my favorite ONE manga by far. I was originally a little hesitant when I heard BONES had picked it up considering that their usual style didn’t really scream ‘Mob’ to me, but the PVs have won me over. Food and oxygen are pretty great too ^^

Hmm, there are a few others I’m a bit interested in – Time Travel Shoujo looks like an unusually lighthearted take on the genre, and I love period pieces so I guess we’ll be getting several in one go. Amaama to Inazuma is featuring a rare father-daughter relationship which should be nice. I’ve heard good things about Orange. I liked Barakamon so I might like Handa-kun…

And I’m sure there’ll be ones that surprise me. I feel like I should have more action-oriented shows under my belt, but I’ve been fickle with them in recent years…

        • skylion says:

You’ve got a bunch of very good choices there. If you like action, you can join me in Prisma Illya 3rei, I guess. It will get to action eventually…Regalia is a mecha show, so it might get actiony…

  11. akagami says:

So spring was pretty disappointing for me, 12 out of the 19 managed to stick, although I picked up Anne Happy, which I skipped based on the initial premise but ended up being pretty good. Only 1 out of the must watch was dropped (Gyakuten Saiban aka Ace Attorney really turned out to be bad as an anime adaption), and almost all of my meh list got whacked. Not bad me, not bad.

Summer previews came out late, and since I avoid trailers, I’m previewing the season pretty much as it’s about to air. Better get my schedule set asap!

    Euro 2016 Contenders
    ____________
ReLIFE – Being transfered back in time or into game/fantasy worlds is a really popular theme in LN/mangas these days… not that I’m complaining! I’ve been eating them all up, and while I never got into the manga of this one, the premise sounds intriguing. Ohhhh, all the things I would have done with my experience (and… maturity?) differently. Like be the evil boss of the schoolyard. Dominate all the kids! MWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA.. *cough*
Love Live! Sunshine!! – I’m conflicted. I enjoyed Love Live (I wouldn’t call myself a Love Live fan, more of an idol-genre anime fan and Love Live just happened to fit the bill), but this new cast of girls look like the B-team. Welp, won’t know till I try it!
Arslan Senki: Fuujin Ranbu – YAYYYYY, more Arslan goodness. More ARROWS PEW PEW. If you haven’t seen the first season and like a good plot-driven fantasy story, watch it first, then watch this!
Tales of Zestiria The X – I’ve become a Tales convert junkie, and will definitely watch this. Well, I’ll watch it after I finish the game. But I’m definitely going to watch it.
Taboo Tattoo – This looks to be interesting. You mean an actual future anime where it’s not the UN but the US is in power? What blasphemy! The designs are decent, and while it seems to have a lot of similarity to Big Order, I’m sincerely (wishing with all my heart) it’s not the total unexpected trainwreck that BO was.
Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars – Cute girls, cute mecha, yup. And what’s that you say? No CGI? OMG SIGN ME UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! – Cute character designs, school setting, romance, comedy. I feel my anime has been severely lacking in this total package lately.
Amanchu! – I have no idea what this is about, except it comes from Amano Kozue who created Aria, which is healing in anime form.
Qualidea Code – This looks like awesome. It smells of awesome. Top tier script-writers (Speakeasy), animation (A-1 Pictures), and music (LiSA, ClariS). I don’t need to know anything more, I’ll take it all please. This is going to be my go-to action show this season.

    I like Wimbledon pie
    ____________
Fukigen na Mononokean – For some reason youkai hit this unknown sweet spot of anime cravings I get, even though I don’t go out looking for them. Plus there’s comedy and I like the character designs, and a chibi fox youkai?! Yessss….. which reminds me, I still need to watch Natsume Yuujinchou. One of these days, I promise!
Hatsukoi Monster – Harem comedy, I am in. Buuuutttttt, really, a 15yo asking out and then finding out they’re 9yo (that’s gr5 give or take)…. whatttttttttt that’s beyond ridiculous. “Hello officer, why I thought they were 15 as well.” orz
NEW GAME! – Anime about the anime/manga/LN industry have been a big hit or miss in my books. Specifics about the industry don’t really interest me, so it’ll come down to whether or not I click with the characters.
Amaama to Inazuma – Slice-of-life are almost always a win. But this one has a little kid, and the VA work for kids can make or break a show for me. If they’re screechy and whiny (i.e. Flora from Asterisk War had me cringing all over and fast-forwarding her parts) I won’t last, especially when they’re a main character. Here’s hoping it’s at least tolerable!
D.Gray-man HALLOW – It feels like forever since I watched this. While I don’t remember much, I remember enough that I enjoyed it, so I’ll be sure to stick around and catch more Exorcism~
SERVAMP – I’m not a big vampire fan (or supernatural, or horror, or… well I’m sure you all already know that). However it looks like it’ll have a healthy heaping of action and comedy, and it sounds fun to drag a kid who likes sewing and cooking into the world of blood and biting and… other stuff. Well, why not?
Nejimaki Seirei Senki: Tenkyou no Alderamin – Really like this manga, but I really hate the artistic liberties they took with the character designs. It looks just horrible… And the colors look so bland… I’m hoping this will be good, but I have a feeling the animation is going to be of suck levels. Hopefully Madhouse proves me wrong.

    Remain… or Leave?
    ____________
Rewrite – Key has lost my vote of confidence in recent history (actually to be fair, I only liked Clannad, but he chose the wrong girl). And the character designs are pretty bland. I’m going to give this a spin, but I don’t have any high or moderate expectations.
Masou Gakuen HxH – I’m probably going to drop this. The huge amount of PLOT in this series just screams for me to drop it. But against my better judgement, I’m going to try it out. And I don’t know why.
Scared Rider Xechs – I’m very strongly reminded of Sacred Seven. Is that a good thing?
Ange Vierge – I’ve only had one or two card-game adaptions I’ve liked, but SILVER LINK is at the helm, so I’m willing to dip my toes in.

I thought about watching orange, but I read a bit of the manga, and it just didn’t really tickle my interest. The guy is just way too mopey and dull/boring. I think I’ll wait to catch the general opinion before deciding if I’ll pick it up.

So 20 shows, and the field looks pretty wide open. I’ll take it (although I’d also say the same of 30 must-see shows, because I like to make myself suffer)! I’ve been making good progress on the backlog, but unfortunately that means I’ve fallen behind on One Piece (゚´Д`゚)゚

    • skylion says:

Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! I think Studio .feel really has a good handle on this one. The PV material really does feel like the manga is popping right off the page. It’s still of my favorite cutesy romances, and I’m happy to see it adapted. Maybe .feel can do Boku Girl?

Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars Yes, this is one I have a strong angle on. I loved Sora no Method (despite feeling it went on a bit too long) and I love the character design by QP; Flapper they’ve done here. I mean, they can’t do a show like Comet Lucifer again, can they? That’s what really throws my instincts off. I thought that that show would be cool, but it turned out really off.

Ange Vierge This just reminds me way to much of Luck and Logic. I mean, I really love the stuff that Doga Koba does. But when you start doing card game adaptions….you’re studio is screaming that they gots to pay all the bills, right? But….I”m like a moth to flame for this sh*t…

      • akagami says:

Hmmmm, that get’s me excited for Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!. I’m not a huge fan of artistic liberties generally unless the source material needs a push to make the medium change successful. I don’t think I’ve ever read Boku Girl. A quick summary looks like it’s a trap comedy?

I couldn’t finish Sora no Method (can’t remember why, something just didn’t click so I dropped it). I think I got at least 1/3 to halfway through. Comet Lucifer I somehow finished, which like you skylion, was totally different than what my expectations were going in.

Funny that you mention Luck and Logic. It wasn’t anything special, but I really enjoyed watching it. Sometimes you just need that good filler because not everything needs to be cream.

        • skylion says:

Boku Girl is always recommended. Sure, you could call it a trap if you want to, that’s not wrong, but it’s not exactly right either; that’s explained in the first few chapters so no big. But, in getting back to Kono Bijustsu, .feel just feels right in this adaptation, it’s director struck with Minimi-ke through thick and thin…that’s worthy of my respect.

It’s OK to not finish shows, if they don’t click they don’t click.

Luck&Logic was just kinda painful to watch as I didn’t feel like anything got developed; like the producers didn’t care so long as they got paid….

          • akagami says:

So I read the first chapter (EX), and it looks like hentai? Does a dream sequence count as hentai? I’m hesitant to continue, does it focus more on comedy or are those levels of ecchi still present?

I don’t mind stuff like in TLR/TLRD, but this just seems to go beyond just ecchi.

            • skylion says:

It does not go into hentai territory, but it does rely on ecchi for a good portion of it’s comedy. If you can take TLR, they you can take this one…

            • akagami says:

Hmm, guess I might give it a shot. The EX chapter had a dream sex sequence, which was pretty graphic – that’s why I was wondering if it was hentai.

            • skylion says:

Yes, I can see where you might get that impression.

    • BlackBriar says:

I’m with you on Arslan Senki. Though I do hope you’re prepared for a short lived run since the second season’s episode count has been cut down to 1/3 of what the first season’s was. I just can’t wrap my mind around that and not feel disappointed.

I’m not a big vampire fan

Hey, if you need any help with that, you need only consult yours truly. 😛

I saw that! Why 8??? That’s no way to get a satisfying conclusion. Although I’m not familiar with the source material, I’m hoping it’s just to finish one arc and then we get S3!

        • BlackBriar says:

That’s not only sequel suffering this Summer. The second season to Shokugeki no Soma is getting 13 episodes whereas the first had 24.
