Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! – 10 [END]

KonoSuba - tfw you find out you're a criminal

Congratulations! You’re a criminal!

winter15-highw It’s time for the much fabled Destroyer. Oft hinted at, but few have lived to tell the tale of fighting it, but right now it’s headed right for the Town of Axel. Do our lucky adventurers stand any chance of actually stopping this thing that has rampaged for presumably decades?

Got to Laugh, Cause I Know I’m Gonna Die

KonoSuba - Kazuma is not giving up

Aqua sure packs up fast, doesn’t she?

Well, that is, after Kazuma makes the executive decision that he’s going to fight, contra to Megumin and Aqua’s plan to get outta dodge. And who can blame him? He finally got a nice house with a nice bed to sleep in, even if it’s not his. So with a simple question to Aqua – “Can’t you break it’s magic shield?” – hopes start to go up, especially with the addition of Wiz to the fighting force. I really liked how Megumin didn’t immediately assume that the “strange-headed girl” was her, and that she pushed back on them calling her that. If we’re talking about which of the party members is strangest, I think Megumin would be in the bottom 2. But a little reputation can go a long way.

KonoSuba - Hey!

“Hey, don’t look at me when you’re calling me strange names!”

KonoSuba - galvanized to action

Megumin’s gonna prove how awesome she is

The plan is pretty darn straightforward: Break the shield, Blow up The Destroyer. It was even executed well, with Aqua finally putting all her effort into something besides partying, and producing quite the impressive shield breaker spell. The moment is a little bit too big for Megumin, until a little bit of piss-taking by Kazuma brings her focus back to showing how great her explosion magic is. Still and all, she has to admit that Wiz outclasses her at least in magic power. I do kind of wonder if that was also one of those moments for Rie Takahashi, who while playing Futaba Ichinose in Sore ga Seiyuu, got some tips from Yui Horie, even getting to be on stage with her, but now she’s really teaming up with her to blow up the Destroyer as almost equals.

KonoSuba - Wiz's just looks a little better

Wiz’s is just a liiiiiittle bit flashier, tho

Shout It Out Loud

KonoSuba - Don't call me Lalatina

“Don’t call me that!”

KonoSuba - Can't keep Darkness down

I’m still not tired of this face on Darkness

The show did work in some genre awareness, too, with Kazuma warning people not to roll out the cliches when they think they’ve won. Too late. It’s not over yet. Darkness didn’t get to do too much this episode despite giving up her secret origin and her name “Lalatina”, but she was the clarion call of trouble with her finely tuned nose for danger. And it was perfectly in keeping with the spirit of KonoSuba when they find the one person’s corpse still inside the Destroyer, along with his journal, talking about the sheer idiocy that led to the Destroyer in the first place. A weapon he didn’t want to make, the ridiculous conditions they kept meeting, and then when it all went wrong, the realization that he was the idiot that made this thing. Oh well, might as well ride it out.

KonoSuba - aaaaaaaa

That strangled “eeeeee” that Wiz made in this scene always makes me crack up

Kazuma’s assurance that his luck will help them out by sending the Coronatite somewhere into the world is not a bad guess, but it doesn’t really work out that way. They did manage to save the town, but hopefully we’ll get to see what happens to Kazuma when the show picks up again, if we can believe the end card saying that they have confirmed a season two production. I tend not to believe them until they start airing, after Nyan Koi!

KonoSuba - So close

Kazuma thought he was so close…

Overall Thoughts

KonoSuba - one last harassment

One last harassment

From the first episode, KonoSuba has been one of my favorites this season, and has managed to keep the quality of comedy high throughout the whole series, even if it was shorter than I wanted it to be at only 10 episodes. The main cast worked really well in balancing out the funny situations, not letting one person be the comedian or the straight man. They passed around comic and straight-man roles as needed, and that helped to keep the laughs fresh and free-flowing in all directions, keeping it from making one character always be the butt of jokes.

KonoSuba - kabloom

Going from this scene, to the closeups of the flowers and the birds,
you thought they’d destroyed the town, but…

KonoSuba - Nice establishing shot

They used this as a great establishing shot to show the town was still fine.

Studio Deen, as I said they would at the beginning of the series, did a good job bringing it to the screen, with hardly anything to complain about visually and great adaptation of comedy, something that we sometimes take for granted, but as some shows have shown us, can be a difficult thing to get right. The voice acting by all the main characters was great, with the individual quirks of each character really standing out. And I haven’t mentioned it all season, but the ED is really precious, with the tilt/shift style images and that song that is just so sweet. Really, I don’t think there’s anything to complain about with this series, except that it didn’t have more episodes. So a hearty BOOOOOOO! for this great series to be finished so soon, but I’ll be looking forward to when we can see more.

Well, let’s Lick it Up here.

This is the funnier version of Grimgar that’s for sure. I would love to see a member swap between the two shows. Ranta for Aqua perhaps? Or would that spoil the humor?

Kazuma’s assurance that his luck will help them out by sending the Coronatite somewhere into the world is not a bad guess, but it doesn’t really work out that way

…it works for the plot, which is a very good reason to have a goofy power like this; it beats stealing panties!I hope that they move him along a bit for the eventual season two; and I think it will happen. But I want to see the character evolve a little more, maybe work off him being able to “control” his party, cause that will never stop being funny.

As you say, very well constructed show from start to finish with some many fun and sweet grace notes. Megu was a run-a-way favorite of mine, and has to be one of Rie Takahashi favorite roles, as she just owned it from the moment the character was on.

…man the first show of the season is over so soon.

I’ll be looking forward to when we can see more of Konosuba.

Season 2 was confirmed at the end of the episode – no specifics yet though. Even the anime staff were shocked to hear Konosuba was that popular to immediately get S2.

Like I said, that trick’s been done before. Sometimes it’s for real, sometimes it’s not. So I’ll believe it when it’s actually on the schedule for a future season.

This guy just cannot catch a break. I feel sorry that Kazuma has to deal with all this bad luck.

  4. HannoX says:

Apparently Kazuma’s luck score isn’t as high as he thinks it is. Or it comes with strings attached.

Megumin might not have cared for her nickname of Crazy Girl, but she should have been happy that the other adventurers thought she was the only one among them who could handle Destroyer. After all, that was acknowledging the power of her explosion magic.

This show was consistently funny from start to finish. Most of that lies with the writing, but the personalities and quirks of the characters allowed the writers to switch to whichever character would work best for the humor in a particular scene. And of course the VAs did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life.

    • skylion says:

I think that when you use a force like that, like magical luck, it ends up using you to balance the scales. Now, how this particular situation balances any one scale or another is anyone’s guess, but that’s magical luck for ya.

    • Highway says:

Well, if you’re considering that luck is an attribute, it would probably act in many different ways. Perhaps it’s the high luck score that allowed them to even teleport the Coronatite away in the first place. And maybe having it blow up the Overlord’s palace is a net benefit to everyone. I even like it as a device to get Kazuma and his party out of Axel and into the rest of the world.

      • Krono says:

        Wasn’t that his plan anyway?

        • Highway says:

To leave the town? Possibly. But he also had a nice comfy house. And a crazy party. So it’s a goal, but it’s certainly not a pressing need. Sometimes people need that kick in the butt to get moving.

          • Krono says:

Well they just made it seem like he was going to go out and actually, actively fight against the Demon King after they received their reward. He said something about how “this long, terrible tutorial is finally over” and some other stuff they made me think he wanted to go out and kick some butt.

            • ProtoSovereign says:

Nah Kazuma probably won’t fight the demon lord unless he really has to. Its to dangerous and he just wants to live like a wealthy HikkiNEET.

      • ProtoSovereign says:

Its mentioned that the landlord, Alderp is universally hated and despised for being a real arse of a noble. So it did do the world a net benefit having his mansion blown to smithereens. Not that that fact is going to help Kazuma against the authorities since Alderp is indeed an influential noble, and Kazuma is fame aside and nobody.

Megumin, will you please use your greatest Explosion! on Spammy?
