Welcome back to MetaFAP
Summer Metafap is over, but there were plenty of choices from the Fall season to pick from with Shinmai Maou, Valkyrie Drive and Shomin Sample even though most people would easily consider Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry and Gakusen Toshi Asterisk as worthy MetaFap choices as well; however Highway is doing a fine job with those two series.

Don’t you just love co-ed sports festivals in anime? They always open the door for lots of hilarious ecchi moments like that balloon breaking mini-game between Mio, Basara and Yuki? Damn those two were really into it, but of course we all know it was inside Maria’s perverted imagination! Once again I gotta hand it to Maria for keeping things fun as always. Besides the fake out with Maria we also had Kurumi at the school doing a super cool magical investigation which caused Nanao to reveal his secret to Basara about being a vampire? After their short fight Basara managed to figured out that Chisato Hasegawa isn’t the evil mastermind at the school, instead it was Mamoru Sakazaki and apparently he is a god? Wow that is even more evidence that Shinmai Maou wants to be High School DxD because they also have Gods and I can’t overlook Nanao being a vampire like Gasper of DxD minus the cross dressing bits of course! Anyway this was an interesting episode and I fully expect Nanao to join team Basara once he figures out that Basara wasn’t really going to kill him. Oh and I almost forgot Basara lost an arm! OH CRAP! Then again I bet there is some dumb magic spell or time reverse thing to restore his arm back to normal or maybe he will make a contract with a dragon and get a super cool arm thingy! Yeah ill try to knock off the DxD comparisons soon.

Ah yes don’t you just love weddings?! I was surprised how easily Mamori excepted the whole idea, but honestly she is really really really dumb! I don’t like characters that simply go along with whatever they are told and on top of that those characters have a habit of repeating everything the other character says to them in the form of a question! Like for example evil character says. “you’re a weapon.” and the dumb character says “I’m a weapon?” I know that is how some people act in the real world, but for some reason it annoys me. Story wise that we learned that Mamori and the other weapon girls at this school have a virus inside of them that causes their strange transformations and they are paired off with others to use them as weapons. Oh and Mirei is some kind of rumored soldier that had a partner who either died or was taken away on a random mission? We do see that girl in the opening so I assume she was taken away and probably turned evil for the hell of it? Yeah I’m curious to see what they do with that side story, but for now I hope things focus on Mamori and why her weapon form is crazy powerful besides being the main character. So was anyone else surprised that Mirei is actually fifteen years old while Mamori is only sixteen?! I found it to be really funny.

Well, the show just keeps missing the flow. So far this has been a pretty disappointing adaptation of a very well done manga. Most of the gags out stay the welcome, as if the production needs to milk nearly every single one for as long as possible.
Kujou is about as amused as I am….
Now, I think it’s to pad out the run time to the full 20+ minutes the broadcast slot needs. As I said last time, much of the comedy is derived from how quick witted it’s delivered. Sure the timing is more relaxed with Reiko, but not as dead-weight and overdrawn as the cup noodle gag was here; weak tea as that sort of fish-out-of-water approach already is. In the manga they played that for effect with brevity and for humor, but the effect here is: get this over with will ya? In the long run, it got the point across, and because it still lacked Aika’s presence that plot point is still in motion.
Oh no… the repartee that existed between both Aika and Kimito is pretty much DOA on the screen. On the page you get that you’ve got a battle of witless vs almost has wits, and the humor plays off in how far either will go into each other’s specific territory. Kimito can barely keep up with just how far Aika will dig herself in. Aika lacks the social skills to call his bluffs. That had a sweet little back and forth on the page. Here is just lifeless and absurd, with both character kinda stuck in the mud. The running gag that Aika goes into, “GETS” is basically her doing an SNL catchphrase badly, and she’s supposed to, nothing wrong with that as it’s part of her charm. But like much of the humor it just got lost in the mud. She does, however, pull off the Jojo gag with style, that I’ll give high marks for. The panty gag also worked out, so it’s not all lost.
Now, as far as the show improving? Well, they’ve got the chops. The interaction between both Kimio and Kujou is focused and delivers. It can get across a basic plot point with natural interaction and humor. They’ve got the characters more or less down, but for the sake of comedy, more in this case is bringing less to the table. I’m hoping by next episode, with the addition of both Hakua and Karen they will be able to economize the characterization and can right the ship and sail straight into the humor and genuinely engaging characters I was expecting. There’s still a pretty good story here that’s worth telling.
Yeah, this joke can last six or seven minutes…
They can at least get panty humor right…
..and yeah, he’s that type of protagonist…

It’s kind of frustrating watching Shomin Sample and every key scene, my mind keep going back to the manga and thinking “oh, this scene seemed so much better on paper”… It’s like being a huge 50 shades of gray fangirl and watching the movie and getting like “meeeeeh, that was weird”. I’m not a 50 shades of gray fangirl. Just saying.
I’m really hoping they pick up the pace. Because first, the slow pace doesn’t fit my image of Shomin Sample. Second, there’s so much content to be explored, if they keep the snail pace, much of it isn’t going to make the cut to the anime.
And I’d really wish they’d improve the OST, though I doubt they will.

From what little I’ve read from the manga the pace of that goes from 0 to 100 fast! Characters go nuts, but in anime form it feels slower for some reason? I am noticing that they are focused on hitting those “funny moments” ripped from the manga like the cellphone, Instant noodle eating and troll fake powers parts so I wonder if they are trying to hard to hit those moments?
Personally I want the other girls to pop up soon because Aika is fun character and all but can we get some new faces? Please?

With some gags you have to make sure you “hit the cheapseats” so to speak….everyone, from the quickest on the uptake to the dumbest piece of lumber in the audience has to get on the same page before you can move on to the next gag.

Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid – 02 [NSFW]: Charlotte’s full of BS telling Mamori what she’ll go through is a simple matchmaking. A Church, that wedding dress and the atmosphere that came with… How could she not get the wrong impression?
I don’t see how Mamori couldn’t accept what she was told she was. She was shown hard evidence of her weapon transformation through a video. Even if she doesn’t remember the transformation herself, she knew she was there in the battle prior to that. It would be hard to ignore such irrefutable proof.
Who wouldn’t? A mature and capable looking, well endowed, battle hardened girl being younger than the pacifist, shy, defenseless girl beside her… The thought wouldn’t even cross the mind.

The age thing feels more like a attempt at a poor joke, but I guess Mamori having her first kiss stolen by somebody younger is some kind of turn on for the hardcore yuri crowd or people who love gaps in age between characters? Whatever the case it made me laugh so maybe it was a successful joke.

Ah, the plot thickens by adding Gods? Man, why are gods and angels usually such pricks. Every single time, they’ve got to be authoritarian, self-righteous A-holes. Well, I guess it comes with the wings.
Mermaid: RE: Meifon. Are AAA cups even sold anywhere? Is that just a tank top? A scarf? You canna provide support for what doesn’t needs support. Still, she’s a good character in a pinch. In an island full of self-serving jerks, she’s one that is at least transparent, doing it for money. No hidden agenda there.
I like the combo of our POV characters in Mamori being shy and reluctant and Mirei being bad-ass yet taciturn. I mean, Mirei obviously knows what it going on, but not even torture would make her start talking.

Ohhh I saw a spoiler on which character is an angel and you are correct whenever there are gods around you can bet your ass there are angels!
Mermaid: Yeah I am curious about her even though she will probably be the character who works both sides for a quick buck, but in that world why not? I bet she is either super weak or doesn’t even have a weapon partner? I can’t imagine anyone working with someone so sneaky.
It does make for some unique dynamics between the two and I don’t mind Mamori’s cute voice so it works for me!

Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst – 02: The creators should be arrested for cruelty. Seamlessly putting us into Maria’s erotic fantasy then slapping us out of it was the worst. I thought that was actually happening so the reveal left me feeling cheated.
I find it amusing how any time a person sees someone before them with blood red eyes, their first thought runs to said someone being a vampire. At this point, I’m not sure whether Tachibana is one or not, I’ll wait for confirmation but it goes to show how greatly revered vampires are in anime/manga. They really do stand atop the supernatural pyramid. YES!!!
Kudos to Basara sniffing out the mastermind. I, myself, bought into Sakazaki’s story for a while until Basara’s accusations and facts supporting them starting making sense. I certainly didn’t Sakazaki being a god coming. So, at this point, you have to ask: What other kind of creature isn’t hiding in that school?

Well all signs point too it being true! The cape, those odd bat horns, the teeth, glowing eyes and mind control? Yeah those are all traits of vampire stuffs. I wouldn’t say revered more like easy to use and easy to setup and yeah yeah I know vampires are on the top only because Japan LOVES them but demons and zombie/ghouls are right behind them.
Kudos or badly written mystery? I know we have gods, possible vampires, demons, succubus, demon slayers or whatever Basara and the other two are and I know for a fact thanks to a few spoilers we will have an angel later.

Yeah, it’s apparent vampires are front and center. But don’t forget, the Japanese love their demon lords as well. We already have Shinmai as an example.
For me, vampires are always first place and after watching Tokyo Ghoul, Ghouls come in for close second.

Yeah with every passing season of anime we tend to get more demons and vampire anime every year which is either a bad thing or good depending on the crowd.
Id rather Tokyo Ghoul anime stay at the bottom and never return ever again even though I heard rumors of a possible third season? I hope it stays a rumor! As for the manga I just can’t read it because the anime gave me a bad impression of Kaneki and personally I don’t even care about the character so why read it?

This is where we differ, Fosh. I hope it’s more than a rumor because I quite enjoyed both seasons for what they are and if the manga is better (A herd of people will probably say “yes”), that’s just an added bonus. I don’t mind Kaneki and I really like the other Ghoul characters along with their whole world in general. They’re a lot more inteesting than watching dull, everyday humans.
