mecha 24

More mechs!

winter15-fosh Welcome back to more Mechanorn! Fear not Irene joined us this week and there was a bit of Mecha news including the announcement of another Gundam called Gundam Thunderbolt which is probably going to be one most of the newer fans skip because it’s part of the old school timeline, but if me and Irenesharda are correct it might be more of an OVA much like Gundam Origin, also there was a bit of Macross news with Delta finally getting a preview so look forward to that on Mechanorn in the future.

  1. JPNIgor says:

I saw a very funny comparison around which states the recent evolution of mecha anime. It goes something along the lines of:

    Gundam -> MC takes an OP mecha to slay an entire army;
    Code Geass -> MC masterfully commands a mecha army to win a war;
Aldnoah;Zero -> MC uses a random (though different-colored) training mecha and uses his wits to win impossible fights
Heavy Object -> wait, the MC doesn’t have a mecha?!

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Hahahah… Except the mere mention of a/z here is dangerous.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

Gundam is always about the OP mecha. Because it sells Gunpla.

Code Geass actually had a decent ending. Lulu sacrificing himself for his cause and ideals.

a/z – we shall not talk about it.

      • JPNIgor says:

What? What’s so dangerous about A/Z that it must not be talked about? I think I’m out of the loop .-.

        • IreneSharda says:

We don’t talk about “the show that shall not be named” in these here parts.

It opens too many wounds and it’s a show that doesn’t deserve speakin’ about.

          • BlackBriar says:

Hahaha! Speak for yourself on this one, my dear. Given how I already have a minimal liking of the mecha genre and didn’t think much of the series to begin with, I’m always able to push it away. Hence the name doesn’t bother me. 😉

You can say those values, for me, dulled the stigma that afflicts you. However, I can understand your sentiment since I suffered an unpleasant, repulsive stigma in my own department last season.

        • Di Gi Kazune says:

Find the last episode thread. That will be enough explaination.

          • JPNIgor says:

Woah, didn’t see that the backlash was so harsh ’round here. For me, it was so-so, so I don’t feel the same way as you guys. But I’m going to refrain from mentioning it again…

            Can I say AZ?…

          • BlackBriar says:

Boy, was that an ugly scene… 😛

            • Di Gi Kazune says:

All I can remember out of that thread was:

              Show ▼

Yes, the scene was indeed ugly especially when we wrote endings to correct the ending.

    • Foshizzel says:

That is an interesting list and true about all of them.

  2. zztop says:

Iron Blooded Orphans: McGillis has a 9 yr old child bride? I didn’t know Gundam was going to become THAT kind of anime! (o_o”)

Being Australia is suffering in this universe. They’re the only one nation missing a huge chunk of land where Sydney and Canberra shoule be.

    • Di Gi Kazune says:

And then suddenly out of the Rad Outback, comes Furiosa in her Mad Max Mobile Suit and stomps over everything.

Ah… one can only dream and hope…

    • Foshizzel says:

Well McGillis isn’t happy about it either lol

There is some fun Gundam trivia from ANN on Australia! In episode 4, a map of the Earth shows the continent of Australia having a circular cut where Sydney should be. This could mean that the Post-Disaster era may be related to the Universal Century timeline, as Sydney was destroyed by a Colony drop in U.C. 0079

      • IreneSharda says:

Australia is always getting messed up in mecha. It’s been hit more than once in Gundam. Even “the show that shall not be named”, destroyed large chunks of it. But then again, it blew up large chunks of pretty much every continent.

        • zztop says:

That show was different, because everyone got some as well.

Here, it just looks like Australia’s being unfairly singled out. No other country has a huge piece missing.

          • skylion says:

Memo: When outlining my huge war thriller, must remember to take equal chucks out of all the continents. Even Antarctica, cause you’re f@cked too, penguins…

          • IreneSharda says:

Why does the crater always have to take out Sydney? Why can’t it ever hit the center of Australia? Then the continent could look like a weird donut, rather than a cookie with a bite out of it.

            • skylion says:

If it took out south-central, would it look like a croissant? And yes…I did say croissant with a French accent…

            • Highway says:

NOBODY wants anything to do with the center of Australia, not even people dropping giant bombs. They’re afraid all the damn venomous animals will turn radioactive or something and get even bigger. Or they’ll get special powers. “Oh great, there’s an invisible Brown snake in here, we might as well just kill ourselves now.” “Oh, that giant Funnelweb Spider is in the rock garden.”

Yeah, F that noise. We’ll just nuke the humans…

            • Di Gi Kazune says:

Australia, the most dangerous continent in the world. Where not only the fauna will kill you, the flora will as well.

Ah, those were the days living there. :3

  3. Highway says:

Comet Lucifer just let everyone be stupid again. Along with completely unrealistic reactions. DoMon completely freaks out about the typhoon and his wrecked roof (as he should), but then next day it’s “Roof Fixing Lackadaisical Party!” There’s no way they actually get that finished in that amount of time. And then the typhoon starts and those blithering morons “Have to go to school”? Whuuuut? It was just transparently idiotic to get them out of the building.

The whole show is just stupid followed by stupid stacked on top of stupid.

    • skylion says:

      …you forgot the dancing vegetables…

    • JPNIgor says:

But… The character design is cool…

And the opening theme is cute…

Ok, this is going downhill so far, gotta admit it. It’s like they are trying to mesh in slice of life, mecha, romance, Menma and edgy villains in a messy mess.

    • IreneSharda says:

Yes, I have to admit, the writers totally dropped the ball in setting up all those contrivences just to get Felia alone to be kidnapped.

I mean, you leave a kid alone in a house is bad enough (especially when the kid has the mind of a toddler). If the whole place burned down, it’s all Don Mon’s fault. And then the kids have to go to school, when the government has already issued a warning that the typhoon was coming that day…my city will shut down school in very cold weather and in snowstorms. I consider a typhoon to be even worse than that.

And honestly, with Alfried’s ridiculous hacking network, I’m amazed he didn’t find Felia about a second after Gus told them that’s who he was looking for. It’s not like the girl is trying to hide.

    • Painboy says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees this. During the stupid vegetable dancing affair I kept waiting for them to suddenly start singing the Japanese equivalent of “Be our Guest.”

I also can’t help but wonder at people’s reactions to things that should be inspiring awe, terror, or at least a mild sense of caution. Are little girls who have telekinesis and teleporting battlemechs a common feature of city life? Do pilotless construction mechs suddenly go crazy and start attacking little girls a couple times a month?

It’s such shame a too as the animation is quite good and the mecha and character designs are interesting and well done.

      • IreneSharda says:

It’s weird. They suggest that there are superpowers in this world and people know about it, but it hasn’t been fully approached yet.

        Also:

        • Highway says:

          That… wasn’t awful.

          • IreneSharda says:

What? You don’t like a Japanese singer trying his best to do a French accent using a language that largely relies on inflection to relate meaning? 😛

Though, I do have to say that he certainly is doing an admirable job rolling those “R”s. It’s very hard to get English speaking students to be able to do that. It must be even harder in Japanese considering the “R” seems to have an even lighter sound there.

            • Di Gi Kazune says:

              Tale as old as time.
              True as it came be.
              Barely even friends.
              Then somebody breaks.
              Unexpectly…

Now you have made me want to dig out that CD…

            • IreneSharda says:

I was doing a whole Beauty and Beast motif for my coverage of Snow White with the Red Hair. I’m wondering whether to continue that for the next season, or change to another fairy tale.

But I am a self-professed Disney-phile (especially the Disney Princess line), so I know pretty much every song by heart and they are always on hand in some form or another.

  4. skylion says:

Heavy: I’m just going to have to call this show Light…as in light in plot, light in characterization, light in weight. War means stakes, people threatened, lives on the line. This one has all the meaning of a bland video game.

As for the fanservice debate. My only justification is that there is some meaning behind it. She’s alone, fragile, and just a young girl inside a huge machine. She’s vulnerable. But, good luck getting that into the weak empathy machine that is the modern otaku.

Comet ::facepalms:: I’m trying to temper my expectations a bit. Maybe this show is for little kids. No, I don’t think that works. At least it doesn’t excuse the plot dumb going on. Very poorly written and conceived. It has a few bright moments, but that get’s clobbered by the dumb.

Orphans: Wow, you guys went on for a looooong time. I only had time to listen to a bit. But, call me an official fan of this one. It has clear stakes, and they are really building something up. I can invest in the “good guys” and the “bad guys”, it has weight and scope. Kudos to Okada.

    • Highway says:

Heavy Object is heavy on one thing: Dialogue. They never shut up… ever.

      • skylion says:

See, that would be fine if it wasn’t just stings of technobabble. It’s like listening to a character say, “I’m going to kill you now”, over and over and over again.

        JUST DO IT, ALREADY!

    • skylion says:

…and what is Samsura’s beef with TVtropes? It’s a useful way to discuss narrative tropes, that’s what you’re doing…talking about the narratives.

      • IreneSharda says:

I like TV tropes, it points out traits in characters and stories that you see all the time but never really had a name for until now. Also, it’s just fun to read. 🙂

        • skylion says:

It’s a great tool. Codified references, cross-referencing, fun entries. I wouldn’t have discovered Madoka or K-ON without it, cause at the time four years back I wasn’t plugged into any anime at the time. I found SHAFT anime from there, and I just kept going down the anime rabbit hole. I found Metanorn just searching for review sites after that.

      • Di Gi Kazune says:

It used to be good. Until the Great Purge. Then it started taking itself too seriously. (The irony…)

    • IreneSharda says:

Heavy: Well, to be fair, there are plenty of lives on the line and people being threatened in the last 4 episodes. Even our MCs have been threatened with death several times, however, we also know that none of them are really going to die (though maybe they’ll one day get rid of Milinda for shock value? and character progression in Qwen?), so it does seem false. And yet, it doesn’t bother me here as much as it did in other series (such as “the show that shall not be named”), however, we’ll have to see how long that lasts.

Comet: As JPNIgor said, it’s a very weird amalgam of a show. It has a dancing, flying veggies and yet it has a psycho kid that will brutally murder and entire room of guards with blood everywhere. It’s got some pretty bad writing moments, but some pretty good ones too. I’m still interested, though it does get pretty dumb at times.

      Orphans:
Yeah, I can talk about Orphans all day. It’s a really good show, and it’s probably the best Gundam series I’ve seen in a while. It’s my favorite show the season hands down. And the best parts aren’t even the fights, though those are awesome, it’s the relationship between these boys and especially Mika, Orga, and their leadership circle.

      • skylion says:

Heavy: Not buying that. Two screaming dudes that you admit are bullet-proof ain’t stakes.

Comet: It still has it’s charm points, and it’s early days, maybe they got the derp out first?

Orphans:Agreed! I mean, I don’t have the fandom legacy you guys have, but this is a good outing.

  5. IreneSharda says:

I forgot a few things that I thought of later on after the talk:

    Comet Lucifer:
So exactly why is Moana trying to stop Felia from using her powers? She keeps acting like it’s the end of the world if she uses her telekinesis, but nothing ever really happens. Will she turn evil or something. What can’t the rock snake just explain?

    Gundam IBO:
It’s been said that McGillis and Gaelio are from these 7 legendary noble families that formed Gjallarhorn. So, they are definitely people that Corel wants to keep happy.

But anyway, I’m really wondering why McGillis and Gaelio will be fighting against Tekkadan? As of right now, it’s really only the Mars branch of Gjallarhorn that is out for Kudelia’s life. I can’t see McGillis and Gaelio and their men joining up in this front. They have no problem with what Kudelia is doing and are even trying to find evidence against Corel for what he’s doing. In fact Gjallarhorn doesn’t even seem that concerned with the independence movement. Corel just wants to kill Kudelia to spark more unrest and get more funds because of it. McGillis and Gaelio are more interested in weeding out corruption. So, what could turn them against Kudelia and Tekkadan?

Or could it even be a bigger twist that the two eventually join forces with the orphans? I’m interested in why two pretty straight and narrow guys would end up being the antagonists. And now I’m even wondering, will they be at all?

    • skylion says:

Comet: Moana, “Must exposit! Can’t until new script comes in! False sense of tension….fading….”

    • Highway says:

I thought the reason that Coral wanted to kill Kudelia was because he was hired to do it. And if he doesn’t execute the contract, there will be lots of problems.

And Moura wants Felia to not use her powers because showing off and danger.

      • IreneSharda says:

But Moura’s even trying to stop her from using her powers in front of a bunch of people who all already know? Why? And it’s not like she checks to see if someone else is watching or anything. Her main focus seems to be that Felia is simply using them at all. Why?

As for Corel, it was explained in both last episode and this one, that Kudelia was supposed to be killed to spark angry rebellious violence on Mars as a result, which would allow the Mars Branch of Gjallarhorn to respond with heavy violence in order to quell it, which would allowed them to receive more money from their sponsors, such as Nobliss (who is also giving money to Kudelia herself). With more money coming from these independent sources, they wouldn’t have to be worried about Gjallarhorn inspection which would normally control the about of budget the branch gets, and also would probably find out the money is getting squandered.
Kudelia’s father sold her out by reporting her location to them, which allowed them to actually start the operation. At least, that’s all I got from all of what Coral’s been saying.

  6. IreneSharda says:

Also, we forgot to post the links to Todo’s (AKA Derp Hitler) Journal that is posted on the CGS website that Sunrise’s PR department put together.

    Someone has translated it here.

There have also been three more posts since these, but they haven’t been translated by anyone yet. However, from what Google Translate tells me, it talks more about Kudelia and her father, the situation on Mars, and Todo’s complaints about it, while he’s at a bar.

  7. Painboy says:

BTW where are you all watching Gundam IBO? I have been using CR but you all always seem to be an episode ahead of me.
