MetaVerse: Spring ’15 – 06
Aiz on the Prize (and more) on this week’s MetaVerse!
——————————
Hey folks! Samsura joins me to talk about how Ninja Slayer has came along since a less-than-stellar received beginning, mushrooms eating burgers, brainstorming, and Aiz being Bell’s prize. We also talk about main characters and how they’re written in good and bad ways in anime.

Yeah… I got lazy with no music this week. Go to youtube and enjoy your nightcores or whatever. Hope you liked the ep, and I will see ya next week with a different writer. Hoshi? Kara? anaaga? lvlln? Highway? Kyon? IreneSharda? These are my remaining options. Place your bets now on who I’ll choose next!

Dungeon:In the manga version, Bell immediately becomes a dual-weapons wielder after getting Hestia’s Knife. He uses both the Knife and his original dagger in combat. The anime seems to have left this out.
The LNs explain that in Soma’s Familia, Soma’s around, but he’s completely obsessed with wine-brewing with little interest in anything else (Loki gives the impression of him being like a shut-in, wine-brewing otaku).
Apart from his “money for drinks” policy to fund his hobby, he leaves the Familia to its own devices and never gets involved. Hence the awful situation.

Seraph: Human experimentation is a staple of Kagami Takaya’s writings. At some point, someone’s already been subject to freakish biological upgrades.
So the comment about Yuu being 10% inhuman in the latest ep may have some future bearing on later eps.

Huh? Out of curiosity, what made you bring up Seraph here?
POWUH: Meta Resident and LN Informant with 1529 comments
I was under the impression that no one was covering Seraph as its own independent post, but still covering it in the podcasts.
Besides, I think there was one comment post on another anime that spun out into a Seraph discussion, IIRC.

Oh! You mean IreneShara’s post on the 4th episode of Arslan Senki. Yeah, that easily derailed into a Seraph discussion since she’s still watching and she started the derailing at the first comment of the section.

Oh, you have no idea.

No complaints here. I’m patient. However, there will be a lynch mob with ropes, torches and pitch forks waiting if the promise isn’t delivered at all.
@Jrow: You’re wrong on what Rage of Bahamut originated from. Adapted not from a card game but a smart phone game. Which is still pleasantly surprising considering game to anime adaptations don’t do so well. BlazBlue is a prime example though I’ve not played the game but seen it through some YouTube videos.
Kekkai Sensen treaded into new territory with a heartfelt episode this week and reward was worth the risk. The delivery men (I assume that’s what they are) beating on the poor mushroom guy left me in a foul mood. I wanted to beat them to a pulp. Not to mention what one of them did to Leonardo.

I’ve played RoB, and it’s just like Sam claims, it was so not fun. But it is a card game! And it is a mobile game! It’s two in one!

Let’s see… My bets on who will join next week is either Karakuri or IreneSharda.

Great podcast again Jrow and Samsura!
Ninja Slayer: I continue to feel that it comes off as a goofy adult swim series given the level of WTF and randomness, but these past episodes have actually shown us that Ninja Slayer can be so much more! I like the story so far even though most people laugh at the thought of it having any kind of “story” but it is there believe it or not.
Blood Blockade Battlefront: Funny thing for me with this burger themed episode was the voice actors who play Leo and the mushroom alien! Both of them also starred in Smile Precure as sibling fairies so it was kind of a mini reunion for me to hear both of them together! Oh and the mushroom alien is also Chopper from One Piece but I am sure Jrow caught that fast. Besides that oh my god what a heartbreaking episode with the beatdown of the mushroom alien! WHYYYY HES SO CUTE DON’T KICK HIS ASS! Anyway I like how Rie Kugimiya voices white and black so I guess those siblings are a yin yang? I assume black is evil while white is good, but who knows! Maybe it’s in reverse?
RomCom Snafu S2: IDK why I watch this anymore I really really really can’t stand Hiki! I just do not feel anything for him or his problems, but I guess that is how were supposed to feel or am I completely missing the point? I know they want to show him getting out of his shell and opening up to the others but wow I think he is awful as a main character.
Dungeon: Now I understand why everyone hated that episode! The solution at the end wow wow wow such terrible writing just to “heal” the problem around illy, but I never really think highly of Dungeon after episode three with Hestia giving Bell the knife? That TOOK FOREVER JUST GIVE HIM THE KNIFE! Instead Hestia wanted to make it some epic moment for Bell which really didn’t happen…
Main Character Writer: !00000000000000% Towards Kirito as being a bad MC! I would also throw in Shu from Guilty Crown, Hiki from Snafu, Touma from Index even though I love me some Index, Ichigo from Bleach, Ange from Cross Ange, Inaho and Slain from Aldnoah.

It surprises me to see no mention of Haruto Tokishima (Kakumeiki Valvrave) and Tatsuya Shiba (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei) since I know you’re not lenient on those two, either.

Fosh, I’d like to commission a drawing of a Blandy McBlanpants character. Can you do it?
Also with regards to Kikigaya, my interpretation has always been that no, he is not a likeable person. The problems he is facing right now stem 95% from his own actions. I watch this show not necessarily because of how much I like the characters, but the nuances that you see here compared to a lot of the other shows out there are one of its biggest selling points. I would also say Hikigaya fails as a self-insert character, because I would hope normal people don’t aspire to be him. It is another story if you are a socially awkward misanthrope however…

Ninja Slayer Excaliburface.jpeg That really is all I can say.
SNAFU, Too I dunno if this is the show for me any longer. It feels way to drug out, featuring somewhat over-blown lines and situations. Or maybe I just don’t really feel like the Student Council or Iroha are a compelling set of storylines. It had a great inning during the opening two episodes, but this arc is kinda tedious. I was happy to see it “end”, and she accepted the presidency. Feels like that burned flap of skin you screw around with on the roof of your mouth after getting it zorched on hot chocolate.
Dungeon “I wanted to save you because you’re you” It was a nice sentiment. But….facepalm…

Let me share my opinion and see if I’m in the same area of thought as you.
Earlier this season, I had the feeling that character interactions and thought processes are handled in a way to make the characters think about every step they take and think in almost “if this, then that” scenarios for all of the important events they encounter (with, of course, self-interest at the forefront). The series has Hachiman and some other characters thinking in very calculated ways, which can lead to some overblown lines and make storylines feel like they drag out.
Part of me likes that about Snafu, another part of me feels like it’s too thickly applied (not sure that’s a phrase), and I think it shows more in arcs like this one now where the story is subpar.
POWUH: and LOLi Defender with 10998 comments
Yeah, it sounds like we overlap on a few points. I can see where you like certain bits, as I’m more favorable than not towards them as well. And like you, thickly applied just about covers it. It feels they are walking a slack-rope and are getting caught somewhere in the middle.
