Yoru no Yatterman – 04

YATTERMA (7)

Don’t you just want to pinch those cheeks?!

After four episodes I find myself quite hooked on this hidden gem of the winter season, but what do you think so far? I feel out of all the new shows we are reviewing on Metanorn this one needs more love even though I think the artstyle might scare a few people off…

————————–

The heroes never win

YATTERMA (6)

You can’t win them all Leopard…

With two new allies you would think things would be going smooth for Leopard and her team right? Sadly it seems wherever they try to help it ends up causing more harm than good because the Yatterman are ticked off, but of course we wouldn’t have much of a story if they gave up on their quest huh? That said this episode took us to another run down area where Leopard and friends meet Mitchan and Gatchan who run a restaurant and they also have a baby on the way. When I saw these new characters being set up I though to myself Wow I swear this series sets things up for us to think something bad is going to happen and boy does it! I was kind of suprised how fast the Yatterman arrived in the town, but the most shocking moment was when they forced Gatchan to join them in the yatter kingdom for thirty-five years? I was like damn how is that even fair? I get the impression the poor people are brainwashed or scared to death of the Yatterman Kingdom? I guess they do hold the most power and that is the main plot so far with Leopard teaching the weak to fight back huh? To make matters worse when Leopard tried to take them away it pushed Gatchan to sell them out after striking a deal with General Goroh! Seriously why did he even believe the General in the first place? I guess he was thinking about his baby being born without him being around and it blinded him and now Mitchan is super angry at the world; however I have a feeling that our lovable heroes will find a way to reunite Mitchan and Gatchan later on.

End thoughts

Wow that was a crazy episode! It started out cute and fun with Leopard meeting Mitchan and being curious about the baby, but then it jumped into a lot of NOOO! Moments involving the way the Yatterman kingdom “recruits” new followers through force? I still can’t get over how dumb Gatchan  was towards that General Goroh and speaking of that General he totally fits the classic Precure-ish villain, but again I totally understand that Gatchan did what he did because he was really desperate to stay with his wife and unborn child so it pushed him to do something drastic! Also we can’t forget that the poor people are deathly afraid of the Yatterman Kingdom so selling each other out to save their own skin is bound to happen. While we had that I almost forgot to mention there was a mecha battle of the week with a giant dog versus monkey robot? I swear I love watching all the crazy inventions that Boyacky creates out of thin air! Also those poor dudes just wanted to check out the girls instead they got an eye full of monkey…

Yeah, this one was a tough one to watch. Just the grinding down of identity was harsh.

But, without that, I don’t think Leopard and crew would have realized what they needed to do. It’s gone from being a personal mission to a higher one.

Yep, this is very much a gem of the season, and I am so sorry I hesitated the second episode in….

Lol no problem ep2 was hard to get through because nothing really happened, but anyway! Yes this is a great hidden gem of the season <3

These recent serious turns sure shook up my preconceptions of this series. Now I’m not sure what think or expect of it anymore. A feeling I don’t usually get and it’s odd.

The Yatterman kingdom laws are nuts. Forcing a person into something for 35 years… Anyplace that accepts such customs as normal is no better than an iron-fisted dictatorship. Between what’s shown and what Leopard’s mother described, nothing matches up. It’s just begging for a revolution.

Sadly it seems wherever they try to help it ends up causing more harm than good because the Yatterman are ticked off, but of course we wouldn’t have much of a story if they gave up on their quest huh?

Enough is being done by teaching Leopard that in life, not everything will go the way you want. We already know a reality check like that won’t dissuade her but make her stronger.

@Fosh: I see your mecha senses are tingling again but what are you going to do with a monkey? It’s a huge responsibility taking care of animals. 😉

Like Team Rocket, who bankrolls these people?

Wow, the way this show contrasts the light moments with the very dark ones is astounding. At it’s heart, despite the facade of the normal Yatterman tone overlaying this, this is a very grim and sad story.

The Yatterman are monsters, and have enslaved and destroyed the people of this land. I mean, come on! 80% sales tax?! No business could survive that. Taking people from their homes and families to endure hard labor for decades on end? Crushing their moral and spirit to the point that they can barely function autonomously anymore?

How on Earth did these people survive and how is Leopard her team the first to rebel against them? Is this really “Yatterman” or “Robin Hood and her merry men”? And who is this “Lord Yatterman”? The Yatterman always worked as a pair, there wasn’t one person who was in charge. Something really fishy is going on here. Something happened between the time of the original Yatterman and those of today, who have pretty much made a mockery of all the originals stood for.

Honestly, I can’t even fault the husband for turning against them at the end. He thought it was the only way to help and protect his family and I can’t fault a man for putting his family first. And Leopard’s plan just to keep running and hiding was of course naive and would have never worked in the long run. And in the end, there was just nothing they could do in the face of iron grip the Yatterman have over this land.

The battle with General Goro was actually very good and pretty well choreographed. I’m actually pretty interested in seeing him again, and I’m glad that we don’t have to just see robots all the time. He was a pretty good villain.

That ending where the woman just fell apart and went crazy, was so sad and chilling (I don’t know if I can ever hear somebody saying “Banzai!” and not think of that scene), and Leopard’s fake laughs turning to tears were just as painful. She’s sworn vengeance on the Yatterman, but I’m thinking that they’re going to need more than just a “forehead flicking”.

That’s horrible. At least they’re not getting shafted by full blown opportunists like in one of the seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Fire Nation Guard: *enters Earth nation settlement home* Tax collection time.
      Woman: We just paid you.
Fire Nation Guard: *with a smirk* The tax just doubled.
