Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun 02-04

This week the boys discover ‘shipping’.

Sorry for the delay, but we’re back with more Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun! Thankfully this is one adaption that’s managed to keep me satisfied so far, even making me fall more in love with these characters and their hilarious antics.~

Four episodes in and already we’ve got several new characters from awkward baby Mikorin and the hilarious Seo in episode 2 to princely Kashima and hot-tempered Hori in episode 3. Seo is honestly one of my favorite characters in Gekkan Shoujo. I love how irritated Nozaki gets around her because it’s such a change from his usual self. Another favorite of mine is Kashima, who I’ve actually started to like more because of the anime. I expected her voice to be a little deeper to fit that princely role of hers, but I’m pleased with the somewhat girly voice she has. It makes her character just all the more…lovely. One thing I love about Gekkan Shoujo is that at first glance these characters represent some type of stereotypical shoujo manga character, like the cool, stoic love interest, the playboy type, the princely type and more, but in reality they’re totally different. Mikorin is actually awkward, gets flustered easily, and is terrible at talking to girls, while Nozaki is oblivious and pretty strange. Then there’s Seo’s rough nature contrasting her elegant singing voice, and Kashima being dorky.

I’ve said this before in the summer preview, but another great thing about this series is the large amount of characters it has, because there’s plenty of comedic opportunities that can happen when these characters are mixed and matched with each other, like what we saw with Mikoshiba, Hori, and Sakura towards the end of episode 3, as well as with Seo and Nozaki in episode 2. These past few episodes haven’t shown much of that yet, but with even more characters waiting to be introduced (in fact the episode 5 preview shows us three more), it does keep the series from getting stale or using too many repetitive jokes. Not to mention everyone is quite quirky and hilarious on their own, so there’s nothing stopping this comedy fest.

And just in case you haven’t seen the best episode yet:

What else do I say other than I love this show? It’s nice to have an adaption of a manga I love not be dissatisfying, but since Gekkan Shoujo isn’t at all serious, there isn’t a lot you could do to mess it up in the first place. The manga is gold by itself, so the anime just feels like an extra treat. However, I did feel that episode 2 and 3 were bit awkward, definitely not as solid as the first episode. It may have been this way for me because I already know all the punchlines and I’m waiting for them to get said, but it felt like they’re weren’t getting said fast enough (another disadvantage to having read the manga first). Episode 4 though was absolutely perfect. It was one of my favorite chapters in the manga and I’m glad it was just as hilarious as it was reading it. Already I’m excited for next week’s episode after that last scene with Nozaki frantically cleaning up his apartment for his editor. Until next week then~

Next week look forward to Nozaki’s editor and…tanukis…

But could Nozaki conquer reverse harem games if he knows how girls think? (°◇°)

An unexpected favorite of the season! Having not read the manga I went into Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun not knowing what to expect. I found the humor to really hit the mark and the tropes it parodies it does well.

Agreed, episode four was classic with Nozaki and Mikoshiba ‘fangirling’ during an eroge. The constant trips to the bathroom were brilliant and all throughout Sakura’s expressions just got more hilarious. She’s quickly becoming one of the most enjoyable characters of the summer season! Looking forward to next episode too!
